LTC2282CUP Présentation

The Analog Devices LTC2282CUP is a dual 12-bit, 105 Msps low-power 3V analog-to-digital converter (ADC) housed in a 64-lead QFN (9x9 mm) package with exposed pad. It is designed for digitizing high-frequency, wide-dynamic-range signals, with AC performance that includes 70.1 dB SNR and 85 dB SFDR at the Nyquist frequency, plus ±0.4 LSB INL and ±0.3 LSB DNL (typical).

An ADC (analog-to-digital converter) is a mixed-signal integrated circuit that samples continuous analog input voltages and converts each sample into a discrete digital code, forming the bridge between the analog front end and the digital signal-processing chain of a system. ADCs are positioned in the signal-conditioning hierarchy as: sensor/transducer -> analog front end -> ADC -> DSP/FPGA/microprocessor. High-speed, low-power pipelined ADCs like the LTC2282 sit at the heart of imaging, communications, and instrumentation systems where dynamic range and power budget are both critical.

The LTC2282CUP uses a pipelined architecture with per-stage digital error correction, providing 12-bit resolution at sample rates up to 105 Msps. Single 3V supply operation, optional 2.5V to 3.3V logic, and an integrated low-noise reference simplify board design. The differential analog inputs support input ranges of ±0.5V to ±1V, while an internal sample-and-hold handles full-scale input bandwidths of 250 MHz or higher, enabling undersampling of IF bands. Power dissipation is typically 540 mW (per the LTC2282 datasheet 2282fb) when both channels are active at full sample rate.

Typical applications include imaging and ultrasound front ends, baseband or low-IF digital receivers, cable and broadband modems, multi-channel instrumentation, and portable/wireless transceivers. The dual-channel architecture with tightly matched gain and offset also makes the part well suited to I/Q baseband sampling and diversity receivers where channel matching matters.

When designing with this part, pay particular attention to the analog-input common-mode voltage, the ENC sampling-clock duty cycle (50% ±5% recommended), and the layout of the exposed thermal pad to ground. The 64-lead QFN EP must be soldered to a sufficiently large ground pour to achieve the 33 C/W theta_JA figure noted in the manufacturer datasheet. Decouple each supply pin (AVDD, DVDD, OVDD) with a 0.1 uF ceramic plus a 10 uF bulk capacitor placed within 3 mm of the pin.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives, and practical design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet, giving engineers a faster path to a complete, qualified BOM.

Applications typiques

LTC2282CUP convient pour 6 applications: Medical Ultrasound Imaging Front End, Baseband / Low-IF Digital Receiver, Broadband Cable Modem / CMTS Downstream, Multi-Channel Data Acquisition System, Portable / Wireless Transceiver IF Digitizer, Radar / Lidar Signal Processing.

💊

Medical Ultrasound Imaging Front End

The LTC2282CUP's 70.1 dB SNR and 85 dB SFDR at 105 Msps make it a strong fit for medical ultrasound beamforming front ends where dynamic range directly determines diagnostic image quality. Two simultaneously sampling differential channels let the designer capture RF echo signals from adjacent transducer elements with matched gain and offset, preserving beam-steering accuracy across the array. The 250 MHz full-power input bandwidth supports undersampling of 30-50 MHz IF echo signals, and the 540 mW power budget (per datasheet 2282fb) is manageable in cart-based ultrasound systems with multi-channel architectures. Place each LTC2282CUP as a 2:1 MUX feeding subsequent digital down-conversion stages, with a 0.1 uF + 10 uF decoupling network on every supply pin.

🌐

Baseband / Low-IF Digital Receiver

The dual 12-bit 105 Msps architecture of the LTC2282CUP directly samples I and Q baseband signals in software-defined radio receivers, eliminating the analog down-conversion chain and improving channel matching for higher image rejection. With 70.1 dB SNR the part delivers 11+ ENOB at IF, sufficient for 3G/4G base-station observation receivers and femtocell digitizers. Single 3V supply operation reduces PMIC complexity in compact radio modules, while the 64-QFN-EP footprint allows the channel density required for multi-antenna MIMO receiver boards. Provide a clean 105 MHz ENC clock with 50% duty cycle to the differential clock inputs, and decouple the analog and digital supply domains with ferrite beads to keep digital switching noise out of the analog input path.

📺

Broadband Cable Modem / CMTS Downstream

The LTC2282CUP's 250 MHz analog input bandwidth and 70.1 dB SNR make it well suited to digitizing downstream QAM carriers in DOCSIS cable modem termination systems and head-end equipment. A single LTC2282CUP captures up to two adjacent 6 MHz or 8 MHz QAM channels simultaneously, supporting channel-bonding architectures. The 12-bit resolution is sufficient for 256-QAM with margin, while the low power dissipation (540 mW) simplifies the thermal design in densely populated head-end shelves. Add a fixed-gain differential amplifier (such as the AD8138) at the input to set the 2 V p-p full scale and provide 50 ohm input termination, then route the LVDS outputs through a controlled-impedance stripline to the downstream FPGA demodulator.

