LPC2210FBD144/01 Présentation
A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, memory, peripherals, and I/O on one die. The LPC2210 belongs to the ARM7 family of microcontrollers, which falls under the broader hierarchy of microcontrollers -> embedded processors -> integrated circuits -> semiconductors. ROMless variants like the LPC2210 are designed for systems that require large external memories (SRAM, SDRAM, NOR flash) and deterministic boot behavior, common in industrial control, point-of-sale, and medical systems where code size exceeds what on-chip flash can offer.
Key features include an 8-channel 10-bit ADC with conversion time as low as 2.44 us, four 32-bit timers with capture/compare, six PWM outputs, a Real-Time Clock (RTC) with separate power domain, two UARTs, two I2C buses, an SPI interface, and a USB 2.0 Full-Speed Device port. The device provides up to 76 GPIOs depending on bus configuration, nine external interrupt pins, and a 16-bit external memory controller supporting SRAM, ROM, NOR flash, and SDRAM. Operating voltage is 1.8V core / 3.3V I/O, with industrial temperature grade (-40C to +85C).
Architecturally, the LPC2210 uses a von Neumann single-bus design with the ARM7TDMI-S core, a low-latency Vectored Interrupt Controller (VIC) supporting up to 32 vectored IRQ slots, and the AMBA AHB peripheral bus. The 10-bit successive-approximation ADC is augmented with on-chip op-amp buffering capability on some channels. The integrated PLL allows the device to run from a low-frequency crystal while generating the high-speed internal clock.
Typical applications include industrial control and PLCs, medical instrumentation, point-of-sale terminals, access control, gateway and protocol converter designs, and embedded control where large external flash is required for firmware storage. The wide GPIO count and rich peripheral set also make it suitable for printer controllers and HVAC interfaces.
When designing with the LPC2210FBD144/01, an external boot memory is mandatory because the device is ROMless - the vector fetch on reset is performed from external CS0. Ensure the external memory interface is correctly wired and that bus-cycle timing matches the chosen SRAM/SDRAM speed grade. Power-rail decoupling (100 nF + 10 uF near each supply pin) is required for clean ADC operation.

Applications typiques
LPC2210FBD144/01 convient pour 6 applications: Industrial Control and PLCs, Medical Instrumentation, Point-of-Sale Terminals, Access Control and Security Panels, Gateway and Protocol Converters, Embedded Printer and HVAC Controllers.
Industrial Control and PLCs
The LPC2210FBD144/01 fits industrial PLC and process-control designs thanks to its 75 MHz ARM7TDMI-S core, 4 32-bit timers, 6 PWM channels, 8-channel 10-bit ADC and up to 76 GPIOs. The wide GPIO and external memory interface support complex ladder-logic replacements and deterministic control loops, while the industrial -40C to +85C temperature rating lets the part survive cabinet environments. Compared with smaller Cortex-M parts, the LPC2210 offers the older ARM7 ecosystem with proven long-life-cycle firmware. Placed as the main CPU it can read sensor inputs via the ADC, drive motor outputs through PWM, and communicate with remote I/O over UART/I2C/SPI; the trade-off is higher power consumption than newer Cortex-M0 designs.
Recommandé
Medical Instrumentation
The LPC2210FBD144/01 supports medical instrument designs that require deterministic real-time behavior and external memory for large firmware/firmware-update images. The 10-bit ADC with 2.44 us conversion time is sufficient for low-bandwidth patient-monitoring signals such as temperature, pressure, and battery voltage, while the USB Full-Speed Device port enables tethered diagnostic connections. Its 1.8V core / 3.3V I/O dual-rail design simplifies analog front-end integration. Placed as the host controller, it can manage the LCD, keyboard, USB, and on-board sensors; the trade-off versus modern Cortex-M4F parts is the lack of a hardware FPU for DSP-style signal processing.
Recommandé
Point-of-Sale Terminals
The LPC2210FBD144/01 is well suited to POS terminal controllers because its 75 MHz ARM7 core can drive a graphical LCD, keypad, magnetic-stripe reader, and thermal printer all from a single chip. The external memory interface allows large bitmap buffers and multilingual firmware to be stored in parallel NOR flash, while USB Full-Speed Device enables PC connectivity. Compared with newer ARM Cortex parts, the LPC2210's mature toolchain and proven long-term supply make it attractive for low-risk POS designs. Placed as the main controller it runs the transaction logic, manages the printer, and drives the customer display; the trade-off is the older Thumb-only ARM7 ISA versus newer Cortex-M instruction set.
