DRV8814PWPR Présentation
A dual H-bridge motor driver is a power IC that integrates four power MOSFET switches and their control logic into one package so a microcontroller can command direction, brake, coast, and PWM-based current regulation on two DC motors (or one bipolar stepper) from a single supply rail. These devices sit in the broader hierarchy of motor control IC -> motion control -> power management, and the DRV8814 family is part of TI's brushed-DC driver portfolio distinguished by integrated current-sense and parallel interface control.
Key features of the DRV8814PWPR include four-level winding current control, multiple decay modes (slow decay, fast decay, and mixed decay), a PHASE/EN parallel interface for direction and enable, an internal inrush current limiter that protects the supply rail at startup, and built-in protection features including overcurrent protection (OCP), thermal shutdown (TSD), undervoltage lockout (UVLO), and fault-current reporting via the FLT pin. The HTSSOP-28 PowerPAD package delivers a low thermal resistance of approximately 31 °C/W (junction-to-case), enabling continuous 2.5 A operation with moderate PCB copper area. The parallel control scheme allows four discrete control inputs, simplifying host-firmware logic and reducing MCU timer overhead compared to PWM-only stepper interfaces.
The DRV8814PWPR is typically used in printers, scanners, robotic actuators, automated teller machines, textile machinery, and office automation. Its 45-V absolute-maximum supply tolerance also makes it compatible with 24-V and 36-V industrial bus rails. The DRV8841 and DRV8843 are related TI parts but use different interfaces and are not drop-in compatible.

Applications typiques
DRV8814PWPR convient pour 6 applications: Office Printer Paper Feed & Carriage Motors, Document Scanner Belt Drive, Automated Teller Machine (ATM) Card & Cash Transport, Industrial Robotic Actuator, Textile & Sewing Machine Drive, Vending Machine Dispense Motors.
Office Printer Paper Feed & Carriage Motors
The DRV8814PWPR is purpose-built for office printers where two brushed DC motors drive paper feed rollers and the print-head carriage. Its 8-45 V supply range covers the printer's main logic rail plus motor back-EMF headroom, while 2.5 A per channel powers high-inertia paper-feed rollers. Four-level winding current control and slow/fast/mixed decay settings let designers minimize audible whine and EMI. Inrush protection prevents the high startup current of carriage motors from collapsing the main rail. Parallel PHASE/EN control simplifies the printer's MCU firmware compared to stepper pulse-trains.
Recommandé
Document Scanner Belt Drive
Flatbed and sheet-fed scanners use two brushed DC motors: one for the document feed belt and one for the imaging bar carriage. The DRV8814PWPR's dual H-bridge topology drives both motors from a single 24-V rail, halving component count versus discrete drivers. The integrated fault (FLT) output signals the scanner controller on overcurrent or overtemperature events, enabling graceful shutdown to protect sensitive CCD/CIS sensors. 2.5 A continuous current handles the stall current of small geared scanner motors at start.
Recommandé
Automated Teller Machine (ATM) Card & Cash Transport
ATMs depend on brushed DC gear motors for card readers, bill acceptors, and shutter control. The DRV8814PWPR's 45-V operating tolerance and 2.5 A drive allow one IC to handle multiple ATM motor channels, reducing BOM count. Integrated inrush protection prevents card-reader motor startup transients from triggering upstream supply brown-outs, while OCP and TSD protect against jammed-card stalls. The wide -40 °C to +85 °C operating range supports ATM outdoor and unheated vestibule installations.
Recommandé
Industrial Robotic Actuator
Small industrial robotic arms and pick-and-place actuators use brushed DC gear motors for joint motion. The DRV8814PWPR delivers 2.5 A per channel for typical 12-24 V DC gear motors, with 47-V transient tolerance for back-EMF during deceleration. Four-level current control enables torque limiting via VREF, providing software-defined joint current caps for collaborative safety. The HTSSOP-28 PowerPAD package supports reflow soldering on standard 4-layer industrial PCBs with moderate copper area.
Recommandé
Textile & Sewing Machine Drive
Industrial sewing and embroidery machines use brushed DC motors for fabric feed and needle-bar positioning. The DRV8814PWPR's parallel PHASE/EN interface allows the machine controller to drive two axes from a single IC, with mixed-decay mode minimizing needle-bar overshoot at high PWM rates. 2.5 A continuous current handles the inrush of sewing-motor start, while integrated inrush protection prevents mains-side supply collapse in low-cost sewing machine power stages.
Recommandé
Vending Machine Dispense Motors
Vending machines use brushed DC gear motors for spiral coil dispensing of snacks, drinks, and tickets. The DRV8814PWPR's 2.5 A per channel drives typical 12-24 V vending dispenser motors, with OCP and TSD protecting against jammed spiral jams. The 8-45 V supply range accommodates 24-V vending bus rails with inductive transient headroom. Parallel control reduces MCU overhead, freeing the controller to manage payment, inventory, and telemetry tasks in real time.

Notes de conception
Estimated: at VM = 24 V and 2.5 A continuous per channel with both bridges active, total H-bridge loss is approximately 8-12 W depending on RDS(on) and PWM duty. The HTSSOP-28 PowerPAD has θJC of approximately 31 °C/W, requiring thermal vias under the PowerPAD and at least 1 square inch of 2-oz copper on top and bottom layers to keep Tj below 125 °C. For both bridges at 2.5 A simultaneously, derate current or use forced-air; single bridge at 2.5 A continuous is typically achievable with the standard PowerPAD footprint.
Place the VM supply bypass (10 µF ceramic + 100 µF electrolytic) as close to pins 9-10 (VM) as possible to absorb motor back-EMF. The VCP capacitor (0.1 µF, 16 V) between pin 8 (VCP) and pin 11 (GND) must be within 5 mm of the IC. The exposed PowerPAD must be soldered to a ground copper plane with a 3x3 thermal via grid (0.3 mm vias) for proper heatsinking. Keep motor output traces away from control logic traces to minimize dV/dt coupling.
Do not exceed 45 V continuous on VM; inductive transients from motor commutation can momentarily exceed this. Always provide a reverse-biased flyback path (or rely on the integrated clamping) and add a TVS or bulk cap if motor inductance is high. The FLT pin is open-drain and requires a pull-up; if not used, tie it to GND or leave NC per datasheet. Do not float any enable input (EN1/EN2, PHASE1/PHASE2); floating inputs can cause unexpected motor activation. The DECAY pin selects decay mode (slow/fast/mixed) and must be tied high, low, or driven by MCU - never left floating.
