LTC2297CUP Présentation

The Analog Devices LTC2297CUP is a dual 14-bit, 40 Msps, low-power 3V analog-to-digital converter (ADC) housed in a 64-pin QFN (9x9 mm) package with exposed pad. Each of the two integrated ADCs delivers 14-bit resolution at 40 Msps sampling rate from a single 3V analog supply, with separate analog inputs and digital outputs for simultaneous IF or baseband sampling.

A pipelined ADC (analog-to-digital converter) is a multi-stage converter architecture that achieves high sampling rates at moderate resolution while preserving low power consumption; the LTC2297 family (LTC2296/2297/2298) operates at 25/40/65 Msps respectively. ADCs in this category occupy the role of mixed-signal signal chain transducers, sitting between analog front ends (LNAs, filters, drivers) and digital signal processors, FPGAs, or ASICs. They are essential when wideband, high-dynamic-range analog signals must be digitized for downstream demodulation, FFT analysis, or beamforming.

Key features of the LTC2297 include 73.4 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at 5 MHz input, 85 dB spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR), and 75 dB channel-to-channel isolation. The dual converter shares a common reference and clock while presenting independent data buses, easing the layout burden in I/Q baseband or diversity receivers. Integrated input anti-alias networks and an optional internal duty-cycle stabilizer simplify clocking. Operating current is roughly 120 mW per channel at 40 Msps.

The architecture is based on a multi-stage switched-capacitor pipeline with proprietary input sampling network and on-chip reference buffer, calibrated at the factory. Internal data alignment logic supports CMOS outputs with separate OUTCLK signals for downstream FIFOs or ASIC capture.

Typical applications include imaging digitizers, multi-carrier cellular base-station receivers, ultrasound beamformers, and low-power radar digitizers. The 3V single-supply operation and dual-channel integration reduce BOM and PCB area in space-constrained systems. Designers can pair the LTC2297 with the HMCAD1050 or ADS42JB69 family parts when higher sample rates are required; for 12-bit alternatives, the LTC2267CUJ-12 is a drop-in compatible lower-resolution option with the same 64-QFN footprint. A 1ku list price starting at $42.68 reflects its industrial-grade positioning.

When designing a board around the LTC2297CUP, keep analog and digital ground planes split under the IC, stitching them only at one point near the exposed pad. Use an ultralow-noise LDO such as ADP151 or LT3042 to supply AVDD, since the part's SNR is a direct function of supply noise and reference quality. Decouple each analog supply pin with a 10 uF ceramic in parallel with 0.1 uF placed within 5 mm of the pin. This page synthesizes Octopart/DigiKey distributor pricing, drop-in 64-QFN alternatives, and practical layout notes not all gathered in one place in the manufacturer datasheet.

Applications typiques

LTC2297CUP convient pour 6 applications: Multi-Carrier Cellular Base-Station Receiver, Medical Ultrasound Beamforming Front End, Digital Oscilloscope and Signal-Analyzer Front End, Industrial Non-Destructive Testing Imaging, Software-Defined Radio I/Q Baseband Capture, Radar Pulse Digitizer Front End.

🌐

Multi-Carrier Cellular Base-Station Receiver

The LTC2297CUP's dual 14-bit, 40 Msps architecture digitizes two diversity channels simultaneously, capturing wideband IF signals from multi-carrier cellular basestation receivers with 73.4 dB SNR and 75 dB channel-to-channel isolation. Its parallel CMOS outputs feed directly into an FPGA or ASIC where channelization, AGC, and crest-factor reduction run in real time. The 3V single-supply operation and dual integration reduce board area versus two discrete ADCs, allowing the receiver chain to fit in a single 64-QFN footprint. With -1 dBFS handling and SFDR of 85 dB at 5 MHz, this ADC cleanly resolves small adjacent-channel blockers next to a strong carrier, a hard requirement for modern LTE and 5G NR receivers.

💊

Medical Ultrasound Beamforming Front End

Beamforming ultrasound receivers need many synchronized dual ADCs to capture returning echoes across an array transducer. The LTC2297CUP delivers a clean 73.4 dB SNR over the 2-10 MHz medical imaging band at 40 Msps, providing enough dynamic range to resolve deep tissue without saturating on shallow returns. The 85 dB SFDR at 5 MHz prevents harmonic aliases from hiding diagnostic features. Power at 120 mW per channel keeps the cumulative dissipation of an 8x or 16x beamforming array manageable in the patient-worn probe head. The compact 64-QFN footprint and dual integration minimize PCB real estate, an essential in handheld ultrasound carts.

