ISO102B Présentation
What is an isolation buffer amplifier? An isolation amplifier is an analog front-end device that transfers a small differential signal across a galvanic isolation barrier while rejecting high common-mode voltages between input and output grounds. Inside the ISO102 family, a low-level input stage modulates a carrier that crosses a capacitive barrier; the receiver demodulates and reconstructs the signal. Compared to opto-isolated or transformer-based isolators, the capacitive-barrier design of the ISO102/ISO120 family preserves analog linearity and bandwidth, making the device a fundamental building block in medical, industrial, and process-control signal chains where patient safety or ground-loop protection is mandatory.
Key features include 1.4 mV maximum input offset voltage (B grade), low input bias current, a unity-gain buffer input stage, and integrated short-circuit-protected output. The unit delivers 2500 Vrms continuous (1 s test) isolation rating. The hermetic side-brazed ceramic DIP (16-CDIP) package provides a wide operating temperature range and meets the reliability expectations of military, aerospace, and down-hole instrumentation programs.
The ISO102B uses a duty-cycle modulation-demodulation topology with a 2pF differential capacitive isolation barrier. Unlike transformer or optocoupler isolators, this capacitive approach delivers excellent common-mode transient immunity (CMTI) and preserves DC accuracy down to sub-Hz frequencies. Internal ±15V regulators on each side of the barrier decouple the barrier from supply noise, allowing clean operation from poorly filtered industrial rails.
Typical applications include ECG/EEG patient monitoring front-ends, industrial 4-20 mA loop isolation, motor-drive IGBT gate-driver analog feedback, high-voltage test equipment signal paths, and process-control analog I/O modules. The wide 70 kHz bandwidth supports thermocouple, strain-gauge, and flow-meter signal conditioning where the input signal is several volts above earth ground.
When designing with the ISO102B, place decoupling capacitors as close as possible to both the input-side and output-side supply pins (1 µF ceramic minimum), and use a 0.1 µF bypass cap for high-frequency noise. Maintain at least 8 mm of creepage/clearance on the PCB to preserve the 2500 Vrms isolation rating and avoid routing any conductor under the package that would compromise the barrier.

Applications typiques
ISO102B convient pour 6 applications: ECG / Patient Monitoring Front-End, 4-20 mA Industrial Loop Isolation, Motor Drive IGBT Gate-Driver Analog Feedback, High-Voltage Test and Measurement Equipment, Process Control Analog I/O Modules, Aerospace and Military Avionics.
ECG / Patient Monitoring Front-End
The Texas Instruments ISO102B's 1500 Vrms continuous isolation, 6000 V peak transient rating, and 70 kHz bandwidth make it well matched to ECG and EEG front-ends where the patient side must be galvanically isolated from the line-powered main circuit. According to the TI ISO102 datasheet, the capacitive barrier delivers 5 kV dielectric withstand test capability, helping the host system meet IEC 60601-1 patient-auxiliary current limits. The 70 kHz bandwidth preserves QRS complex fidelity (typically 0.05-150 Hz in clinical ECG, far below the 70 kHz limit) without introducing the low-frequency phase shift of opto-isolator solutions. Compared to discrete optocoupler designs, the ISO102B saves PCB area and removes the need for precision input amplifiers to drive an LED.

4-20 mA Industrial Loop Isolation
The Texas Instruments ISO102B isolates the analog signal path of 4-20 mA current loops in process-control systems, breaking ground loops between field instrumentation (flow meters, pressure transmitters, level sensors) and PLC analog inputs. The 1500 Vrms continuous isolation with ±10V to ±20V supply range allows the device to swing the full industrial ±10V signal range, while its 70 kHz bandwidth is more than sufficient for the DC and slow-AC control signals typical of process loops. Compared to the smaller SOIC ISO120 alternative, the ISO102B's hermetic ceramic DIP is the preferred choice for outdoor, down-hole, and refinery-mounted instrumentation subject to humidity and thermal cycling.
Recommandé
Motor Drive IGBT Gate-Driver Analog Feedback
The Texas Instruments ISO102B isolates analog feedback signals from the high-side of IGBT half-bridge motor drives, where the high-side shunt-current sense or DC-link voltage divider is referenced to a switching node swinging several hundred volts above ground. The device's 6000 V peak transient rating handles the dV/dt transients produced by the IGBT bridge, and the 70 kHz bandwidth supports the PWM carrier frequencies up to ~15 kHz without introducing excessive phase lag in the current-control loop. The ±10V to ±20V supply range accepts the bipolar signals produced by in-line current-shunt amplifiers. The hermetic 16-CDIP is preferred in traction and aerospace drives where plastic isolation packages are disqualified for reliability reasons.

