VNH7100ASTR Descripción general
An H-bridge motor driver is a four-switch power stage that drives a brushed DC motor bidirectionally from a single supply. The IC integrates the four power switches plus their gate drivers, charge pump, protection logic, and diagnostic feedback into one package, eliminating the discrete MOSFET bridge and allowing compact PCB designs for DC motors, fans, pumps, and small actuators in automotive systems. H-bridge drivers belong to the broader category of motor-driver ICs, sitting within the power-management semiconductor family.
Key features include very low RDS(on) high-side and low-side MOSFETs (typically in the tens of milliohm range per the VIPower M0 technology), built-in PWM current control up to 20 kHz, integrated charge pump, cross-conduction (shoot-through) protection, undervoltage/overvoltage shutdown, thermal shutdown, and a status flag output. The 16-pin SO package provides a low Rthja through the exposed thermal pad, enabling high continuous current without external heatsinking.
The VNH7100ASTR uses ST's proprietary VIPower M0 smart-power technology, which co-integrates analog control logic, charge pump, and vertical Power MOSFETs on a single silicon die. This monolithic integration minimizes parasitic inductance and provides fast, well-matched switching for PWM frequencies up to 20 kHz while protecting against load-dump transients common in 12 V / 24 V automotive buses.
Typical applications include automotive DC brushed motors for window lifts, seat adjusters, sliding doors, HVAC blowers, fuel pumps, and water/oil pumps. It is also used in industrial motion control where a robust, protected full-bridge driver is required. The wide 4 V to 28 V supply range covers both 12 V and 24 V bus systems.
When designing with the VNH7100ASTR, ensure that the PCB provides a sufficiently large copper pour under the exposed thermal pad to dissipate up to ~5 W continuous load. PWM frequency should stay within the datasheet range to prevent cross-conduction; use an RC network on the inputs to control dV/dt and EMI. Note: this part is currently NRND (Not Recommended for New Designs); for new designs consider VNH7100BASTR (successor) or equivalent cross-brand options.

Aplicaciones típicas
VNH7100ASTR es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: Automotive Power Window Lift, Automotive Seat Adjuster Motor, HVAC Blower Fan, Sliding Door and Liftgate Motor, Fuel and Water Pumps, Industrial Brushed-DC Motion Control.
Automotive Power Window Lift
The VNH7100ASTR drives the brushed-DC motor that raises and lowers an automotive window. Its 30 A continuous and 60 A peak rating covers the stall current of typical window-lift motors at startup, while the 4-28 V supply range directly accepts the 12 V automotive bus. The integrated H-bridge allows bidirectional motion (up/down) from a single IC, the VIPower M0 die handles 12 V load-dump transients, and the built-in thermal shutdown and overcurrent protection safeguard the motor during stall or jam events. The 16-pin SO package fits behind the door trim with a small copper pad serving as heatsink.
Recomendado
Automotive Seat Adjuster Motor
The VNH7100ASTR is well suited to drive seat-position brushed-DC motors in 12 V automotive body-control modules. With 30 A continuous output it can deliver the high torque needed for forward/back and recline adjustment, while integrated shoot-through protection prevents cross-conduction during direction reversals that could otherwise damage the switches. AEC-Q100 qualification makes it acceptable for in-cabin automotive electronics, and the small exposed-pad SO package allows the H-bridge to sit on the seat-frame PCB close to the motor, minimizing cable losses and EMC issues. PWM current control up to 20 kHz enables soft-start profiles that improve seat-motor lifetime.
Recomendado
HVAC Blower Fan
In an automotive HVAC module, the VNH7100ASTR drives the main blower fan that moves air through the heater core and A/C evaporator. Its wide 4-28 V input range tolerates cranking transients on the bus, and its high continuous current rating comfortably drives large blower fans at full speed. PWM input allows proportional fan-speed control without an additional linear regulator dissipating heat, improving HVAC efficiency. The integrated diagnostic flag output can be wired to the HVAC ECU for fault reporting on CAN/LIN, and the VIPower M0 die is designed for the demanding thermal environment under-hood or in-cabin.
Recomendado
Sliding Door and Liftgate Motor
The VNH7100ASTR is used in power sliding-door and rear-liftgate modules where the brushed-DC motor must move a heavy load and reverse direction under load. Its 60 A peak rating covers stall transients when the door meets an obstruction, and the integrated current-limit and thermal shutdown implement the anti-pinch protection required for FMVSS / ECE R11 compliance. The single-IC H-bridge eliminates the need for discrete MOSFETs, gate drivers, and protective circuitry, reducing BOM count and PCB area in the door-module. The exposed thermal pad provides sufficient heatsinking for the intermittent duty cycle of door opening/closing.
Recomendado
Fuel and Water Pumps
Automotive fuel pumps, windshield washer pumps, and coolant pumps using small brushed-DC motors can be driven directly by the VNH7100ASTR. Its integrated H-bridge provides direction control for reversible coolant pumps and bidirectional washer pumps, while PWM allows variable flow control. The VIPower M0 technology is rated for the under-hood thermal environment and tolerates the voltage transients typical of inductive pump loads. The diagnostic flag signals fault conditions (overcurrent, thermal shutdown) to the engine or body ECU, supporting OBD-II fault logging.

