ATSAMD20G14B-AUT Présentation
A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, memory (Flash for code, SRAM for data), and programmable peripherals into one package. The ARM Cortex-M0+ is the most energy-efficient core in the ARM-M family, designed for deterministic real-time embedded control with the smallest silicon area and lowest active power per MHz. The SAM D20 series positions Cortex-M0+ above 8-bit/16-bit legacy architectures by offering 32-bit performance, modern peripherals, and industry-standard toolchains while preserving ultra-low-power behaviour.
Key features of the ATSAMD20G14B-AUT include up to 14 SERCOM (serial communication) interfaces that can be mapped to UART, SPI, I2C, or LIN, a 12-bit ADC with up to 14 channels, a 10-bit DAC, a 256-channel Peripheral Touch Controller (PTC), a Real-Time Clock (RTC) with calendar mode, and the standard Microchip SleepWalking peripheral-event system. The device operates from a 1.62V to 3.63V supply, supporting both 1.5V and 3.3V system rails. The 48-pin TQFP footprint is pin-compatible with the larger-memory siblings ATSAMD20G15B-AUT (32 KB Flash) and ATSAMD20G16B-AUT (64 KB Flash), enabling in-family scaling without PCB rework.
The ATSAMD20G14B-AUT is well suited to sensor nodes, capacitive-touch user interfaces, smart meters, white goods, HVAC controllers, and low-power wireless companion MCUs. The industrial temperature grade and the rich peripheral mix allow a single part to drive a touch panel, communicate with a sensor or radio, and run the application loop while drawing minimal idle current.
Designers should plan for an external 32.768 kHz crystal if RTC accuracy is required, and ensure decoupling follows the datasheet reference layout. The free Atmel Studio / MPLAB X toolchain, ASF / Harmony drivers, and SEGGER J-Link support shorten firmware development cycles.

Applications typiques
ATSAMD20G14B-AUT convient pour 6 applications: Home Automation Hubs, Capacitive Touch User Interfaces, Smart Metering Endpoints, Industrial Sensor Nodes, HVAC Zone Controllers, Low-Power Wearable Companions.
Home Automation Hubs
The ATSAMD20G14B-AUT fits home automation hubs because its ARM Cortex-M0+ core running at 48 MHz provides sufficient throughput to run Z-Wave/Zigbee/BLE controller stacks, while the up to 14 SERCOM interfaces allow simultaneous UART, SPI, and I2C connections to radios, sensors, and EEPROM. The 256-channel Peripheral Touch Controller (PTC) handles front-panel buttons or sliders without an external touch IC. At 1.62 V to 3.63 V supply, the part runs directly from a 3.3 V LDO or two-cell alkaline pack. With 16 KB Flash and 2 KB SRAM it targets lightweight gateway firmware plus protocol translation; designers can scale up to ATSAMD20G16B-AUT (64 KB) if more memory is needed without changing PCB layout.
Recommandé
Capacitive Touch User Interfaces
The integrated 256-channel Peripheral Touch Controller makes ATSAMD20G14B-AUT ideal for capacitive-touch UI panels in white goods, thermostats, and small kitchen appliances. Each PTC channel drives a sensor electrode and supports both self-capacitance and mutual-capacitance scanning, eliminating dedicated touch ICs and reducing BOM. The 12-bit ADC and 10-bit DAC allow smooth LED backlight control and slider feedback, while the 14 SERCOMs connect to LED drivers, EEPROM, and a host controller. Industrial -40C to +85C rating covers appliance interiors, and SleepWalking reduces current when the panel is idle.
Recommandé
Smart Metering Endpoints
Smart electricity, gas, and water meters need an MCU that combines low power, accurate timekeeping, and versatile I/O - all delivered by ATSAMD20G14B-AUT. The on-chip RTC with calendar mode and external 32.768 kHz crystal support enables TOU billing accuracy, while the 12-bit ADC reads current shunts, voltage dividers, and temperature sensors with sufficient precision. The industrial temperature range suits outdoor enclosures, and 16 KB Flash holds DLMS/COSEM or simple ANSI C12.18 stacks. The 48-TQFP package and 3.3 V operation match standard smart-meter reference designs.
Recommandé
Industrial Sensor Nodes
Factory-floor sensor nodes for pressure, flow, and temperature use the ATSAMD20G14B-AUT as a low-power data concentrator. The 12-bit ADC handles analog sensors directly, while SERCOM instances connect to digital IO-Link or RS-485 transceivers. The 1.62 V to 3.63 V supply enables battery or PoE-derived power. Industrial temperature grade tolerates cabinet environments, and the Cortex-M0+ at 48 MHz runs proprietary sensing algorithms or simple edge-ML inferencing on vibration data. Sleep currents under 10 uA allow multi-year battery life on periodic-report nodes.
Recommandé
HVAC Zone Controllers
In a multi-zone HVAC controller the ATSAMD20G14B-AUT drives actuators, reads thermistors through the 12-bit ADC, and talks to the central thermostat via RS-485 or CAN through a SERCOM. The 48-TQFP package provides enough GPIO for triac control and LED status, while the RTC schedules set-back temperatures. Industrial temperature range handles the plenum environment. The Microchip ecosystem (MPLAB X, Harmony, application notes for HVAC) accelerates certification cycles, and pin-compatible family members allow a single PCB to host 16 KB, 32 KB, or 64 KB Flash variants as needed.
Recommandé
Low-Power Wearable Companions
The ATSAMD20G14B-AUT can serve as a sensor-hub MCU in wearables where the main CPU is a Bluetooth SoC. It runs the 32.768 kHz RTC for accurate timekeeping, reads biometric ADCs, and forwards data over I2C to the host radio. At 1.62 V supply it operates from a coin cell, and the Cortex-M0+ SleepWalking feature wakes only the SERCOMs when an interrupt arrives, holding average current in the low uA range. The small 48-TQFP footprint (7x7 mm) and 16 KB Flash fit into wristbands and fitness patches with sufficient margin for firmware updates.

Notes de conception
Place a 1 uF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to each VDD pin and a 100 nF on VDDIO. Add a bulk 10 uF near the regulator output to handle Cortex-M0+ current spikes during DMA bursts. For battery-powered designs, route the RTC supply (VDDRTC) from the LDO backup output so the RTC keeps time in deep-sleep when the main rail collapses.
Keep the 32.768 kHz crystal traces short and symmetric, surround them with a grounded guard ring, and place load capacitors within 5 mm of the XIN32/XOUT32 pins. Route SWD signals (SWDIO/SWCLK) away from switching nodes; if the design includes a switching regulator, separate the analog and digital grounds with a single point stitch near the MCU.
Do not assume every SERCOM pin is always available - SERCOM I/O multiplexing depends on the peripheral channel selected via the I/O multiplexing register (PMUX). Verify SERCOM pad assignments against the pinout table for your package option before locking the schematic. Also, the B revision silicon differs from the A revision in peripheral errata; consult the silicon errata document if migrating existing A-revision firmware.
