OPA637SM - Precision High-Speed DiFET Op Amp, TO-99 | Texas Instruments
N.º de pieza: OPA637SM ✓ ActivoOPA637SM Descripción general
An operational amplifier (op amp) is the core active building block of analog signal conditioning: it amplifies the difference between two inputs while presenting very high input impedance and very low output impedance. A precision high-speed FET-input op amp such as the OPA637 sits at the top of that hierarchy, combining the low offset and drift of instrumentation-grade parts with the bandwidth and slew rate needed to process signals above the audio band. In the taxonomy, it is a precision operational amplifier -> voltage amplifier -> amplifier IC -> integrated circuit -> semiconductor.
Differentiating features include a very low noise voltage density at 10 kHz, fast settling time to 0.01%, low offset voltage (100 uV max), low temperature drift (0.8 uV/C max), and very low input bias current (5 pA max). The TO-99-8 hermetic-style metal can package supports through-hole mounting and keeps lead inductance low for high-speed feedback layouts, while the exposed metal shell provides an effective thermal path.
Architecturally, the OPA637 uses a DiFET (dioded field-effect transistor) input stage rather than bipolar inputs. That input topology is what produces the 5 pA maximum bias current and the low voltage noise floor, at the cost of higher input bias voltage sensitivity than bipolar inputs. Because it is decompensated for a minimum gain of 5, closed-loop feedback resistors must be sized so that noise gain never falls below 5, or the amplifier will oscillate.
Typical applications include photodiode and other high-impedance sensor front ends, precision ADC drivers, low-noise audio signal chains, active filter and Sallen-Key sections, and buffered references for instrumentation systems. Gain-of-5 minimum stability suits gain stages of 5, 10, and 20, which are common in multi-stage analog chains.
The key design caution is noise gain: verify that the total noise gain at every frequency stays at or above 5, keep feedback loops short, and bypass the supply pins close to the can leads. Decoupling capacitors should be placed at the supply pins rather than at a distant bulk capacitor to avoid inductive feedback.
This page organizes manufacturer documentation, package and pin information, drop-in alternatives, comparison parameters, and practical layout and stability guidance for engineers evaluating the OPA637SM in precision analog designs.

Aplicaciones típicas
OPA637SM es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: Photodiode and High-Impedance Sensor Front Ends, High-Speed Precision ADC Drivers, Low-Noise Audio and Measurement Signal Chains, Active Filters and Sallen-Key Equalizer Stages, Buffered Precision References and Instrumentation, Industrial Sensor and Control Signal Conditioning.
Photodiode and High-Impedance Sensor Front Ends
The OPA637SM suits photodiode and other high-impedance transducers because its 5 pA maximum input bias current produces only about 5 mV of offset across a 1 Gohm source, while the 100 uV maximum input offset voltage and 0.8 uV/C maximum drift keep the transimpedance stage stable over temperature. The part is used in a non-inverting or inverting transimpedance configuration with a feedback resistor and compensation capacitor, where the minimum noise gain of 5 is met by the feedback network. Compared with a CMOS-input amplifier, the DiFET stage gives lower voltage noise at 10 kHz, which directly sets the shot-noise-limited detectivity of the receiver. Watch the gain requirement: the loop must present a noise gain of 5 or more at all frequencies or the amplifier will ring.

High-Speed Precision ADC Drivers
Driving a high-resolution successive-approximation ADC from a low-impedance source is where the OPA637SM earns its keep: its precision offset of 100 uV max, drift of 0.8 uV/C max and very low noise at 10 kHz add very little error to the acquisition chain, while the decompensated architecture delivers fast settling to 0.01% accuracy. It is typically used as a gain stage ahead of a multiplexed converter front end or as the buffer on a resistive divider network. The 5 pA maximum input bias current matters when the source impedance is high, because bias current flowing through a large source resistance creates an uncorrectable offset. Because the amplifier is only stable at a gain of 5 or more, place a fixed attenuator in the feedback path so the noise gain never drops below that value.

Low-Noise Audio and Measurement Signal Chains
In audio and measurement chains the OPA637SM is chosen for the combination of very low noise voltage at 10 kHz and low distortion from the fast settling behavior of the DiFET stage. It works well in microphone preamp gain stages, RIAA and line-level gain blocks, and in buffered outputs for studio monitors where the signal path must stay quiet. The 100 uV maximum offset and 0.8 uV/C maximum drift are negligible next to typical audio signal levels, so the amplifier adds no audible coloration. The tradeoff is the minimum gain of 5: microphone and instrument preamps are usually designed at gain 5 to 20, so the topology fits naturally, but any headphone-style voltage follower should use the unity-gain-stable OPA627SM instead. Keep the feedback loop tight and the layout symmetrical to preserve even harmonic performance.

