PIC16LF873A-I/ML Descripción general

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF873A-I/ML is an 8-bit CMOS RISC microcontroller with nanoWatt technology, featuring 7KB (4K x 14) of FLASH program memory, 192 bytes of RAM, and 128 bytes of EEPROM data memory in a 28-pin QFN (6x6 mm) package with exposed pad. It executes instructions in a 200 ns cycle (10 MHz oscillator) and offers 22 digital I/O pins, a 10-bit 5-channel analog-to-digital converter (ADC), USART, MSSP (SPI/I2C), and two 8/16-bit timers with capture/compare/PWM capability. Operating voltage spans 2.0V to 5.5V across -40C to +85C industrial range.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, RAM, non-volatile program memory, peripheral modules, and I/O on one die; in the PIC16F family the RISC Harvard architecture with 35 single-word instructions simplifies firmware development and yields deterministic interrupt response. The PIC16LF873A sits in the hierarchy: 8-bit microcontroller -> PIC16 mid-range family -> nanoWatt power-managed MCUs -> embedded controllers -> integrated circuits.

Key features include In-Circuit Serial Programming (ICSP) for field upgrades, a wide operating voltage window (2.0V-5.5V) that supports both 3.3V and 5V designs, programmable code protection, and low-power SLEEP/idle modes with <1 uA typical current. The 10-bit ADC with five input channels enables direct sensor interfacing, while the USART and MSSP provide asynchronous serial and synchronous SPI/I2C master/slave communications. Two CCP modules deliver PWM, capture, and compare functions for motor and lighting control.

The Harvard-style architecture separates program and data buses, enabling simultaneous fetch and access. With 4K 14-bit instruction words, the device supports high-level C compilation via MPLAB XC8 while remaining efficient for hand-written assembly. The exposed thermal pad on the QFN package provides low thermal resistance for industrial environments.

Typical applications include industrial sensor signal conditioning with ADC input, 3.3V-5V bridge power conversion, low-power wireless sensor nodes, HVAC fan motor PWM control, and battery-powered portable instrumentation where the wide voltage range and nanoWatt sleep currents extend operating life.

When designing with the PIC16LF873A-I/ML, place 100 nF decoupling capacitors within 3 mm of each VDD pin and tie the exposed pad (EP) to a clean ground pour. For ADC accuracy, add an external voltage reference and avoid routing digital traces under analog traces on inner layers.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning

The PIC16LF873A-I/ML suits industrial sensor signal conditioning boards that digitize 0-5V transducer outputs. Its 10-bit ADC with 5 input channels provides 4.88 mV resolution at 5V VDD, sufficient for thermocouple pre-amplifier output, strain-gauge bridge amplification, or 4-20 mA loop sense resistor monitoring. The wide 2.0V-5.5V supply range accepts both 24V industrial rails stepped down to 5V and battery-derived 3.3V supplies. The USART streams digitized values to a host PLC or displays results on a local LCD driven by GPIO bit-banging. Industrial -40C to +85C rating covers factory-floor enclosures. The QFN package's small 6x6 mm footprint fits inside sensor heads or DIN-rail transmitter housings.

📱

Battery-Powered Wireless Sensor Node

The PIC16LF873A-I/ML is well suited to battery-powered wireless sensor nodes where sleep current dominates battery life. nanoWatt SLEEP mode draws less than 1 uA at 3V, allowing a 2400 mAh AA pack to support years of operation if the MCU wakes only briefly to take an ADC reading and transmit. The 2.0V-5.5V range accepts the voltage droop of alkaline or lithium chemistries without brown-out reset. The MSSP SPI port connects directly to sub-GHz transceiver ICs, and 22 GPIO pins accommodate multiple sensor channels and indicator LEDs. The 28-QFN's exposed pad ties to ground for thermal stability during RF transmission bursts. PIC firmware leverages ICSP for over-the-air bootloader updates.

🏭

HVAC Fan Motor PWM Control

The PIC16LF873A-I/ML drives HVAC fan motors through its two 16-bit Capture/Compare/PWM (CCP) modules that generate complementary or variable-frequency PWM outputs at up to 10-bit resolution. Closed-loop speed control reads a tachometer or back-EMF signal via the 10-bit ADC and adjusts duty cycle accordingly. The USART connects to a central HVAC controller over RS-485 through an external transceiver. Industrial -40C to +85C operation covers plenum-mounted enclosures. The MSSP I2C bus reads temperature and humidity sensors for variable-air-volume (VAV) logic. Code protection prevents firmware cloning by aftermarket competitors.

