DRV8816PWP Présentation
Background Knowledge: A 1/2-H-bridge motor driver is a power-management integrated circuit that contains two switching MOSFETs (a high-side and a low-side device) and the gate-drive logic to control them in a push-pull fashion. Two half-H bridges can be combined externally to build a full H-bridge for bidirectional DC motor or bipolar stepper winding control. The DRV8816 family belongs to the broader category of integrated motor drivers, which sit inside the power-management IC hierarchy and replace discrete MOSFET gate-drive circuits to save board area, simplify firmware, and add on-chip current limiting.
Key features include built-in shoot-through protection, integrated current-sense feedback for current control loops, undervoltage lockout (UVLO), and thermal shutdown with fault-flag indication. The device operates over a -40 C to +85 C ambient range and is offered in a thermally enhanced HTSSOP-16 (PWP) package with an exposed thermal pad that lowers theta_JA and enables continuous high-current operation with a moderate PCB copper pour. A parallel-interface architecture lets two independent outputs share logic pins without SPI overhead, which simplifies firmware and reduces controller pin count compared to multi-channel serial PMIC interface topologies.
Architecturally, the DRV8816 uses DMOS output transistors with low on-resistance, which reduces thermal losses at high peak currents. The integrated charge pump supplies the high-side gate drive, and a programmable blanking time suppresses false current-sense trips caused by diode reverse recovery. This makes the device suitable for fast-switching PWM control up to 200 kHz with predictable current-limit behavior across motor and solenoid loads.
Typical applications include brushed DC motor drivers, bipolar stepper motor winding drivers, solenoid and valve drivers, LED string drivers, and generic half-H-bridge actuator stages. Two DRV8816 channels can be wired together externally to form a single full H-bridge for one bipolar stepper motor (single-axis), or two channels can each drive an independent brushed DC motor, solenoid, or relay. The wide 8 V to 38 V supply range covers both 12 V and 24 V industrial bus rails.
When designing with the DRV8816PWP, observe the thermal limits: at 2 A per channel continuous with both channels active, dissipation can exceed 2 W and requires the exposed pad to be soldered to a copper pour of at least 1 square inch. Always respect the absolute-maximum supply of 40 V and add a bulk reservoir capacitor near the VM pin to absorb motor back-EMF.
This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives, and practical PCB thermal guidance not found in the manufacturer datasheet alone, giving engineers a single source for sourcing and second-source-equal-cross-reference decisions on the DRV8816 half-H-bridge family.

Applications typiques
DRV8816PWP convient pour 6 applications: Brushed DC Motor Driver, Bipolar Stepper Motor Winding Driver (paired), Solenoid and Valve Driver, LED String Driver, Relay and Actuator Driver, Robotics and Hobby Servo Power Stage.
Brushed DC Motor Driver
The DRV8816PWP is purpose-built for brushed DC motor control in the 8 V to 38 V supply range typical of 12 V and 24 V industrial and appliance rails. Its two independent 1/2-H-bridge outputs deliver 2.8 A peak per channel, which covers most small pumps, fans, and gearbox-driven actuators. The integrated current-sense amplifier and programmable blanking time let a host MCU run a PI current loop for soft-start and torque limiting. Compared with discrete gate-drive solutions, the DRV8816PWP removes shoot-through risk and cuts bill-of-materials count, which simplifies UL/CE compliance for motor appliances.
Recommandé
Bipolar Stepper Motor Winding Driver (paired)
Two DRV8816PWP devices wired externally form two complete H-bridges, enough to drive one bipolar stepper motor in microstep or full-step mode at up to 38 V. The DRV8816's 200 kHz PWM capability supports high-frequency current chopping for smooth microstepping without audible whine, an advantage over slower integrated drivers. The internal blanking circuit prevents false current-sense trips during the diode reverse-recovery interval, which matters at low speeds and high-torque microsteps. For a single-chip stepper solution, consider the DRV8844PWPR dual full H-bridge; for a flexible design that may grow to two motors, the DRV8816PWP keeps options open.
