P5021NSE72QC Descripción general

The NXP P5021NSE72QC is a 64-bit dual-core PowerPC e5500 microprocessor from the QorIQ P5 family, integrating two cores running at up to 2.2 GHz in a 1295-ball FCBGA (37.5x37.5 mm) package. It supports DDR3/DDR3L with ECC memory, PCIe Gen2/Gen3 lanes, dual 10 Gigabit Ethernet MACs plus multiple 1 GbE ports, SATA 2.0, USB 2.0, and on-chip security (SEC) acceleration. The device is specified for the commercial 0°C to 90°C operating range and is rated at Silicon Rev 2.1.

Background: A SoC (System-on-Chip) microprocessor integrates CPU cores, memory controllers, I/O peripherals, and security engines into a single silicon device, reducing board area and BOM versus a chipset approach. QorIQ P5 sits within NXP's broader Power Architecture communications processor hierarchy: SoC -> MPU (microprocessor) -> communications processor -> embedded processor -> semiconductor. It targets control-plane and compute-intensive networking workloads where deterministic performance, hardware offload, and long-term reliability matter more than raw peak FLOPS.

Key features include: two 64-bit e5500 cores at up to 2.2 GHz with a tightly-coupled cache hierarchy; a high-throughput 64-bit DDR3/DDR3L controller with ECC for reliable data-path memory; multiple SerDes lanes configurable as PCIe (Gen2/Gen3), 10 Gigabit Ethernet (XAUI/KR), and SATA Gen2; integrated SEC 4.0 security engine for IPsec, SSL/TLS, Kasumi, and SNOW 3G; and enhanced local bus, I2C, SPI, UART, GPIO, dual USB 2.0, and SD/MMC interfaces.

The P5021 silicon (Rev 2.1) is built on a 45 nm SOI process and uses a coherent CoreNet fabric to interconnect the cores, L2/L3 caches, and I/O controllers. Each e5500 core has 32 KB I-cache + 32 KB D-cache (L1), backed by a shared 512 KB L2 per core, with a platform-level L3 cache option. This cache hierarchy, combined with hardware-accelerated cryptography, allows the P5021 to sustain line-rate packet processing on encrypted traffic at multi-Gbps speeds.

Typical applications include enterprise routers, switches, unified threat management (UTM) appliances, network attached storage (NAS), industrial control-plane modules, long-life telecom line cards, and aerospace/Defense secure compute platforms. The integrated 10GbE MAC plus PCIe and SEC make it well suited as a control-plane companion to NPU/ASIC data planes or as a standalone secure gateway SoC.

When designing with the P5021NSE72QC, follow NXP's reference board layout for FCBGA power delivery: use a minimum 6-layer PCB with a dedicated solid ground plane beneath the BGA breakout, and place all 0.1 µF + bulk decoupling within 5 mm of the respective supply pins. The boot configuration, SerDes lane mapping, and core voltage rails (typically 1.0 V VDD, 1.5 V/1.35 V for DDR3/DDR3L) must be set via RCW (Reset Configuration Word) sourced from the on-chip ROM or external I2C EEPROM.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives (focused on the same QorIQ P5 FCBGA family), and practical thermal/decoupling guidance beyond the manufacturer datasheet excerpt, with every parameter aligned to the data retrieved as of 2026-10-17.

🌐

Enterprise Router and Switch Control Plane

The P5021NSE72QC's dual 64-bit e5500 cores at 2.2 GHz, integrated SEC 4.0 engine, and 10 GbE + PCIe Gen2/Gen3 ports make it a strong control-plane companion for enterprise routers and L2/L3 switches. In the control plane, it runs routing daemons (RIP/OSPF/BGP), path computations, and exception-path forwarding at rates well above 10 Gbps aggregated, while leaving the data-plane NPU/ASIC to perform wire-speed line cards. The hardware-accelerated IPsec/SSL/TLS offload (Kasumi, SNOW 3G, AES, 3DES) frees the cores for management and policy-plane work, keeping CPU headroom even during heavy VPN churn. The combination of a tightly coupled cache hierarchy and a 64-bit DDR3/DDR3L with ECC controller also handles the control plane's bursty memory traffic (BGP table dumps, large ACL tables) without stalling the OS scheduler.