Active Filters and Sallen-Key Equalizer Stages
The OPA637SM is a natural choice for the gain-and-filter stages of active equalizers and anti-alias filters, where both high bandwidth and stable settling are required to keep the response predictable. Each stage can be set to a closed-loop gain of 5, 10 or 20, which fits a Sallen-Key topology with equal or slightly unequal resistors, and the very low noise at 10 kHz keeps the filter from degrading the signal-to-noise ratio of the source. Because the amplifier is decompensated, the noise gain of the filter must stay above 5 across the passband and stopband, so capacitor and resistor tolerances that raise the noise gain are the ones to watch. For a band where the Q factor is high, the fast settling of the device keeps the transient response well behaved and reduces time-domain ringing compared with slower precision amplifiers.

Buffered Precision References and Instrumentation
Precision voltage references and instrumentation buffers are usually DC-accurate rather than bandwidth-critical, and that is exactly where the OPA637SM adds value: 100 uV maximum input offset voltage and 0.8 uV/C maximum drift keep the buffered reference stable, and the 5 pA maximum input bias current barely loads a high-impedance reference node. The device is used to buffer a low-noise reference into a higher current output, or as the gain stage in a transducer conditioner feeding a slow but accurate converter. Compared with a CMOS-input rail-to-rail amplifier, the DiFET input stage avoids the higher input bias current that would load the reference. The trade-off is the fixed minimum gain of 5, so a plain unity-gain reference buffer should be built with the unity-gain-stable OPA627SM instead.

Industrial Sensor and Control Signal Conditioning
Industrial sensor interfaces often combine a resistive bridge or potentiometer with an analog-to-digital converter, and the OPA637SM provides the gain stage between them. Its low offset and drift specification (100 uV max and 0.8 uV/C max) keeps the calibration error from dominating the measurement, while the very low noise at 10 kHz raises the usable resolution of the downstream converter. A gain-of-10 stage ahead of a 16-bit converter is a typical arrangement, well within the minimum gain of 5 that the device requires. Because industrial environments bring long cables and ground offsets, keep the input bias current requirement in mind, since 5 pA max across a 100 Mohm source still creates roughly 0.5 mV of error, and provide filtering close to the amplifier rather than at the connector.

Notas de diseño
The OPA637 is stable in a minimum closed-loop gain of 5, so every stage that feeds back with a noise gain below 5 will oscillate. Design the feedback network so that the noise gain stays at or above 5 across the entire frequency range, including the frequency-dependent rise caused by parasitic capacitance on the inverting input. If a follower or unity-gain stage is required, use the unity-gain-stable OPA627SM instead of re-deriving the network. Check the gain at DC and at the highest frequency of interest, because the noise gain usually peaks between the two.
Place the supply bypass capacitors directly at the TO-99-8 leads, not at a remote bulk capacitor position. At high speed the inductance of the can leads and PCB traces between the amplifier pins and the decoupling network forms a resonant LC loop that can destabilise the amplifier or inject noise into the output. Use a short, wide supply path and a solid ground plane under the device, and keep the bypass return currents on the same layer as the capacitor ground terminals so that loop area stays small.
Keep the feedback loop physically small and place the feedback resistors close to the inverting input pin rather than routing the feedback trace across the board. Because the DiFET input stage presents very high impedance, even moderate leakage on a long input trace can degrade the 100 uV maximum offset specification and the 5 pA maximum bias current target. Route input and output traces away from the supply and clock lines, and match the layout of a differential stage to reject common-mode noise and reduce offset drift caused by thermal gradients across the die.
Estimated: with a dual supply of plus or minus 15 V and a gain of 5 into a 10 kohm load, the output swing is roughly 15 V peak, giving about 1.5 mA of load current and an output dissipation of roughly 22 mW in the output stage, while the quiescent dissipation is dominated by the supply current across the full rail-to-rail span. Because the metal can shell is the main thermal path, solder the shell to a copper pad that connects to a plane rather than relying on the thin leads, and keep the thermal path short if the amplifier is expected to sit at the edge of a temperature-controlled enclosure.