Recommandé
Access Control and Security Panels
The LPC2210FBD144/01 is a strong fit for access-control panels that require a large number of GPIOs for door sensors, keypads, and relay outputs, plus external flash for credential databases. The 10-bit ADC supports battery and tamper-line monitoring, while the RTC with separate power domain enables accurate time-stamping of events. Its industrial temperature rating allows deployment in unconditioned electrical closets. Placed as the panel controller, it manages Wiegand readers, strikes, and the RS-485 upstream bus; the trade-off versus newer parts is the absence of secure-boot hardware acceleration.
Recommandé
Gateway and Protocol Converters
The LPC2210FBD144/01 serves protocol-conversion gateways (Modbus to BACnet, M-Bus to Ethernet, etc.) because its mix of 2 UARTs, 2 I2C buses, and SPI can bridge multiple fieldbuses simultaneously. The external memory interface allows the gateway to buffer large protocol payloads, while the 75 MHz CPU can run a small RTOS for multi-protocol handling. Its industrial temperature range and long-life-cycle status make it a fit for 24/7 gateway deployments. Placed as the master it polls field devices on one bus and forwards data to a higher-level network; the trade-off is the absence of on-chip Ethernet MAC, requiring an external PHY.
Recommandé
Embedded Printer and HVAC Controllers
The LPC2210FBD144/01 supports embedded printer controllers and HVAC interfaces where its PWM outputs drive motors or fan speeds and its ADC reads temperature/pressure sensors. The external memory bus handles large font tables or lookup curves, while USB Full-Speed Device provides host connectivity. Its industrial temperature rating suits unconditioned mechanical enclosures. Placed as the system controller it sequences the print head steppers via PWM and reads environmental sensors via the ADC; the trade-off versus newer parts is the lack of a Cortex-M4 DSP extension for advanced motor-control algorithms.

Principaux différenciateurs
- ROMless design with full 16-bit external memory bus (vs LPC2214FBD144/01)
- Industrial -40C to +85C temperature grade with proven long-term supply (vs LPC2220FBD144/01)
- Pinned-out 10-bit ADC on dedicated pins (vs LPC2290FBD144/01)
Notes de conception
The LPC2210FBD144/01 is ROMless, so the external bus CS0 must contain a valid boot device at reset. A common pitfall is leaving CS0 floating or wired to a slow device that misses the first vector fetch - always place a 70 ns or faster parallel NOR flash on CS0 and verify the bus-width configuration matches the BOOT[1:0] pins. The /01 revision specifically corrected the early-revision errata on CS0 timing; if you must use a non-/01 device, consult the NXP errata sheet for the workaround.
The LPC2210FBD144/01 requires a clean 1.8V core rail and a 3.3V I/O rail; the internal LDO generates 1.8V from the 3.3V rail when configured. Per the NXP datasheet, place 100 nF decoupling capacitors on every VDD pin pair (1.8V and 3.3V) and a single 10 uF bulk capacitor near the package. For noisy industrial environments add a ferrite bead between the 3.3V regulator and the LPC2210 VDD pins to suppress switching-noise injection from external memory writes.
The 144-pin LQFP at 0.5 mm pitch is straightforward to route on a 4-layer PCB with continuous ground and power planes. Per NXP design guidance, keep the external data bus traces under 50 mm and use series 22-33 ohm source-impedance resistors on D[15:0] and A[23:0] to dampen ringing. Place the external SRAM/SDRAM no more than 25 mm from the package to maintain bus timing; route XTAL1/XTAL2 traces as short as possible with a ground guard ring to reduce EMI susceptibility.
The LPC2210 ADC achieves full 10-bit accuracy only when VREF is decoupled with a 100 nF + 10 uF capacitor pair and the analog ground (VSSA) is isolated from the digital ground with a ferrite or single-point bridge. For mixed-signal designs, route the analog AIN[7:0] traces away from the external data bus and PWM outputs, and avoid running them parallel for more than a few millimeters to prevent digital-to-analog crosstalk from corrupting ADC samples.
