PIC16LF1782-E/SS Descripción general

The Microchip PIC16LF1782-E/SS is an 8-bit PIC16 microcontroller with 3.5KB Flash program memory, 256B RAM, and 256B EEPROM, packaged in a 28-pin SSOP (5.30mm width). It operates up to 32MHz from a wide 1.8V-3.6V supply and is built on Microchip's XLP (eXtreme Low Power) technology platform.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, non-volatile program memory, working RAM, and a rich set of analog and digital peripherals. Within the broader hierarchy, the PIC16LF1782 belongs to the 8-bit microcontroller family, which sits under microcontrollers, which themselves fall under microprocessors and finally under semiconductors. Microcontrollers are distinguished from microprocessors by their on-chip memory and peripherals, allowing them to operate as standalone embedded controllers in everything from consumer appliances to industrial sensor nodes.

The PIC16LF1782 is differentiated by its integrated advanced analog peripherals: a 12-bit ADC (analog-to-digital converter) with up to 14 channels, an 8-bit DAC (digital-to-analog converter), and operational amplifiers that allow designers to build closed-loop signal conditioning without external op-amps. It also features an integrated 32kHz oscillator, multiple PWM (pulse-width modulation) outputs, and Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) such as CLC, NCO, and PWM that operate without CPU intervention.

Architecturally, the device uses Microchip's enhanced mid-range 8-bit core with a 14-bit instruction word, allowing dense code storage. The XLP technology platform enables nanoWatt sleep currents below 50 nA typical, making the device well-suited for battery-powered applications where quiescent draw dominates the energy budget. The 28-SSOP package exposes a generous pin count for a small-outline footprint while remaining compatible with hand-soldering and standard reflow profiles.

Typical applications include portable medical and fitness sensors, IoT edge nodes, low-power wireless sensor transmitters, industrial process controllers, and white-goods user-interface modules. Designers choose this MCU when they need rich analog performance (12-bit ADC + 8-bit DAC + op-amps) and ultra-low sleep current in a 28-pin outline.

When designing with the PIC16LF1782-E/SS, ensure the configured system clock (FOSC) does not exceed 32MHz and that VDD decoupling is placed within a few millimeters of the supply pins. The 'LF' prefix denotes the low-voltage (1.8V-3.6V) variant - the non-LF PIC16F1782 operates up to 5.5V, which is not a drop-in swap for firmware written against the LF voltage range.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, parametric drop-in alternatives from the same PIC16 family, and practical low-power design notes that go beyond the manufacturer datasheet.

💊

Portable Medical Sensor Hub

The PIC16LF1782-E/SS is well-suited for portable medical sensor hubs because its 12-bit ADC delivers clinical-grade measurement resolution while the integrated 8-bit DAC enables programmable excitation or bias signals for bridge sensors. Its XLP sleep current below 50 nA typical allows multi-year coin-cell operation in wearable pulse-oximeter or continuous-glucose-monitor form factors. The 32MHz core can run signal-processing and BLE-comms handshaking simultaneously without bottlenecking. Designers place the MCU between the sensor front-end and a wireless SoC, using the on-chip op-amps for active filtering and the SSOP-28 footprint keeping the BOM compact on a flex or rigid-flex PCB. Compared with discrete op-amp + ADC designs, this part reduces component count by 4-6 parts per channel.

🧩

IoT Edge Sensor Node

For battery-powered IoT edge nodes, the PIC16LF1782-E/SS provides the right balance of analog performance and sleep current. Its 12-bit ADC reads environmental sensors (temperature, humidity, light) with adequate resolution while the XLP architecture keeps idle current under 50 nA. The 8-bit DAC allows analog calibration or actuator drive outputs. The 32MHz core handles LoRaWAN or sub-GHz protocol stacks via SPI-attached transceivers, and the 28-SSOP footprint leaves room for a compact coin-cell holder. Compared with ARM Cortex-M0+ alternatives, this part consumes roughly one-third the deep-sleep current at similar active throughput.

🏭

Industrial Process Controller

The PIC16LF1782-E/SS fits industrial process-controller front-ends thanks to its integrated 12-bit ADC and on-chip op-amps for 4-20mA loop signal conditioning. The -40C to +125C industrial temperature grade and XLP low-power operation support remote, solar-powered installations. Designers use the 8-bit DAC to generate 0-10V actuator set-point outputs and the PWM peripherals to drive valve or heater elements. The 32MHz core is sufficient for PID-loop control at sub-millisecond update rates, and the SSOP-28 package meets the industrial 600V clearance spacing when laid out on a 1.6mm PCB.

📺

White-Goods User Interface Module

In washing-machine, dishwasher, or microwave user-interface modules, the PIC16LF1782-E/SS drives segmented or matrix LED/LCD displays, reads capacitive touch via the integrated peripherals, and manages appliance state machines. Its 8-bit DAC produces tone or beep signals without a separate audio codec. The 32MHz core handles UI animations while leaving headroom for the main control-loop interrupts. The 28-SSOP package's narrow body suits the height-constrained UI board of front-panel designs, and the XLP sleep mode keeps standby power below 0.5W for energy-star compliance.

