PIC17C43-33I/P Descripción general

The Microchip PIC17C43-33I/P is an 8-bit RISC CMOS OTP-based microcontroller running at 33 MHz instruction frequency (121 ns instruction cycle), packaged in a 40-pin PDIP through-hole format and offered in industrial temperature grade. The device integrates 8 KB of OTP program memory, 454 bytes of data RAM, 33 digital I/O lines, and Microchip's PIC17C4x architecture that is upwards compatible with the PIC16C5X, PIC12CXXX and PIC16CXX families. The '33I' suffix denotes the 33 MHz maximum clock rate and the industrial (-40C to +85C) operating range, while the trailing '/P' identifies the plastic DIP package. The PIC17C43 family is one of the earliest high-performance 8-bit PIC microcontrollers ever shipped by Microchip.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, program memory, data RAM, I/O peripherals, and timers onto one silicon die; a RISC MCU executes most instructions in a single clock cycle, simplifying pipelining and improving throughput per MHz. The PIC17C4x family sits above the PIC16 mid-range line in Microchip's original 8-bit hierarchy (PIC17C4x -> PIC16 -> PIC12 -> baseline PIC), targeting applications that need more performance, more RAM, and more I/O than a PIC16 can deliver while still using a familiar PIC instruction set. The 'C' in PIC17C43 indicates an OTP (one-time-programmable) CMOS process, suitable for prototyping and low-to-mid volume production where firmware is stable.

Key electrical features include a 33 MHz maximum clock (8.25 MIPS sustained throughput), supply voltage of 4.5 V to 6.0 V (typical 5 V), 33 I/O pins, an 8-bit data bus external to the core, hardware USART, 16-bit capture/compare/PWM, and a programmable 8-bit prescaler watchdog timer. The industrial temperature grade guarantees operation from -40C to +85C. The PIC17C4x instruction set includes hardware 8x8 multiply, which is uncommon in mid-range 8-bit MCUs and accelerates DSP-like inner loops.

Typical applications include industrial control panels, motor control front-ends, point-of-sale terminals, instrumentation, and legacy embedded system maintenance where 5 V rail, through-hole packaging, and a 16-bit-wide external memory bus are still valued. Because the part is OTP, it is most often used where the firmware is finalized and order volumes justify mask-programmed economics.

When designing with PIC17C43-33I/P, ensure the Vdd decoupling network keeps ripple below 50 mV, place the 40-pin DIP socket allowing UV-erase window devices as development substitutes, and verify that any code migration to the recommended PIC18F4220 (Microchip's official modern replacement) preserves register-level behavior expected by legacy firmware libraries. This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives, and practical design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet alone.

The PIC18F4220 is also available in 40-pin PDIP, but firmware must be ported because the architecture (instruction set, register map, and configuration bits) differs. Choose PIC17C43-33I/P only for legacy firmware preservation; choose PIC18F4220 for new designs.
Is PIC17C43-33I/P pin-to-pin compatible with PIC17C42A?
Yes, the PIC17C43-33I/P is pin-to-pin compatible with the PIC17C42A-33I/PQ variant in the 40-pin PDIP footprint. Both share the same PIC17C4x die platform, identical pinout, and memory bus, differing only in program memory size (8 KB OTP vs 4 KB OTP on the PIC17C42A). Verify interrupt vector locations and configuration bits when porting between the two parts, but the external hardware can remain identical.
When should I choose PIC17C43-33I/P over a modern PIC18F series MCU?
Choose PIC17C43-33I/P only when you must maintain bit-exact firmware compatibility with a legacy PIC17C4x design, when an obsolete-certified spare-parts inventory must be replicated, or when the 16-bit external memory bus is required and a PIC18 migration is not economically justified. Choose a modern PIC18F (such as PIC18F4220), PIC24, or dsPIC for any new design that requires in-circuit re-programmability, lower power consumption, smaller package options, or active Microchip support.
What is the best drop-in replacement for PIC17C43-33I/P?
The best modern drop-in replacement for PIC17C43-33I/P is the Microchip PIC18F4220-I/P, which retains the 40-pin PDIP footprint and provides upgrade headroom. According to Microchip, the PIC18F4220 is the official migration path. For exact legacy compatibility, the PIC17C43-33I/PQ (MQFP package variant) and PIC17C42A-33I/P (lower-density OTP variant) are SAME-BRAND drop-in alternatives in the same family.
What is the operating temperature range of PIC17C43-33I/P?
The PIC17C43-33I/P operates from -40 C to +85 C (industrial grade), as indicated by the 'I' suffix in the part number. According to the Microchip datasheet, the industrial temperature grade is qualified for use in factory-floor equipment, outdoor enclosures (without condensation), and automotive cabin electronics, but is not qualified for under-hood automotive (AEC-Q100) or military (-55 C to +125 C) environments.

