BT136-600D,127 Présentation
A TRIAC (triode for alternating current) is a bidirectional thyristor that conducts in both halves of an AC waveform, effectively functioning as two SCRs wired in anti-parallel within a single die. It belongs to the thyristor family within discrete power semiconductors, used wherever AC mains must be switched or phase-controlled by a low-power control signal. TRIACs sit in the hierarchy: thyristor -> discrete semiconductor -> power device. The four-quadrant symmetric gating of the "D" series enables the same low gate drive to fire the device in Quadrants I, II, III, and IV, simplifying MCU-driven phase-control and zero-cross switching designs.
Key specifications include 600 V repetitive peak off-state voltage (VDRM), 4 A RMS on-state current (IT(RMS)), 25 A non-repetitive surge current (ITSM), 10 mA maximum gate trigger current (IGT), 1 V maximum gate trigger voltage (VGT), and 5 W power dissipation (PG(AV)). The TO-220AB package exposes a metal tab that doubles as the main terminal (MT2) and serves as a heatsink mounting interface. Planar passivated die construction yields stable blocking characteristics and long-term reliability under thermal cycling.
Typical applications include AC lamp dimmers (leading-edge phase control), fan and small motor speed regulators, solid-state relays, heater control, and general-purpose AC switching in white goods. Logic-level IGT allows direct drive from microcontroller GPIO pins, eliminating the need for a dedicated gate driver circuit.

Applications typiques
BT136-600D,127 convient pour 6 applications: AC Lamp Dimmer (Leading-Edge Phase Control), Fan and Small Motor Speed Controller, Solid-State Relay (SSR) Output Stage, White Goods Heater Control, General-Purpose AC Switching for Appliances, Industrial Solenoid and Contactor Driver.
AC Lamp Dimmer (Leading-Edge Phase Control)
The BT136-600D,127 drives 120/230 V AC incandescent and dimmable LED loads at up to 4 A RMS with 10 mA IGT, matching low-power microcontroller GPIO or optocoupler (MOC3041) gate drive. In a typical leading-edge dimmer, the TRIAC fires after a delay set by an RC network synchronized to the AC zero-cross, and the device's 600 V VDRM provides a 2x safety margin over 230 V mains. Unlike a mechanical potentiometer-rheostat dimmer, this TRIAC dissipates only millwatts during the dimming cycle, keeping the housing cool.
Recommandé
Fan and Small Motor Speed Controller
The BT136-600D,127 controls shaded-pole and permanent-split-capacitor AC fan motors up to 4 A by phase-angle modulation of the mains voltage. Its 4-quadrant sensitive gate accepts low-current drive from a wall-mounted speed-control circuit, and its 27 A ITSM rating handles motor inrush during start-up. The TO-220AB tab is bolted to an aluminum heatsink to dissipate the 5 W worst-case PG(AV) at full phase delay, ensuring junction temperature stays within safe limits.
Recommandé
Solid-State Relay (SSR) Output Stage
The BT136-600D serves as the switch element in PCB-mount solid-state relays rated up to 4 A at 600 V. Its logic-level 10 mA IGT enables direct drive from opto-isolated logic inputs (3.3 V or 5 V), avoiding secondary-side power supplies in the SSR. The TRIAC's zero-cross or random-fire switching topology determines whether it is used for heater (zero-cross) or motor (random-fire) SSR variants.
Recommandé
White Goods Heater Control
Washing machines, dishwashers, and electric water heaters use the BT136-600D,127 to switch resistive heater banks up to roughly 920 W at 230 V RMS. The TRIAC's planar passivated junction handles the thermal cycling of repeated on/off heater regulation, and the 10 mA IGT keeps MCU-side design simple. Heater loads are pure resistive, so no snubber is strictly required, but a 100 nF Y-cap across MT1-MT2 improves EMI signature.
Recommandé
General-Purpose AC Switching for Appliances
Coffee makers, kettles, and small kitchen appliances integrate the BT136-600D,127 to provide soft-start and on/off control of mains-rated heaters. The TO-220AB package's through-hole leads support wave-soldered assembly and accept a clip-on heatsink for higher dissipation applications. The TRIAC's 600 V rating exceeds 230 V mains by 2.5x, ensuring robust blocking margin under transient surges.
Recommandé
Industrial Solenoid and Contactor Driver
The BT136-600D,127 controls 24-230 V AC solenoids and small contactor coils in industrial automation panels. Its four-quadrant trigger permits AC or DC coil drive, and the 10 mA IGT lets a 24 V PLC output drive the gate via a resistor. The TO-220AB tab mounts to a DIN-rail enclosure heatsink for sustained duty in control cabinets.

Notes de conception
Estimated: at 4 A IT(RMS) and full 5 W PG(AV) dissipation, the TO-220AB junction-to-ambient thermal resistance of approximately 62.5 C/W yields a 312 C junction-temperature rise above ambient, which is excessive. A clip-on or bolt-on heatsink with thermal resistance below 10 C/W is required for continuous 4 A operation; without a heatsink, derate to roughly 1.5 A continuous on free air.
Place the RC snubber (100 ohm + 100 nF) within 5 mm of MT1-MT2 terminals. Keep the gate-series resistor (100-220 ohm) close to pin 3 to limit high-frequency ringing on the gate drive path. Minimize the gate-cathode loop area to improve dV/dt immunity in noisy AC-line environments such as motor control cabinets.
Do not use the BT136-600D on DC-only loads - a TRIAC cannot commutate off without an AC zero-cross, so once latched in DC operation it will stay on. For DC switching use an SCR or MOSFET. Also avoid exceeding ITSM (27 A) during transformer inrush; pre-charge capacitor banks to limit repetitive peak surge current.
