ICM7228BIPI Présentation

The Intersil ICM7228BIPI is a CMOS integrated circuit that interfaces microprocessors to an 8-digit, 7-segment numeric LED display, housed in a 28-pin PDIP through-hole package. It integrates segment decoders, multiplex scan circuitry, segment and digit drivers, and an 8x8 static memory into a single IC, eliminating the need for external driver transistors or refresh logic. The device operates from a single 5V supply and sinks segment current directly through internal drivers rated to drive common-cathode LED displays.

An LED display driver is a category of power management / display driver IC that converts parallel or serial digital data into multiplexed segment-drive waveforms suitable for 7-segment numeric or 14/16-segment alphanumeric displays. Within the broader taxonomy, ICM7228BIPI sits at LED Display Driver -> Display Driver -> PMIC -> Power Management -> Integrated Circuit, and serves as a turnkey human-machine interface solution for instruments, meters, and point-of-sale terminals.

Key features include two on-board 7-segment decoder types (Type B for hexadecimal display), 8-byte static RAM that holds digit data independently of the microprocessor, separate segment and digit driver outputs sized for typical LED common-cathode arrays, and a 4-bit data bus with chip-select and write-strobe inputs that allow multiplexing multiple ICM7228 devices on the same bus. The B-suffix variant supports hexadecimal decoding (0-9, A-F) with leading zero blanking, making it suitable for both decimal instrumentation readouts and hex debug displays.

Typical applications include digital panel meters, frequency counters, bench multimeters, industrial process controllers, point-of-sale terminals, instrumentation readouts, and any embedded system that needs to drive a multiplexed 8-digit LED display from a microcontroller without dedicating processor cycles to refresh. The wide operating temperature range supports both industrial and commercial deployments.

When designing with this part, ensure the segment current-setting resistor values are chosen to limit peak segment current below the device's absolute maximum rating (refer to the manufacturer datasheet for the exact value), and add bulk decoupling close to VCC and GND. The 28-pin PDIP footprint is generous and easy to hand-solder or breadboard, making the part popular in legacy designs, education kits, and hobby projects where SMD parts would be inconvenient.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in same-package alternatives, and practical design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet, giving engineers a single source for evaluating the ICM7228BIPI for new designs and field replacements.

Applications typiques

ICM7228BIPI convient pour 7 applications: Digital Panel Meter, Frequency Counter Display, Industrial Process Controller, Point-of-Sale Terminal, Bench Multimeter Display, Hobby / Educational Electronics Kit, Legacy Instrumentation Replacement.

🖥️

Digital Panel Meter

The ICM7228BIPI is well suited for digital panel meter readouts because its 8-digit multiplexed 7-segment drive matches the typical panel-meter digit count and its Type B hexadecimal decoding enables direct readout of calibrated voltage, current, or frequency values without extra firmware. The 28-pin PDIP through-hole package simplifies hand-soldered assembly in low-volume industrial meter housings. Placed between the 5 V logic rail and the 8-digit common-cathode display, the part handles multiplexing and refresh automatically while the host microcontroller only writes digit data on demand. Trade-off: only 8 digits are supported, so wider readouts require an additional driver stage.

🔬

Frequency Counter Display

Frequency counters require stable, multiplexed 8-digit readouts that the ICM7228BIPI provides directly without host refresh overhead. The Type B hexadecimal decoding allows direct display of frequency values in kHz or MHz while the internal 8x8 RAM holds the digit data independently of the counter logic. The 5 V single-supply operation matches TTL/CMOS counter front ends, and the 28-pin PDIP footprint supports hand-prototyped bench instruments. Use the chip-select and write-strobe inputs to drive multiple ICM7228 devices from one counter bus if more than 8 digits are needed.

