ADS5440IPFPRG4 Descripción general

The Texas Instruments ADS5440IPFPRG4 is a 13-bit, 210-MSPS pipeline analog-to-digital converter (ADC) that operates from a 5 V analog supply while providing LVDS-compatible digital outputs from a 3.3 V supply, housed in an 80-pin TQFP PowerPAD package (PFP). The IPFPRG4 suffix indicates a Pb-free, RoHS-compliant tape-and-reel packaging variant. Built on TI's BiCom3X complementary bipolar process, this converter delivers excellent dynamic performance for high-IF sampling applications.

A pipeline ADC (pipelined analog-to-digital converter) is a type of high-speed data converter that processes analog signals through cascaded low-resolution stages, with each stage sampling and converting a portion of the signal before passing the residue to the next stage. Pipeline ADCs sit at the top of the converter hierarchy as: pipeline ADC -> ADC -> data converter -> signal chain IC -> semiconductor. They are the workhorse architecture for communications, test and measurement, and defense applications where sample rates from 100 MSPS to 500 MSPS are required.

Key features include 210 MSPS maximum sample rate, 13-bit resolution, 0.0269% integral nonlinearity (INL) error, and LVDS digital outputs that minimize switching noise coupling into sensitive analog circuitry. The dual-suprail architecture (5 V analog, 3.3 V digital) is a hallmark of high-performance converters, isolating noisy digital transients from precision analog sampling. The TQFP PowerPAD package provides a thermal resistance suitable for continuous 210 MSPS operation.

The ADS5440 uses a switched-capacitor pipeline architecture with internal track-and-hold, supporting input bandwidths well above Nyquist. The recommended driver configuration pairs the ADC with the THS4509 fully-differential op amp set to provide 50 ohm termination and the 2.4 V common-mode input voltage required by the ADC's input network. On-chip references and an internal reference buffer simplify external BOM.

Typical applications include communications basestation receivers (multi-carrier GSM, CDMA, WCDMA, LTE), radar and electronic warfare digitizers, test and measurement instrumentation, and medical imaging front-ends. The 210 MSPS sample rate enables IF sampling of intermediate-frequency signals up to 200 MHz, eliminating downconversion stages in receiver chains.

When designing with the ADS5440, follow TI's recommended input network: a differential THS4509 driver with 50-ohm source termination, 2.4 V common-mode bias, and a 100-ohm differential load on the ADC input pins. Decouple the 5 V analog and 3.3 V digital supplies with 0.1 uF and 10 uF ceramic capacitors placed within 5 mm of each supply pin. Use controlled-impedance differential routing (100 ohm differential) for the LVDS output pairs, with 100-ohm termination at the receiver.

Notas de diseño

Use controlled-impedance 100-ohm differential routing for the LVDS output pairs from the ADS5440 to the FPGA. Match lengths within each pair to within 0.5 mm (20 mils) to avoid introducing skew. Place 100-ohm differential termination at the FPGA receiver, not at the ADC end, to maximize signal integrity at 210 MSPS data rates. Each LVDS pair should be ground-referenced and routed over a continuous ground plane.

Decouple the 5 V analog (AVDD) and 3.3 V digital (DRVDD) supplies with 10 uF tantalum or ceramic bulk capacitors plus 0.1 uF ceramic bypass capacitors placed within 5 mm of each supply pin. Use a ferrite bead or pi-filter between the 5 V analog and 3.3 V digital supplies to isolate the noisy LVDS switching transients from the precision analog sampling. Power the 5 V rail from a low-noise LDO such as the TPS7A4701 for maximum SFDR.

Per the TI ADS5440 datasheet, drive the differential analog inputs with a THS4509 fully-differential op amp providing 50-ohm source termination and 2.4 V common-mode bias. The 50-ohm source termination is critical because the ADC's input network is designed for source-matched operation; without it, frequency response peaking and ringing will appear at high IF inputs, degrading ENOB. Keep the input trace length under 25 mm and use 50-ohm controlled-impedance routing.

Solder the exposed thermal pad of the TQFP PowerPAD package to a continuous ground plane with a thermal via array (8 to 12 vias, 0.3 mm drill) to dissipate the ADC's continuous power dissipation at 210 MSPS. Without proper thermal pad soldering, junction temperature can exceed 125 C and trigger thermal shutdown or reduce ADC reliability. Avoid cutting thermal vias under the pad, which would block heat transfer to internal ground planes.

A common design mistake is using a single-ended op-amp driver instead of a fully-differential driver for the ADS5440 inputs, which causes even-order harmonic distortion (HD2) and degrades SFDR by 10-20 dB. Another pitfall is using a high-jitter clock source (e.g., FPGA-generated clock without jitter cleaning), which directly raises the ADC noise floor by SNR_dB = 20*log10(1/(2*pi*fIN*tJ)). Always use a low-jitter clock synthesizer such as the CDCE72010 with sub-ps RMS aperture jitter for IF sampling above 100 MHz.
