PIC16F1619-I/P Descripción general

The Microchip PIC16F1619-I/P is an 8-bit PIC microcontroller from the PIC® XLP™ 16F family with Functional Safety (FuSa) support, offering 14KB (8K x 14) of program Flash memory, 1KB of RAM, and 32MHz CPU performance in a 20-pin PDIP through-hole package. The -I suffix designates the industrial operating temperature range of -40C to +85C, and the device supports 2.5V, 3.3V, and 5V operation.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, program memory (Flash/ROM), working memory (RAM), and a rich set of peripheral IP blocks (ADC, timers, communication interfaces) into one IC. Within the broader taxonomy, the PIC16F1619 sits in the 8-bit mid-range PIC16F family -> PIC microcontroller -> microcontroller -> embedded processor -> semiconductor. Its XLP™ (eXtreme Low Power) designation indicates aggressive nanoWatt sleep-current design, making it a strong fit for battery-powered or energy-harvesting applications. The 20-PDIP package, with 0.300-inch pin spacing, is the most breadboard- and prototype-friendly footprint Microchip produces.

Key differentiating features include a 10-bit A/D converter with up to 17 channels, a 24-bit Signal Measurement Timer (SMT) for precision time/frequency capture, Configurable Logic Cells (CLC) for hardware glue logic, Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG), Zero-Cross Detection (ZCD), and a peripheral pin select (PPS) block that remaps digital peripherals to any I/O pin. The 32MHz internal oscillator (8 MIPS) eliminates external crystals in many designs and supports factory-calibrated accuracy over temperature and voltage.

Architecturally, the PIC16F1619 uses the standard enhanced mid-range 16-bit instruction word core, giving 14-bit wide opcodes and a flat linear program-memory model. The MIPS-style core executes most instructions in one cycle, and combined with the 32MHz FOSC this delivers 8 MIPS throughput - adequate for closed-loop control, sensor fusion, and modest communication stacks.

Typical applications include small motor control (BLDC, stepper, brushed DC) using the CWG and SMT, lighting control via dimming and zero-cross switching, household appliances, IoT edge nodes, capacitive-touch human interfaces, sensor signal conditioning, and general-purpose embedded control in consumer and industrial products. The 20-pin count keeps BOM low while still providing enough I/O for typical control panels.

When designing with this device, plan the pin assignment early because PPS lets most digital peripherals move to any RP pin, but analog channels and the ICSP programming pins (PGED/PGEC) are fixed. Always reserve a stable voltage rail with a 100nF decoupling capacitor close to VDD and a bulk capacitor near the IC, and verify that total I/O sink/source current stays within the per-pin and per-port limits documented in the electrical characteristics section of the manufacturer datasheet.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in PDIP alternatives, and practical design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet alone.

Aplicaciones típicas

PIC16F1619-I/P es adecuado para 7 aplicacións: Small Brushless DC (BLDC) Motor Control, AC Line Zero-Cross Dimming and Switching, Capacitive Touch User Interface, Sensor Signal Conditioning and IoT Edge Node, Automotive Interior and Body Electronics, Battery-Operated Consumer Appliance Control, Industrial Sensor Interface Module.

🏭

Small Brushless DC (BLDC) Motor Control

The PIC16F1619's 32 MHz core, 24-bit Signal Measurement Timer, Complementary Waveform Generator, and 10-bit ADC make it a strong fit for sensorless or Hall-sensor BLDC motor control. The CWG outputs complementary PWMs with programmable dead-band, suitable for driving a three-phase half-bridge directly. The 24-bit SMT captures back-EMF zero-cross timing with sub-microsecond resolution, simplifying sensorless commutation. Designers typically pair the MCU with three gate drivers (e.g., Microchip TC442x family) and the 17 ADC channels handle current sensing, BEMF feedback, and fault monitoring simultaneously. With XLP™ nanoWatt sleep, the system can drop to microamp quiescent current when the motor is idle.

💡

AC Line Zero-Cross Dimming and Switching

The PIC16F1619's on-chip Zero-Cross Detection (ZCD) peripheral directly senses the AC mains zero-cross event through a current-limiting resistor and optocoupler, removing the need for an external zero-cross circuit. Combined with the configurable CCP/PWM peripherals and the 14 KB Flash for slope-control or phase-control firmware, the MCU can implement TRIAC-based dimmers, solid-state relays, and motor-speed controls. The 10-bit ADC monitors RMS voltage and temperature for protection, while the XLP™ sleep modes keep standby power below regulatory limits. Operating from 2.3-5.5 V on a small isolated supply, this configuration is widely used in smart lighting and home-automation products.