Recommandé
Solenoid and Valve Driver
The DRV8816PWP's 1/2-H-bridge topology is ideal for driving proportional solenoids, latching valves, and relay coils in industrial automation and process-control equipment. Each output stage can sink or source up to 2.8 A, enough for 24 V hydraulic and pneumatic valve coils. The integrated flyback handling via low-side recirculation through the DMOS body diode, plus the 40 V absolute maximum supply, safely absorbs inductive kickback. Built-in thermal shutdown with a fault flag enables safe fault propagation to a safety PLC without external monitoring circuitry, which is critical for SIL-rated systems.
Recommandé
LED String Driver
Beyond motors, the DRV8816PWP can drive high-current LED strings in architectural, automotive, and signage lighting. Each half-H bridge can PWM at up to 200 kHz, far above the flicker fusion threshold, and the wide 8 V to 38 V input range supports both 12 V and 24 V LED strips. Current is set with an external sense resistor and the integrated current-limit comparator. Compared with a dedicated LED driver, the DRV8816PWP offers higher peak currents and easier fault handling but consumes more PCB area; choose it when you already have one in stock for motor control and want to reuse the same BOM across product variants.
Recommandé
Relay and Actuator Driver
Use the DRV8816PWP to switch 24 V industrial relays, contactors, and latching actuators from a 3.3 V or 5 V microcontroller GPIO. Each half-H-bridge output can both energize and de-energize a relay coil without external flyback diodes, because the low-side DMOS handles recirculation. With 2.8 A peak per channel, the driver comfortably handles the inrush of most signal and power relays. The exposed PowerPAD provides the thermal headroom needed for continuous on-coil current, which matters for latching actuators that stay energized for long durations in battery-backed systems.
Recommandé
Robotics and Hobby Servo Power Stage
Hobby robotics, small CNC machines, and educational platforms benefit from the DRV80074's flexibility and low cost. The two 1/2-H bridges can each drive a small brushed DC gearmotor for wheels or arms; for a pan-tilt camera gimbal, both bridges can be paralleled into one full H-bridge for higher peak current. The parallel INx/ENx interface is easy to drive from an Arduino, Raspberry Pi Pico, or STM32 without SPI overhead, which keeps firmware beginner-friendly. Compared to Joule-driven discrete designs, the DRV8816PWP provides safer fault response and reduces the PCB footprint for compact robot platforms.

Notes de conception
Estimated: At 24 V supply, 2 A continuous per channel, total dissipation (DRV ~ P = I^2 x R_DS(on) x 2) can exceed 2 W with both channels active. The exposed PowerPAD must be soldered to a copper pour of at least 1 square inch (645 mm^2) to keep the junction inside the SOA. Without adequate copper, the internal thermal-shutdown circuit can cycle the outputs and cause motor stuttering at high ambient temperatures.
Place a 100 nF ceramic capacitor as close as possible to the VM pin and a bulk capacitor of at least 100 uF on the motor supply rail within 5 mm of the IC. The bootstrap capacitors on VCP and VCP2 must be 100 nF ceramic, also placed close to the IC. Use wide, short traces (at least 0.5 mm wide per ampere of peak current) on OUT1A, OUT1B, OUT2A, OUT2B, and VM to minimize voltage drop and ringing during PWM transitions.
Do not exceed 40 V on the VM pin, even momentarily - inductive kickback from the motor can cause catastrophic failure. Always connect the nFAULT pin to the host MCU so the firmware can react to thermal shutdown, UVLO, or overcurrent events. The ISENSE resistor value sets the chopping current - use a 1% or better tolerance resistor and place it close to the ISENSE pin to avoid noise-induced false triggering of the current limit.
Keep the high-current motor traces (OUTx and VM return) physically separated from the low-level logic traces (INx, ENx, VDD) to avoid capacitive coupling that can corrupt the INx/ENx timing. Use a four-layer PCB with a dedicated ground plane under the IM/ML area; the exposed power plane converts the PowerPAD into a heatsink. Connect all GND pins to the ground plane with multiple vias for low-impedance return paths.
