BTS500151TADATMA2 Descripción general
High-side switches (HSS) are a category of power distribution switch that sits between the supply rail and the load. They use an N-channel MOSFET on the high side of the load so the output can be pulled all the way to the positive rail, and they are driven by an internal charge pump to overcome the VGS threshold of the N-channel device. Within the broader taxonomy, the BTS500151 belongs to: high-side switch -> power distribution switch -> smart power switch -> power management IC -> semiconductor. It is one of the canonical building blocks for ISO 26262 power distribution ECUs.
Key features include a 33 A continuous load current rating (with a peak limit near 39 A per Arrow's listing), low typical on-state resistance for low dissipation, integrated reverse-battery protection, over-current / over-temperature / over-voltage shutdown, ground-loss detection, open-load detection in OFF state, and a status diagnostic output. The 33 A continuous rating allows one switch to replace a discrete relay in many applications, simplifying harness and BOM count. Built-in AEC-Q100 qualification makes the part suitable for automotive body and powertrain ECUs operating across -40C to +150C junction temperature.
Typical applications include automotive body control modules (lighting drivers, door lock solenoids, seat heaters), industrial 24 V PLC discrete outputs, truck/construction 24 V load switching, and programmable logic controllers that need a protected, diagnosable high-current sink-source path. The diagnostic pin enables ECU-level fault handling and helps meet ISO 26262 requirements.
When designing with this device, ensure the PCB copper pour on the D2PAK tab is sized to keep junction temperature within the SOA envelope at the worst-case load current and ambient. Use a 1k pull-up on the STATUS pin and a 100 nF local bypass on Vbb; otherwise the inrush and ESD immunity of the load lines can degrade. The Infineon PROFET+ family datasheet provides a layout reference footprint and a thermal simulation model that should be followed for >20 A continuous loads.

Aplicaciones típicas
BTS500151TADATMA2 es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: Automotive Body Control Module, Industrial 24 V PLC Discrete Output, Lighting Driver (Headlamp / Worklamp), Solenoid and Valve Driver, Heater and PTC Element Driver, Motor Driver (DC Brushed).
Automotive Body Control Module
Drives 12 V resistive and inductive body loads (lamps, mirror heaters, door lock solenoids) directly from BCM outputs. The BTS500151TADATMA2's 33 A continuous rating comfortably handles multiple loads in parallel, while integrated over-current and over-temperature protection eliminate the need for a separate fuse on each channel. AEC-Q100 qualification and the STATUS-pin diagnostic output allow the BCM ECU to record ISO 14229 DTCs for open-load and short-to-ground faults, directly supporting ISO 26262 functional-safety requirements.
Recomendado
Industrial 24 V PLC Discrete Output
Replaces electromechanical relays on PLC digital output modules for switching 24 V solenoids, valve actuators, and indicator lamps. The BTS500151TADATMA2 tolerates the wider voltage and inductive-kick transients typical of factory automation, while its STATUS feedback supports per-point fault diagnostics that a relay cannot provide. Compared with a discrete N-channel MOSFET plus gate driver, this part saves 50-70% PCB area, removes the need for a separate TVS clamp, and improves MTBF by eliminating the relay contact wear.
Recomendado
Lighting Driver (Headlamp / Worklamp)
Switches LED headlamp or worklamp driver modules from a single 12 V or 24 V bus. The BTS500151TADATMA2's 33 A continuous current drives multi-100W LED loads directly, and its open-load detection in the OFF state catches burned-out LED strings without an additional sense resistor. Over-temperature shutdown prevents thermal runaway if the LED module is mis-wired or the heatsink is inadequate, while reverse-battery protection survives accidental jump-start polarity reversal.
Recomendado
Solenoid and Valve Driver
Switches hydraulic or pneumatic solenoid valves in construction, agricultural, and material-handling equipment. The 33 A peak current limit handles the inrush of large DC solenoids, and integrated over-voltage clamping absorbs the inductive kickback without external freewheel diodes. Reverse-battery protection eliminates the wiring-fault failure mode common in mobile equipment. The STATUS pin lets the ECU log intermittent solenoid faults for predictive maintenance.
Recomendado
Heater and PTC Element Driver
Controls cabin PTC heaters, seat heaters, and mirror heaters from a 12 V supply rail. The BTS500151TADATMA2's continuous current headroom handles multi-kW cabin heaters at 12 V (peak 200 A for short bursts), and its low RDS(on) reduces dissipation to keep the D2PAK within thermal limits. Integrated ground-loss detection protects against harness corrosion faults that would otherwise create a fire hazard with a discrete relay solution.
Recomendado
Motor Driver (DC Brushed)
Drives small DC brushed motors such as window lifters, seat adjusters, and trunk actuators from a 12 V bus. With the BTS500151TADATMA2 as the high-side switch and a low-side companion N-channel MOSFET, an H-bridge can be assembled in a few square centimeters of PCB. The switch's over-current protection maps naturally to motor stall detection, avoiding the need for a separate current-sense amplifier in cost-sensitive designs.

Notas de diseño
Estimated: at 33 A continuous and RDS(on) of approximately 8 milliohm typical, conduction dissipation is about 8.7 W. With a JEDEC-standard 4-layer 1-oz PCB footprint, theta_JA on the PG-TO-263-7-10 tab is approximately 35 C/W, producing a 305 C temperature rise above ambient - clearly beyond the 150C junction limit. Use a minimum 100 mm^2 copper pour on the tab, and add thermal vias to inner copper planes to reduce theta_JA to roughly 20 C/W, limiting temperature rise to ~175 C at 33 A. For >20 A continuous loads, an aluminum PCB substrate or heatsink is required. Always cross-check the SOA curve in the Infineon datasheet before locking the PCB layout.
Place a 100 nF X7R ceramic bypass capacitor directly between Vbb (pin 1) and GND (pin 2) within 5 mm of the package leads to suppress load-dump and jump-start transients. The STATUS pin (pin 4) is open-drain and requires a 10 kohm pull-up to a logic-level supply. Route the IN logic trace away from the high-current output trace to avoid capacitive coupling during switching transients. Use a star-ground topology with the IC's GND pin (pin 2) connecting to the load return at the chassis bonding point to ensure ground-loss detection works correctly.
Do not connect an inductive load (relay coil, solenoid, motor) without verifying the load's freewheel path - even though the BTS500151 has internal over-voltage clamping, sustained flyback energy above 50 mJ can exceed the internal clamp and destroy the output stage. Add an external TVS diode or schottky freewheel diode across inductive loads >0.5 mH. The STATUS pin is not a current-monitor output; do not use it for closed-loop current regulation. Finally, avoid paralleling multiple BTS500151 devices to scale current - the lack of true current sharing will result in one device carrying most of the load and triggering over-temperature shutdown.