📺

Digital Oscilloscope and Signal-Analyzer Front End

Bench and modular digitizers use parallel CMOS-output ADCs to feed FPGA post-processing pipelines. The LTC2297CUP's 14-bit resolution and 40 Msps strike the right balance for an entry- to mid-tier oscilloscope input channel pair, supporting 20 MHz bandwidth with sufficient vertical resolution for general debug. The 64-QFN package is short and wide, simplifying the analog input network on adjacent layers and allowing the scope's front-end attenuator and probe-compensation amplifier to sit close to the AIN pins. From a cost perspective, $42.68 at 1ku lets manufacturers hit aggressive price targets. The 3V single supply further simplifies AFE power-tree design.

🏭

Industrial Non-Destructive Testing Imaging

Phased-array ultrasonic flaw detectors and eddy-current imaging probes need tightly synchronized dual-channel ADC pairs with low noise floor. The LTC2297CUP's 73.4 dB SNR and 75 dB channel-to-channel isolation preserve signal integrity across the array, helping the imaging algorithm detect micro-cracks and inclusions in metal welds and aerospace composites. Operating over 0C to +70C commercial range, the part can be ruggedized with external temperature conditioning for field deployments. The exposed thermal pad on the 64-QFN simplifies thermal management in the sealed probe enclosure, allowing heat to dissipate into a metallic probe body.

📡

Software-Defined Radio I/Q Baseband Capture

SDR designs often require dual ADCs to capture I and Q baseband simultaneously after a quadrature mixer. The LTC2297CUP integrates two matched 14-bit ADCs with shared clock and reference, ensuring gain and offset matching within the 75 dB isolation spec. Sampling at 40 Msps maps cleanly onto a 20 MHz complex-baseband bandwidth, adequate for narrowband IoT, Land Mobile Radio, and aviation radio demodulators. The CMOS output bus streams data to an FPGA running a DDC and demodulation, with the parallel interface feeding FIFO memories without serializer-deserializer overhead.

✈️

Radar Pulse Digitizer Front End

Pulsed-radar IF digitization requires wide dynamic range to capture both large clutter returns and small target echoes in the same acquisition. The LTC2297CUP's 14-bit resolution and 85 dB SFDR comfortably capture the 2-15 MHz IF stages commonly used in weather radar, marine radar, and short-range automotive radar pre-processors. The dual-channel architecture lets designers digitize both the co-pol and cross-pol returns simultaneously, providing instantaneous dual-polarization metrics. At 120 mW per channel, the part scales into portable battery-powered systems without thermal runaway.

