DSPIC33EP128MU502-I/SO Descripción general

The Microchip Technology DSPIC33EP128MU502-I/SO is a 16-bit Digital Signal Controller (DSC) with 128 KB of Flash program memory, 16 KB of RAM, an integrated 12-bit ADC, and an on-chip USB 2.0 interface, housed in a 28-pin SOIC wide-body (SO) surface-mount package.

A Digital Signal Controller combines the computational capability of a digital signal processor (DSP) with the peripheral integration and ease of use of a microcontroller (MCU). DSCs sit between general-purpose MCUs and dedicated DSPs in the embedded systems hierarchy, offering hardware multiply-accumulate (MAC), division support, and fast interrupt handling while retaining flash, ADC, communication, and timer peripherals on one chip. This makes them the standard choice for embedded control loops that also require signal processing.

Key features of the dsPIC33EP128MU502 include the dsPIC33E core running up to 70 MIPS at 3.3V, 128 KB (48 KB x 24) of self-programmable flash with ECC options, 16 KB of X/Y dual-port RAM suited to DSP addressing modes, a 10-bit/12-bit multi-channel ADC, and a full-speed USB 2.0 device interface. The device also provides multiple UART, SPI, and I2C modules, output compare and input capture channels, a 16-bit timer array, and remappable peripheral pins (PPS) for flexible board layout.

Architecturally, the dsPIC33E family uses an enhanced 16-bit pipeline core with DSP instruction extensions (MAC, MPY, ED), two address generation units, and a zero-overhead DO/REPEAT loop mechanism. The X/Y memory split enables simultaneous operand fetches for efficient FIR/IIR filtering and FFT kernels. In-circuit serial programming (ICSP) and debug access via PGD/PGC pins simplify development with MPLAB X tooling.

Typical applications include USB-connected industrial sensors and data loggers, digital power supplies, motor control front ends, and portable instruments where a single-chip USB interface plus ADC and DSP throughput replaces an MCU-plus-bridge two-chip solution.

Design consideration: the core supply is generated internally from the 3.3V rail using the VCAP/VDDCORE pin; the required low-ESR stabilization capacitor on this pin is mandatory and must not be omitted or shared.

Aplicaciones típicas

DSPIC33EP128MU502-I/SO es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: USB-Connected Industrial Data Loggers, Digital Power Supplies, Motor Control Front Ends, Portable and Handheld Instruments, Sensor Hubs and IoT Edge Nodes, Audio Signal Processing Front Ends.

🏭

USB-Connected Industrial Data Loggers

The DSPIC33EP128MU502-I/SO fits industrial data-logging nodes that must stream or configure over USB while continuously sampling analog signals. Its USB 2.0 full-speed device controller (12 Mbps) eliminates a separate USB-UART bridge chip, cutting BOM cost and board area, while the 12-bit ADC digitizes sensor channels at up to hundreds of ksps. The 70 MIPS dsPIC33E core applies scaling, filtering, or compression on the fly using DSP MAC instructions, so the host receives pre-processed frames rather than raw samples, reducing USB bandwidth needs. The industrial -40C to +85C temperature rating and 128 KB Flash provide headroom for protocol stacks (CDC/MSC/HID) plus application logic in a single chip.

⚡

Digital Power Supplies

In digitally controlled AC-DC and DC-DC converters, the dsPIC33EP128MU502 closes voltage/current loops at tens-to-hundreds of kHz using its fast 12-bit ADC and DSP core. The 70 MIPS throughput executes PI or 3p3z compensator update rates far above the switching frequency, and the output-compare/PWM modules generate edge- or center-aligned gate waveforms with hardware dead-time support. The X/Y RAM architecture enables cycle-deterministic control-loop kernels without software jitter. USB connectivity additionally provides factory calibration, firmware update, and telemetry interfaces without extra components. Designers should budget ADC sample-and-hold timing against the PWM trigger source to keep loop latency deterministic.

⚙️

Motor Control Front Ends

The DSPIC33EP128MU502-I/SO supports BLDC, PMSM, and stepper control where a USB commissioning or field-update link is required alongside the drive loop. Center-aligned PWM outputs with complementary modes drive inverter bridges, the 12-bit ADC samples phase currents synchronized to PWM triggers, and the 70 MIPS core runs field-oriented control (FOC) math using single-cycle MAC and division support. Compared with a plain MCU, the DSP instruction set shortens the current-loop execution time, allowing higher bandwidth control. For pure motor-control designs without USB, the MC-family variants reduce peripheral overhead; the MU variant wins when integrated connectivity and motor control must coexist on one chip.