Industrial Brushed-DC Motion Control
Outside of automotive, the VNH7100ASTR is also used in industrial motion control for small brushed-DC gear-motors, conveyor diverters, and valve actuators. The 4-28 V supply range covers 24 V industrial bus rails, the 30 A continuous current can drive medium-sized gear-motors, and the integrated protections (thermal shutdown, overcurrent, cross-conduction prevention) reduce the protection circuitry the designer must add externally. PWM up to 20 kHz enables proportional speed and torque control without an external chopper circuit. The 16-pin SO power package is compatible with reflow assembly for SMT production.

Notas de diseño
Estimated: at 12 V supply, 30 A continuous output into a brushed-DC load at full duty, conduction loss in the H-bridge is roughly P = I^2 * (RDS(on)_HS + RDS(on)_LS) = 30^2 * (RDS(on) total). At RDS(on) of ~10 milliohm total, P is ~9 W continuous, requiring the exposed thermal pad to be soldered to at least 2-3 cm^2 of top-side copper with thermal vias to inner planes. A 4-layer PCB with continuous ground plane significantly improves thermal performance over a 2-layer board of the same footprint.
Place the VNH7100ASTR as close as possible to the motor connector to minimize the high-current loop area and reduce EMI. Use wide copper pours (>= 4 mm) for VS, GND, and OUTA/OUTB traces to handle 30 A continuous without excessive voltage drop. Decouple the VS pin with a 100 nF ceramic + 100 uF electrolytic bulk capacitor placed within 5 mm of the IC pins. The exposed thermal pad MUST be soldered to a copper pour, not left floating - this is both the main heatsinking path and the electrical ground connection.
Do not exceed 28 V on VS during normal operation; load-dump transients up to 40 V on the 12 V automotive bus require an external TVS clamp to keep VS within the absolute maximum. Avoid switching the direction inputs simultaneously without a dead-time delay - the IC has internal cross-conduction protection but external logic should still include a few microseconds of dead-time between direction changes. Do not exceed the PWM frequency of 20 kHz - higher frequencies cause the charge pump to underperform and may trigger UVLO.
Keep the logic input traces (INa, INb, PWM, DIAG, CS) physically separated from the power traces (VS, OUTA, OUTB) to avoid capacitive coupling of switching noise into the control logic. Route the current-sense (CS) trace as a Kelvin connection directly to the sense pin to avoid parasitic voltage drops that corrupt the current reading. A small RC filter (1 kohm + 100 pF) on each logic input can slow dV/dt and reduce EMI emissions on the cable harness.