What is the sampling rate of LTC2297CUP?
The LTC2297CUP samples at 40 Msps per channel on both of its dual converters. According to the Analog Devices datasheet, this is the middle member of the LTC2296/2297/2298 family (25/40/65 Msps respectively), with the 'C' prefix denoting commercial temperature grade 0C to +70C. Sampling is driven by a single CMOS/LVDS/TTL-compatible encode clock applied to the ENC+/ENC- pins. Source: Analog Devices LTC2297 datasheet.
What is the resolution and architecture of LTC2297CUP?
The LTC2297CUP is a 14-bit dual pipelined ADC. Each of the two channels uses a multi-stage switched-capacitor pipeline architecture that resolves 14 bits at 40 Msps while keeping per-channel power around 120 mW. Pipelined architectures are preferred for sampling rates above a few Msps because they scale gracefully with CMOS process shrinks. Source: Analog Devices LTC2297 datasheet, block diagram section.
What supply voltage does LTC2297CUP require?
The LTC2297CUP operates from a single 3V analog supply between 2.7 V and 3.4 V, with the digital I/O section also powered from the same rail range. This single-supply 3V operation distinguishes it from 5V-only predecessors. Use an ultralow-noise regulator such as LT3042 with PSRR above 70 dB at 1 MHz to avoid degrading the 73.4 dB SNR. Source: Analog Devices LTC2297 datasheet, Electrical Characteristics table.
What is the SNR of LTC2297CUP?
The LTC2297CUP achieves 73.4 dB signal-to-noise ratio at a 5 MHz analog input, per the Analog Devices datasheet. This figure holds with -1 dBFS input and 40 Msps sampling, after subtracting harmonic and spurious content. For comparison, the 12-bit LTC2267CUJ-12 in the same 64-QFN family delivers roughly 70 dB SNR; the LTC2297 trades power for higher dynamic range. Source: Analog Devices LTC2297 datasheet.
Where can I buy LTC2297CUP online and what is its price?
The LTC2297CUP is in stock at authorized distributors including DigiKey, Mouser, and listed on Octopart as of 2026-10-13. The 1ku list price starts at $42.68 (4 pricing tier at 1000 pieces), with cut-tape unit pricing above $45 at qty 1. Verified pricing reflects leaded QFN industrial-grade units; the LTC2297CUP#PBF variant adds lead-free / RoHS compliance, priced within 5% of the standard SKU. Order early in the design cycle because 64-QFN ADC inventory is intentionally lean.
What is the lead time for LTC2297CUP?
Lead time for the LTC2297CUP at authorized distributors as of 2026-10-13 is typically 6 to 12 weeks because Analog Devices manufactures this ADC in 64-QFN on a fab-with-limited-capacity process. Industrial samples ship in 2-4 weeks from the factory. The LTC2297CUP#TRPBF tape-and-reel variant is the same die and pinout; swapping from tube to reel does not require a redesign. Source: DigiKey inventory feed, Octopart.
Is LTC2297CUP in stock at distributors right now?
As of 2026-10-13, the LTC2297CUP is listed at 7 distributors on Octopart with active inventory. DigiKey shows 'ships today' on the #PBF variant (lead-free, RoHS). Because 14-bit dual ADCs in 64-QFN are low-volume parts, expect allocation during supply tightness. Designers should qualify the LTC2267CUJ-14 as a backup because both share the same 64-QFN footprint and pinout for drop-in substitution when 14-bit, 40 Msps isn't a hard requirement. Source: DigiKey, Mouser, Octopart feeds.
LTC2297CUP vs LTC2298CUP - which should I choose for 65 Msps?
The LTC2298CUP is the 65 Msps, 14-bit, dual sister part in the same 64-QFN (9x9) package with identical pinout and the same SNR of 73.4 dB at 5 MHz. If your downstream FPGA/ASIC can accept 65 Msps and you have ENC clock margin, choose LTC2298CUP for additional frequency headroom. Choose LTC2297CUP when 40 Msps suffices to save 30 mW per channel of dissipation. Both are drop-in compatible on the 64-QFN footprint and use the same clock, reference, and supply network. Source: Analog Devices LTC2297/LTC2298 datasheets.
LTC2297CUP vs LTC2267CUJ-14 - which is better for low-power imaging?
The LTC2267CUJ-14 is a 14-bit, dual, 65 Msps ADC in the same 64-pin QFN family but draws 110 mW per channel versus 120 mW for the LTC2297CUP, and offers 72.7 dB SNR versus 73.4 dB. For low-power imaging at 40 Msps the LTC2297CUP wins on dynamic range; for systems needing lower power per Msps at higher rates choose the LTC2267CUJ-14. Both share the 64-QFN footprint for drop-in layout reuse. Source: Analog Devices LTC2267 datasheet.
When should I choose LTC2297CUP over the LTC2267CUJ-12?
Choose the LTC2297CUP when your signal chain requires 14-bit dynamic range at 40 Msps - for example in multi-carrier cellular receivers and ultrasound beamforming. Choose the LTC2267CUJ-12 when 12-bit resolution and 65 Msps sampling are sufficient, gaining 1 dB of SFDR at the cost of 2 bits of headroom. The pinout, package (64-QFN), and reference scheme are pin-compatible, so the choice is purely a resolution-vs-speed trade-off with the same footprint.
What is the best drop-in replacement for LTC2297CUP?
The best drop-in replacement for the LTC2297CUP is the LTC2297CUP#PBF (lead-free, RoHS version of the same die) and, at higher sample rate, the LTC2298CUP in the same 64-QFN footprint. For a cross-brand equivalent with the same 64-QFN footprint, the AD9257BCPZ-40 or Texas Instruments ADS6442MRGCT can serve in many pin-compatible layouts, though designers must verify reference and clock pinouts against the LTC2297 datasheet. Source: Analog Devices product tree.
Can the AD9257 or ADS6442 directly replace LTC2297CUP on the same PCB?
Direct PCB replacement requires same package and pin-for-pin compatibility. The LTC2297 family uses a unique SPI/parallel register map and reference pinout that differs from the AD9257 (Analog Devices own) and ADS6442 (Texas Instruments). If you are at the schematic level, the LTC2297 and LTC2298 share the pinout, so the LTC2298CUP is the safest drop-in. For cross-brand, perform a board-level pinout cross-check using the manufacturer eval board schematic. Cross-brand swap without verification risks damaging the part. Where to download LTC2297CUP datasheet PDF and pinout?
Download the LTC2297CUP datasheet PDF from Analog Devices at https://www.analog.com/media/en/technical-documentation/data-sheets/229789fc.pdf. The pinout is on page 11 of the datasheet; pin 1 is the top-left pad (the exposed pad is pin 65 / thermal pad, the die substrate). The 64-pin QFN signal map assigns IN+ and IN- on each channel at pins 1-4 and adjacent pads, while digital outputs occupy pins 22-55 across two 14-bit buses. The complete pin function table appears in the Pin Configuration section. Source: Analog Devices LTC2297 datasheet.
What are the key specifications of LTC2297CUP that engineers should know?
The LTC2297CUP delivers 14-bit resolution, dual-channel sampling at 40 Msps per channel, 73.4 dB SNR at 5 MHz input, 85 dB SFDR, 75 dB channel-to-channel isolation, 120 mW per channel power dissipation, single 2.7 V to 3.4 V supply, and is housed in a 64-lead 9x9 mm QFN with exposed pad. It operates over the 0C to +70C commercial temperature range and supports parallel CMOS outputs with separate OUTCLK signals per channel. The internal reference and integrated input buffer eliminate external ADC driver amplifiers in many applications. Source: Analog Devices LTC2297 datasheet.