🔧

3.3V to 5V Bridge / Protocol Converter

The PIC16LF873A-I/ML acts as a level-translating bridge between 3.3V UART peripherals and legacy 5V RS-232 equipment. With VDD at 3.3V, GPIO pins meet LVCMOS thresholds; with VDD at 5V, the same firmware drives TTL-level serial lines. The wide operating range allows a single PCB design to strap-select 3.3V or 5V via a regulator jumper. The MSSP handles SPI-to-UART or I2C-to-UART protocol conversion for system integrators migrating older 5V subsystems to 3.3V SoCs. The 7KB FLASH holds table-driven protocol conversion firmware; 192B RAM buffers incoming packets.

🔧

Portable Handheld Instrumentation

The PIC16LF873A-I/ML forms the core of portable handheld instruments such as digital multimeters, clamp meters, or environmental meters where size, weight, and battery life matter. Its 28-QFN 6x6 mm footprint leaves room for the LCD driver, op-amp front end, and AA-cell holders in a compact enclosure. The 10-bit ADC digitizes voltage, current, and temperature sensors with adequate resolution for consumer-grade accuracy. nanoWatt SLEEP between measurements extends battery life to hundreds of hours. ICSP allows field firmware updates as new measurement modes are added.

💡

LED Lighting Control Systems

The PIC16LF873A-I/ML manages addressable RGB LED strips and DMX-512 lighting controllers. Its 22 GPIO pins directly drive low-current LED driver enable lines, while the two CCP modules generate high-resolution PWM dimming signals up to 10 kHz without flicker. The USART receives DMX-512 frames at 250 kbaud through an external RS-485 transceiver. The 10-bit ADC reads ambient light sensors for daylight harvesting and adjusts output brightness accordingly. nanoWatt SLEEP during off-hours minimizes standby power in architectural lighting installations.

🧩

Educational MCU Training Boards

The PIC16LF873A-I/ML is widely adopted in university microcontroller courses and embedded-systems labs because of its simple 35-instruction PIC16 architecture, comprehensive Microchip documentation, and free MPLAB X toolchain. The 28-QFN package suits modern SMD training boards while DIP adapters allow breadboard experimentation. Students program the device with PICkit 4 or MPLAB Snap debuggers, learning GPIO, ADC, USART, I2C, SPI, and timer peripherals. Migrating later to PIC18 or dsPIC33 series builds on the same PIC assembly foundation.

Choose a low-Iq LDO such as MCP1700 (1.6 uA quiescent) to preserve battery life. Bulk-decouple VDD with 100 nF X7R placed within 3 mm of the supply pin; add 10 uF tantalum or polymer bulk capacitance if the MCU drives power-hungry peripherals from the same rail.

The 28-QFN package's exposed thermal pad (EP) provides the primary heat-dissipation path. Solder the EP to a continuous ground pour of at least 50 mm^2 to keep junction temperature within ratings. The package's theta_JA of approximately 30 C/W on a 4-layer JEDEC test board drops to over 80 C/W on a small 2-layer board with a poor thermal via pattern; add thermal vias to the EP for high-current applications driving multiple GPIO outputs simultaneously.

Route the analog inputs AN0-AN4 away from digital switching signals; the 10-bit ADC samples the analog voltage at the S/H capacitor, and noise coupling from clock or PWM traces introduces conversion errors. Use a separate analog ground island if possible, joined to digital ground at a single point near the MCU. For 5V ADC operation above 4.096V, provide an external MCP1541 4.096V reference to avoid ADC ratiometric ambiguity with VDD noise.

Configuration words are read at every reset - never leave them at the default erased state (all 1s). Always program CONFIG1 through CONFIG4 with proper oscillator, watchdog, brown-out, and code-protection settings before code can run reliably. Missing configuration word settings is the most common reason first-time PIC16 designs fail to start. Use MPLAB X's configuration bit viewer to set WDT_OFF, BOREN_SOFT, and IESO_OFF for typical industrial designs.

The ICSP clock (PGC, RB6) and data (PGD, RB7) pins must be accessible in the final assembly for field firmware updates. Do not populate resistors or buffers in series with these pins unless they can be bypassed for programming. The MCLR pin should be pulled up to VDD with a 10 kohm resistor and decoupled with a 100 nF capacitor; missing MCLR capacitance causes spurious resets in noisy industrial environments.
