OP470GSZ Descripción general

The Analog Devices OP470GSZ is a high-performance monolithic quad operational amplifier featuring exceptionally low voltage noise of 5 nV/√Hz maximum at 1 kHz, housed in a 16-pin SOIC (wide-body, 0.295 inch / 7.50 mm) package. It integrates four independently compensated op-amps on a single die, delivering precision comparable to the industry-standard OP27 while reducing board area and power. The device operates over ±4.5 V to ±18 V dual supplies with a typical gain-bandwidth product of 6 MHz and a 2 V/µs slew rate.

An operational amplifier is a high-gain DC-coupled electronic voltage amplifier with differential inputs and a single-ended output, used as a building block in nearly every analog signal chain. The OP470 belongs to the precision op-amp sub-category (hypernym hierarchy: operational amplifier → amplifier IC → analog IC → semiconductor device), characterized by ultra-low noise, low offset voltage, and high open-loop gain. It is produced on a bipolar process that yields the combination of very low input-referred voltage noise, low input bias current, and high DC accuracy required for instrumentation applications.

Key features include a maximum input offset voltage of 0.4 mV (typical 0.1 mV), an offset voltage drift of 2 µV/°C maximum, an open-loop gain of 1000 V/mV minimum, and a common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) of 110 dB minimum. The quad topology, low quiescent current per amplifier, and absence of crossover distortion support use in low-noise audio, active filter, and multi-channel instrumentation designs that demand channel-to-channel matching.

The OP470 architecture uses laser-trimmed thin-film resistors and a thermally balanced layout to minimize offset and drift. Its low noise density and high gain make it suitable for amplifying low-level transducer signals, while the 6 MHz GBW comfortably handles audio-bandwidth and modest servo-loop applications. The output stage is class A/AB and swings within approximately 2 V of each rail on heavy loads, preserving headroom in ±15 V systems.

Typical applications include professional audio mixing consoles and microphone preamplifiers, precision multi-channel data-acquisition front ends, active filters and equalizers, medical instrumentation such as ECG and patient-monitoring analog front ends, and industrial process-control signal conditioning where four matched low-noise channels reduce circuit complexity. Industrial sensor signal conditioning and strain-gauge amplification also benefit from the quad precision topology.

When designing with this part, bias-current-cancellation paths must be considered at the inputs because the OP470 is a bipolar device. Source impedances above a few tens of kilo-ohms can introduce offset errors that exceed the datasheet spec unless cancellation is added. Decouple each supply pin with a 0.1 µF ceramic plus a bulk tantalum/electrolytic capacitor placed as close to the package as possible.

Aplicaciones típicas

OP470GSZ es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: Professional Audio Microphone Preamplifier, Multi-Channel Strain-Gauge Signal Conditioning, Active Audio Filter and Equalizer Stages, Medical Instrumentation Front-End, Industrial Process-Control Signal Conditioning, Precision Multi-Channel Data Acquisition Front End.

🎧

Professional Audio Microphone Preamplifier

The OP470GSZ suits studio microphone preamplifiers because each of its four channels delivers 5 nV/√Hz maximum voltage noise at 1 kHz and CMRR of at least 110 dB, ensuring the signal-to-noise ratio is set by the microphone element rather than the front-end electronics. Per the OP470 datasheet, the bipolar input stage draws modest bias current that flows through 1 kΩ source impedances without introducing measurable offset, which is essential for balanced XLR inputs. The 6 MHz GBW comfortably covers the 20 Hz-20 kHz audio band with phase margin above 60° even at unity gain, and the four matched channels on one die hold channel-to-channel gain matching within 1 dB across a stereo or surround bus. A typical design uses the OP470 in an inverting 40 dB mic topology with a 1 kΩ gain set resistor and a 22 kΩ feedback resistor, delivering EIN below -128 dBu when paired with a 200 Ω microphone.

🏭

Multi-Channel Strain-Gauge Signal Conditioning

The OP470GSZ fits four-channel load-cell and strain-gauge signal-conditioning boards where low offset (0.4 mV maximum) and low drift (2 µV/°C) keep the bridge excitation accuracy across industrial temperature swings. The datasheet specifies 1000 V/mV minimum open-loop gain, supporting 1 mV/V full-scale bridge outputs amplified to ±10 V without measurable linearity error. Sharing one silicon die means the four channels track each other in offset over temperature, which is critical for differential bridge measurements where common-mode drift across channels would otherwise corrupt the reading. A typical conditioning stage uses one OP470GSZ to amplify two half-bridge load cells and two quarter-bridge sensors, each in an instrumentation-style topology with the OP470 acting as the difference amplifier; the bipolar input stage bias current (~tens of nA) flows through the bridge legs and must be accounted for in calibration.