🛡️

Unified Threat Management (UTM) and Next-Generation Firewall

For UTM appliances, the P5021NSE72QC's hardware SEC 4.0 engine performs IPsec/SSL inspection at line rate, offloading Kasumi, SNOW 3G, AES, DES, MD5, SHA, and RSA primitives from the cores so they can run DPI engines, antivirus scanning, and IPS pattern matching. The PCIe Gen2/Gen3 lanes support a multi-port crypto accelerator, an SSD RAID controller for log/event storage, or a 10 GbE NIC for the WAN-facing side. DDR3/DDR3L with ECC protects against soft errors in 24x7 operation, an essential requirement for security appliances in data-center and carrier networks. The firmware support packages from NXP and QorIQ Linux SDK simplify integration with open-source firewall distributions (VyOS, OPNsense, custom Yocto/VxWorks stacks).

🏭

Industrial Control and Rugged Compute

The P5021 family is widely used in factory automation, substation controllers, and rugged industrial gateways because of its long-life cycle, hardware determinism, and rich I/O mix including PCIe, USB, multiple Ethernet MACs, and ECC-protected memory. The P5021NSE72QC's 0-90 °C commercial temperature rating fits sealed control cabinets or fan-cooled plants; its successor 'NXN' temperature grade parts cover wider ranges. Built-in SEC 4.0 also supports the cryptographic primitives required for IEC 62443 and NERC CIP compliance in industrial networks. NXP provides real-time OS support (VxWorks, INTEGRITY, Green Hills INTEGRITY), making the part drop-in friendly for defense and industrial programs with long support windows.

🖥️

Network Attached Storage (NAS) and Secure File Servers

In NAS and secure file-server roles, the P5021NSE72QC pairs its two e5500 cores with multiple 1 GbE MACs plus SATA 2.0 and PCIe-attached SAS/RAID controllers to drive multi-disk enclosures. The 64-bit DDR3 controller with ECC reads/writes RAID5/6 parity computations efficiently, while SEC 4.0 accelerates AES-XTS or AES-CBC for at-rest encryption of disks. The dual USB 2.0 ports can drive a front-panel display, a UPS signaling interface, or an external backup tape drive. Linux NAS distributions (custom OpenWrt forks, Debian, or Yocto-built NAS images) have mature support for the P5021, simplifying integration vs. building firmware from scratch.

📡

Long-Life Telecom Line Card / Edge Compute

Service provider edge networks and 4G/5G baseband processing cards benefit from the P5021NSE72QC's integrated crypto engine and Ethernet-rich I/O for backhaul aggregation, IPSec tunnels, and MEC (Multi-access Edge Compute) workloads. Its 2.2 GHz dual-core performance is well-matched to small-cell DU/RU control functions, and the PCIe lanes hook cleanly into DSP arrays or radio frontends. The hardware-quality ECC memory interface supports long-term reliability expectations of carrier deployments. Long-term availability through distributors like Rochester Electronics helps telcos bridge the design-to-deployment gap once the part transitions to last-time-buy.

✈️

Aerospace and Defense Secure Compute Platform

Defense and aerospace programs that began development in the QorIQ P5 era rely on the P5021NSE72QC for tamper-resistant, radiation-tolerant compute. The hardware SEC 4.0 engine provides FIPS 140-2 compliant cryptographic primitives and supports Secure Boot and Trust Architecture 4.0 anti-tamper flows required by mission computers, cryptographic units, and secure gateway form factors. Multiple Ethernet MACs interface with MIL-STD-1553 or ARINC 664 bridge hardware via PCIe-mounted mezzanine cards, and the ECC-protected DDR3 memory bus meets DO-254/DO-178C derived reliability guidance. The FCBGA's small form factor enables SWaP-optimized mezzanine layouts for unmanned systems and avionics LRUs.

🛰️

Aerospace-grade Single Board Computer (SBC)

In a single-board computer deployed in unmanned vehicles and airborne platforms, the P5021NSE72QC acts as the host MPU driving on-board cameras, radar/sonar preprocessing, and inertial navigation subsystems. The PCIe lanes accommodate GPU or VPX backplane connectivity, while the 10 GbE MAC enables Gbit+ sensor aggregation upstream to mission computers. Hardware SEC 4.0 supports the secure-key handling that DISA and NIST standards require for sensitive platform data at rest. The 37.5 x 37.5 mm FCBGA's high integration reduces the SBC footprint, enabling compact 3U VPX or VME card designs common in defense. ECC-protected DDR3 ensures that single-event upsets in avionics environments don't corrupt mission data, supporting DO-254 hardware-level reliability targets in this class of compute.

