PIC16LF1776-I/SO Descripción general

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF1776-I/SO is an 8-bit PIC® XLP™ 16F microcontroller with 14KB Flash program memory, 1KB RAM, and an integrated 10-bit DAC, housed in a 28-pin SOIC package. It runs at up to 32MHz core clock from a 1.8V to 3.6V supply and targets Intelligent Analog and digital peripheral integration.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, program and data memory, peripherals, and I/O on one die. The PIC16 family is Microchip's mid-range 8-bit RISC architecture, with each instruction typically executing in one clock cycle. Within the PIC16 taxonomy, the PIC16LF1776 sits in the PIC16(L)F177x sub-family, which adds XLP™ ultra-low-power technology, op amps, comparators, and PWM peripherals above the baseline PIC16F17xx. The 'LF' prefix denotes the low-voltage (1.8V-3.6V) variant, distinguishing it from the 5V-tolerable PIC16F1776.

Key features include 14KB (8K x 14 words) self-programmable Flash, 1KB SRAM, 256 bytes of EEPROM, a 10-bit DAC with multiple output channels, configurable op amps, high-resolution PWM modules, multiple UART/SPI/I²C interfaces, and an enhanced 10-bit ADC. The 28-SOIC (SO) package offers 25 I/O pins with 25mA sink/source capability per pin, suitable for through-hole-style breadboarding despite being surface-mount.

Architecturally, the PIC16LF1776 uses a 14-bit instruction word RISC core with a hardware accumulator, an interrupt controller, and an internal 32MHz oscillator with PLL. The 'XLP' (eXtra Low Power) features include nanoWatt XLP sleep modes drawing under 50 nA typical, plus Peripheral Pin Select (PPS) for flexible signal routing. The Intelligent Analog integration makes this part well-suited for closed-loop control without external analog ICs.

Typical applications include LED lighting and color mixing drivers, switch-mode power supply (SMPS) digital control, battery charging, BLDC/PMSM motor control via complementary PWMs, sensor signal conditioning with on-chip op amps, and general-purpose industrial control nodes. Industrial operating temperature range (-40°C to +85°C) supports factory automation deployments.

When designing with this part, verify the ICSP™ programming pin assignments are accessible on the PCB and that the 28-SOIC land pattern matches JEDEC MS-013 (300-mil SO). Decouple VDD with a 100nF ceramic capacitor placed within 5mm of the pin. Notas de diseño

The PIC16LF1776-I/SO requires a clean 1.8V-3.6V supply. Decouple VDD (pin 1 and pin 28) with a 100nF X7R ceramic capacitor placed within 5mm of each VDD pin, plus a bulk 1uF-10uF tantalum or ceramic capacitor at the PCB power entry. The MCU draws up to ~6mA at 32MHz full activity, dropping to <50nA in deep sleep. For battery-powered designs, use an MCP1700 or MCP1802 LDO; for switch-mode power, use an MCP16311 or similar. Note that the 'LF' part has lower core current than the 'F' part at the same clock speed.

Place the 28-SOIC footprint on a JEDEC MS-013 300-mil SOIC land pattern. Keep traces to the ICSP programming pins (RB6/ICSPCLK and RB7/ICSPDAT, pins 26 and 27) short and accessible for the PICkit or MPLAB SNAP header. Add test pads for these pins even if programming is factory-only. For noise-sensitive analog designs, separate digital and analog supply traces with a ferrite bead or filter capacitor; the PIC16LF1776's on-chip op amps benefit from a quiet analog AVSS/AVDD pair.

A common mistake is confusing the LF (1.8V-3.6V) and F (1.8V-5.5V) variants in a 5V system - this will cause the LF part to latch up or damage. Another pitfall is forgetting to configure the PPS (Peripheral Pin Select) registers - default pin assignments after reset may not match your schematic. Also note that the 28-SOIC and 28-SPDIP pinouts are NOT identical: SO and SP package pin functions are reassigned, so a PCB layout for one is not interchangeable with the other. Always verify pin assignments against Microchip datasheet DS40001839B before committing to a layout.

When using the PIC16LF1776's PWM outputs to drive power MOSFETs, keep the PWM trace length below 25mm and avoid running PWM traces parallel to analog feedback traces. Place gate-driver grounds and MCU analog grounds on separate ground returns tied at a single star point to prevent switching noise from coupling into ADC measurements. For high-resolution PWM (16-bit at ~10 kHz switching), the MCU's PWM slew rate is 2.5V/ns into 50pF load - sufficient for direct low-side MOSFET drive up to ~50 kHz.
