PIC16C67-04/L Descripción general

The Microchip Technology PIC16C67-04/L is an 8-bit CMOS OTP (One-Time Programmable) RISC microcontroller operating at up to 4 MHz instruction rate, with 14 KB (8K x 14) of program memory and 368 bytes of SRAM, housed in a 44-pin PLCC package. It is part of Microchip's PIC16C6x mid-range family and features 33 digital I/O lines, a 5-channel 8-bit ADC, two capture/compare/PWM modules, a USART, and a synchronous serial port.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer containing a processor core, memory, and programmable I/O peripherals. The PIC16C family sits within the 8-bit microcontroller hierarchy: MCU -> 8-bit MCU -> PIC -> PIC16 mid-range -> PIC16C6x OTP family. It is designed for embedded control applications where deterministic instruction timing, low power, and simple peripheral integration are prioritized over raw processing throughput.

Key features of the PIC16C67-04/L include 35 single-cycle instructions (200 ns per instruction at 20 MHz oscillator, 1 us at 4 MHz), a wide operating voltage range of 2.5 V to 6.0 V, and three operating temperature grades: commercial, industrial, and extended. The device uses Harvard architecture with separate program and data buses, allowing instruction fetch to occur in parallel with operand access. It draws only 15 uA typical at 5 V / 4 MHz and 1 uA typical at 3 V / 32 kHz, making it suitable for battery-backed or sleep-dominant designs.

Typically applied in industrial control front-ends, automotive body electronics, sensor signal conditioning, and embedded instrumentation, the PIC16C67-04/L was widely adopted in the late 1990s and early 2000s as a workhorse OTP MCU. Its OTP memory is one-time programmable and cannot be erased, so this part is intended for high-volume production where firmware is final and field updates are not required.

When designing with this part, verify OTP memory constraints for your firmware revision strategy early in the project. For prototypes or products requiring field updates, choose a Flash-based PIC16F equivalent. The 44-pin PLCC footprint is socketable, which simplifies development lab programming and final assembly.