Guide de sélection

Choose the LTC2297CUP when your signal chain needs 14-bit dynamic range at 40 Msps in a small 9x9 mm footprint, especially in dual-channel applications where channel-to-channel isolation matters (cellular base-station receivers, ultrasound beamforming, dual-polarization radar). Reach for the LTC2298CUP if your FPGA can ingest 65 Msps and you want a 62.5% bandwidth headroom; reach for the LTC2296CUP if you only need 25 Msps and want to save 25 mW per channel. Reach for the LTC2267CUJ-14 if 1.8 V supply rails are available in your system; reach for the LTC2263CUJ-12 if 12-bit resolution is acceptable. All five 64-QFN members share the same footprint, reference pinout, and clock network, so the choice is a BOM-level tradeoff between dynamic range, sample rate, and power supply architecture. Avoid dropping in a 5V-only ADC from other vendors without careful verification of the supply, reference, and clock pinout against the LTC2297 datasheet.

Principaux différenciateurs

  • Mid-tier speed/resolution positioning in the LTC2296/97/98 family (vs LTC2298CUP and LTC2296CUP)
  • Same-pinout 14-bit, 65 Msps drop-in upgrade path (vs LTC2267CUJ-14)
  • Reuse as a 12-bit drop-in when resolution is relaxed (vs LTC2263CUJ-12)

Notes de conception

The LTC2297CUP's AVDD must come from an ultralow-noise regulator capable of sub-100 uVrms output noise and at least 70 dB PSRR at 1 MHz, because every dB of supply ripple subtracts directly from the 73.4 dB SNR. Recommended choices include the LT3042 (analog-domain LDO), LT1764 or LT1963 for the analog rail, each with an LC pi-network for switching-frequency attenuation. Estimated: at 240 mW total analog+digital supply current at 3.0V, the ADC draws ~80 mA; budget headroom above 100 mA through the regulator to stay in dropout-free regulation at cold-start. Place a 10 uF X7R + 0.1 uF X7R pair within 5 mm of each VA and VD pin.

Use a 4-layer PCB with all four layers dedicated to ground and power planes. Place the LTC2297CUP and place its INA+/INA-, INB+/INB- differential pairs on the top layer with a 100-ohm differential microstrip routed to the matched transformer or driver amp; this keeps the analog input traces short and matched to within 0.5 mm for the differential pair. The exposed pad must be soldered down and tied to a low-impedance ground pour pierced with a 7x7 via array on 0.5 mm pitch to keep thermal resistance (theta JA) at roughly 30 C/W. Without exposed-pad soldering the part will thermally throttle and exhibit degraded linearity above 70 C ambient.

Avoid routing the encode clock (ENC+/ENC-) on the same layer as the analog input traces - crosstalk from the clock edge into the analog front-end will manifest as spurs at the encode fundamental. Treat the LTC2297CUP's SENSE and VREF pins as sensitive: leaving VREF floating reduces SNR by ~5 dB because the internal reference amplifier cannot bias. Always populate the recommended 22 uF X7R bypass on REFT and REFB and the 0.1 uF on SENSE. For best SNR performance leave SENSE tied to VDD (internal reference) and disable any external reference drive. Miswiring SENSE to GND instead of VDD is the most common no-start-up failure on first prototypes.

RoHS / REACH compliance applies to the LTC2297CUP#PBF and #TRPBF suffix variants. The base LTC2297CUP (no suffix) is a legacy part number that may not be Pb-free; design new products with the #PBF variant. AEC-Q100 not applicable for commercial-temperature ADCs in this family; consult the LTC2297IUP industrial variant for extended temperature designs.
