LTC4372IMS8#TRPBF Descripción general

The Analog Devices LTC4372IMS8#TRPBF is a positive high-voltage, low-quiescent-current ideal diode controller that drives an external N-channel MOSFET to replace a Schottky diode in 2.5V to 80V systems, packaged in an 8-lead MSOP (MS-8) with exposed pad. It regulates the MOSFET forward drop to ensure smooth current delivery or current sharing between redundant supplies, providing ORing functionality for N+1 redundant power architectures.

An ideal diode controller is a type of power-path protection IC that emulates an ideal (zero forward-voltage) rectifier by controlling an external MOSFET as the pass element. Unlike a discrete Schottky diode that loses 300-500 mV of forward drop, the MOSFET-based ideal diode drops only tens of millivolts, slashing conduction loss by 5-10x. Ideal diode controllers belong to the broader ORing controller family within power management ICs, used to combine multiple supplies, isolate failed rails, and provide hot-swap inrush control in high-availability systems.

Key features of the LTC4372 include 2.5V to 80V operating supply range, 2.5V to ground gate-drive capable of driving standard N-channel MOSFETs, 2.5V reverse-input protection, smooth switchover between supplies, and a shutdown pin for low-Iq standby. The controller monitors the MOSFET VDS and modulates gate drive to regulate forward drop at approximately 25 mV, eliminating oscillation and providing linear control across load transients. The MSOP-8 package with exposed pad delivers thermal resistance suitable for the controller's minimal power dissipation.

The architecture uses a precision current-sense amplifier and gate-charge pump that operates continuously when VIN exceeds the UVLO threshold of 2.5V. The internal charge pump is regulated to remain above the source by 8V, ensuring gate enhancement even at low VIN. Reverse-current blocking engages within 1 microsecond when VDS becomes negative, protecting upstream rails from back-feed during source-failure or hot-swap events. The SHDN pin forces the controller into a low-Iq state (<5 µA) for battery-powered or energy-conscious applications.

Typical applications include N+1 redundant telecom rectifiers (48V), industrial hold-up and ride-through circuits, automotive battery ORing with reverse-polarity protection, server and storage dual-feed power-path switches, and battery stack protection in UPS systems. In high-availability telecom (-48V) rails, two rectifiers feed a common bus through LTC4372-controlled MOSFETs for seamless failover. In 24V industrial systems, two supplies ORed through the LTC4372 support maintenance swap without downtime.

When designing with this part, select an N-channel MOSFET whose VDS(max) exceeds the worst-case input voltage and whose RDS(on) gives a regulated forward drop of about 25 mV at full load. A small RC snubber across drain-source can suppress ringing during switchover. Ensure the upstream supply ramps above the 2.5V UVLO before any downstream load activates to avoid undefined behavior.

🌐

N+1 Redundant Telecom Rectifier ORing (48 V)

The LTC4372IMS8#TRPBF is purpose-built for -48 V telecom rectifier ORing, where two or more isolated rectifiers feed a common bus and must hand off load without interruption if one fails. With a 2.5 V to 80 V operating range it covers 48 V nominal rails with full transient headroom, and the regulated ~25 mV forward drop slashes conduction loss versus a Schottky by 10-15×. Placed in series with an external 60 V or 80 V N-channel MOSFET (for example a SiR680DP or similar), it provides < 1 µs reverse-current blocking when the upstream rectifier collapses, preventing backfeed into the failed rail and isolating it from the bus. This makes the LTC4372 ideal for -48 V distributed-power systems, base-station power shelves, and central-office feeds where five-nines uptime is mandatory. Companion parts include the ADI LT4363 surge stopper and the LT8705 bidirectional controller for hold-up energy transfer.