PIC17C43 has 8 KB of OTP program memory, while PIC17C42A has 4 KB. Both share the same PIC17C4x core, same 454-byte RAM, same peripheral set, and pin-compatible 40-pin PDIP and 44-pin MQFP packages. Choose PIC17C43 for code that grows beyond 4 KB; choose PIC17C42A for cost-sensitive applications that fit in 4 KB and where the lower-density die gives a slight price advantage.
Does PIC17C43-33I/P support hardware multiply?
Yes, the PIC17C43-33I/P includes a single-cycle hardware 8x8 multiply instruction in its 58-instruction set, which is uncommon in mid-range 8-bit MCUs. According to the Microchip instruction set reference, MULWF executes in one instruction cycle (121 ns at 33 MHz) and stores the 16-bit result in PRODH:PRODL. This makes the PIC17C4x suitable for inner-loop DSP-style signal processing that mid-range PICs would otherwise emulate with multi-cycle shift-and-add code.
What is the supply voltage range of PIC17C43-33I/P?
The PIC17C43-33I/P operates from 4.5 V to 6.0 V Vdd, with a typical supply of 5 V. The part is NOT a 3.3 V-tolerant MCU; downstream logic on a 3.3 V rail would require level shifters. According to the Microchip PIC17C4x datasheet, the device is optimized for legacy 5 V industrial environments rather than modern 1.8-3.3 V low-power designs. Migrating to PIC18F or dsPIC33 is recommended if your system rail is below 4.5 V.

Notas de diseño

Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor directly between Vdd (pin 27) and Vss (pin 10) within 5 mm of the package, and add a bulk 10 uF tantalum or aluminum electrolytic near the supply pin. At 33 MHz the PIC17C4x core switching transients can inject 50-100 mA spikes into the 5 V rail; inadequate decoupling causes brown-out resets and unreliable OTP programming. Estimated: total in-rush at power-on with all 33 I/O switching simultaneously is approximately 60 mA sustained plus 100 mA peaks.

For OTP programming, route the /MCLR/Vpp pin (pin 1) to a programming header with a 10 kohm pull-up to Vdd and a separate HV programming voltage path (typically 13 V). Connect OSC1 (pin 39) and OSC2 (pin 40) directly to the crystal or resonator with traces under 10 mm and guard them with a ground ring. Keep the external memory bus traces (RC0-RC7, RD0-RD7) matched in length within 5 mm to minimize skew when accessing external program memory; this is especially important at 33 MHz (one instruction cycle every 121 ns).

Do not assume PIC17C43-33I/P firmware is portable to PIC18F4220 without code review. The PIC17C4x uses a unique register file organization, different bank-switching scheme, and a hardware multiply instruction (MULWF) that PIC16/PIC18 compilers may not generate. EEPROM emulation on PIC17C43 must be done in software because the device has no internal EEPROM; PIC18F4220 has true internal EEPROM and the migration path requires the user to choose between porting the emulation code or rewriting to use hardware EEPROM APIs. For new designs, abandon PIC17C4x entirely and start on PIC18F or dsPIC33.

Estimated: PIC17C43-33I/P dissipates approximately 250 mW at 33 MHz with all 33 I/O switching and 5 V supply; in a 40-pin PDIP without a heat spreader, the junction-to-ambient thermal resistance is approximately 50 C/W. At 85 C ambient, junction reaches 97.5 C, well within the industrial limit but with only modest margin. For enclosed industrial cabinets without forced airflow, derate clock frequency to 25 MHz or migrate to a smaller-footprint PIC18F that dissipates less power.