Battery-Powered Wireless Transmitter

For battery-powered wireless sensor transmitters such as remote keyless entry, garage-door openers, or weather stations, the PIC16LF1782-E/SS provides sensor reading, encryption, and protocol framing at sub-1 mA active current. The XLP sleep mode below 50 nA extends battery life into the 5-10 year range. The 12-bit ADC handles battery-voltage monitoring, and the 8-bit DAC can drive sub-GHz transceiver reference circuits. The 28-SSOP package offers enough GPIO for status LEDs, buttons, and SPI-attached radio while remaining reflow-solderable in volume production.

🚗

Automotive Sensor Subsystem

The PIC16LF1782-E/SS handles non-safety automotive sensor subsystems such as seat-occupancy detectors, climate sensors, and interior lighting controllers. Its -40C to +125C operating range covers under-dash and cabin environments, and the 12-bit ADC delivers accurate battery-voltage and temperature readings. The 8-bit DAC provides programmable LED dimming, and the integrated op-amps condition sensor signals without external components. Designers pair it with automotive-rated companions and follow AEC-Q100 part-selection discipline when higher-grade components are required; this -E/SS part is not itself AEC-Q100 qualified.

Guía de selección

Choose the PIC16LF1782-E/SS when you need an 8-bit Microchip MCU with integrated 12-bit ADC, 8-bit DAC, op-amps, and XLP deep-sleep under 50 nA in a 28-SSOP package for portable, battery-powered sensor designs. Choose the PIC16LF1783-E/SS instead if your firmware is approaching the 3.5KB Flash ceiling or needs the larger 512B RAM. Choose the PIC16LF1784-E/SS for expanded peripheral counts in the same outline. Choose the PIC16LF1782-E/SO for hand-rework-friendly prototype builds (wider SOIC body) but note the footprint differs from SSOP. Choose the PIC16F1782-E/SS when your system operates above 3.6V (up to 5.5V) - the F variant is pin-compatible but tolerates a wider supply. Avoid using the LF variant on 5V rails - it can be damaged. For non-Microchip drop-ins, very few cross-brand 8-bit MCUs share the same peripheral mix in 28-SSOP, so most designers stay within the PIC16 family when migrating.

Notas de diseño

Estimated: at 32MHz active, the PIC16LF1782 core draws roughly 4-6 mA from a 3.3V supply; in sleep it drops below 50 nA typical. Place a 100nF decoupling capacitor within 5mm of each VDD pin (pins 10 and 28) and add a bulk 10uF tantalum or ceramic on the supply rail. For battery designs, gate any external load with a MOSFET controlled by a GPIO so the MCU can fully power down peripherals during sleep. The 'LF' voltage ceiling of 3.6V means the part cannot be powered directly from a 5V rail - use an MCP1700 LDO if stepping down from a higher source.

The PIC16LF1782-E/SS dissipates negligible power thanks to its low operating voltage and moderate clock rate, so thermal management is rarely an issue at room temperature. In enclosed industrial installations at +85C ambient, ensure the SSOP-28 footprint provides at least 50 mm^2 of ground-plane copper to spread heat. The -E suffix extends the operating range to +125C, but at that extreme verify peripherals remain within spec - some ADC gain-error drift will occur above +85C and may require software compensation.

Place the 100nF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to each VDD/VSS pair (pins 9/10 and 27/28) with a short, wide trace to ground. For the ICSP programming pins RB6/ICSPCLK and RB7/ICSPDAT (pins 17/18), route them to a programming header with no series resistors - Microchip ICD tools drive these directly. If using the internal oscillator, leave pins 5/6 (OSC1/OSC2) configurable as GPIO by tying to a known state with a weak pull-up. Avoid running high-current switching signals parallel to the analog ADC traces to minimize coupled noise.

Do not confuse the LF (1.8-3.6V) variant with the F (1.8-5.5V) variant when sourcing - the LF part can be permanently damaged by a 5V supply. The -E/-I temperature-grade suffix also matters: E = industrial (-40C to +125C), I = standard industrial (-40C to +85C). Forgetting to configure the configuration words (CONFIG1/CONFIG2) for the correct oscillator and watchdog settings is a common bring-up issue - use MPLAB X IDE default config templates rather than chip-erased configuration.

When using the on-chip op-amps for analog front-end conditioning, route analog ground (AGND) and digital ground (DGND) on separate planes that join at a single point near the VSS pins. Keep analog traces short and away from PWM outputs. The 12-bit ADC requires a clean VREF; bypass VREF+ with 100nF and 10uF capacitors. For applications driving the 8-bit DAC into a low-impedance load, add an external op-amp buffer - the on-chip DAC output impedance is typically several kOhms and cannot drive loads below 10 kOhm directly without distortion.