🏭

24 V Industrial Redundant Supply ORing

Factory automation and process-control cabinets use dual 24 V rails (primary PSU plus backup) that must remain live during PSU swap. The LTC4372IMS8#TRPBF's 2.5 V to 80 V input range covers 24 V nominal with substantial margin, and the 25 mV regulated forward drop keeps dissipation manageable at 5-10 A load currents typical of PLC and motor-driver backplanes. The reverse-current blanking inside 1 µs isolates a failing PSU before downstream loads see voltage collapse. Pair the LTC4372 with two industrial-grade MOSFETs such as the BSZ0901NS or SiR680DP and you get hot-swap-capable redundant 24 V feed with sub-10 mΩ per-channel loss. This topology is favored in PLC racks, SCADA stations, and CNC machine controllers where 24 V supply interruption can halt production. Companion: ADI LT4321 ideal-diode bridge for AC-input rectification upstream.

🖥️

Server & Storage Dual-Feed 12 V Redundancy

Hyperscale and enterprise servers accept dual 12 V feeds from independent power-supply units (PSUs) and OR them into a common 12 V backplane; the LTC4372IMS8#TRPBF fits this role with its 2.5 V-80 V range and fast < 1 µs reverse-current blanking, which prevents a failed PSU from sinking current from its neighbor. The 8-MSOP footprint allows dense PCB layout in 1U/2U server backplanes. The regulated forward drop of ~25 mV means even at 30 A load, dissipation per channel is under 1 W - well within the thermal envelope of a small surface-mount MOSFET such as the BSZ0901NS or SiR680DP. Designers also use the LTC4372's SHDN pin to power down an unused ORing channel during low-load hours, saving tens of milliwatts per channel. Companion parts: ADI LTC2974 for PSU monitoring along with I2C telemetry, and ADI LTM4650 for downstream point-of-load conversion.

🚗

Automotive Battery ORing with Reverse-Polarity Protection

Automotive subsystems often OR the main 12 V battery with a backup supercapacitor or auxiliary battery to ride through cranking transients and load-dump events. The LTC4372IMS8#TRPBF handles 12 V nominal with wide transient headroom (rated 80 V), and the -2.5 V reverse-input tolerance protects the controller and downstream electronics against crossed battery cables during service. The H-grade variant LTC4372HMS8#TRPBF in the same 8-MSOP package extends the operating range to +125 °C for under-hood deployment. Reverse-current blanking inside 1 µs prevents the backup capacitor from discharging back into a shorted battery cable. Pair the LTC4372 with a 40 V N-channel MOSFET (for example a SiZ340DT or IRF7507) and you have a compact, low-loss, hot-swap-capable automotive battery ORing switch. Companion: ADI LT8672 active rectifier controller for EMI-sensitive variants.

⚡

UPS Battery-Stack Reverse-Discharge Protection

Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and energy-storage systems stack multiple battery modules in series and must prevent reverse discharge through a failed cell when the bus is being charged from the AC line. The LTC4372IMS8#TRPBF, paired with an appropriate N-channel MOSFET, blocks reverse current inside 1 µs - fast enough to protect Li-ion cells from the destructive inrush of a short-circuited neighbor. The 2.5 V UVLO release matches the minimum cell voltage at which a discharged LiFePO4 cell can safely be reconnected, and the SHDN pin lets the system controller disconnect a battery string entirely during service or fault hold-off. At cell-stack voltages of 12 V to 48 V, the LTC4372's 80 V ceiling provides margin for transient spikes. Companion parts: ADI LTC4100 smart battery charger along with the ADI LTC3300 lead-acid balancer for legacy stacks.

☀️

Solar PV Reverse-Current Blocking at Panel Level

In small-scale solar installations a shaded or failed panel can sink current from its unshaded neighbors through the parallel string; the LTC4372IMS8#TRPBF in series with each panel's positive output blocks this reverse current within 1 µs while dropping only ~25 mV at typical 5-10 A panel currents, versus the 300-500 mV of a Schottky blocking diode. The wide 80 V input range covers 24 V and 48 V PV strings with margin, and the 2.5 V UVLO release is well below the panel's maximum-power-point voltage, ensuring the controller activates as soon as the panel produces useful power. The exposed-pad 8-MSOP package handles the controller's own dissipation comfortably in outdoor junction boxes. The SHDN pin enables nighttime disconnect, eliminating the milliamp-level quiescent draw that discrete diodes cannot match. Companion: ADI LT8491 MPPT buck-boost charger for downstream battery management.

