AT90CAN64-16AU - 8-Bit AVR CAN MCU, 16MHz, 64KB Flash | Microchip Technology
Référence : AT90CAN64-16AU ✓ ActifAT90CAN64-16AU Présentation
An 8-bit microcontroller is a compact processing core, memory set and peripheral block built on a single CMOS die, positioned below 32-bit processors in raw arithmetic power but far above them in simplicity, deterministic interrupt latency and low power consumption. The CAN (Controller Area Network) protocol is a multi-master, message-based bus standard originally developed for vehicle networks; it allows many nodes to share two wires using arbitration by identifier, so a CAN-equipped MCU can talk to sensors, actuators and gateways without a separate bus controller chip.
Key features of the AT90CAN64-16AU include 16 MHz maximum clock speed with most instructions executed in a single clock cycle, an on-chip CAN controller compliant with both CAN 2.0A and CAN 2.0B, four flexible timer/counters with compare and PWM modes, two USARTs, an SPI interface, a real-time counter and a 10-bit ADC with 8 multiplexed channels. Read-while-write capable flash allows firmware to be updated in circuit through the ISP interface.
Internally, the device follows the AVR enhanced RISC architecture with 32 general-purpose working registers and an instruction set of 133 powerful instructions, most executing in one cycle. The result is throughput approaching 1 MIPS per MHz, which lets a design keep a CAN node responsive while handling protocol stacks and diagnostics. Separate 64 KB flash, 4 KB EEPROM and 4 KB SRAM regions allow calibration and configuration data to be stored independently of application code.
Typical applications include industrial CAN-to-serial and CAN-to-Ethernet gateways, automotive body and comfort modules, elevator and building automation controllers, instrumentation clusters, battery management and charger controllers, and motor drive supervisory logic where a deterministic field bus is required and a 32-bit processor would be over-specified.
When designing around this device, budget the 4.5 V to 5.5 V supply window carefully and remember that the CAN transceiver is external: the MCU drives TXD and receives RXD, while bus protection, galvanic isolation and termination are handled by a separate CAN transceiver such as the SN65HVD37D. Confirm the pin-multiplexing of the 53 I/O lines in the pin-description table of the manufacturer datasheet before assigning board functions.
This page consolidates the manufacturer specifications, package and pin resources, drop-in replacement options from the same AT90CAN32/64/128 family, and practical design notes on CAN bus layout, decoupling and firmware strategy into a single engineering reference.

Applications typiques
AT90CAN64-16AU convient pour 6 applications: Industrial CAN-to-Serial Gateway, Automotive Body and Comfort Control Module, Building Automation and Elevator Controller, Battery Charger and Power Management Controller, Instrumentation and Test Equipment Front Panel, IoT Edge Node with CAN Sensor Backbone.
Industrial CAN-to-Serial Gateway
The AT90CAN64-16AU suits gateway nodes that translate between a CAN 2.0 network and a serial host interface. Its integrated CAN 2.0A/2.0B controller handles framing, arbitration and filtering on-chip, while the 4 KB SRAM and 64 KB flash leave adequate room for a protocol stack, a diagnostics log and an OTA bootloader. The two USARTs support a local console and a host link simultaneously, and the SPI interface can add an external flash for buffered logging. Unlike a 32-bit CAN host, the 16 MHz AVR core keeps the design simple and power-efficient, and the 4.5 V to 5.5 V rail matches industrial 24 V systems after a front-end regulator step-down.

Automotive Body and Comfort Control Module
Body and comfort modules in vehicles are a classic fit for the AT90CAN64-16AU because the device combines a CAN controller with enough I/O to supervise doors, windows, lighting and climate actuators over LIN or discrete inputs. The 53 general-purpose I/O lines allow several switch inputs and indicator outputs to be handled by one controller, and the four timer/counters with PWM support window lifters and lighting fade functions. The 16 MHz clock and 4 KB EEPROM suit debounce counters and configuration retention, while the wide operating supply of 4.5 V to 5.5 V maps cleanly onto a regulated vehicle rail. For safety-critical domains requiring AEC-Q100 qualification, an automotive-grade device from the same supplier should be specified instead.

