ATSAML11E16A-AU Descripción general

The Microchip ATSAML11E16A-AU is an ultra-low-power 32-bit ARM Cortex-M23 microcontroller with TrustZone-M security, 64KB Flash, 16KB SRAM, and integrated crypto accelerators, packaged in a 32-pin TQFP (7x7 mm) and rated for -40C to +85C operation. It runs at up to 32 MHz with 2.62 CoreMark/MHz efficiency and achieves less than 25 uA/MHz active consumption while consuming less than 100 nA in sleep mode, making it the lowest-power Cortex-M23 in the industry. The on-chip crypto block, secure key storage, and chip-level tamper resistance make this MCU the entry point for IoT endpoints that must defend firmware and identity against physical and remote attacks.

An ARM Cortex-M23 microcontroller is a 32-bit processor core built on the ARMv8-M baseline architecture, optimized for energy-efficient embedded applications. It sits below the Cortex-M3 in performance but adds optional TrustZone-M for hardware-isolated secure firmware regions. The SAM L11 family from Microchip is the first commercial Cortex-M23 implementation to integrate TrustZone-M, secure boot, and a hardware AES/SHA crypto accelerator on die. Within the broader taxonomy, the part belongs to microcontrollers -> 32-bit MCUs -> ARM Cortex-M -> Cortex-M23 -> low-power secure MCUs -> power management hierarchy.

Key differentiating specifications include the TrustZone-M isolation engine, on-die crypto accelerators (AES, SHA, TRNG), 64 KB Flash with secure storage partitioning, 16 KB SRAM, six SERCOM interfaces configurable as UART/SPI/I2C, a 12-bit ADC, 10-bit DAC, analog comparator, and PTC (Peripheral Touch Controller) for capacitive touch sensing. The part also includes a Self-Programmable Flash with read-while-write support and a 32 kHz RTC with calendar mode.

Technically, the SAM L11 uses a single-cycle hardware multiplier and hardware divider for deterministic interrupt latency. The Cortex-M23 core delivers up to 31 DMIPS at 32 MHz. Sleep current below 100 nA is achieved via three power domains (PD0/PD1/PD2) and a backup domain with RTC. The 1.62V to 3.63V operating range supports direct Li-ion and 3.3V regulated rails.

Typical applications include IoT sensor nodes, secure wearables, smart metering, medical sensor patches, building automation endpoints, and battery-powered HMI with capacitive touch. The 85C ceiling suits indoor industrial enclosures, consumer appliances, and commercial IoT gateways.

When designing with the ATSAML11E16A-AU, ensure the secure key storage region is provisioned during initial flash programming and that the NRST line has the required 10 kohm pull-up. TrustZone-M secure/non-secure partitioning must be configured before user code execution; tools like MPLAB Harmony v3 and Atmel Studio 7 simplify this.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives, and practical design notes that go beyond the manufacturer datasheet summary, including same-package pin-to-pin MCU replacements drawn from the Microchip SAM L11 family.

Guía de selección

Choose the ATSAML11E16A-AU when you need TrustZone-M hardware isolation and on-die crypto accelerators in an ultra-low-power Cortex-M23 with 64 KB Flash and 16 KB SRAM. This is the right part for secure IoT endpoints, authenticated sensor nodes, and any product requiring secure boot with hardware root-of-trust. Choose the ATSAML11E15A-AU when 32 KB Flash / 8 KB SRAM is sufficient and you want to save ~$0.50/unit in volume. Choose the ATSAML11E14A-AU for the simplest secure nodes with only 16 KB Flash / 4 KB SRAM. Choose the ATSAML10E16A-AU when TrustZone-M and crypto are not required - the L10 drops those blocks for a roughly 15-20% cost reduction. All four parts share the same 32-pin TQFP footprint, identical pinout, and same 1.62V-3.63V supply, so the choice is purely a feature/cost trade-off with no PCB rework.

Notas de diseño

The ATSAML11E16A-AU has three independently gated power domains (PD0, PD1, PD2) plus a backup domain with RTC retention. To achieve the <100 nA sleep current, switch all peripherals into PD2 and disable the Cortex-M23 core via Wait-for-Event (WFE) or Sleep-Now mode. The backup domain with RTC running draws approximately 700 nA, so even RTC-only retention should not be assumed to hit 100 nA unless the backup domain is also gated.

TrustZone-M secure/non-secure partitioning must be configured during the initial flash programming pass before user code executes. Designers using MPLAB Harmony v3 must enable the TrustZone-M linker in project properties, or the boot ROM will fail to enter secure mode. If a non-secure image is loaded without secure firmware present, the device will hard-fault on every boot. Reference the SAM L11 TrustZone-M Getting Started Guide (DS00003222A) before first programming.

Place a 1 uF X7R 0402 ceramic decoupling capacitor within 3 mm of the VDD pin, and a 100 nF X7R 0402 within 2 mm of the VDDIO pin. Add a 4.7 uF bulk capacitor near the MCU to support SERCOM TX burst currents. The 32 kHz crystal load capacitors should be sized per crystal CL specification and placed symmetrically to XIN/XOUT pins to minimize duty-cycle distortion. Keep the SWD trace length under 50 mm with 50 ohm impedance for reliable debug programming.

SERCOM lines configured for I2C require 4.7 kohm to 10 kohm pull-ups even when used as GPIO inputs, because the SAM L11 lacks internal pull-ups on every pin function. SERCOM pads configured for SPI master at >10 MHz need a 33 ohm series resistor at the driver pin to dampen reflections on long board traces. ADC inputs should be guarded with a ground ring on the PCB top layer to reduce digital switching noise pickup from adjacent SERCOM traces.