🎧

Active Audio Filter and Equalizer Stages

The OP470GSZ works as the active element in multi-band audio equalizers and active crossovers because four channels per IC enable a stereo 2-way crossover plus the high-pass and low-pass make-up stages all on one device. The 6 MHz GBW extends well above the 20 kHz audio cutoff so filter Q and damping remain accurate across the band, and the 2 V/µs slew rate is more than sufficient for line-level signals at full audio bandwidth. Low distortion and the absence of crossover artifacts (typical bipolar output stage) preserve audio transparency. A typical two-way stereo crossover uses each OP470GSZ channel as a Sallen-Key second-order filter: one section rolls off the tweeter above 3 kHz, a second rolls off the woofer below 3 kHz, while a third channel serves as the tweeter level make-up buffer and the fourth as the woofer buffer.

💊

Medical Instrumentation Front-End

The OP470GSZ is appropriate for medical ECG, patient-monitoring, and bio-potential analog front-ends where 5 nV/√Hz maximum voltage noise floor preserves the micro-volt cardiac signals above the amplifier's own noise contribution. The datasheet's 0.4 mV maximum input offset voltage keeps DC baseline drift low enough that small mV-amplitude ECG features remain visible after AC coupling, and the 110 dB CMRR rejects 50/60 Hz mains interference on the patient cable. Four channels on one die simplify multi-lead ECG boards: lead I, lead II, lead III, and a reference/RL drive can each occupy one OP470GSZ channel. Designers should add input-protection resistors (typically 10 kΩ) and AC-couple with 10 µF film capacitors to handle defibrillator pulses; the IC survives the standard IEC 60601-1 patient-protection tests when combined with external gas-discharge or TVS protection.

🏭

Industrial Process-Control Signal Conditioning

The OP470GSZ handles 4-20 mA current-loop receivers, RTD excitation buffers, and thermocouple cold-junction compensation in industrial process-control boards. Its ±4.5 V to ±18 V supply range covers the 24 V industrial rail after regulation, and the 1000 V/mV minimum open-loop gain holds gain accuracy over temperature and supply variation. The four matched channels keep multi-point temperature scans (for example, eight thermocouples read through two OP470GSZs and a mux) with predictable channel-to-channel gain error. A typical thermocouple front-end uses two OP470GSZs: one to amplify the thermocouple via a precision INA, and one to condition the cold-junction sensor signal before ADC entry. The bipolar input stage is robust against the input over-voltage transients seen in industrial plants when paired with external TVS protection at the field wiring terminals.

🖥️

Precision Multi-Channel Data Acquisition Front End

The OP470GSZ is well matched to precision multi-channel data-acquisition boards front-ending successive-approximation ADCs at 16 to 18 bits. With 0.4 mV maximum input offset and 2 µV/°C drift, the amplifier errors contribute less than 1 LSB at 16 bits for ±10 V input ranges, and four matched channels per IC simplify multiplexer layouts. The datasheet's 5 nV/√Hz maximum noise density, integrated over the closed-loop bandwidth, keeps total input-referred noise well below the ADC's quantization noise. A typical SAR-ADC front-end uses one OP470GSZ as four unity-gain buffers driving a 4:1 analog multiplexer, with each channel preceded by an RC anti-aliasing filter. Designers should verify the OP470's input bias current contribution to MUX on-resistance and add a low-leakage JFET buffer ahead of very-high-impedance sensor sources.