Building Automation and Elevator Controller
Elevator and building-automation panels need a controller that can sit on a 2-wire CAN bus indefinitely with minimal attention. The AT90CAN64-16AU provides an integrated CAN controller, hardware filters and message buffers that let the node respond without loading the CPU, and the 64 KB flash accommodates a protocol stack plus application logic and diagnostics. Its 10-bit ADC with 8 multiplexed channels handles analog sensor inputs such as position potentiometers and temperature probes, while the timer/counter PWM outputs drive door-zone indicators. Because the MCU consumes little power in idle modes and runs from a simple 5 V regulated rail, it fits 24 V panel backplanes with a single regulator.

Battery Charger and Power Management Controller
In charger, power-distribution and battery-management subsystems, the AT90CAN64-16AU works well as the supervisory controller that talks to a master over CAN and enforces current and voltage limits. Its four timer/counters generate the PWM needed to steer a switching converter or a MOSFET input, the ADC provides fast feedback on output voltage and current, and the 4 KB EEPROM retains calibration and charge-profile data across power cycles. The 4.5 V to 5.5 V supply range fits the control-side rail of a 48 V or 400 V system after isolated bias conversion. Deterministic single-cycle instruction execution keeps the control loop jitter low, which matters when the loop is closed inside the firmware.

Instrumentation and Test Equipment Front Panel
Laboratory and test instruments often need a front-panel controller that manages a CAN instrument bus while exposing user controls. The AT90CAN64-16AU can run the CAN command interpreter and a display/keypad state machine in parallel, using the 53 I/O lines for encoder inputs, relay drives and indicator LEDs. Its 10-bit ADC is adequate for slow analog monitoring such as temperature or supply rails, and the 4 KB EEPROM holds calibration tables and instrument configuration. The 64 KB flash is comfortable for a bootloader plus application, and the read-while-write flash capability supports field upgrades in the field via the ISP interface without removing the instrument from service.
Recommandé
IoT Edge Node with CAN Sensor Backbone
Sensor-dense installations that still rely on a CAN backbone can use the AT90CAN64-16AU as a compact edge node that aggregates measurements and forwards them upstream. The CAN controller filters incoming frames in hardware so only relevant identifiers interrupt the core, and the 4 KB SRAM supports buffering when the upstream link is busy. The SPI interface can attach a wireless module, while the two USARTs handle an external modem or a local service port, and the ADC covers simple analogue sensing directly on the node. The 5 V-only supply requirement is easily met from a buck converter on a 24 V or 12 V industrial installation, keeping the node cost and power draw low.

Notes de conception
The CAN controller is on-chip, but the bus itself is not. Place the external transceiver close to the MCU pins for TXD and RXD, keep that stub short, and route the CANH/CANL pair as a tightly coupled differential pair over a continuous ground plane with no stubs. Terminate both ends of the bus with 120 ohm resistors only, and avoid placing test points or connector pins that create unterminated stubs, since reflections on a 1 Mbit/s CAN bus are a common cause of intermittent error frames.
This is a 4.5 V to 5.5 V-only part, so budget the rail carefully. Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor at each supply pin and a bulk capacitor (4.7 uF to 10 uF) close to the package, with the shortest possible ground return. In 24 V industrial systems step the bus down to a regulated 5 V before the MCU; do not rely on the I/O clamp structure to absorb supply transients, because over-voltage on the supply pin can damage the flash programming logic.
Many of the 53 I/O pins are multiplexed with ADC inputs, timer compare outputs, USART functions and the parallel programming interface. Because of that multiplexing, two functions usually cannot be used on the same pin simultaneously; verify the pin-multiplexing matrix in the manufacturer pin description table before finalizing the schematic. If a design needs ISP programming in-circuit, ensure the programming interface pins are accessible either through a test pad or a header and are not permanently tied to conflicting levels.
Read-while-write flash support lets the firmware run from flash while new bytes are programmed, but the software must respect the documented restrictions on writing to the page containing the executing code. A common field failure is an interrupted update leaving a bootloader that no longer matches the application. Use the 4 KB EEPROM for configuration and a stored application version marker so the device can recover into a safe bootloader state after an aborted flash write.