🔧

Portable and Handheld Instruments

Battery-powered handheld instruments benefit from the single-chip integration of USB, 12-bit ADC, and 16-bit processing that the MU502 provides. Firmware occupies both the USB device stack and the measurement application comfortably within 128 KB Flash and 16 KB RAM, while the core's clock-switching and doze modes reduce average current between measurements. USB charging and data exchange use the same connector, simplifying the enclosure. The wide -40C to +85C operating range survives field environments that consumer MCUs cannot. Developers should verify ADC reference stability (VREF+ pin options) when absolute measurement accuracy matters, and use the internal VCAP regulation rather than an external core rail to save space.

🧩

Sensor Hubs and IoT Edge Nodes

As a sensor hub, the dsPIC33EP128MU502 aggregates multiple I2C/SPI/UART sensors through its remappable PPS pins and dual SPI/I2C modules, pre-filters the data with DSP routines, and forwards condensed results over USB or a UART link to a gateway. The 16 KB X/Y RAM sustains rolling buffers for vibration or acoustic features, and FFT computation on the 70 MIPS core enables simple on-node anomaly detection. This offloads the upstream host and reduces network traffic. The industrial temperature rating and RoHS-compliant SOIC package suit DIN-rail and panel-mounted nodes. Plan PPS pin assignments early, since remapping flexibility constrains which peripheral lands on which physical pin.

🎧

Audio Signal Processing Front Ends

The dsPIC33EP128MU502 handles moderate-rate audio tasks such as room equalization, active crossover filtering, and effects processing: the DSP MAC instruction set executes biquad IIR chains efficiently from X/Y memory, the 16 KB RAM holds multiple filter banks and delay lines, and USB audio-class firmware streams to and from a PC without external codecs for basic I/O using PWM-DAC techniques. Latency is deterministic because the core services the audio ISR at a fixed rate well below its 70 MIPS capacity. For high-fidelity paths, pair the DSC with a dedicated codec over SPI/I2C and keep the MU502 in the control and processing role. Watch ADC noise performance - external delta-sigma converters improve SNR for demanding designs.

