ATSAMA5D2C-XULT Présentation
An ARM Cortex-A5 MPU is a 32-bit application-class processor core from the Arm Cortex-A family, designed to run a rich operating system such as Linux while still meeting the power and real-time constraints typical of embedded products. The SAMA5D2 MPU sits in the MPU tier of the system hierarchy, between Cortex-M microcontrollers and high-end Cortex-A application processors, and is widely deployed in industrial HMI, gateway, and connected-device applications. The Xplained Ultra kit is the reference design and evaluation vehicle for that silicon, allowing engineers to validate peripherals, boot media, and software stacks before committing to a custom PCB.
Key features include the ATSAMA5D2C MPU itself running up to 500 MHz, 1 Gbit (128 MB) of on-board DDR2 SDRAM, 256 Mbit (32 MB) of QSPI flash, a 10/100 Mbit Ethernet PHY with RJ45 connector, two USB 2.0 High-Speed host/device ports, one microSD secure digital card slot, a 4.3-inch parallel LCD interface, audio codec line in/out, two CAN-FD interfaces, and on-board debugging via the embedded J-Link OB. The board accepts power from the DEBUG USB port or from an external 5 V supply through the barrel jack.
Typical applications include Linux-based industrial HMI prototypes, IoT edge gateways, secure connected-device designs leveraging SAMA5D2's secure boot and crypto accelerators, point-of-sale and medical user-interface development, and home/building automation. The included SAMA5D2 Linux distribution and Atmel Studio / MPLAB X IDE integration shorten bring-up.
When designing with this kit, use the schematics in the SAMA5D2C-XULT User's Guide as the reference layout for any custom carrier board. Pay particular attention to DDR2 signal integrity, the QSPI flash boot configuration, and the secure-boot eFuse settings when moving from prototype to production.

IoT Edge Gateway Development
For IoT edge gateways the ATSAMA5D2C-XULT offers simultaneous 10/100 Ethernet, two USB 2.0 High-Speed ports, two CAN-FD interfaces, and the SAMA5D2's hardware crypto accelerators and secure boot. Engineers can run a Linux userspace gateway stack (Mosquitto, Node-RED, AWS IoT Greengrass) on top of the BSP and validate field protocols - MQTT, CoAP, OPC-UA - before hardware freeze. The Click header ecosystem enables quick add-on of LoRa, NB-IoT, BLE and Wi-Fi modules. Compared with a Raspberry Pi class SBC the ATSAMA5D2C-XULT provides an industrial temperature grade and the same Cortex-A5 silicon that ships in production gateways.
Recommandé
Secure Connected Device Reference Design
The ATSAMA5D2C-XULT showcases the SAMA5D2 family secure-boot and tamper-detection features through its on-board QSPI boot media and eFuse configuration tools. Designers building payment terminals, smart locks or medical devices can validate secure firmware update, encrypted storage and ARM TrustZone partitioning directly on the kit. The hardware AES/SHA crypto block accelerates TLS handshakes by an order of magnitude vs Cortex-M software implementations, while Linux provides the rich middleware ecosystem. Drop-in companion ATSAMA5D28B-CNR adds further security features for production designs.
Recommandé
Point-of-Sale Terminal Prototyping
For point-of-sale (POS) prototypes the ATSAMA5D2C-XULT provides a Cortex-A5 with hardware crypto, a parallel LCD connector for customer-facing displays, Ethernet for back-office connectivity and audio line out for prompts and beeps. The Xplained Ultra board's microSD slot accommodates a removable customer-card storage media and the on-board J-Link OB simplifies secure-boot debugging. Linux lets the developer integrate payment libraries, barcode-scanner USB stacks and thermal-printer drivers quickly. Recommended production migration path: ATSAMA5D27C-CUR, with ATSAMA5D225C-D1M-CU for designs needing larger DDR2.
Recommandé
Home and Building Automation Controller
Home and building automation controllers benefit from the ATSAMA5D2C-XULT's mix of CAN-FD (for HVAC and elevator buses), Ethernet, USB, and the Click-board ecosystem for adding Z-Wave, Zigbee, BLE or KNX shields. The Linux userspace lets the developer use Node-RED or Home Assistant as a controller while the SAMA5D2's low-power modes keep standby consumption below 1 W. Compared with discrete microcontroller designs, the kit provides multi-protocol support that would otherwise need separate gateways. Production migration: ATSAMA5D26C-CUR (lower-cost) or ATSAMA5D28C-LD2G-CUR (higher integration).
Recommandé
Automotive Telematics and CAN Gateway Prototyping
The two CAN-FD interfaces of the ATSAMA5D2C-XULT, combined with Ethernet and USB, make the kit a strong prototyping base for telematics control units (TCUs) and vehicle gateways that aggregate CAN bus data and forward it to the cloud. The SAMA5D2C silicon's Cortex-A5 core runs an AUTOSAR-class or Linux stack, while its hardware crypto secures V2X communications. Note: the ATSAMA5D2C-XULT is an evaluation kit not AEC-Q100 qualified, so designs must migrate to AEC-Q100 production silicon before vehicle deployment. Recommended production companions: ATSAMA5D27A-CU and ATSAMA5D28A-CUR.

Notes de conception
The ATSAMA5D2C-XULT evaluation board dissipates approximately 1-3 W under typical Linux workloads (500 MHz CPU + DDR2 + Ethernet). Use the board in ambient air with normal convection; no external heatsink is required for evaluation. Estimated: P_cpu ~= Vdd_core x I_core x activity_factor. At full load on the SAMA5D2C the on-board regulator and MPU package may exceed 70 C - place the board on a non-conductive surface and avoid enclosed enclosures when running stress tests.
Power the kit from the DEBUG USB micro-B port (5 V from a USB 2.0 host or charger) or the barrel jack (5 V DC). The on-board regulators derive 3V3, 1V8, and DDR2 rails. If you attach power-hungry Click boards or USB devices, verify the upstream USB port can supply at least 1.5 A. Estimated: I_5V ~= I_3V3 + I_DDR2 + I_1V8 + I_1V2; total system draw can reach ~1 A under Ethernet + USB + LCD load.
When migrating from the ATSAMA5D2C-XULT to a custom carrier board, copy the DDR2 routing topology (controlled-impedance, matched length, reference planes) verbatim from the User's Guide 50002691E schematics. The QSPI flash routing must be length-matched within 50 mil to avoid boot-time timing violations. Add a JTAG header even though the J-Link OB is present - production designs typically need external debug access for factory programming.
Place decoupling capacitors as close as possible to every SAMA5D2C power pin (1uF + 100nF per pin). Keep the 50 MHz RMII traces between the MPU and the Ethernet PHY length-matched within 50 mil. The CAN-FD transceiver output traces must be routed with 120 ohm characteristic impedance and terminated at the far end. Route the parallel LCD data/clock traces as a matched bus with length matching within 100 mil.
Do not attempt to power the ATSAMA5D2C-XULT from the TARGET USB port - the kit does not enumerate as a USB device on that port. Always use the DEBUG USB port for both power and data. The microSD card slot is shared with the QSPI boot media; ensure the BOOT_DIS strap is configured correctly or the MPU will boot from QSPI instead of microSD. The kit is Obsolete per Octopart - verify long-term availability with Microchip before basing a production line on this kit.
