ATMEGA8535-16PU Présentation

The Microchip Technology ATMEGA8535-16PU is a high-performance, low-power 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller with 16 MHz maximum clock frequency, 8 KB In-System Programmable Flash memory, and an 8-channel 10-bit ADC, housed in a 40-pin PDIP (0.600 inch, 15.24 mm) through-hole package. It operates from 4.5 V to 5.5 V and delivers up to 16 MIPS throughput at 16 MHz.

A microcontroller unit (MCU) is a complete computing system on a single chip, combining a processor core, program memory, data memory, and peripherals. The ATmega8535 belongs to the AVR 8-bit MCU family (MCU -> 8-bit MCU -> AVR ATmega -> Microchip AVR), which uses an advanced RISC architecture with 130 powerful instructions, most of which execute in a single clock cycle, plus 32 general-purpose working registers directly connected to the ALU.

Key features include 8 KB self-programmable Flash with read-while-write support, 512 B EEPROM for non-volatile data storage, 512 B SRAM, and 32 general-purpose I/O lines. Peripheral integration is strong for its class: a serial programmable USART, SPI serial interface, three flexible Timer/Counters with compare and PWM modes, an 8-channel 10-bit ADC, programmable Watchdog Timer with on-chip oscillator, and an internal analog comparator.

Technically, the AVR Harvard architecture separates program and data buses, allowing simultaneous instruction fetch and execution. In-System Programming (ISP) via the SPI port and In-Application self-programming via the boot section eliminate dedicated programming cycles in production and allow firmware field updates. The ATmega8535 is also pin compatible with AT90S8535 and ATmega8515, easing migration on existing PCBs.

Typical applications include industrial automation and control, embedded systems, consumer electronics, motor control using PWM timer outputs, and sensor acquisition systems leveraging the 10-bit ADC.

A key design consideration: the 16 MHz rating applies only at 4.5 V to 5.5 V; at lower voltages the maximum safe frequency drops, so match supply rails and fuses carefully.

Applications typiques

ATMEGA8535-16PU convient pour 6 applications: Industrial Automation and Control, Sensor Acquisition and Data Logging, Legacy AT90S8535 PCB Migration, Educational and Hobbyist Embedded Systems, Motor Control and PWM Systems, Consumer Electronics Embedded Control.

🏭

Industrial Automation and Control

The ATMEGA8535-16PU fits industrial control nodes that combine digital sequencing with analog monitoring: its 16 MHz AVR core delivers 16 MIPS for deterministic control loops, 32 GPIO lines drive relays, contactors, and indicator banks directly, and the 8-channel 10-bit ADC samples 0-5 V process signals such as pressure, level, and temperature from external transducers. The three timers with compare outputs generate PWM for heater or pump control, while the USART links to SCADA gateways. The 512 B EEPROM stores calibration constants and setpoints across power cycles. Because the 5 V rail matches legacy industrial I/O standards, level shifting is eliminated, and the watchdog timer guarantees recovery from transient faults in unattended equipment.

🧩

Sensor Acquisition and Data Logging

For multi-channel sensor acquisition, the ATmega8535's 8-channel 10-bit ADC with AVCC and AREF reference pins (pins 30 and 32 on PORTA, ADC0-ADC7) digitizes up to eight analog sensors with a resolution of approximately 4.9 mV per LSB on a 5 V reference. The USART streams readings to a host PC or GSM module, and the SPI port interfaces external EEPROM or SD-card media for local logging beyond the on-chip 512 B EEPROM. Timer-driven ADC triggering produces jitter-free sampling intervals. The part suits environmental monitoring, battery-stack probes, and portable instrumentation where the PDIP package allows quick socketed prototyping and field module replacement without reflow equipment.

🔧

Legacy AT90S8535 PCB Migration

The ATmega8535 was designed explicitly as the successor to the AT90S8535: Microchip documents that it is pin compatible and can replace AT90S8535 on existing printed circuit boards, enabling drop-in repair of discontinued-stock systems. The S8535C fuse programs compatibility behavior, though fuse-bit locations and electrical characteristics differ and must be re-verified per the datasheet. Engineers maintaining servo controllers, test fixtures, or consumer products built around AT90S8535 can use ATMEGA8535-16PU in the same 40-PDIP socket, reflash the application with minor timing adjustments, and restore full functionality while gaining ISP programming and self-programming boot capability absent from the original part.

📱

Educational and Hobbyist Embedded Systems

The 40-PDIP through-hole package makes ATMEGA8535-16PU ideal for education: it solders to single- or double-sided prototype boards, inserts into ZIF sockets for repeated reuse, and tolerates hand rework by beginners. The AVR architecture - 130 mostly single-cycle instructions and 32 working registers - is widely taught in university microcontroller courses, and the open-source AVR-GCC toolchain plus the MightyCore Arduino hardware package support ATmega8535 directly, enabling Arduino-IDE development. The 8-channel ADC, PWM timers, USART, and SPI expose all classic embedded concepts (analog input, motor control, serial communication) on one 5 V-tolerant chip, and its roughly $3 unit price keeps course kit budgets low.

⚙️

Motor Control and PWM Systems

The ATmega8535 provides four PWM-capable compare outputs: OC0 on pin PB3, OC1A on PD5, OC1B on PD4, and OC2 on PD7, driven by three timers with phase-correct and fast PWM modes. This enables dual-motor H-bridge control with independent speed channels at up to 16 MHz timer resolution for fine duty-cycle control. The external interrupt pins INT0/INT1/INT2 (PD2, PD3, PB2) capture quadrature encoder feedback, while the analog comparator supports zero-cross detection for brushless commutation. The 10-bit ADC samples motor current shunts for overload protection. Designs should route MOSFET gate drivers close to the PWM pins and validate the 5 V logic thresholds against the chosen driver ICs.