What is the DSPIC33EP128MU502-I/SO and what are its key specifications?
The DSPIC33EP128MU502-I/SO is a 16-bit Digital Signal Controller from Microchip Technology featuring 128 KB of Flash memory, 16 KB of RAM, a 12-bit ADC, and an integrated USB 2.0 full-speed device interface. It runs its dsPIC33E core at up to 70 MIPS from a 3.0V to 3.6V supply and comes in a 28-pin SOIC wide-body package rated for -40C to +85C operation. According to the Microchip product page, it belongs to the dsPIC33EP MU (USB) family.
What package is the DSPIC33EP128MU502-I/SO available in?
The DSPIC33EP128MU502-I/SO comes in a 28-pin SOIC wide-body (suffix SO) surface-mount package. The same die is also offered in other packages within the family: the -I/MM variant in a QFN-S package and the -I/SP variant in a 28-pin SPDIP for through-hole prototyping. Package choice matters for drop-in replacement, since only other SO-packaged variants share the same PCB footprint.
Where to download the DSPIC33EP128MU502-I/SO datasheet PDF?
The datasheet PDF is available for free download from the Microchip Technology product page at microchip.com/en-us/product/dsPIC33EP128MU502, under the Documentation tab. Distributor sites such as DigiKey, Mouser, Octopart, and TrustedParts also link the official Microchip datasheet. Avoid third-party mirrors, as Microchip revises the document periodically; always verify you have the latest revision before finalizing hardware design decisions.
What is the difference between DSPIC33EP128MU502 and DSPIC33EP128GP502?
The MU variant includes an on-chip USB 2.0 full-speed device interface (D+, D-, and VUSB3V3 pins), while the GP (general purpose) variant replaces those pins with general-purpose remappable I/O. Both share the dsPIC33E 70 MIPS core, 128 KB Flash, 16 KB RAM, and 12-bit ADC, and both exist in the same SOIC-28 footprint family. Choose the MU502 when your design needs native USB connectivity; choose the GP502 when it does not and you need more general I/O.
Can DSPIC33EP256MU502 replace DSPIC33EP128MU502?
Yes. The DSPIC33EP256MU502 in the same SO package is pin-to-pin compatible with the DSPIC33EP128MU502 and doubles the program memory to 256 KB Flash. Because identical core, peripherals, and USB interface are retained, it works as a drop-in replacement whenever firmware exceeds the 128 KB limit or for risk-buffering during product ramps. Firmware may require a minor device-ID recompile, and the 256 KB part carries a price premium at distributors.
What is the best drop-in replacement for DSPIC33EP128MU502-I/SO?
The closest same-brand drop-in is the DSPIC33EP256MU502-I/SO, which is pin-to-pin compatible in the same 28-pin SOIC package with identical peripherals and USB, differing only in Flash size (256 KB vs 128 KB). For cost-optimized designs, the DSPIC33EP64MU502-I/SO halves Flash but keeps the same footprint. The extended-temperature DSPIC33EP128MU502-E/SO is a 100% match including Flash size, differing only in operating temperature range qualification.
What is the price of DSPIC33EP128MU502-I/SO?
Pricing for the DSPIC33EP128MU502-I/SO at authorized distributors such as DigiKey and Mouser typically falls in the mid single-digit USD range for single-piece quantities, with volume breaks at 10, 100, and 1000 pieces as shown in the pricing table on this page (as of 2026-09-24). Because DSC pricing fluctuates with inventory cycles, request a quote on the current stock page before committing a bill of materials, and check authorized channels for volume contracts.
Where can I buy DSPIC33EP128MU502-I/SO online?
The DSPIC33EP128MU502-I/SO can be purchased from authorized distributors including DigiKey (product 5033166), Mouser Electronics, and TrustedParts.com, which aggregates authorized inventory. Secondary sources such as Heisener and full-electronic.com list stock (for example, 2,640 to 3,669 pieces reported), but Microchip recommends authorized channels to guarantee genuine, traceable parts. XAIPART also supports quotation-based orders for this MPN.
Is DSPIC33EP128MU502-I/SO in stock?
Stock varies by channel. Web data shows DigiKey and Mouser listing the part, with secondary distributors reporting thousands of pieces in inventory (full-electronic.com reported 3,669 pieces and Heisener 2,640 pieces in recent listings). Authorized distributor stock is the safest indicator of availability. As of 2026-09-24, the part shows no end-of-life notice from Microchip, so supply is expected to remain steady through regular production.
DSPIC33EP128MU502 vs DSPIC33EP128MC502 - which is better for motor control?
For dedicated motor control, the MC variant is generally the better fit because its peripheral set emphasizes motor-control PWM and complementary outputs, whereas the MU variant prioritizes the USB interface. Both run the same 70 MIPS dsPIC33E core with 128 KB Flash and a 12-bit ADC, so if your application also requires a USB human-interface or telemetry link alongside the motor, the MU502 lets you integrate both on one chip. Note the MC502 on this page's alternatives list appears in SSOP, not SOIC, so verify package match before layout reuse.
When should I choose the DSPIC33EP128MU502 over a general-purpose PIC16 or PIC18 MCU?
Choose the dsPIC33EP128MU502 when your application needs three things simultaneously: significant digital signal processing (FIR filtering, FFT, control loops above 10 kHz), a native USB 2.0 interface, and deterministic 16-bit core performance up to 70 MIPS. A PIC16LF-class MCU is cheaper and lower power for simple logic, but it lacks DSP MAC instructions, the X/Y dual-operand memory bus, and full-speed USB. If none of these requirements exist, staying with an 8-bit part reduces cost and complexity.
Is the DSPIC33EP128MU502 the same as the DSPIC33EP128MU502-E/SO?
They are the same silicon die and pinout, but differ in temperature qualification: the -I (industrial) suffix is rated -40C to +85C, while the -E (extended) suffix is qualified for a wider extended temperature range per Microchip ordering-code conventions. Everything else - 128 KB Flash, 16 KB RAM, USB, 12-bit ADC, SOIC-28 package - is identical, so the E/SO variant is a true drop-in where harsher environments demand it, at a higher unit price.
What is the best cross-brand equivalent for the DSPIC33EP128MU502?
There is no documented cross-brand pin-to-pin equivalent for the DSPIC33EP128MU502 in published cross-reference tools (DigiKey cross-reference, Microchip cross-reference, X-refs). Functionally comparable parts include TI C2000 and Renesas RX DSC/MCU families with USB, but they use different packages and pinouts, so a cross-brand swap requires PCB redesign. For same-footprint migration, Microchip's own dsPIC33EP and dsPIC33CK families are the recommended path.
Where do I find the DSPIC33EP128MU502-I/SO pinout?
The complete 28-pin SOIC pinout is in the Microchip dsPIC33EP128MU502 family datasheet, in the pin diagrams section, and the pin diagram on this page reproduces it. Key pins: MCLR (pin 1), VDD/VSS pairs, VCAP/VDDCORE (pin 10), USB D+ and D- pins, and PGD/PGC programming pins shared with PORTB. Pin 1 is marked by the SOIC notch and dot. Always confirm remappable (PPS) pin assignments against the datasheet Peripheral Pin Select tables before routing.
What power supply design considerations apply to the DSPIC33EP128MU502?
The DSPIC33EP128MU502 operates from a single 3.0V to 3.6V supply; an internal regulator generates the core voltage, stabilized by a low-ESR capacitor on the VCAP/VDDCORE pin that is mandatory for reliable operation. The USB section additionally needs a 3.3V supply on the VUSB3V3 pin when USB is used. Decouple each VDD pin with 100 nF ceramics close to the pins. Supply current scales with core clock - budget accordingly at 70 MIPS operation.
Is the DSPIC33EP128MU502-I/SO RoHS compliant and lead-free?
Yes, the DSPIC33EP128MU502-I/SO is RoHS compliant and lead-free per Microchip's product status pages, consistent with all current production Microchip DSCs. The -I suffix device is also suitable for industrial temperature applications. For full environmental declarations, REACH statements, and material composition data, download the product environmental compliance documentation directly from microchip.com, which Microchip keeps current per regulatory changes.