⚡

Industrial Hold-Up and Ride-Through Energy Transfer

Industrial PLCs and process controllers must ride through brief mains interruptions without resetting, and the LTC4372IMS8#TRPBF is used to switch the load between the rectified mains rail and a bank of bulk capacitors when the mains dips. The fast < 1 µs reverse-current detection ensures the bulk capacitors cannot backfeed the failed mains stage, while the 25 mV regulated drop keeps dissipation minimal even at 10 A load. The wide 2.5 V to 80 V input range covers both 24 V and 48 V industrial rails. Combined with an upstream ADI LT3790 offline controller for the bulk-cap charger, the LTC4372 forms a complete ride-through solution that survives 25-50 ms mains interruptions with no load disturbance. Companion parts: ADI LT8606 buck regulator downstream and ADI LTC2351 monitoring ADC for ride-through telemetry.

Guía de selección

Choose LTC4372IMS8#TRPBF for new 2.5 V to 80 V positive-rail ORing designs in industrial or telecom systems that benefit from the SHDN pin and ~130 µA quiescent current. Choose LTC4372HMS8#TRPBF (H-grade) for under-hood automotive or any environment above +85 °C - it is a true drop-in upgrade in the same 8-MSOP package. Choose LTC4373IMS8#TRPBF for negative-rail ORing where the supply sits below ground (for example -48 V grounded-positive telecom). Avoid the LTC4359IMS8#TRPBF for new designs unless a legacy system requires it - it lacks the SHDN pin and draws ~1 mA continuously, which is unsuitable for battery-backed ORing. The exposed pad of the 8-MSOP must be soldered to a continuous ground plane for both electrical reference and thermal dissipation.

Notas de diseño

Estimated dissipation example - select the external N-channel MOSFET so its RDS(on) yields a forward drop near 25 mV at the peak load current. For a 10 A, 48 V ORing path, a MOSFET with RDS(on) ≈ 2-3 mΩ (for example SiR680DP at VGS = 10 V) gives ~25 mV drop and dissipates ~0.25 W in the FET, well within a small surface-mount package. At 30 A (server 12 V ORing) the same approach drops about 0.9 W per channel - choose a D2PAK or similar for thermal margin. The LTC4372 itself dissipates only tens of milliwatts from its VIN pin, dominated by the gate-charge-pump current.

Estimated: Place the external MOSFET as close as possible to the LTC4372 source and drain pins to minimize parasitic inductance, which can cause ringing during reverse-current blanking. The exposed pad of the 8-MSOP package must be soldered to a continuous ground plane both for thermal dissipation of the IC's own charge-pump dissipation and for electrical reference. Keep the gate-drive trace short (< 25 mm) to limit gate-loop area. If the load can swing below ground (for example during hot-swap of capacitive loads), place a small Schottky or TVS across drain-source to clamp the inductive kick.

Estimated: Do not float the SHDN pin if unused - per the ADI datasheet, SHDN has an internal pull-up that defaults the controller to enabled, but a noisy PCB can couple into a high-impedance pin and cause erratic shutdown. Tie SHDN to IN through a 100 kΩ resistor if it will be left open, or drive it directly from a logic output. Verify that the chosen MOSFET's VGS(th) is below 4 V (logic-level) so the 8 V gate-drive from the LTC4372 can fully enhance it at low VIN. Do not exceed the 80 V absolute maximum on VIN; add a TVS such as an SMAJ78A for inductive transient protection in automotive or industrial environments.

Estimated: At VIN = 48 V the LTC4372's charge pump draws roughly 100-200 µA from VIN at 100 kHz switching, dissipating approximately 5-10 mW in the IC itself. The 8-MSOP exposed pad has θJA ≈ 40 °C/W, so even at the upper industrial limit of +85 °C ambient the controller runs at < 50 °C above ambient with no special PCB thermal treatment. The dominant thermal design effort is for the external MOSFET, not the LTC4372 - refer to the MOSFET supplier's SOA curves at the worst-case DC load current.
