LT8210IUJ Présentation
A buck-boost DC/DC controller is a switch-mode power supply IC that steps the input voltage up or down while maintaining regulation across the transition. It belongs to the hierarchy switching regulator → DC-DC converter → power management IC → semiconductor, and is used whenever VIN may sit above, below, or equal to VOUT (for example, 12V automotive cranking or 24V industrial buses powering 24V, 12V, or 5V loads). Compared with single-topology buck or boost controllers, a 4-switch buck-boost keeps the output in regulation through the entire VIN range with a single magnetic, simplifying EMI and reducing PCB area.
Key features of the LT8210IUJ include: 2.8V to 100V input operating range, 1V to 100V adjustable output, 400 kHz default switching frequency, integrated 4-switch synchronous FET drivers, and selectable PassThru that bypasses switching when VIN is close to VOUT to maximize efficiency. The device also provides current-mode control, programmable soft-start, and fault outputs including PG (power good) and FAULT, alongside a robust set of protection features (OCP, OVP, thermal shutdown).
Internally, the LT8210IUJ uses a peak current-mode control architecture with four N-channel gate drivers, allowing the part to connect the input, output, and inductor in different topologies depending on mode. In PassThru, both high-side switches are held on so VIN connects directly to VOUT, eliminating switching loss when VIN ≈ VOUT. In Burst Mode, quiescent current drops for sleep/standby, making the part attractive for always-on systems.
Typical applications include 24V/48V industrial bus regulation, automotive 12V battery and start-stop rails, redundant telecom hold-up supplies, and wide-range battery-powered equipment. For high-current multiphase designs, the pin-compatible LT8210-1 adds ISHARE for masterless current sharing across paralleled phases.
When designing with the LT8210IUJ, observe the 100V absolute-maximum rating and select external MOSFETs and inductors with adequate voltage and saturation margin. Keep the high-current loop tight and follow ADI's reference layout to manage EMI in high-frequency buck-boost operation.

Applications typiques
LT8210IUJ convient pour 6 applications: 24V / 48V Industrial Bus Regulation, Automotive 12V Start-Stop Battery Rail, Wide-Range Battery-Powered Equipment, Telecom Hold-Up and Redundant Supplies, Industrial Sensor and Instrumentation Power, Multiphase High-Current Power (with LT8210-1).
24V / 48V Industrial Bus Regulation
The LT8210IUJ's 2.8 V to 100 V input range and 1 V to 100 V adjustable output let it regulate 24 V or 48 V industrial bus rails down to stable 24 V, 12 V, or 5 V load voltages. Its 4-switch buck-boost topology maintains regulation when the bus sags below VOUT during heavy load steps, eliminating the need for a separate boost stage. PassThru mode passes the input directly to the output when VIN ≈ VOUT, minimizing switching loss in steady industrial conditions. The 40-QFN (6x6) package and 400 kHz switching allow compact designs. Industrial PLCs, factory sensors, and motor-control auxiliary supplies benefit from the controller's OCP, OVP, and PG/FAULT protection.
Recommandé
Automotive 12V Start-Stop Battery Rail
The LT8210IUJ is well suited to automotive 12 V start-stop rails because its 100 V input withstands load-dump transients and its 4-switch buck-boost keeps a 12 V output regulated during cold-crank events when the battery dips as low as ~3 V. The device's industrial −40 °C to +125 °C rating covers under-hood and cabin electronics requirements. Burst Mode drops quiescent current for ignition-off standby, while PG/FAULT outputs interface cleanly with body-control modules. The 2.5 A output capability supports body modules, infotainment head units, and ADAS sensor supplies. ADI's automotive-grade LT8210 variants pair the same silicon with AEC-Q100 documentation.
Recommandé
Wide-Range Battery-Powered Equipment
Portable and battery-powered equipment with widely varying battery voltages (Li-ion packs, supercapacitor banks, multi-chemistry industrial batteries) benefit from the LT8210IUJ's 2.8 V to 100 V input and 1 V to 100 V output. The synchronous 4-switch topology achieves high efficiency over the full discharge profile without discrete topology switching. PassThru mode maximizes runtime when VIN is close to the load voltage. Programmable soft-start and current-mode control protect sensitive downstream analog and digital loads. The 40-QFN (6x6) package with exposed thermal pad helps dissipate heat in fanless enclosures.