Guía de selección

Choose the DSPIC33EP128MU502-I/SO when your design needs 16-bit DSP-class processing, a 12-bit ADC, and a native USB interface in one SOIC-28 chip at industrial temperature. Select the DSPIC33EP256MU502-I/SO if firmware size may approach 128 KB or you want future-proofing on the same footprint; select the DSPIC33EP64MU502-I/SO or 32 KB variant to cut cost when the application is small. Choose the DSPIC33EP128MU502-E/SO for extended-temperature environments - it is a 100% functional match. If USB is not required, the DSPIC33EP128GP502-I/SO gives the same core, memory, and ADC in the same package, freeing the USB pins as GPIO. For motor-control-centric designs, the MC family (e.g., DSPIC33EP128MC502) offers tuned peripherals, but verify package compatibility since it ships in SSOP. No cross-brand pin-compatible equivalent exists, so Microchip's own families are the safest second-source path.

Notas de diseño

The dsPIC33EP internal core regulator requires a low-ESR capacitor (per datasheet value, typically around 10 uF class ceramic) on the VCAP/VDDCORE pin (pin 10). Omitting this capacitor or using a high-ESR part causes brown-outs and erratic resets. Decouple each VDD pin (7, 21, 28) with a 100 nF ceramic placed within 2 mm of the pin, plus bulk 4.7-10 uF near the device. VUSB3V3 (pin 13) needs its own 3.3 V feed and local decoupling when the USB module is enabled.

Keep the USB D+/D- differential pair routed with 90 ohm differential impedance, matched length within 1 mm, and away from PWM and switching-node traces. Because this device uses Peripheral Pin Select (PPS), lock your PPS mapping early and document it - remapping a UART or SPI pin after routing forces firmware and layout changes together. Place the 32.768 kHz secondary oscillator (pins 22/23) away from fast digital traces if a real-time clock is used.

The most frequent bring-up failures are: (1) MCLR left floating - always fit a 10 k pull-up; (2) forgetting that PGD/PGC programming pins are shared with PORTB I/O - do not load them heavily in the final application or ICSP will fail; (3) powering VUSB3V3 from a switched rail - USB enumeration fails if the transceiver supply sags at attach. Also confirm ADC VREF+ selection in firmware, since the default supply-rail reference trades accuracy for simplicity.

Estimated: at 70 MIPS operation the device clock harmonic content extends well beyond 100 MHz; use short, direct crystal routing to OSC1/OSC2 with the datasheet load capacitors and consider a guarded ground pour around the oscillator. Configure unused PPS-capable pins as outputs driving low or as inputs with weak pull-ups in firmware to prevent floating-node EMI and increased I/O leakage.