What is the PIC16C67-04/L?
The PIC16C67-04/L is a Microchip Technology 8-bit CMOS RISC microcontroller with 14 KB of OTP program memory, 368 bytes of RAM, 33 I/O pins, and a 4 MHz instruction rate, housed in a 44-pin PLCC package. According to the Microchip PIC16C6x datasheet, it belongs to the PIC16 mid-range family and integrates ADC, USART, SPI/I2C, and two CCP modules on-chip, making it a system-on-chip for embedded control.
What is the program memory size of PIC16C67-04/L?
The PIC16C67-04/L contains 14 KB of OTP (one-time programmable) program memory, organized as 8K x 14-bit words. Because it is OTP (not Flash), the program memory can be written only once and cannot be erased, so this part is targeted at high-volume production where the firmware is final. For prototype or field-updateable designs, use a Flash-based PIC16F equivalent instead.
How much RAM does PIC16C67-04/L have?
The PIC16C67-04/L has 368 bytes of general-purpose SRAM for variable storage and stack. This is sufficient for typical mid-range PIC applications such as sensor readout, simple state machines, and serial protocol handling. Larger RAM-intensive buffers (e.g., for full TCP/IP stacks or large frame buffers) would require an extended PIC family such as PIC18 or PIC24.
What is the maximum clock speed of PIC16C67-04/L?
The PIC16C67-04/L operates with a maximum oscillator frequency of 20 MHz, which yields a 4 MHz instruction rate (one instruction cycle per four oscillator cycles) or 200 ns instruction cycle time. At the same time, the part number suffix -04 indicates the 4 MHz-rated speed bin, so it is tested and guaranteed up to 4 MHz instruction throughput. Higher-rated siblings (e.g., PIC16C67-20/L) support the full 20 MHz oscillator.
What is the operating voltage of PIC16C67-04/L?
The PIC16C67-04/L operates from 2.5 V to 6.0 V supply, with typical applications at 5 V or 3.3 V rails. The wide range allows direct battery operation (e.g., 4x AA NiMH at 4.8 V nominal) and 3.3 V systems where regulated rails are not tightly trimmed. Always verify brown-out and ADC reference voltage behavior at the lowest supply corner during design validation.
Is the PIC16C67-04/L still in production?
No, the PIC16C67-04/L is obsolete and no longer in production. Distributors such as DigiKey list the part with limited or no stock. For new designs, Microchip recommends migrating to Flash-based PIC16F or PIC18 equivalents that share the same peripheral set but allow in-circuit reprogramming. Existing customers are advised to secure last-time-buy inventory for long-life-cycle products.
Where to download PIC16C67-04/L datasheet PDF?
The PIC16C67-04/L datasheet is available from Microchip Technology's official product page at https://www.microchip.com/en-us/product/PIC16C67, and is mirrored on distributor and third-party sites such as FindIC and Veswin. According to the Microchip product page, the datasheet covers electrical characteristics, memory maps, peripheral registers, and timing diagrams. A single document covers the PIC16C66/PIC16C67 family, so the same PDF applies to multiple MPN suffixes.
Where to find PIC16C67-04/L pinout?
The PIC16C67-04/L pinout is documented in the Microchip PIC16C6x family datasheet, with the 44-pin PLCC pin assignment shown on page 1 of that document. Key pins include OSC1/OSC2 (clock), MCLR (reset), RA0-RA5, RB0-RB7, RC0-RC7, and RD0-RD7 ports, plus VDD and VSS. The package is socketable in a standard 44-pin PLCC socket, which simplifies prototype programming and rework.
What is the difference between PIC16C67-04/L and PIC16C67-04/P?
The PIC16C67-04/L and PIC16C67-04/P share identical silicon (14 KB OTP, 4 MHz, 33 I/O) but differ in package: /L denotes 44-pin PLCC, while /P denotes 40-pin PDIP (DIP-40). The /P variant has fewer available I/O pins due to the smaller package. Both parts are obsolete; pick the variant matching your existing PCB footprint when sourcing replacements.
What is the best drop-in replacement for PIC16C67-04/L?
The closest drop-in replacement is the PIC16F877-04/L, which shares the same 44-pin PLCC pinout and 33 I/O but uses Flash memory (14 KB) instead of OTP, allowing field reprogramming. The PIC16C67T-04/L is also pin-compatible and uses the same OTP memory in tape-and-reel packaging. Both replacements preserve the existing PCB footprint while modernizing the code-storage technology.
Can PIC16C67-04/L be replaced by PIC16F877?
Yes, the PIC16F877-04/L is the most common drop-in replacement for PIC16C67-04/L: same 44-pin PLCC pinout, same 33 I/O, same 14 KB program memory (Flash instead of OTP), and same peripheral set (ADC, USART, SPI, I2C, CCP). However, code compiled for PIC16C67 must be recompiled for PIC16F877 because the Flash and OTP variants differ slightly in configuration fuse definitions.
What is the price of PIC16C67-04/L?
The PIC16C67-04/L unit price is approximately $3.65 to $4.74 per piece as of 2026-09-18, based on inventory listings at SeekIC and distributor pages. Pricing varies with quantity and availability since the part is obsolete - small-quantity stock carries a premium. For new designs, migrating to PIC16F877-04/L typically yields lower unit cost and better long-term supply.

Notas de diseño

The PIC16C67-04/L uses One-Time Programmable (OTP) memory, which can be written only once and cannot be erased. Engineers accustomed to Flash-based PIC16F parts often make the mistake of planning firmware revisions through the same MCU - this is impossible with OTP. Use a PIC16F877-04/L or PIC18F equivalent during development, and reserve OTP parts for the final production firmware revision only. Engineering samples of OTP devices are typically expensive and limit iteration speed.

Estimated: at 5 V supply and 4 MHz oscillator, the PIC16C67-04/L draws approximately 15 mA active current and 5 uA standby current per the datasheet. For battery-powered designs, leverage the sleep mode and use a 32.768 kHz Timer1 clock for real-time wake-up. Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of each VDD pin (there are two: pins 11 and 32) and a bulk 10 uF electrolytic on the main 5 V rail to suppress motor and relay switching transients common in industrial control.

The PLCC-44 package is socketable, which greatly simplifies prototype programming and rework. Always include a PLCC-44 socket footprint in your design even for production, because it allows field replacement without hot-air rework. Keep analog traces (RA0-RA5 to ADC inputs) short and routed away from digital switching nodes such as the oscillator and PWM outputs. Add a ground pour under the IC and stitch vias around the oscillator area to minimize EMI coupling into the analog front-end.

Place the 20 MHz crystal or ceramic resonator as close as possible to OSC1 (pin 13) and OSC2 (pin 14) with traces shorter than 5 mm. Use a guard ring tied to ground around the oscillator area to prevent high-frequency noise coupling into adjacent analog inputs. The MCLR pin (pin 1) should be pulled up through a 10 kohm resistor to VDD and decoupled with a 100 nF capacitor; this RC delay prevents false resets during power-up brown-out events.