🏭

Multi-Channel Data Acquisition System

With two simultaneously sampling 12-bit channels at 105 Msps in one IC, the LTC2282CUP doubles the channel density of multi-channel data acquisition systems used in industrial vibration analysis, sonar arrays, and benchtop instrumentation. Tight gain and offset matching between the two channels (specified in the 2282fb datasheet) is critical for beamforming applications. The 64-QFN-EP package exposes a thermal pad that must be soldered to a 1+ square inch copper pour to achieve the 33 C/W theta_JA figure, keeping junction temperature below 125 C in densely populated PXI-style instruments. Plan for 105 Msps of LVDS or CMOS data offload per channel - 840 Mbps total - and verify FPGA pin-count sufficiency before board layout.

📱

Portable / Wireless Transceiver IF Digitizer

The LTC2282CUP's 3V single-supply operation and 540 mW power dissipation enable portable wireless transceiver IF digitizers where battery life matters. Dual channels can simultaneously sample the I and Q IF signals from a direct-conversion or low-IF mixer, simplifying the radio baseband chain. The 105 Msps sample rate supports IF bandwidths up to 50 MHz with margin, adequate for Wi-Fi 802.11n, WiMAX, and proprietary wideband protocols. The C-grade 0 C to +70 C commercial temperature range is acceptable for indoor portable devices; use the LTC2282IUP industrial variant for outdoor or vehicular deployment. Drive the clock input from a low-jitter PLL such as the LTC6946-1, and add a series ferrite on each supply pin to suppress digital switching noise from leaking into the radio front end.

✈️

Radar / Lidar Signal Processing

The 250 MHz full-power input bandwidth and 12-bit 105 Msps dual-channel capability of the LTC2282CUP support IF sampling in short-range radar and lidar signal-processing chains, where 70.1 dB SNR preserves range resolution on weak returns. Differential inputs reject common-mode noise from switching power supplies on the platform, while the small 64-QFN-EP footprint (9x9 mm) keeps the analog front end compact enough to fit alongside an FPGA in tight enclosures. For automotive AEC-Q100 requirements, evaluate the LTC2282IUP industrial variant (-40 C to +85 C) as an alternative. Lay the analog inputs and the ENC clock traces as matched-length differential pairs on the top layer, with a continuous ground plane beneath, and use the exposed pad as the only ground connection for the analog front end.

Notes de conception

The exposed thermal pad (EPAD) on the bottom of the 64-QFN package must be soldered directly to a continuous ground pour of at least 1 square inch to achieve the 33 C/W theta_JA figure noted in the manufacturer datasheet 2282fb. Use multiple thermal vias (0.3 mm drill, 0.5 mm pad) on a 1.0-1.2 mm pitch array under the EPAD to conduct heat to inner ground planes. Keep high-speed digital output traces (D0-D11, CLKOUT) on the opposite side of the board from the analog inputs, and route the ENC+/- clock as a length-matched differential pair on the top layer over a continuous ground plane.

Decouple each AVDD and DVDD pin with a 0.1 uF X7R ceramic placed within 3 mm of the pin, plus a 10 uF bulk tantalum or ceramic on each supply domain. Add a ferrite bead (600 ohm at 100 MHz) between the AVDD and DVDD supply domains to break ground-loop noise from the digital switching returning into the analog path. The OVDD output supply can be tied to AVDD in 3V systems, but a separate filtered supply is recommended when driving long output traces to keep digital switching noise out of the analog return path. Estimated input ripple should be kept below 5 mV p-p per the manufacturer's PSRR spec.

Drive the ENC+/- sampling clock with a low-jitter clock source such as the LTC6946-1 PLL or a clean CMOS oscillator through a balun. Total RMS jitter should be below 1 ps (10 Hz to 1 MHz integration bandwidth) to preserve SNR at 105 Msps. The internal sample-and-hold requires a 50% ±5% duty cycle on ENC - an asymmetric clock reduces SNR by 1-2 dB and degrades SFDR. Keep analog input traces short and matched (CH1+ to CH1- length match < 0.5 mm) and provide a stable common-mode voltage at the VCM pin through the recommended RC network to the analog inputs.

Do not leave the SENSE pin floating - tie it to REF for internal reference mode (1.5V) or to AVDD for external reference mode per the application note in the 2282fb datasheet. Avoid driving analog inputs outside the 0V-to-3V common-mode range or the ESD diodes will clamp and inject non-linear distortion. The CLKOUTA and CLKOUTB outputs are designed to drive the destination FPGA capture register directly; adding a series ferrite or resistor attenuates high-speed edge rates and causes data-correlated jitter. If only one channel is used, power down the second channel by tying the corresponding input to VCM to save 100 mW per the LTC2282 family datasheet.
