653 Présentation
A banana plug test jack, also called a banana jack or test jack, is a single-contact receptacle used to provide a convenient, reusable, non-permanent electrical connection point on a printed circuit board or chassis. It sits in the broader family of test points and PCB interconnect accessories (sub-category: connectors > board-to-board interconnects), and is engineered to accept banana-style plugs, oscilloscope probes, multimeter leads, and pin probes. The Keystone 653 is widely adopted as a programming header pin, debug access point, or ground reference in lab and production test fixtures.
Key features include a current rating of 5 A, a contact resistance of 10 mOhm or less, and a dielectric withstand voltage of 2100 V DC per the Keystone datasheet. The body is insulated with a color-coded polycarbonate sleeve (standard color options include red and black), and the internal contact is beryllium-copper with gold or tin plating for low contact resistance and high-cycle life. The 653 accepts mating pins and banana plugs of 0.080 in (2.03 mm) diameter.
The Keystone 653 is built around a single-piece stamped contact and molded insulator geometry, providing repeatable insertion force and reliable mating over thousands of cycles. The thru-hole termination accepts a standard 0.116 in (2.95 mm) PCB hole and is wave-solder compatible, making the part suitable for both hand-prototyping and high-volume SMT-adjacent production lines where test points are added post-reflow.
Typical applications include oscilloscope probe ground posts on evaluation boards, programming/debug access headers on microcontroller boards, signal injection and measurement points on RF prototype boards, ATE fixture contact points, and educational lab trainers where students need to probe the circuit without soldering.
When designing with the Keystone 653, observe the recommended PCB hole diameter and keep-out clearance around the body so the banana plug can fully engage without mechanical interference. Color-coding (red = positive, black = ground) reduces user error in production test fixtures. The Keystone 653 is not designed for permanent connection - repeated mating cycles and axial pull forces will eventually wear the contact.

Applications typiques
653 convient pour 6 applications: Oscilloscope Probe Ground Post, Microcontroller Programming/Debug Header, RF Prototype Signal Injection Point, ATE Fixture Contact Point, Educational Lab Trainer Probe Point, Battery/Charger Monitor Access.
Oscilloscope Probe Ground Post
The Keystone 653 is widely used as a dedicated ground post on evaluation boards, allowing engineers to clip oscilloscope ground leads without using a generic alligator clip. The 5 A rating easily handles ground return currents for low-impedance analog probing, while the 10 mOhm contact resistance preserves measurement fidelity at high bandwidths. The thru-hole 0.116 in footprint mates with standard oscilloscope ground clips, and the polycarbonate insulator survives repeated mating. Compared to spring-pin test points, the 653 provides a more durable receptacle that holds up under thousands of probe insertion cycles during bench characterization.
Recommandé
Microcontroller Programming/Debug Header
Designers use Keystone 653 jacks as low-cost programming/debug access points on MCU development boards where Tag-Connect or header pins are not desired. The 653's 5 A current rating and gold-plated beryllium-copper contact provide a reliable low-resistance path for SWD, JTAG, or UART signals during firmware flashing. The thru-hole footprint is wave-solder compatible and survives multiple board revisions. Compared to a header pin, the 653 occupies less board area and gives a cleaner factory-finished look. The standard 0.080 in pin acceptance accommodates 0.025 in square programming pins via spring contact.
Recommandé
RF Prototype Signal Injection Point
For RF prototype boards, the Keystone 653 serves as a test injection point for network analyzer probing or external signal generator connections. The 2100 V DC dielectric withstand provides ample margin for low-voltage RF signals, while the polycarbonate insulator introduces minimal parasitic capacitance in the sub-nH range at low MHz frequencies. Engineers value the 653 for repeatable low-loss probing of LC tank circuits, antenna feed networks, and impedance-matching stages where stray capacitance from test clips would detune the network.
Recommandé
ATE Fixture Contact Point
Production Automated Test Equipment (ATE) fixtures use Keystone 653 jacks to provide durable, repeatable contact points on bed-of-nails and flying-probe testers. The 5 A rating handles typical low-voltage DC and audio test signals, while the gold-plated beryllium-copper contact ensures low and stable contact resistance over thousands of mating cycles. Compared to pogo pins, the 653 is significantly cheaper and tolerates axial misalignment better, making it ideal for low-cost test fixtures in consumer electronics production.
Recommandé
Educational Lab Trainer Probe Point
University and vocational electronics labs use Keystone 653 jacks on training boards so students can probe circuits with standard banana-plug leads and oscilloscope probes without soldering. The polycarbonate insulator prevents accidental shorts on dense student-built circuits, and the 0.080 in pin acceptance also accommodates standard oscilloscope probe hooks. Color-coded red and black variants allow instructors to label positive supply and ground reference unambiguously, reducing wiring errors during lab exercises.
Recommandé
Battery/Charger Monitor Access
Battery management and charger evaluation boards use Keystone 653 jacks as monitor access points for voltage and current sense lines, allowing engineers to connect DMMs, electronic loads, or data loggers during characterization. The 5 A rating easily handles sense-line currents, and the thru-hole mounting survives repeated thermal cycling of battery testing. The polycarbonate insulator provides adequate dielectric at typical battery voltages up to 50 V, while the gold contact option prevents oxidation in low-voltage sense circuits.

Notes de conception
Use a 0.116 in (2.95 mm) finished hole diameter for the Keystone 653. Drill bit size is typically #32 or 2.95 mm. Maintain at least 0.060 in of copper annular ring around the hole to ensure reliable wave-solder joint formation. Keep the board keep-out clearance around the 653 body to at least 0.180 in diameter so a banana plug can fully engage without mechanical interference with adjacent components.
When placing multiple Keystone 653 test points, allow at least 0.100 in center-to-center spacing to accommodate standard banana plug bodies (4 mm outer diameter with insulation). Tighter spacing may prevent simultaneous mating of adjacent plugs. Group red (positive/signal) and black (ground) jacks in clearly labeled clusters to reduce user wiring errors during bench testing.
Do not mask the top of the Keystone 653 during wave solder - solder wicking into the mating cavity will prevent banana plug insertion and require manual rework. Use a selective wave-solder nozzle or hand-solder the 653 after wave solder if masking is impractical. Also avoid using the 653 as a permanent power connector; it is designed for intermittent test access, not continuous load.
For RF or high-impedance analog probing, keep trace length from the Keystone 653 contact to the circuit node as short as possible. The polycarbonate insulator adds approximately 0.5-1 pF parasitic capacitance, which can detune high-frequency RF networks above 100 MHz. Use the 653 primarily for low-frequency analog, DC, and digital test signals where this parasitic is negligible.