High-Voltage Test and Measurement Equipment
The Texas Instruments ISO102B is used in high-voltage test equipment where a small-signal measurement must be transferred from a probe that is referenced to several kV of common-mode voltage to a ground-referenced instrument (oscilloscope, data acquisition, or protective relay). The 1500 Vrms continuous and 2500 Vrms 1-second ratings provide the dielectric margin required by IEC 61010-031 for test probe assemblies. With 70 kHz of bandwidth, the ISO102B supports power-quality and partial-discharge measurements that contain harmonics up to a few kHz; for >100 kHz content, an alternate amplifier such as the ISO122 should be considered. The hermetic ceramic DIP also handles the wide temperature swings seen in outdoor substation and test-bay environments.

Process Control Analog I/O Modules
The Texas Instruments ISO102B isolates thermocouple, RTD, and strain-gauge inputs in distributed control system (DCS) and PLC analog I/O modules, where 16 or 32 channels must fit a small backplane footprint and 1500 Vrms channel-to-bus isolation is mandatory. The 1.4 mV max input offset (B grade) is sufficient for J-type thermocouple cold-junction compensation and 4-wire RTD ratiometric measurements. The capacitive barrier rejects the 50/60 Hz common-mode noise common in industrial cabinets, and the 70 kHz bandwidth supports strain-gauge dynamic-load signals from load cells. Compared to the smaller ISO120SO package, the ISO102B hermetic CDIP handles the wider thermal range of outdoor I/O cabinets.

Aerospace and Military Avionics
The Texas Instruments ISO102B's hermetic side-brazed ceramic DIP (16-CDIP) package, wide -40 C to +85 C operating range, and 6000 V peak transient tolerance make it a qualified choice for military and aerospace programs that require hermeticity and radiation-tolerant analog isolation. The 70 kHz bandwidth covers avionic bus analog telemetry, actuator position feedback, and inertial-reference signal isolation. The TI ISO102 datasheet's 1500 Vrms continuous / 2500 Vrms 1-second rating is consistent with MIL-STD-704 and DO-160 power-quality requirements. Compared to the surface-mount ISO120, the through-hole 16-CDIP also supports the lead-forming and through-hole assembly processes still common in many military programs.

Notes de conception
Maintain at least 8 mm of creepage and clearance on the PCB between the input-side and output-side copper to preserve the 1500 Vrms continuous / 2500 Vrms 1-second isolation rating. The capacitive barrier in the ISO102B is only 2 pF; any contamination, solder flux residue, or conformal coating bridging the barrier on the PCB will create a leakage path and cause the device to fail dielectric-withstand testing. Keep all signal and supply traces on the input side of the package physically separate from those on the output side, and never route a conductor under the package body.
Place 1 µF ceramic decoupling capacitors as close as possible to both the input-side V+ / V- pins and the output-side V+ / V- pins of the ISO102B. Add a parallel 0.1 µF ceramic for high-frequency noise bypass. The two sides of the barrier each have their own internal ±15V regulators, but clean external supplies are required because the regulators reject supply noise only above ~10 kHz. Do not share input-side and output-side ground planes - they must remain isolated to preserve the dielectric barrier.
The hermetic 16-CDIP package of the ISO102B has a junction-to-ambient thermal resistance (theta_JA) of approximately 80 C/W when socketed or PCB-mounted without a heatsink. Estimated: at ±15V supplies and 10 mA quiescent current per side, internal dissipation is about 300 mW total, which yields a junction temperature rise of ~24 C above ambient - well within the 150 C absolute maximum. In enclosed housings with no airflow, add a small clip-on heatsink to the ceramic body if the ambient temperature approaches +85 C, particularly when the device is operated at ±20V supply.
Route the input-side and output-side power and signal traces on opposite edges of the 16-CDIP footprint, with no copper fill on either layer beneath the package body. Use guard rings tied to the input ground and output ground respectively, extending as close to the package pins as possible without bridging the barrier. For multilayer boards, do not place any via or signal trace directly under the 16-CDIP cavity, since the ceramic seal is the dielectric barrier and any conductor routed under it will capacitively couple input and output nodes.
Informations de conformité
The ISO102B is a hermetic side-brazed ceramic DIP; lead (Pb) is present in the ceramic seal and the Kovar leads, so the part is non-RoHS. The ceramic package is hermetic per MIL-STD-883, suitable for military and aerospace programs that explicitly require lead-containing hermetic packages. The part is not AEC-Q100 qualified (industrial/aerospace temperature grade, not automotive).
