TVP5151IPBSR Descripción general

The Texas Instruments TVP5151IPBSR is an ultralow-power NTSC/PAL/SECAM video decoder housed in a 32-pin TQFP (PBS) package measuring 5x5 mm. It accepts composite (CVBS) and S-Video analog inputs and converts them to 8-bit ITU-R BT.656 digital video with embedded syncs, or to 8-bit 4:2:2 with discrete syncs. The decoder supports NTSC (J, M, 4.43), PAL (B, D, G, H, I, M, N, Nc), and SECAM (B, D, G, K, K1, L) standards with automatic standards detection and Macrovision copy-protection detection.

A video decoder is a mixed-signal integrated circuit that digitizes analog baseband video from cameras, set-top boxes, or playback devices so a digital processor, image signal processor, or display controller can consume the stream. Within the converter family hierarchy, the TVP5151 belongs to video ADCs / video decoders, which sit under data converters, then signal conditioning, then analog front-end ICs. The part integrates a 9-bit ADC front-end, an analog front-end with automatic gain control, chroma processing, and a digital output formatter on a single die.

Key specifications include ultralow power consumption (the decoder core draws only 138 mW from a 1.7 V analog and 1.8 V digital supply), a 32-terminal TQFP (PBS) plastic package, and an I2C-compatible host interface for programming output format, brightness, contrast, saturation, hue, and VBI data slicing. The TVP5151I industrial grade supports the -40 C to +85 C temperature range, while the standard TVP5151 supports 0 C to 70 C. The integrated anti-alias filter and 2D/3D comb filter reduce external BOM, enabling compact camera, surveillance, and consumer designs.

Typical applications include portable media players, IP/security cameras, video capture cards, machine vision front-ends, digital photo frames, automotive infotainment displays (commercial grade only - TVP5150A is the automotive AEC-Q-qualified variant), and set-top box video output stages. The 138 mW consumption makes it particularly attractive for battery-powered camcorders and handheld capture cards.

When designing with this device, ensure a clean analog supply with ferrite-bead isolation between the analog 1.8 V rail and digital 1.8 V rail. Provide a stable 14.31818 MHz VCO reference for the decoder's internal timing recovery. Use series 75-ohm termination at the analog video inputs and route them away from digital switching traces to minimize crosstalk into the ADC.

Aplicaciones típicas

TVP5151IPBSR es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: Portable Media Player Video Capture, IP / CCTV Security Camera Front-End, USB Video Capture Stick / Streaming Device, Digital Photo Frame / Media Player Display Input, Automotive Rear-Seat Infotainment Display (Commercial Grade), Industrial Machine Vision Capture Card.

📱

Portable Media Player Video Capture

The TVP5151IPBSR's 138 mW typical dissipation is the lowest in TI's video-decoder family and is the specific reason portable media players standardize on this part rather than the TVP5150. Placed between the CMOS sensor / analog video input and the application processor's BT.656 capture port, it digitizes NTSC/PAL composite or S-Video at 9-bit resolution and emits 8-bit 4:2:2 ITU-R BT.656 with embedded EAV/SAV sync words - directly consumable by MPEG-2/H.264 ASICs without glue logic. The on-chip 2D/3D comb filter eliminates the LDI chroma artifact common in stationary battery-adjacent layouts, and the I2C host port lets the application processor dynamically tune brightness, contrast, and hue without interrupting capture. Designers should run the analog and digital 1.8 V rails from separate LDOs with ferrite-bead isolation to keep ADC SNR above 50 dB in sleep scenarios.

🎥

IP / CCTV Security Camera Front-End

For IP cameras and CCTV DVRs accepting NTSC/PAL/SECAM analog inputs (covering all CCTV/CCIR standards), the TVP5151IPBSR integrates a 9-bit ADC, 2D/3D adaptive comb filter, and Macrovision detector in a single TQFP-32 die. According to TI's video-decoder application literature, the on-chip anti-alias filter and chroma bandpass eliminate external LPF components. The 138 mW dissipation enables sealed outdoor IP66 housing without thermal management. The integrated VBI slicer supports Gemstar 1x/2x EPG data extraction, useful for surveillance DVRs that must embed closed captions. Drop-in compatibility with the automotive TVP5150AM1IPBSR (same PBS package) means the same PCB can be qualified for both consumer CCTV and fleet telematics markets.

🎬

USB Video Capture Stick / Streaming Device

USB video capture sticks that digitize analog camcorder, set-top box, or VHS output use the TVP5151IPBSR as the analog-to-BT.656 converter feeding the USB controller's video port. The 138 mW power budget fits easily within USB-2 bus-powered 500 mA envelopes, and the 5x5 mm TQFP-32 footprint keeps the dongle form factor compact. According to the TI TVP5151 datasheet, the I2C-controlled output formatter can output 8-bit ITU-R BT.656 or 8-bit 4:2:2 with discrete syncs, letting one design target multiple OS capture drivers. For Linux/macOS capture stacks expecting 27 MHz pixel clock, configure the decoder's output through the I2C register map per the datasheet's output timing section.

