OPA4209AIPWR Descripción general
An operational amplifier is a high-gain DC-coupled electronic voltage amplifier with differential inputs and a single-ended output, forming the fundamental building block of analog signal chains. Precision op amps in particular target low offset voltage, low input bias current, low noise, and high open-loop gain so they can amplify millivolt-level signals without adding meaningful error. The OPA4209 belongs to the precision low-noise op-amp family (precision op amp -> low-noise amplifier -> operational amplifier -> analog IC -> semiconductor), bridging sensor/transducer signal conditioning and downstream ADC drivers.
Key features include 2.2 nV/√Hz input voltage noise density at 1 kHz, 18 MHz unity-gain bandwidth, 6.5 V/µs slew rate, 130 dB open-loop gain (AOL), 150 µV typical input offset voltage, and rail-to-rail output swing. The device is unity-gain stable and accepts capacitive loads up to 1 nF, simplifying its use as a buffer or transducer interface without external compensation. The TSSOP-14 surface-mount package has a thermal resistance (θJA) of approximately 130 °C/W, requiring attention to total dissipation in multi-channel operation at high ambient temperature.
The OPA4209AIPWR uses TI's proprietary precision bipolar process with a trimmed input stage to deliver 130 dB AOL and low offset drift across the full -40 °C to +125 °C range. Its CMOS-compatible input bias current (~ 1 nA typical) simplifies interface to high-impedance sensors and photodiode front ends. The RRO architecture eliminates the need for negative rails in single-supply systems, maximizing dynamic range in low-voltage 5 V or 12 V designs.
Typical applications include precision data acquisition front ends, 16-bit and 18-bit SAR ADC drivers, industrial process-control analog I/O, multi-channel sensor signal conditioning (strain gauge, RTD, thermocouple), medical instrumentation, test-and-measurement equipment, and active filters. The wide 36 V supply range also makes it suitable for ±15 V pro-audio and industrial automation boards.
When designing with this amplifier, observe the input common-mode range which extends to the negative rail but stays approximately 1.5 V below the positive rail (it is not a true RRIO). For 5 V single-supply designs, this is usually not a problem; for 36 V designs, ensure VCM stays within the linear input range to avoid distortion.

Aplicaciones típicas
OPA4209AIPWR es adecuado para 7 aplicacións: 16-bit / 18-bit SAR ADC Driver, Industrial Process-Control Analog I/O, Multi-Channel Sensor Signal Conditioning, Medical Instrumentation Front End, Test-and-Measurement Active Filters, Pro-Audio Line Drivers and Headphone Buffers, Precision Photodiode / Transimpedance Front End.
16-bit / 18-bit SAR ADC Driver
The OPA4209AIPWR is well matched as a precision buffer/driver for high-resolution successive-approximation ADCs because its 2.2 nV/√Hz voltage noise floor is below the 16-/18-bit LSB step at any practical full-scale range, and its 18 MHz GBW / 6.5 V/µs slew rate settle to one LSB within typical ADC acquisition windows. Its rail-to-rail output maximises dynamic range on 5 V or 12 V analog rails. Place the op-amp within 5 mm of the ADC input pins and use a ground-referenced Kelvin connection to the ADC reference decoupling capacitor. Unlike the lower-bandwidth OPA2277, the OPA4209 will not limit throughput on AD7768 or ADS131M0x-class converters.

Industrial Process-Control Analog I/O
The OPA4209AIPWR's 36 V supply tolerance makes it directly usable on ±15 V industrial analog I/O cards and 24 V transducer rails without level shifting, while its 4-channel TSSOP-14 footprint saves board area versus four discrete dual op amps. Typical signal chain: ±10 V sensor input -> OPA4209 instrumentation stage -> PGA -> ADC. Its 130 dB open-loop gain and 150 µV offset voltage keep total unadjusted error below 0.005 % over the -40 °C to +125 °C range. Add TVS protection on the inputs because the OPA4209 input stage is not designed to survive >36 V differential or common-mode transients; check the absolute-maximum table in the datasheet.

Multi-Channel Sensor Signal Conditioning
Strain-gauge bridges, RTDs, thermocouples, and photodiode front ends all require low-noise, high-gain amplification that does not swamp the sensor signal with op-amp noise. The OPA4209AIPWR's 2.2 nV/√Hz floor at 1 kHz gives an ENR advantage of ~5 dB over 5 nV/√Hz alternatives at typical sensor bandwidth, while its quad-channel density enables four bridges to be conditioned on one TSSOP-14 footprint. Use chopper-stabilised op amps (e.g. AD8628) only when sensor source impedance is very high; for strain-gauge applications the OPA4209's drift and noise balance is a better practical choice.

