PIC16HV616T-I/ST Descripción general
An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, non-volatile program memory (Flash/ROM), working RAM, peripherals, and I/O on one die. PIC microcontrollers use a modified Harvard RISC architecture: program memory is accessed on a separate bus from data memory, allowing instruction fetch and operand read in a single cycle. The PIC16 family sits in the entry-level tier of Microchip's 8-bit line, balancing low cost, low power, and deterministic interrupt latency for cost-sensitive embedded control. PIC MCUs are widely used in white goods, sensor signal conditioning, lighting controls, and battery management front-ends.
Key features of the PIC16HV616T-I/ST include the NanoWatt XLP (eXtreme Low Power) technology, an internal 8 MHz precision oscillator (factory calibrated to +/-1 percent typical), a 10-bit ADC with up to 8 channels, two 8-bit timers and one 16-bit timer, an enhanced PWM/capture/compare module, and an on-chip shunt regulator that allows direct connection to high-voltage buses. The device also integrates an 8 MHz internal RC, a comparator, and supports in-circuit serial programming (ICSP) via two pins. Operating voltage spans 2.0 V to 5.5 V on the regulated logic rail, with the HV shunt regulator handling the higher supply levels.
The PIC16HV616T-I/ST is typically used in appliance controls, power-supply front ends, smart battery chargers, LED lighting drivers, and industrial sensor interface boards. Its 12 I/O and 3.5KB Flash comfortably support state-machine designs, simple PWM loops, and slow-protocol slave implementations. The combination of TSSOP-14 small footprint and integrated shunt regulator reduces BOM cost versus PIC16F616 designs that need an external LDO.
When designing with this part, derate the shunt regulator dissipation carefully: at VIN = 12 V and 5 mA logic current, the regulator absorbs roughly 60 mW, which is fine for TSSOP copper but demands a copper-pour heat-spreader above 25 mA. Always add a series resistor on the HV pin to set shunt current, and provide a low-ESR bypass of at least 0.1 uF on VDD.

Aplicaciones típicas
PIC16HV616T-I/ST es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: Appliance Control Front-End, 12 V LED Lighting Driver, Smart Battery Charger Front-End, Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioner, Automotive Interior Lamp Controller, White-Good Display and Keypad Scanner.
Appliance Control Front-End
The PIC16HV616T-I/ST's integrated HV shunt regulator lets it connect directly to a 12 V or 15 V rectified mains supply in washing machines, dishwashers, and microwave ovens, eliminating an external LDO and reducing BOM by one IC. Its 12 I/O and enhanced CCP deliver enough PWM channels to drive solenoid valves, triac gates, and relay coils. The 8 MHz internal oscillator removes crystal cost, while NanoWatt XLP keeps standby power below 1 uA to meet energy-star standby budgets.
Recomendado
12 V LED Lighting Driver
The PIC16HV616T-I/ST pairs a 10-bit ADC with the enhanced CCP PWM module to drive constant-current LED strings from a 12 V or 24 V bus without an external regulator. The HV shunt regulator absorbs the VIN-to-VDD drop, freeing the PCB footprint for higher-current LED traces. 3.5 KB Flash supports dimming curves, thermal foldback, and DMX or 0-10 V analog dimming protocols in a single low-cost MCU.
Recomendado
Smart Battery Charger Front-End
For lead-acid or multi-cell Li-ion chargers, the PIC16HV616T-I/ST connects directly to a 12-15 V adapter rail via the HV shunt regulator and uses its 10-bit ADC to monitor battery voltage and charge current. The on-chip comparator implements over-current protection without an external op-amp. 128 B RAM and 3.5 KB Flash are enough to implement CC/CV profiles, temperature compensation, and state-of-charge estimation in firmware.
Recomendado
Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioner
The PIC16HV616T-I/ST integrates a 10-bit ADC, on-chip comparator, and PWM output, which lets it digitise, linearise, and re-drive analog sensor signals in 4-20 mA loops. The HV shunt regulator lets the MCU share the loop's 24 V supply rail. NanoWatt XLP Sleep modes keep quiescent draw low enough to operate from loop power, and the 20 MHz core supports up to 100 ksps ADC sampling for vibration or strain-gauge conditioning.

Automotive Interior Lamp Controller
Although not AEC-Q100 qualified, the PIC16HV616T-I/ST is widely used in non-safety automotive interior modules such as ambient lighting, footwell LEDs, and door-handle illumination where it operates from the 12 V body battery. The HV shunt regulator eliminates the LDO that would otherwise sit between battery and MCU, while the enhanced CCP PWM drives MOSFET-gated LED strings. Its 14-pin TSSOP fits the tight PCB outlines typical of lamp modules.
Recomendado
White-Good Display and Keypad Scanner
The PIC16HV616T-I/ST serves as the keypad and LED-scan controller in washing machines, ovens, and refrigerators, where it scans up to 12 I/O directly without an I/O expander. Its 20 MHz throughput debounces keys, multiplexes 7-segment or matrix LED displays, and services UART or I2C links to a host controller. The HV shunt regulator lets the MCU share a 12 V rectified rail with the rest of the appliance, simplifying the power tree.

Notas de diseño
The PIC16HV616T-I/ST's internal HV shunt regulator replaces an external LDO when the board is fed from 12-15 V. Size the HV series resistor so that the shunt current sits between 3 mA and 25 mA over the full range of VIN and ILOAD; below 3 mA the regulator loses regulation, above 25 mA the TSSOP-14 thermal budget is exceeded. A 470-ohm resistor at VIN = 12 V typically lands at ~10 mA shunt current, which the datasheet recommends as a safe design centre.
Place a 0.1 uF X7R bypass capacitor within 5 mm of the VDD pin and a 10 uF bulk capacitor near the HV series resistor. The TSSOP-14 thermal pad is not present on this package, so use a copper pour on the top layer under pin 14 (HV) to spread shunt heat. Avoid routing noisy switching traces adjacent to the HV node to keep regulator ripple below 50 mV.
Do not leave the MCLR pin floating; tie it to VDD through a 10 kohm resistor and a 100 nF cap to ground for proper reset behaviour. ICSPDAT and ICSPCLK must be brought out to a header or test pad for in-circuit programming. The HV pin must never be left floating - it will drift and may force VDD above its 5.5 V absolute maximum, destroying the MCU.
