BTT6020-1ERA Présentation
A Smart High-Side Switch (also called PROFET, or Protected Smart FET) is a type of intelligent power switch used to control resistive or inductive loads from a microcontroller. Compared to a discrete MOSFET, a smart high-side switch integrates the power transistor, gate charge pump, current limiting, thermal shutdown, ESD protection, and a diagnostic feedback path into one package. It sits within the broader power-management IC hierarchy (power switch -> load driver -> PMIC -> semiconductor) and is preferred over discrete solutions for body-electronics modules because it eliminates dozens of external components and provides MCU-readable fault feedback.
Key features include a typical on-state resistance of 20 mΩ, 24 V load-dump ruggedness (per automotive transients), over-current protection, short-circuit protection with latch behavior, thermal shutdown, over-voltage clamp at the output, under-voltage lockout, reverse-battery protection on Vbb, ESD protection on IN/DEN, and a current-sense diagnostic pin with proportional load current output. The exposed pad on the PG-TDSO-14 package keeps junction temperature manageable at full 7 A load by reducing thermal resistance to roughly 35 C/W on a properly designed 2-layer FR4 board.
Typical applications include automotive body-control modules driving 24V incandescent lamps, halogen or LED exterior lighting, seat-heater and mirror-heater PWM control, DC-brush motor control, and any 24V body-electronics load where MCU-driven fault diagnostics are required. The 24V load-dump capability and AEC-Q100 qualification make it well suited for truck, bus, and off-highway vehicles, as well as 12V passenger cars with standard 12V/24V jump-start transients.
When designing with this device, place a low-ESR ceramic or electrolytic capacitor near the Vbb pin to absorb load-dump transients and meet the input-voltage stability analysis on the IN pin. The DEN diagnostic pin current must be converted to a voltage with a sense resistor scaled to the MCU ADC full scale. Always check the worst-case SOA curve (DC and 1-second pulse) at your highest inrush load to verify that cold-filament lamp turn-on stays below the safe-operating-area boundary.

Applications typiques
BTT6020-1ERA convient pour 6 applications: Automotive 24V Incandescent Lamp Driver, Automotive LED Exterior Lighting, Body Control Module Resistive Loads, 24V DC-Brush Motor Control, Truck / Bus / Off-Highway 24V Body Electronics, Industrial 24V Load Switching.
Automotive 24V Incandescent Lamp Driver
The BTT6020-1ERA is engineered to drive 5 × P21W or 1 × 70W 24V incandescent lamps in automotive body-control modules. Its 20 mΩ RDS(on) at 7 A load keeps conduction loss around 0.98 W (I²·R) at steady state, while the latch-mode short-circuit protection handles the cold-filament inrush that can exceed 10× steady-state current for the first few milliseconds. Compared to a discrete MOSFET + fuse solution, the BTT6020-1ERA integrates reverse-battery protection and over-temperature auto-restart, eliminating the fuse and PTC resettable device typically required for lamp protection.
Recommandé
Automotive LED Exterior Lighting
The BTT6020-1ERA drives 24V LED arrays with closed-loop current regulation through the DEN diagnostic pin. The current-sense output provides proportional load-current feedback that an MCU ADC reads to adjust PWM duty cycle, enabling constant-current LED brightness control across temperature and LED forward-voltage variation. The exposed-pad PG-TDSO-14 package keeps junction temperature low under continuous LED-driver operation, and AEC-Q100 qualification ensures reliable operation across -40 °C to +125 °C ambient automotive temperature ranges.
Recommandé
Body Control Module Resistive Loads
In body-control modules, the BTT6020-1ERA drives seat heaters, mirror heaters, and rear-window defrosters with the DEN pin providing real-time load-current feedback for fault detection. The 5-42 V operating range handles 12V jump-start and 24V truck-system transients without external protection, and the integrated reverse-battery protection eliminates a series Schottky diode in many designs. The device's 24V load-dump ruggedness simplifies compliance with ISO 7637 and ISO 16750 automotive transient tests on body-electronics subsystems.
Recommandé
24V DC-Brush Motor Control
The BTT6020-1ERA controls small 24V DC-brush motors in body-electronics subsystems such as mirror adjusters, washer pumps, and seat-position motors. The current-sense diagnostic on DEN provides stall-detection feedback to the MCU, while the latch-mode short-circuit protection handles motor-start inrush. The exposed-pad PG-TDSO-14 keeps thermal resistance low enough for sustained motor-on time at moderate duty cycles, and the integrated over-temperature auto-restart handles stall-induced heating gracefully.
Recommandé
Truck / Bus / Off-Highway 24V Body Electronics
The BTT6020-1ERA's 24V nominal operating range and load-dump ruggedness make it ideal for commercial-vehicle body electronics on truck, bus, agricultural, and off-highway platforms. These systems routinely see 24V jump-start, double-battery jump-start, and severe load-dump transients that exceed 12V passenger-car ratings. The exposed-pad PG-TDSO-14 footprint withstands the under-hood thermal environment while integrating all the protection required for ungrounded 24V subsystems.
Recommandé
Industrial 24V Load Switching
The BTT6020-1ERA also serves industrial 24V PLC and process-control applications where MCU-driven high-side switching with diagnostic feedback replaces discrete relay or SSR circuits. The DEN pin provides load-current feedback for predictive-maintenance algorithms, and the 5-42 V operating range covers 24V industrial bus rails with significant transient headroom. AEC-Q100 qualification provides over-temperature and ESD margin beyond commercial-grade switches for factory-floor deployments.

Notes de conception
Estimated: At 7 A continuous load and 20 mΩ RDS(on), conduction dissipation is I²·R = 49·0.02 = 0.98 W. With the PG-TDSO-14 exposed-pad package and a 35 C/W θJA on a properly designed 2-layer FR4 board with thermal vias, the junction temperature rise is approximately 0.98·35 ≈ 34 °C above ambient, well within the 150 °C Tj(max). For sustained operation at >5 A, increase PCB copper area around the exposed pad or add thermal vias to a bottom-layer copper pour to keep θJA below 30 C/W.
Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the Vbb pin (pin 2) and the GND pin (pin 3) to absorb fast load-dump and reverse-battery transients. For 24V truck systems experiencing double-battery jump-start (up to 48 V transient), place a TVS diode (e.g. 33 V SMAJ) on Vbb to GND to clamp transients above the device's internal Vbb overvoltage clamp. The exposed pad must be soldered to a copper pour with at least 4 thermal vias to the opposite PCB layer for heat extraction.
Do not exceed the absolute maximum Vbb rating of 42 V; transient overvoltage above this rating will trigger internal overvoltage clamping but sustained overvoltage can damage the bond wires. The DEN current-sense output current is typically 1/1000 of the load current; use a sense resistor selected so the maximum DEN voltage at full load does not exceed the MCU ADC reference voltage (typically 3.3 V or 5 V). Reverse-battery protection is integrated, but a series reverse-blocking diode in the Vbb line is not required and would only add conduction loss.
Keep the high-current load OUT trace (pin 1) wide and short - this trace carries the full load current and any series inductance can generate large dV/dt transients during MOSFET turn-off. Route the IN logic-level trace (pin 4) and DEN diagnostic trace (pin 11) away from the OUT and Vbb high-current traces to minimize noise coupling into the analog diagnostic signal. Place the ground return path directly under the high-current path to minimize loop inductance.
