PIC16F19197-E/MR Descripción general
A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that combines a CPU core, memory, and programmable peripherals. The 8-bit PIC16F family is widely used in cost-sensitive and low-power applications where deterministic interrupt response and ultra-low standby current are valued. The PIC16F19197 specifically adds eXtreme Low-Power (XLP) technology, an integrated LCD driver with charge pump, Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) that operate without CPU intervention, and intelligent analog features for sensor and display applications.
Key features include the integrated LCD driver with charge pump that directly biases segmented glass, eliminating the need for an external bias supply. The XLP architecture supports deep sleep modes down to sub-microamp currents, while the charge pump keeps the LCD drive active during battery-low conditions. Intelligent analog features (12-bit ADC2, 5-/8-bit DAC, low-power comparator, zero-cross detect) allow autonomous signal acquisition without waking the CPU.
Typical applications span battery-powered metering, IoT sensor nodes with LCD readouts, medical wearables, home automation keypads, and industrial HMI panels. The 64-pin QFN EP package provides ample I/O and the thermal pad aids dissipation, while the integrated RTCC supports calendar-based scheduling and battery backup.
Designers should plan the charge-pump capacitor values per the datasheet, ensure the EP pad is soldered to a sufficient copper pour, and reserve I/O for PPS remapping to ease layout. The high-current I/O pins drive LED backlighting directly, simplifying BOM.
This page combines distributor inventory, drop-in alternatives in the same 64-pin QFN EP package, and practical design notes that go beyond the manufacturer datasheet.

Aplicaciones típicas
PIC16F19197-E/MR es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: Battery-Powered Smart Meter, Wearable Health Monitor with LCD, Industrial HMI Keypad Controller, IoT Sensor Node with Display, Automotive Dashboard Sub-display, Home Automation Keypad.
Battery-Powered Smart Meter
The PIC16F19197-E/MR is well-suited for residential electricity or water meters that require long battery life and an LCD readout. The integrated LCD driver with charge pump generates the segment bias directly from a 1.5 V or 3 V cell, eliminating a boost converter. XLP deep-sleep currents under 1 uA combined with the 12-bit ADC2 enable multi-year battery operation while still measuring consumption accurately. The 56 KB Flash stores calibration data and TOU tariffs.
Recomendado
Wearable Health Monitor with LCD
Wearable devices such as glucose meters or pulse oximeters benefit from the PIC16F19197-E/MR combination of LCD driver, low-power comparator, and 12-bit ADC2. The charge pump keeps the LCD visible even when the battery drops below 2 V, while the DAC drives a haptic or buzzer feedback. The CIP peripherals let the MCU sleep while the ADC and SMT timers continuously sample without waking the CPU, enabling months of runtime from a coin cell.
Recomendado
Industrial HMI Keypad Controller
Industrial control panels and HVAC thermostats commonly use the PIC16F19197-E/MR as the LCD-and-keypad brain. The integrated charge-pump LCD driver supports large segmented or dot-matrix displays without external bias ICs. PPS remaps any peripheral to almost any pin, simplifying PCB layout when the LCD glass is on the opposite side of the board. ZCD detects AC line zero-crossings for triac dimming of backlighting.
Recomendado
IoT Sensor Node with Display
For IoT sensor nodes that must show local readings on a small LCD without Wi-Fi or BLE radios, the PIC16F19197-E/MR provides ample Flash for protocol stacks while keeping standby power negligible. The RTCC with battery backup keeps accurate time even when the main supply drops, allowing timestamped data logging. PPS allows the UART or I2C pins to be reassigned, easing integration with ESP32 or LoRa companion modules.
Recomendado
Automotive Dashboard Sub-display
The automotive-grade PIC16F19197-E/5LXVAO variant of this die is qualified for vehicle sub-displays such as climate-control panels and infotainment secondary readouts. The wide -40 C to +125 C operating range handles under-dash thermal stress, while the LCD charge pump keeps segments visible during cranking when the battery voltage sags. High-current I/O pins drive LED backlighting directly, simplifying the BOM versus a discrete driver IC.
Recomendado
Home Automation Keypad
Smart-home keypads for lighting, blinds, and alarm arming benefit from the PIC16F19197-E/MR LCD with capacitive touch integration. The CWG and PWM peripherals drive status LEDs or simple buzzer tones without extra timer ICs. RTCC schedules automatic lighting scenes, while the WWDT supervises firmware execution to recover from glitches. PPS remaps pins to route signals around the antenna area without re-routing the PCB.

Notas de diseño
The 64-pin QFN EP package dissipates heat through the exposed pad. Solder the EP to a copper pour of at least 1 square inch on the top or bottom layer with multiple thermal vias to the opposite plane. Without this, theta_JA rises above 60 C/W and the junction may exceed +125 C in enclosed LCD housings. Use a 0.3 mm paste stencil aperture over the EP for proper solder voiding.
Place the 0.1 uF VDD decoupling capacitor within 3 mm of each VDD/VSS pair. For multi-VDD-pin MCUs like this one, distribute four decoupling caps evenly around the package. Add a 10 uF bulk capacitor near the IC. Keep the charge-pump flying capacitor traces short and symmetric to minimize ripple on the LCD bias supply, which otherwise causes segment ghosting.
Do not leave unused I/O pins floating - configure them as outputs or enable the internal weak pull-ups. The MCLR pin must have a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD; if not used, route MCLR to VDD through the resistor to prevent spurious resets. The ICD pins (RB6/RB7) must be reserved for in-circuit debugging or the firmware must disable ICD to free them as GPIO.
Use PPS to remap peripherals so high-current LED backlight traces can be routed close to their connector without crossing sensitive analog lines. Keep the OSC1/OSC2 traces short and surround them with a ground guard ring if using a crystal. The RTCC backup battery should be tied to RTCC VDD through a Schottky diode to allow uninterrupted timekeeping when main power is removed.