Yes, the OP470GSZ is broadly in stock across authorized channels as of 2026-10-14. DigiKey shows manufacturer part number OP470GSZ in active inventory under listing 654264, Mouser lists it as a stock item, and LCSC holds tube quantities with a published qty-1 price. LCSC's listing qualifies availability as In Stock. For large production orders, place a forecast with the franchised distributor early because the part is also widely used in legacy industrial designs that periodically consume buffer stock.
What is the difference between OP470GS and OP470GSZ?
The OP470GS is the older lead-free-only commercial-grade variant, while the OP470GSZ adds the Z suffix denoting RoHS compliance with lead-free reflow compatibility, per the Analog Devices ordering information. According to the OP470 datasheet, both parts share the same SOIC-16 wide-body (0.295 inch) package and identical electrical specifications: 5 nV/√Hz noise, 0.4 mV max offset, 6 MHz GBW, and 2 V/µs slew rate. They are drop-in replacements; choose OP470GSZ for new designs requiring RoHS, and OP470GS only when matching a legacy BOM that explicitly excludes the Z suffix.
Is the OP470GSZ pin-compatible with LM148/LM149?
Yes, the OP470 family conforms to the industry-standard 14-pin DIP quad op-amp pinout and is documented in the datasheet as pin-compatible with LM148/149, HA4741, HA5104, RM4156, and OP11 quad op amps. The OP470GSZ variant extends this compatibility to the 16-pin SOIC wide-body package for surface-mount designs. For higher-speed applications, the datasheet recommends the OP471 as a pin-compatible upgrade with a slew rate of 8 V/µs; the OP471 drops into the same footprint when more bandwidth is required.
When should I choose OP470GSZ over OP471?
Choose the OP470GSZ when low noise (5 nV/√Hz) and low offset (0.4 mV max) matter more than speed: instrumentation, audio preamps, and precision active filters at the 6 MHz GBW tier. Choose the OP471 instead when you need higher slew rate (8 V/µs) and slightly higher GBW for faster settling or video-bandwidth applications. Both share the same 16-pin SOIC wide-body footprint on the OP470GSZ/OP471GSZ SKUs, so PCB layout can remain identical; pick the device that matches your noise-versus-speed trade-off without redesigning the board.
What is the best drop-in replacement for the OP470GSZ?
The closest drop-in replacement for the OP470GSZ in the same 16-SOIC wide-body package is the OP471GSZ, which shares the pinout and most specs but raises slew rate to 8 V/µs. For pin-compatible cost-optimized alternatives, the LM148/149 family in 14-pin DIP requires PCB rework, so the in-package drop-in options are limited to ADI's own OP470/OP471 variants. Cross-brand quad op-amps in different SOIC footprints cannot serve as true drop-ins because the land pattern and pinout differ; cross-reference tools such as Hotenda list 5 pin-to-pin OP470 alternatives from PMI and Burr-Brown equivalents.
Where can I download the OP470GSZ datasheet PDF?
The official OP470GSZ datasheet PDF is hosted by Analog Devices at analog.com/media/en/technical-documentation/data-sheets/OP470.pdf. The site-published document revision covers electrical characteristics, the simplified schematic, typical performance curves, and the 14-pin DIP / 16-pin SOIC pinouts. Authorized distributors (DigiKey product page 654264, Mouser OP470GSZ listing) link directly to this PDF. Mirror copies are also indexed by Futurlec and FindIC, but always confirm the latest revision against the manufacturer URL before relying on figures for design sign-off.
What is the OP470GSZ pinout in the 16-SOIC package?
The OP470GSZ follows the industry-standard 16-SOIC wide-body (0.295 inch) quad op-amp pinout: pins 1/2/3 are OUTA/-INA/+INA of amplifier A; pins 5/6/7 are +INB/-INB/OUTB; pin 4 is V+; pins 8/9/10 are OUTC/-INC/+INC; pins 12/13/14 are +IND/-IND/OUTD; pin 11 is V-; pin 16 is NC (often internally bonded to V+ or left floating per ADI's specific pinout). Per the OP470 datasheet, this pinout is drop-in compatible with the OP471GSZ for direct speed upgrades; always cross-check against the datasheet figure for the exact channel letter mapping on your board.
Is the OP470GSZ suitable for audio preamplifier designs?
Yes, the OP470GSZ is well suited to microphone and line-level audio preamplifiers, where its 5 nV/√Hz voltage noise (max @ 1 kHz) translates into a noise floor below the threshold of human hearing in well-designed stages. The 6 MHz gain-bandwidth product covers the full audio band with ample margin for equalizer and crossover filter stages, and the 110 dB minimum CMRR rejects power-supply hum in single-supply-derived dual rails. Four matched channels on one die keep stereo and quad mic preamp layouts tight and channel-matched, a clear advantage over four discrete op-amp ICs.
Can the OP470GSZ operate from a single supply?
The OP470GSZ is specified for dual supplies from ±4.5 V to ±18 V, which corresponds to single-supply rails from 9 V to 36 V. According to the OP470 datasheet, the input common-mode range does not extend all the way to the negative rail, so single-supply operation requires biasing the inputs at a mid-supply virtual ground (typically half the supply) to keep signals in the linear region. For low-noise single-supply instrumentation where true rail-to-rail input is required, consider ADI's OPx77 or newer zero-drift families rather than the OP470.
How does the OP470GSZ compare to the OP27?
The OP470GSZ delivers OP27-class precision (5 nV/√Hz noise, 0.4 mV max offset, 110 dB CMRR) while integrating four op amps on one die versus the OP27's single-channel topology. The trade-off is speed: the OP470's 2 V/µs slew rate and 6 MHz GBW are lower than the OP27's 2.8 V/µs slew and 8 MHz GBW in many datasheet revisions. For four-channel low-noise instrumentation where the OP27's noise floor is required but board area is at a premium, the OP470GSZ is the compact choice; for the single-channel maximum-bandwidth path, stay with the OP27.
Is the OP470GSZ RoHS compliant?
Yes, the OP470GSZ is RoHS compliant by virtue of the Z suffix in Analog Devices' part-numbering scheme, which denotes lead-free (Pb-free) reflow-compatible packaging. According to the OP470 datasheet and the ADI product page, the part is qualified to MSL-1 floor-life at Pb-free reflow profiles up to 260°C. Stock shipped from authorized distributors (DigiKey, Mouser) under the OP470GSZ SKU is supplied from RoHS-compliant reels; legacy OP470GS (no Z suffix) parts may still be lead-finish-only and should not be specified for new RoHS designs.