📺

Digital Photo Frame / Media Player Display Input

Digital photo frames with composite video inputs use the TVP5151IPBSR to accept NTSC/PAL playback devices such as those for legacy camcorder archive viewing. The decoder's automatic standard detection eliminates the user-facing NTSC/PAL switch on the bezel. According to TI's application notes, the integrated Macrovision detector and VBI slicer add value for archival DVR-style products. The industrial -40 C to +85 C temperature grade (I suffix) supports outdoor kiosk and marine-information display screens. Drop-in compatibility with the TVP5150AM1IPBSR (same PBS footprint) means the same PCB layout serves both consumer and automotive information screens, sharing NRE tooling across product lines.

🚗

Automotive Rear-Seat Infotainment Display (Commercial Grade)

For non-safety automotive rear-seat entertainment displays, the TVP5151IPBSR accepts composite video from headrest-mounted DVD players and emits BT.656 to the rear-seat display controller. The industrial -40 C to +85 C operating temperature covers cabin-temperature stress, and the 138 mW dissipation enables fan-free sealed displays. For front-seat infotainment or instrument cluster video, use the AEC-Q100-qualified TVP5150AM1IPBSR instead (same PBS footprint, AEC-Q100). According to TI's automotive video literature, the TVP5150AM1 family supports -40 to +85 C automotive cabin and is the proper choice when the design has any safety-relevant path. The TVP5151PBSR should only be used where the design is consumer-tier and not safety-relevant.

🏭

Industrial Machine Vision Capture Card

For factory-automation inspection systems accepting NTSC/PAL analog output (legacy CCTV cameras and analog machine-vision sensors), the TVP5151IPBSR's 9-bit resolution and 2D/3D adaptive comb filter deliver clean Y/C separation at industrial frame rates. The -40 C to +85 C industrial temperature grade supports factory-floor thermal stress. According to TI's industrial video literature, the integrated anti-alias filter eliminates external LPF components, reducing BOM cost in high-channel-count inspection systems (8/16-channel cards). The I2C host port enables dynamic threshold tuning during inspection recipes. Drop-in compatibility with the TVP5150AM1IPBSR (same PBS package) lets the same PCB serve both industrial-machine-vision and lower-tier fleet-telematics inspection channels.

What video formats does the TVP5151IPBSR support?
The TVP5151IPBSR supports NTSC (J, M, 4.43), PAL (B, D, G, H, I, M, N, Nc), and SECAM (B, D, G, K, K1, L) analog video standards with automatic standard detection. According to the TI TVP5151 datasheet, the integrated 2D/3D adaptive comb filter and 9-bit ADC digitize composite or S-Video input into 8-bit ITU-R BT.656 4:2:2 with embedded syncs, or 8-bit 4:2:2 with discrete syncs. This makes the part drop-in compatible with virtually all downstream MPEG-2/H.264 encoders, FPGAs, and SoCs that expect BT.656 streams.
What is the power consumption of the TVP5151IPBSR?
The TVP5151IPBSR consumes 138 mW typical during active video decoding from its 1.8 V analog and 1.8 V digital supplies. According to TI documentation, the optimized architecture - including integrated anti-alias filtering and on-chip clock synthesis - is what enables the 'ultralow-power' designation. For comparison, earlier-generation parts such as the TVP5150 draw significantly more power, which is the main reason handheld media players standardized on the TVP5151. The low dissipation also simplifies thermal design in sealed enclosures.
Where can I buy the TVP5151IPBSR online?

Notas de diseño

The TVP5151IPBS1 requires two separate 1.8 V supplies - VDDA (analog) and VDD (digital) - each with its own ferrite-bead isolation from the upstream LDO. According to TI's application literature, sharing the analog and digital rails without isolation couples digital switching noise into the 9-bit ADC and degrades SNR below the 50 dB target needed for clean NTSC/PAL decoding. Use a TPS7A4701RGWR low-noise LDO (4.17 uVrms) for VDDA, and a generic 1.8 V LDO for VDD. Add 10 uF + 0.1 uF ceramic bypass on each supply pin within 5 mm of the package.

Route the analog video inputs (AIN1/AIN2) on the top layer with 75-ohm controlled impedance, surrounded by a ground pour on both sides of the trace. According to TI's PCB layout guideline, the analog and digital sections should be physically separated by a chassis-ground split, with a single-point bridge under the IC's exposed thermal pad. Place the 14.31818 MHz crystal within 5 mm of the XTAL1/XTAL2 pins, with its load capacitors grounded to the analog ground pour. Avoid routing digital YOUT[7:0] traces under the IC package to minimize coupling into the analog reference.

Three common pitfalls when designing in the TVP5151IPBS1: (1) The crystal accuracy must be 50 ppm or better - a generic 14.31818 MHz ceramic resonator drifts the color subcarrier beyond NTSC/PAL spec. (2) The I2C address is 0xBA/0xBB (8-bit) per the register map; do not confuse it with TI's other video ICs at 0xB8/0xB0. (3) The reset pin is active low with a minimum 1 ms pulse; designs that omit this delay lock up the decoder. For automotive designs, do NOT use the TVP5151IPBS1 - choose TVP5150AM1IPBSR which has AEC-Q100 qualification.
