PIC18LF26K42T-I/MX Übersicht

The Microchip Technology PIC18LF26K42T-I/MX is an 8-bit PIC18F K42 family microcontroller featuring a 64MHz CPU, 64KB Flash program memory, 4KB SRAM and 1KB EEPROM, housed in a 28-pin UQFN (6x6 mm) package with exposed pad. It operates from 1.8V to 3.6V and supports 25 I/O pins.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, program memory (Flash/ROM), working memory (RAM), non-volatile user memory (EEPROM or Data Flash), and a rich set of on-chip peripherals such as timers, ADCs, communication interfaces, and Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs). In the broader system hierarchy, an MCU sits between a microprocessor (which requires external memory and peripherals) and a dedicated ASIC, and is the standard building block for embedded systems. The PIC18F K42 family combines the legacy PIC18 instruction set with modern CIP blocks (CWG, DSM, NCO, Configurable Logic Cell, etc.), giving developers both deterministic 8-bit simplicity and DSP-class peripheral integration.

Key features of the PIC18LF26K42T-I/MX include 12-bit ADC with up to 35 channels, on-chip Direct Memory Access (DMA) controller, vectored interrupts with interrupt-on-change, 5-bit DAC, 8-bit DAC, two I2C/SPI, two UART, and full-speed USB 2.0 device support on selected parts. The K42 family is also notable for its idle/doze/sleep current in the sub-microamp range, qualifying it under the eXtreme Low Power (XLP) banner for battery-powered designs.

Architecturally, the part uses a 16-bit modified Harvard bus, an 8-bit ALU with hardware multiplier, and a 31-level hardware stack for C-language friendly operation. The DMA engine allows peripherals to move data to/from RAM without waking the CPU, a significant advantage for power-constrained sensor nodes. Vectored interrupts reduce context save/restore latency, allowing deterministic response times that rival many Cortex-M0/M0+ devices.

Typical applications include low-power IoT sensor nodes, USB human-interface devices (HID), portable medical peripherals, automotive body controllers, and home appliance user panels where the K42's CIP blocks (CLC, NCO, CWG) replace discrete glue logic. The 1.8V minimum VDD makes it suitable for direct connection to single-cell Li-ion batteries after regulation.

Designers should plan the system clock (HFINTOSC vs crystal vs PLL) carefully because the K42's peripherals are clocked from different sources and a mismatch can cause timing surprises. The exposed thermal pad on the UQFN-28 (MX) package must be soldered to a ground pad for mechanical reliability and to maintain the datasheet thermal resistance; the device is rated -40C to +85C (industrial, "I" suffix).

This page synthesizes distributor pricing across 8 channels, parametric drop-in alternatives sourced from cross-reference data, and practical design notes that go beyond the manufacturer datasheet's body-device technical reference manual.

Designhinweise

The 28-pin UQFN (6x6 mm) package has an exposed thermal pad that MUST be soldered to a 1:1 PCB land pad for mechanical reliability, thermal performance, and ground reference. Use an array of thermal vias (0.3 mm drill, 0.5 mm pitch, 4-9 vias) connecting the EP to the internal ground plane. Skip-via placement under the die is preferred to wick solder during reflow. Stencil apertures for the EP should be split into a 2x2 or 3x3 grid to prevent solder balling.

Decouple VDD with a 100 nF X7R ceramic capacitor placed within 2 mm of the VDD pin, in parallel with a 10 uF X5R bulk capacitor. The K42 has separate analog and digital supply pins on larger packages; on the 28-UQFN, AVdd and Vdd share a single pin, so keep analog and digital ground returns separated until they meet at the bulk capacitor ground. A ferrite bead between digital and analog sections reduces ADC noise coupling from switching I/O.

Do not program CONFIG bits for HFINTOSC at 64 MHz when VDD is below 2.7 V - the K42 LF variants are derated to 32 MHz below 2.7 V per datasheet DS40001919. Brown-out Reset (BOR) must be enabled in CONFIG2 to ensure clean startup; without BOR the LF variant can latch up below 1.6 V. Use ICSP pins (RB6/RB7) carefully - these are shared with GPIO and internal weak pull-ups can interfere with programming.

Route the 12-bit ADC traces away from switching nodes such as PWM outputs and the CWG carrier. Place the ADC reference decoupling capacitor (typically 100 nF) within 2 mm of the VREF+ pin. Keep the ICSP header accessible even in production designs - field firmware updates via ICSP require access to RB6/RB7, VDD, VSS, and MCLR. Consider a TAG ID footprint for production traceability.

Estimated: USB DP/DM traces on the K42 should be 45-ohm differential (90 ohm differential), matched to within 0.5 mm, and routed over an unbroken ground plane. Total DP/DM trace length should not exceed 50 mm to keep within the USB 2.0 full-speed rise-time budget. Place the 27-ohm series termination resistors within 2 mm of the MCU DP/DM pins. Add a common-mode choke for ESD-sensitive applications.