🏭

Industrial Process Controller

Industrial process controllers need rugged, reliable human-machine interfaces, and the ICM7228BIPI's mature CMOS design and 28-pin PDIP through-hole construction provide field-replaceable serviceability. The Type B hex decoding supports PID setpoint displays in hexadecimal or decimal, and the 8-digit capacity is sufficient for temperature, flow, and pressure readouts in process plants. Because the part is produced for legacy industrial maintenance, it integrates easily into existing controller boards that use the same footprint. Trade-off: the through-hole package occupies more PCB area than SMD alternatives.

💵

Point-of-Sale Terminal

Point-of-sale (POS) terminals need bright, easy-to-read 8-digit numeric displays for prices, totals, and quantities, all of which the ICM7228BIPI drives directly from a host microcontroller. The internal 8x8 static RAM means that price display data persists between transactions without continuous firmware refresh. The 5 V CMOS interface is compatible with legacy POS mother, and the 28-pin PDIP package allows service technicians to swap displays without reworking SMD pads. This is a mature, field-proven architecture used in POS terminals for decades.

🔧

Bench Multimeter Display

Bench multimeters require large, bright 7-segment readouts that the ICM7228BIPI drives through its on-chip multiplex scan and segment drivers. The Type B decoding supports direct hex display of bit-pattern or frequency-mode readings, and the 8-digit capacity suits 6.5-digit meters plus range/function indicators. The 28-pin PDIP package is convenient in hand-built bench instrument prototypes. Trade-off: only common-cathode LED displays are supported, so common-anode displays require an external inverter stage.

💡

Hobby / Educational Electronics Kit

The ICM7228BIPI is a popular building block in microcontroller training kits and hobby projects because its 28-pin PDIP package is breadboard-friendly and hand-solderable. Students learn microprocessor-to-LED-display interfacing using just a parallel data bus, chip-select, and write-strobe line, with no external driver transistors required. The internal 8x8 RAM holds display contents during programming experiments, and the mature datasheet includes clear timing diagrams suitable for educational use. Trade-off: the through-hole package consumes significant breadboard real estate.

🛠️

Legacy Instrumentation Replacement

Many legacy industrial and scientific instruments use ICM7228-series drivers on 28-pin PDIP footprints, and the ICM7228BIPI is the authentic replacement part for field service. According to the Renesas datasheet, this part is still produced primarily for maintenance of installed equipment, so spare-part inventory is straightforward. The drop-in compatibility with other ICM7228A/B/D variants means service technicians can substitute parts based on availability. Use Rochester Electronics for guaranteed authentic stock in critical MRO applications.

Notes de conception

The ICM7228BIPI operates from a single +5 V supply. Place a 0.1 uF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the VCC pin (pin 27) and a 10 uF bulk electrolytic capacitor on the same supply rail to suppress digital switching noise generated by the on-chip multiplex scan oscillator. Estimated: assuming 8 digits multiplexed at ~200 Hz per digit and average segment current of 5 mA per segment, total supply current is approximately 30-50 mA plus digit-driver currents; refer to the datasheet absolute maximum ratings for the exact segment-current limit before finalizing the series resistor values.

The 28-pin PDIP through-hole package is breadboard-friendly and easy to hand-solder. Keep the segment and digit output traces short and direct to minimize parasitic capacitance on the multiplexed lines, which would otherwise slow the segment-driver rise/fall times and cause ghosting on the LED display. Place the external current-setting resistors (one per segment line) close to the IC pins and route the LED common-cathode returns to a star-ground point tied to the IC GND pin (pin 2). For multi-IC designs, separate analog and digital ground returns to avoid switching-noise coupling into sensitive measurement front-ends.

Do not exceed the absolute maximum segment current specified in the datasheet - the internal segment drivers will source or sink excessive current without external limiting resistors, potentially damaging the IC and the LED display. Always include a series resistor on each segment line sized for your display's Vf and desired brightness. The chip-select (CS, pin 7) and write-strobe (WR, pin 8) inputs are active-low; tying either pin high disables writes but does not blank the display. The shutdown pin (pin 10) blanks the display for power-saving modes - remember to deassert it during normal operation. Software written for the older ICM7218 family may need updates to handle the ICM7228 single-digit access mode.