Medical Instrumentation Front End
ECG, EEG, EMG, and pulse-oximeter front ends require extremely low noise to detect sub-millivolt bioelectric signals. The OPA4209AIPWR's 2.2 nV/√Hz and 130 dB open-loop gain keep input-referred noise well below bioelectric signal amplitudes, and the 18 MHz GBW preserves signal fidelity for diagnostic bandwidths up to several kHz. Quad density allows 4-lead ECG conditioning in one IC. Per IEC 60601-1 isolation requirements, follow the OPA4209 with an isolation amplifier (e.g. ISO124); the OPA4209 itself is not an isolated device. Note: medical safety certification belongs to the system integrator, not the op-amp supplier.

Test-and-Measurement Active Filters
Active low-pass, high-pass, and band-pass filters in T&M equipment demand low-noise, high-bandwidth op amps to preserve filter Q and minimise in-band noise. The OPA4209AIPWR's 18 MHz GBW supports Sallen-Key or multiple-feedback filter designs with cutoff frequencies up to several hundred kHz, and its 2.2 nV/√Hz floor keeps filter in-band noise floor below typical DMM or scope measurement resolution. Unity-gain stable with up to 1 nF capacitive load simplifies direct drive of long PCB traces without oscillation. Quiescent current of 2.5 mA per channel is acceptable for bench equipment but watch total dissipation in a sealed enclosure.

Pro-Audio Line Drivers and Headphone Buffers
Pro-audio line drivers need >110 dB dynamic range, low THD, and the ability to swing close to the rails to maximise headroom on ±15 V supplies. The OPA4209AIPWR's 130 dB AOL and 2.2 nV/√Hz noise deliver THD+N below 0.0008 % in audio-bandwidth line-stage circuits, while its 36 V supply tolerance supports ±18 V pro-audio rails. Rail-to-rail output maximises headphone-amp output swing on single 12 V or 5 V supplies. For multi-driver headphone amplifiers, place 10 Ω-100 Ω output resistors in series to isolate capacitive headphone loads from the op-amp output stage.

Precision Photodiode / Transimpedance Front End
Photodiode transimpedance amplifiers need very low current noise, low voltage noise, and sufficient GBW to handle the photodiode's capacitance-compensated bandwidth. The OPA4209AIPWR's 2.2 nV/√Hz input noise and 18 MHz GBW support TIAs up to several MHz of closed-loop bandwidth for medium-capacitance PIN photodiodes. Use the JFET-input dual OPA2209 instead when input bias current must be sub-nA. Place a feedback capacitor (C_F) chosen for Q ≈ 1/√(GBW/(4π R_F C_IN))) to flatten the frequency response and avoid peaking.

Notas de diseño
Place 0.1 µF ceramic bypass capacitors within 2-3 mm of each supply pin (V+ pin 11 and V- pin 4) to the nearest ground plane, plus a single 10 µF bulk tantalum or ceramic capacitor on the supply rail. The TSSOP-14 thermal pad (exposed pad, if present in your board revision) MUST be soldered to a copper pour of at least 100 mm² to keep θJA below 130 °C/W - otherwise junction temperature can exceed 150 °C at full four-channel load in still air.
The OPA4209 is unity-gain stable up to 1 nF of capacitive load, but for driving long PCB traces (>50 mm) or unbuffered ADCs, add a 10 Ω-50 Ω isolation resistor between the op-amp output and the load. This isolates the load capacitance from the op-amp's output stage and prevents phase-margin loss that manifests as ringing or oscillation. Without the resistor, capacitive loads in the 200 pF-1 nF range can cause 20-30 % peaking at the unity-gain crossover frequency.
The OPA4209 is RRO (rail-to-rail output) but NOT RRIO - the input common-mode range extends to the negative rail but stops ~1.5 V below the positive rail. In a 36 V single-supply design this means the input must stay below ~34.5 V common-mode, which is rarely a problem. In a 5 V single-supply design with rail-to-rail input requirement, choose OPA2192 or OPA2333 instead. Estimated: assuming the typical input bias current of ~1 nA flowing through a 10 kΩ source resistance, the resulting offset error is ~10 µV - generally negligible vs the 150 µV Vos spec.
With all four channels driving 5 V into 1 kΩ loads from a 36 V supply, the OPA4209AIPWR dissipates roughly 4 × (36-5)² / 1 kΩ = 3.8 W - well above the ~0.6 W rating of the TSSOP-14 without thermal vias. The exposed thermal pad MUST be soldered to a 4-layer board copper pour of at least 200 mm² with thermal vias (9×0.3 mm) to a flooded inner plane. Without this, junction temperature can exceed 150 °C under full load, triggering thermal shutdown. Per-channel power = (V+ - V-) × I_OUT + V+ × I_Q.
