ATSAML22G18A-MUT Présentation

The Microchip Technology (formerly Atmel) ATSAML22G18A-MUT is an ultra-low-power 32-bit ARM Cortex-M0+ microcontroller delivering 32MHz CPU performance with 256KB Flash and 32KB SRAM in a 48-pin VQFN-EP (7x7 mm) package. As part of the SAM L22G family, it integrates an on-chip segment LCD controller with up to 8x32 segments, making it purpose-built for battery-powered metering, wearable, and segment-LCD display applications.

What is a SAM L22 microcontroller? The SAM L22 family sits within Microchip's broader SAM lineup of 32-bit ARM Cortex microcontrollers. A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer integrating a CPU core, Flash program memory, SRAM data memory, and programmable peripherals. The L22 sub-family is differentiated by its ultra-low-power architecture, segment LCD driver, and Cortex-M0+ efficiency - aimed at deeply embedded applications that must run for years on a single coin cell. In the system hierarchy it occupies the power-management-aware edge of the IoT device spectrum: MCU -> ultra-low-power MCU -> segment LCD MCU -> SAM L22 family.

Key differentiating specifications include 39 uA/MHz active current running CoreMark, 490 nA ultra-low-power backup mode with RTC retention, integrated 16-channel 12-bit ADC, four SERCOM interfaces (configurable as I2C/SPI/UART), full-speed USB device with internal pull-up, and a segment LCD controller supporting up to 8x32 segments. The Cortex-M0+ core delivers 0.9 DMIPS/MHz with single-cycle I/O access and an MPU for memory protection.

Architecturally, the device uses a Harvard-style bus matrix with separate AHB/APB domains, SleepWalking peripherals that wake only on configured events, and event system for zero-CPU peripheral-to-peripheral signaling. The 32MHz operation is sourced from an internal 32.768kHz oscillator and PLL, eliminating external crystals in many designs. Operating voltage spans 1.6V to 3.6V across -40C to +85C industrial range.

Typical applications include battery-powered flow and gas meters, wearable health monitors with segment LCD displays, smart thermostats, electronic shelf labels, IoT sensor nodes with USB diagnostic port, and industrial HMI panels. The on-chip LCD driver eliminates the need for an external segment-driver IC.

When designing with this part, route the segment LCD pins as a dedicated bus to minimize crosstalk, place the decoupling capacitor within 2mm of VDDIN, and verify the backup domain RTC crystal load capacitance to achieve the 490 nA standby target. The page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives from the SAM L22 family, and practical design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet.

Principaux différenciateurs

  • Integrated segment LCD controller (vs ATSAML22G16A-MUT)
  • Ultra-low-power 490 nA backup mode (vs ATSAMD21G18A-MF)
  • USB device with internal pull-up (vs ATSAML10E16A-MUT)

Notes de conception

Place a 1 uF X7R ceramic decoupling capacitor within 2 mm of the VDDIN pin and a 100 nF X7R within 2 mm of VDDCORE to stabilize the internal LDO. The ATSAML22G18A-MUT's 39 uA/MHz active current means a 32 MHz loop reading sensors spends roughly 1.25 mA; switching to SleepWalking mode between readings drops average current by 30-100x. Estimated: at 1 measurement per second, average current is ~120 uA.

Route the segment LCD bus (PB00-PB17 in the SAM L22) as a tight bundle on one PCB layer with continuous ground beneath, separated from switching signals by at least 3 mm. The exposed pad of the 48-VFQFN-EP package must be soldered to a continuous ground plane with 9 thermal vias in a 3x3 grid for proper thermal dissipation. Use Microchip's MPLAB X Pin Manager to verify pin assignments because peripheral multiplexing differs between SAM L21 and SAM L22.

The USB DP/DM differential pair (PA24/PA25) must be routed with 90-ohm differential impedance and matched within 2 mm. Place the 48 MHz USB reference clock crystal within 5 mm of the XIN/XOUT pins, with load capacitors sized per crystal manufacturer CL spec minus 5 pF of stray capacitance. Failure to match impedance causes USB enumeration failures and corrupt USB packets at full-speed 12 Mbps.

Do not exceed 3.6 V on VDDIN even momentarily - the SAM L22 lacks 5 V tolerance on any I/O. Brown-out detection must be enabled in firmware to safely retain RTC and backup registers during battery swaps. Estimated: at 490 nA with a 200 mAh CR2032 cell, theoretical battery life is ~46 years but practical life is ~5 years due to self-discharge. The ATSAML22G18A-MUT must not be confused with the ATSAME70 family - they share SAM branding but are entirely different cores.