Because the part is at last-time-buy on NXP's website, lead time is expected to lengthen over time, so ordering in advance of your production build is strongly recommended.
P5021NSE72QC vs P5021NXN72QC - what is the difference?
The P5021NSE72QC and P5021NXN72QC are both QorIQ P5 dual-core 2.2 GHz devices in the same 1295-ball FCBGA package, but they differ in the operating temperature grade and silicon revision banding. The 'E72' suffix denotes the commercial 0°C to 90°C grade on Rev 2.1 silicon, while 'NXN72' refers to a different temperature grade/qualification tier. Both are pin-to-pin compatible in the same FCBGA footprint, making them drop-in thermal-grade alternatives for your design once you confirm the exact grade codes against the NXP product selector.
P5021NSE72QC vs T2080NXE8TTB - which is better for my application?
The P5021NSE72QC is a dual-core e5500 at 2.2 GHz while the T2080NXE8TTB is from NXP's T2080/T2 family with different core counts and I/O mix; the two are not direct drop-in equivalents and they live in different packages. Choose the P5021NSE72QC when you need higher per-core frequency, more cache, and the rich SEC 4.0 + 10 GbE + DDR3 with ECC feature set. Choose the T2080 when you need quad-core density or the specific T2 datapath features; in both cases plan for a board redesign because the packages differ.
When should I choose P5021NSE72QC over a newer NXP processor?
Choose the P5021NSE72QC when you need long-term continuity for an existing board design, when the existing firmware supports e5500 cores, or when purchasing through last-time-buy channels is acceptable for your lifecycle forecast. Choose a newer NXP part (LayerScape LS1046A, LX2160A) when you need more PCIe lanes, modern 10G/25G/100G SerDes, lower power per core, or planned longevity beyond what a last-time-buy QorIQ P5 device can offer. NXP's product selector and cross-reference tools list replacement candidates, including the suggested LS family.
What is the best drop-in replacement for P5021NSE72QC?
Within the same NXP QorIQ P5 family the closest drop-in alternatives are the P5021NXN72QC (same FCBGA-1295 footprint, industrial thermal grade instead of commercial) and other P5021 suffix variants such as P5020NSE72QC (lower speed grade, fewer cores enabled) and the P5040 family (quad-core, same FCBGA footprint but higher thermal dissipation). For a cross-brand drop-in, no QorIQ P5 pin-compatible alternative exists from another vendor; the only true replacements live within NXP and require verifying package and silicon revision against your BOM.
Where do I download the P5021NSE72QC datasheet PDF?
The official NXP P5021 datasheet (family-level, covering P5021/P5020/P5010/P5040) can be downloaded from the product page at https://www.nxp.com/docs/en/data-sheet/P5021DS.pdf. Distributor hosted copies (current and historical revisions) are also available on NXP's part detail page (https://www.nxp.com/part/P5021NSE72QC), DigChip, and AllDatasheet. The document covers block diagrams, electrical characteristics, pinout, package drawings, and RCW boot configuration for Rev 2.1 silicon.
What package is the P5021NSE72QC in and what is its pinout?
The P5021NSE72QC ships in a 1295-ball Fine Pitch Ball Grid Array (FCBGA), 37.5 x 37.5 mm body, surface-mount only. Pin assignments are dense and span SerDes lane mapping, DDR3 DRAM byte lanes, multiple Ethernet MAC interfaces (RGMII, 10G), USB, SDHC, TDM, SPI, I2C, GPIO, JTAG, and multiple core/IO power and ground balls. The full ball-map is published only in the NXP P5021 family datasheet, so download and use the official pinout before laying out or reworking any PCB footprint.
Does the P5021NSE72QC need a heatsink or special thermal management?
Yes. The dual-core e5500 at 2.2 GHz in a 37.5 x 37.5 mm FCBGA dissipates substantial power and requires a heatsink plus careful PCB layout. NXP's reference design uses a heatsink bonded to the top of the package (lid-down, not PCB-mounted), with thermal interface material applied at the FCBGA lid; airflow of 1-3 m/s is typically required for continuous full-load operation. Always follow NXP's thermal guidelines in the datasheet and validate with a thermal probe on your final mechanical stack-up.
Is the P5021NSE72QC still in production or discontinued?
Per the NXP product page (https://www.nxp.com/part/P5021NSE72QC), the P5021NSE72QC is at End of Life / last-time-buy status, with a discontinuance and replacement product change notice. Production of new NXP silicon has stopped; remaining inventory is sold through authorized channels like Rochester Electronics (which also offers long-term continuity stock). If your product's expected lifecycle extends beyond NXP's last-time-buy window, plan to migrate to a current NXP replacement such as the Layerscape family.
What interfaces and peripherals does P5021NSE72QC integrate?
The P5021NSE72QC integrates dual e5500 cores, DDR3/DDR3L controller with ECC, PCIe Gen2/Gen3, up to ten 1 Gigabit Ethernet MACs, two 10 Gigabit Ethernet (XAUI/KR) MACs, SATA 2.0, dual USB 2.0, SD/MMC, SPI, I2C, UART, TDM, GPIO, JTAG, an SEC 4.0 security engine, and an Enhanced Local Bus. This combination removes the need for separate bridge chips in a typical routing/security appliance, simplifying the BOM.
What is the difference between QorIQ P5 and QorIQ T2 / Layerscape?
QorIQ P5 (P5021/P5040) uses the PowerPC e5500 core at up to 2.2 GHz, while QorIQ T2 (T2080/T4240) shifts to e6500 cores with high throughput and 64-bit coherency, and Layerscape (LS1043A, LS1046A, LX2160A) uses 64-bit ARM Cortex-A cores. Performance-per-watt is significantly better on Layerscape, while QorIQ P5 retains advantages in mature software ecosystems and lifecycle continuity for defense/industrial programs.
Can a QorIQ P5040 replace a P5021NSE72QC on the same board?
Yes - the P5040 quad-core and P5021 dual-core share the same 1295-ball FCBGA footprint, the same supply rails, and the same SerDes lane mapping conventions, with the main change being the enabled core count and the resulting thermal envelope. The P5040 draws more worst-case current than the P5021, so your power-delivery network (decoupling, regulator sizing, thermal solution) must be re-validated before swapping. The boot RCW also differs and must be reprogrammed to match the new core configuration.
What is the optimal RPM and voltage scaling for the P5021NSE72QC in a fan-cooled chassis?
For chassis-cooled operation, NXP recommends sizing a heatsink that keeps junction temperature under 105 °C at maximum ambient (90 °C for the 'E' commercial part). At full 2.2 GHz dual-core load, the FCBGA-1295 typically needs 200-400 LFM of forced-air cooling or a large extruded heatsink bonded to the lid with a quality TIM. Smart chassis fans with PWM control, combined with on-die thermal diodes read via the SEC/JTAG interface, give the best acoustic/thermal trade-off.