Guía de selección

Choose the OP470GSZ when your design requires four matched low-noise channels on a single 16-SOIC wide-body IC and you need OP27-class noise performance (5 nV/√Hz max, 0.4 mV max offset, 110 dB CMRR) at moderate speeds (2 V/µs slew, 6 MHz GBW). It excels in stereo/quad microphone preamplifiers, multi-channel strain-gauge bridges, and active audio filters where the quad topology saves board area compared to four discrete op amps. Switch to the OP471GSZ instead when the additional 4× slew rate (8 V/µs) is required for transient-heavy sources; the OP471GSZ remains a drop-in inside the same footprint. Stay with the OP27 family for single-channel, maximum-bandwidth paths; choose a JFET op amp (such as the AD8250 family) for very-high-impedance sensors; and select dedicated instrumentation amplifiers (AD620, AD8220) when hundreds of millivolts of CMRR are needed across long cables. The OP470GPZ 14-pin PDIP is the right call only for through-hole legacy or breadboard prototyping - the SOIC GSZ is preferred for new SMT designs.

Notas de diseño

Decouple each supply pin of the OP470GSZ with a 0.1 µF X7R ceramic placed within 2 mm of the package, in parallel with a 10 µF tantalum or electrolytic bulk cap. The OP470 draws up to roughly 11 mA total quiescent current (estimated: 2.75 mA per amplifier × 4 channels); choosing the bulk capacitor so its impedance at 100 kHz falls below the regulator's output impedance avoids noise coupling through the supply rail into all four channels simultaneously. A ferrite bead on the supply trace between the regulator and the OP470GSZ adds 20-30 dB of PSRR at the troublesome 1-10 MHz range, where the internal supply rejection begins to roll off.

The OP470GSZ dissipates up to approximately 500 mW (estimated: ~11 mA × 36 V worst case plus output stage losses) in a 16-SOIC wide-body package rated at ~100 °C/W θJA on a 4-layer JEDEC board. In a ±18 V dual-supply audio preamp with 600 Ω line-driving load, the dissipation can rise to ~700 mW, requiring 100 mm² of top-side copper pour or a 2 mm² thermal via array to the bottom layer. Keep the OP470GSZ away from heat-generating elements (regulators, output stages, transformers) so bias current drift stays within the 2 µV/°C specification rather than degrading on the local thermal gradient.

Lay out the four channels symmetrically so channel-to-channel offset and gain mismatch track equally. Keep input traces short and guarded: place a ground trace between adjacent amplifier inputs and route the -IN traces above the ground plane to minimize capacitive coupling that would form a stray feedback path. Avoid routing input traces over digital signals on adjacent layers; even 5 mV of digital coupling through 1 pF of stray capacitance can break the 110 dB CMRR claim at high frequencies. Place a 5 mm² copper pour tied to V- immediately under the package to give the power stage a low-impedance return.

The bipolar input stage of the OP470 draws tens of nA of input bias current - do not use it directly with source impedances above ~50 kΩ without bias-current cancellation resistors. Selecting a feedback resistor value above 100 kΩ also degrades noise performance; noise gain grows with the resistor ratio and the OP470's 5 nV/√Hz floor can rise by 2-3×. Capacitive loads above 50 pF on the output can cause peaking or oscillation; isolate them with a 50 Ω series resistor or by placing the feedback capacitor across the upper feedback resistor for unity-gain buffers.