💡

Consumer Electronics Embedded Control

Cost-sensitive consumer products such as small appliances, toys, remote controls, and lighting controllers benefit from the ATmega8535's integration: one chip replaces discrete logic, timers, and an external ADC, reducing BOM count and assembly cost. The internal RC oscillator option eliminates the external crystal in timing-tolerant products, and the power-down sleep mode with watchdog wake-up keeps standby current low for battery-powered devices. The 5 V operation aligns with USB and legacy wall-adapter supplies. The PDIP package suits low-volume or hand-assembled production runs, while the TQFP ATMEGA8535-16AU variant scales the same firmware to automated SMT assembly when volumes grow.

They are not footprint interchangeable, so select based on assembly process. Source: Microchip ordering information.
When should I choose ATMEGA8535-16PU over ATMEGA8515-16PU?
Choose ATMEGA8535-16PU whenever your design uses analog signals, since it integrates an 8-channel 10-bit ADC and an analog comparator while ATMEGA8515-16PU has no ADC. Both share the same 40-PDIP footprint and pinout, so board layouts are interchangeable. If your application is purely digital - timers, USART, SPI, external memory interface - the ATmega8515 is functionally adequate and may be lower cost. For mixed-signal sensor work, the 8535 avoids an external ADC entirely.
Is ATMEGA8535-16PU suitable for industrial motor control applications?
Yes, with constraints. The ATMEGA8535-16PU provides three timers with PWM compare outputs (OC0, OC1A, OC1B, OC2) suitable for motor PWM generation at 16 MHz, plus an 8-channel 10-bit ADC for current and position feedback sampling. However, the commercial temperature rating (0C to +70C for the P suffix) limits use to benign industrial environments; the industrial-grade ATMEGA8535-16PI rated -40C to +85C is the correct choice for harsh factory-floor conditions.
What is the best Microchip ATmega8535 equivalent for low-voltage designs?
For 3.3 V or 2.7 V systems, the ATmega8535L family member is the correct equivalent: the L speed-grade parts operate at reduced voltage with correspondingly lower maximum clock frequency per the voltage-frequency curve in the datasheet. The -16PU 16 MHz part is strictly a 4.5 V to 5.5 V device. Alternatively, newer ATmega AVR generations (ATmega164/324 series) offer wide-voltage operation and larger memory, though pinout verification against your PCB is required before migration.
Is ATMEGA8535-16PU still in production and supported?
Yes, the ATMEGA8535-16PU is an active lifecycle product. Datasheet sources list its life cycle stage as ACTIVE, DigiKey shows buy-now stock shipping today, and LCSC lists it in stock as of 2026-09-19. Microchip maintains the device page and datasheet on microchip.com, and open-source toolchains such as AVR-GCC and the MightyCore Arduino package continue to support ATmega8535, ensuring long-term development support.

Données de référence d'ingénierie pour ATMEGA8535-16PU — comparaison, recommandations de conception et informations de conformité.

Guide de sélection

Choose ATMEGA8535-16PU when your design needs on-chip analog acquisition (8-channel 10-bit ADC), 5 V through-hole prototyping, or a direct AT90S8535 PCB repair - its pin compatibility with the AT90S8535/ATmega8515 family makes it the safest migration path for existing 40-PDIP boards. Choose ATMEGA8535-16PI instead for environments below 0C or above +70C (industrial rating -40C to +85C, identical die). Choose ATMEGA8515-16PU only for purely digital designs where the missing ADC is acceptable. Choose ATMEGA16A-PU or ATMEGA32A-PU when your code outgrows 8 KB Flash but you must keep the same footprint. Choose ATMEGA8535-16AU for automated surface-mount assembly. All listed parts share the same AVR toolchain (AVR-GCC, MightyCore), minimizing software rework across the family.

Principaux différenciateurs

  • Integrated 8-channel 10-bit ADC (vs ATMEGA8515-16PU)
  • Identical die and pinout in industrial temperature grade (vs ATMEGA8535-16PI)
  • Lower Flash may increase firmware pressure (vs ATMEGA16A-PU)

Notes de conception

Supply the ADC separately through AVCC (pin 30): connect AVCC to VCC through a low-pass filter such as a 10 uH inductor or 100-ohm resistor with 100 nF to GND, and decouple AREF (pin 32) with a 100 nF capacitor when using the internal reference. Noisy digital ground currents flowing into the analog section are the most common cause of ADC noise floor degradation on this device. Per the Microchip ATmega8535 datasheet, ADC accuracy is only guaranteed when AVCC stays within 0.3 V of VCC.

Fuse settings, not code, cause most ATmega8535 bring-up failures. The clock source fuses (CKSEL bits) must match your hardware: an external 16 MHz crystal requires CKSEL programmed for the correct crystal range plus appropriate SUT start-up fuses. Programmers that flash code but leave CKSEL defaults will run the part on the wrong oscillator and appear dead. Additionally, when migrating from AT90S8535, remember fuse-bit locations differ between the two devices even though the PCB footprint is identical.

For the PDIP package, place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor within a few millimeters of pin 10 (VCC) to pin 11 (GND), and add a 10 uF bulk capacitor per board section. Keep the SPI programming header (MOSI, MISO, SCK, RESET on PB5-PB7 and pin 9) short and routed away from PWM traces on PD4/PD5/PD7, since in-circuit programming occurs while those outputs toggle. The 2.54 mm PDIP lead pitch makes hand prototyping straightforward, but insert a socket rather than soldering the MCU directly for firmware iterations.