Notas de diseño

Estimated: with both e5500 cores at 2.2 GHz on a 45 nm SOI process in a 37.5 x 37.5 mm FCBGA, peak die-side dissipation typically falls in the 15-22 W range at full continuous load. This requires a TIM-bonded heatsink at the lid plus 200-400 LFM of forced airflow. Place on-board thermal diodes (per NXP reference design) and continuously poll junction temperature via SEC/JTAG telemetry. If the design is sealed or convection-only, derate ambient to 70 °C or switch to a P5020NXN72QC variant for lower frequency-grade parts.

Estimated: use a minimum 6-layer PCB with a dedicated solid ground plane directly beneath the 37.5 x 37.5 mm FCBGA footprint. Place a minimum of one 0.1 µF X7R ceramic within 5 mm of each VDD/VSS power ball, plus 4.7 µF and 22 µF bulk decoupling at the regulator outputs. Route the PCIe, 10G SerDes, and USB 2.0 differential pairs with 85 Ω differential impedance and keep all reference-plane stitching vias within 1 mm of the trace. Avoid signal layer changes through this BGA except on inner matched-stripline layers to minimize bit-error rate on 10 GbE XAUI/KR links.

Do not assume the boot RCW from a P5021 Rev 1.x board will work on a Rev 2.1 P5021NSE72QC - the SerDes lane mapping and PLL tuning on Rev 2.1 differ slightly. Cross-check the NXP P5021DS datasheet's Rev 2.1 errata and RCW examples. Also: the DDR3 controller does not auto-calibrate PLL re-configurations after warm reset, so a full POR is required when changing memory clock ratios. Watch the ODT (on-die termination) setting when using 4-rank DIMM topologies to avoid false CRC errors at 1600 MT/s.

Estimated: route the 10 GbE XAUI signals within the same inner layer (e.g. layer 4) with continuous reference to ground; avoid routing them on the same layer as the DDR3 byte-lane strobes to prevent crosstalk. DDR3 byte-lane length matching should be tightened to within 50 mil (1.27 mm), and write clock to clock-DQS skew tuned per the NXP datasheet. Place a guard ring of ground stitching vias around the BGA breakouts to provide a low-impedance return path for the high-frequency transitions of SEC 4.0 and PCIe Gen3 edges.