Recommandé
Telecom Hold-Up and Redundant Supplies
The LT8210IUJ operates from 2.8 V to 100 V and provides tightly regulated output during hold-up events when bulk capacitors take over from the upstream converter. Its 100 V rating allows operation from −48 V telecom bus returns as well as +48 V standard telecom feeds, and its 4-switch buck-boost seamlessly handles polarity-corrected rails. PassThru minimizes dissipation in steady state, while forced continuous mode handles fast transient loads typical of DSP and ASIC rails. The PG and FAULT outputs integrate with telecom supervisory circuits for alarm and redundancy management.
Recommandé
Industrial Sensor and Instrumentation Power
Industrial 4–20 mA loops, process transmitters, and field instruments run on 24 V nominal bus rails that often have to support 12 V, 5 V, and ±15 V analog rails. The LT8210IUJ's 2.8 V to 100 V input covers the full industrial 24 V tolerance band plus transients, and its buck-boost capability lets one part power multiple downstream rails from a single conversion stage. PassThru mode ensures clean analog rails for ADCs and instrumentation amplifiers when VIN ≈ VOUT. The 40-QFN (6x6) package and 400 kHz switching allow small magnetic and output filter, saving PCB area inside sealed sensor housings.
Recommandé
Multiphase High-Current Power (with LT8210-1)
When more than 2.5 A output current is required, designers can parallel multiple pin-compatible LT8210-1 controllers in the same 40-QFN (6x6) footprint to scale current and reduce ripple. The LT8210-1's ISHARE pin enables masterless current sharing across phases, eliminating the need for an external master controller. Combined with the LT8210IUJ's 100 V input and 4-switch topology, this scales cleanly into higher-power industrial and telecom systems. Same-package pin compatibility means existing PCB layouts can migrate from single-phase to multiphase by swapping controllers and duplicating the phase circuitry.

Notes de conception
Estimated: at VIN = 24 V, VOUT = 12 V, IOUT = 2.5 A, switching losses in the four external MOSFETs and the controller are the dominant heat sources. The 40-QFN (6x6 mm) exposed pad must be soldered to a continuous ground copper pour on both top and inner PCB layers with thermal vias for heat flow to bottom-side copper. Without adequate copper, junction temperature will exceed 125 °C at full industrial load. Provide at least 1 square inch of top-side copper for 2.5 A continuous operation.
Place the four bootstrap capacitors (BST1–BST4) as close as possible to the corresponding BST/SW pins to keep the high-side gate drive pulses clean. Keep the input capacitor, the four switch-node traces, and the output capacitor loop area minimized and symmetric for the two phases. Use 1 oz copper on top and inner layers; 2 oz copper improves thermal and high-current performance at 2.5 A. Follow the reference layout in the Analog Devices LT8210 datasheet Rev. B for EMI-critical designs.
Do not exceed the 100 V absolute-maximum input rating - load-dump and transient events above 100 V will damage the controller. Select external N-channel MOSFETs with at least 100 V VDS rating and adequate SOA at the switching node. Use the EN/UVLO pin to set the desired turn-on threshold via a resistor divider, otherwise the part may attempt to switch before input bulk capacitors are charged. Keep the MODE pin at a defined logic level - a floating MODE pin can put the device into an undefined state at startup.
Separate AGND and PGND star-grounds at the exposed pad; do not run analog signals (FB, COMP, RT, SS) over noisy switch-node copper. Keep the feedback trace short and direct to the output capacitor's ground-side sense point for accurate regulation. Decouple VCC with 1 µF and 0.1 µF ceramic capacitors placed within 2 mm of the VCC pin, and provide 0.1 µF on each BST node to prevent shoot-through. Use wide, short traces between SW pins and the inductor to minimize ringing above 100 V transient rating.
The 400 kHz default switching produces edge rates in the tens of nanoseconds on SW nodes; ringing can couple into FB and disturb regulation. Snubber RC networks (typically 1 Ω + 1 nF) across each low-side FET can damp SW ringing in high-VIN designs. Keep the differential-mode EMI signature under limits by spreading the switching frequency slightly with RT, or move to forced continuous mode at light loads to keep the EMI spectrum predictable for automotive EMI standards.