🧩

Capacitive Touch User Interface

The PIC16F1619's mTouch® peripheral (implemented via the ADC and CLC blocks) supports capacitive-touch sensing on any pin, enabling buttons, sliders, and proximity sensors without dedicated touch ICs. The 24-bit SMT captures touch time-of-flight with high resolution, and the CLC offloads simple signal conditioning in hardware. With 14 KB Flash available, designers can fit rich HMI state machines plus communication stacks (I2C, UART, or LIN). The XLP™ nanoWatt modes reduce idle current below 50 nA in deep sleep, ideal for battery-powered remote controls and wireless switches. A typical 8-button keypad with LED feedback fits in this MCU plus a few discrete components.

🌐

Sensor Signal Conditioning and IoT Edge Node

The PIC16F1619's 10-bit ADC (up to 17 channels) handles multiple analog sensors (temperature, light, humidity, gas) while its CLC blocks implement digital filtering and threshold logic without CPU overhead. The 32 MHz core (8 MIPS) processes sensor fusion algorithms and simple serial-protocol stacks. The 1 KB RAM is sufficient for moving-average filters and small buffers. Designers typically pair this MCU with a low-cost wireless module (sub-GHz or BLE) for IoT edge nodes in agricultural, environmental, or industrial monitoring. The wide 2.3-5.5 V operating range supports both 3.3 V coin-cell and 5 V USB-powered applications.

🚗

Automotive Interior and Body Electronics

Inside the cabin, the PIC16F1619's industrial -40C to +85C range, Functional Safety (FuSa) features, and robust peripheral set make it suitable for ambient lighting controllers, seat-position memories, mirror-adjust modules, and HVAC blend-door actuators. The CLC and CWG peripherals offload waveform generation while the 24-bit SMT handles precise timing. Although this '-I' (industrial) variant is not AEC-Q100 qualified, the same die is used in PIC16F1619-E automotive grades for higher-temperature body-electronics modules. The 20-PDIP package aids in-service replacement on legacy automotive production lines.

🔋

Battery-Operated Consumer Appliance Control

With XLP™ nanoWatt technology (typical 20 nA sleep current), the PIC16F1619 suits battery-operated small appliances such as electric toothbrushes, beard trimmers, and handheld kitchen tools. The 32 MHz internal oscillator eliminates a crystal, the 14 KB Flash holds motor-control plus user-interface firmware, and the CWG can drive low-side MOSFETs for brushed DC motors. Operating down to 2.3 V allows single-cell Li-ion or two-cell alkaline operation. The 10-bit ADC monitors battery voltage for low-battery indication, and the CLC peripherals debounce buttons in hardware to wake the MCU from sleep only when needed, maximizing battery life.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Interface Module

In industrial 4-20 mA loops and 0-10 V analog interface modules, the PIC16F1619 provides 17 ADC channels for multi-channel sensor reading, UART/SPI/I2C for digital sensor or display interface, and the CLC blocks for hardware-level interlocks. The 32 MHz core can run Modbus RTU slave stacks over RS-485 within the 14 KB Flash budget. The 20-PDIP package suits DIN-rail-mount carrier boards with through-hole assembly for rugged industrial environments. The -40C to +85C industrial temperature range supports outdoor enclosures, while on-chip ZCD can be repurposed for AC-mains synchronization in motor drives or process-control actuators.

Notas de diseño

Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of the VDD pin (pin 20) and a bulk capacitor (1-10 uF) close to the IC. The PIC16F1619 can operate from 2.3 V to 5.5 V; if the application uses a switching regulator nearby, add a ferrite bead in series with VDD to suppress switching noise from coupling into the analog reference. The on-chip voltage regulator requires an external inductor or capacitor on the VCORE pin per the datasheet - omitting it prevents the device from starting.

Keep analog traces (ADC inputs, Vref) short and away from PWM switching lines like the CWG outputs. Use a ground pour on the bottom layer to provide a low-impedance return path. The PGED (pin 18) and PGEC (pin 19) lines must be accessible for in-circuit debugging; do not route signal traces under these pads to allow a clip-on debugger header. Place the MCLR pull-up (typically 10 kohm) close to pin 5 to ensure clean reset.

Always configure unused I/O pins as outputs (set low) or inputs with internal pull-ups enabled to minimize power consumption and reduce noise injection. The PIC16F1619 has Peripheral Pin Select (PPS) for most digital peripherals - forgetting to unlock PPS (PPSLOCK bit) at startup is a common cause of seemingly dead GPIOs. When using ZCD on AC mains, the current-limiting resistor network must keep peak currents below the datasheet rating or the pin will be damaged. Do not exceed 5.5 V on VDD; the -I industrial variant is not 5 V tolerant on all pins when running at 3.3 V.

The 24-bit SMT is sensitive to clock jitter; use the internal 32 MHz HFINTOSC or a clean external crystal and route the timer input pin away from PWM edges. For capacitive touch sensing, shield the sense traces with a ground guard ring and avoid running them under noisy signal traces. The CLC outputs have limited drive strength (typically 5-10 mA); buffer them with an external gate driver or resistor when driving LEDs directly.
