MC908QC8CDTE Présentation
An 8-bit MCU is a microcontroller built around an 8-bit data path and CISC instruction set, designed for low cost, deterministic real-time behaviour, and minimal silicon area. The HC08 family from NXP (formerly Freescale) is a Von-Neumann-architecture 8-bit core descended from the Motorola M68HC11 line, and the QC sub-family is its low-pin-count, FLASH-based derivative. Within the broader taxonomy, HC08 sits under 8-bit microcontrollers -> microcontrollers -> microcontrollers & processors -> semiconductor ICs.
Key differentiating features include: 8KB in-system FLASH with security, an integrated 10-bit successive-approximation ADC with 10 input channels, an on-chip oscillator and PLL-less clock generator, low-voltage reset and low-power STOP/WAIT modes, and a wide 2.7 V-5.5 V operating range. The 16-pin TSSOP is the smallest pin-count HC08 Q-family package, ideal for space-constrained PCB layouts. Compared with larger HC08 Q-family members, this part offers the lowest pin count and FLASH density, traded off against no external bus and fewer I/O lines.
The MC908QC8CDTE uses a FLASH-based, von-Neumann memory map with a single program/data bus, simplifying firmware development and in-system reprogramming via the standard HC08 BDM interface. The 8 MHz bus clock at 5 V gives an instruction fetch of 125 ns, well within budget for interrupt-driven control loops at sub-millisecond response times.
Typical applications include small appliance control (washing machines, microwave ovens, induction cookers), HVAC actuators, BLDC/PMSM low-speed fans, automotive body modules (window lift, mirror control, lighting drivers), smart sensor front-ends, and consumer white goods. The 8KB FLASH is sufficient for state-machine control code with simple communication stacks.
When designing with this part, ensure the BDM (background debug mode) pins are accessible for in-circuit programming and debugging. Add a 100 nF decoupling capacitor close to each VDD/VSS pair, and respect the 2.7 V minimum VDD during FLASH programming to avoid erase/write errors.

Applications typiques
MC908QC8CDTE convient pour 6 applications: Small Appliance Control, HVAC Fan & Blower Control, Automotive Body Modules, Smart Sensor Front-End, Consumer White Goods, LED Lighting Controllers.
Small Appliance Control
The MC908QC8CDTE is well-suited for small-appliance controllers including microwave ovens, washing machines, induction cooktops, and rice cookers, where the 8KB FLASH is enough to encode state-machine control loops for relays, triacs, and sensor inputs. Its 10-bit ADC reads NTC temperature sensors and motor-current shunts for closed-loop regulation, while the SCI/UART drives LED displays and keypad scanning. Compared to a 32-bit Cortex-M0, this HC08 part costs roughly one-third at 1ku and consumes under 10 mA active, making BOM cost the deciding factor.
Recommandé
HVAC Fan & Blower Control
HVAC indoor-unit fan controllers benefit from the MC908QC8CDTE's 6-channel timer (PWM outputs) and 10-bit ADC for closed-loop speed control of low-voltage BLDC or AC shaded-pole fans. The 8 MHz CPU08 cycle budget is sufficient for PI control loops updated every 10 ms. With 14 GPIO, designers can drive triac firing, opto-isolated zero-cross detection, and I2C/SCI peripherals. Operating from -40C to +85C, this part handles cold-start fan electronics where cheaper 5V-only MCUs would fail.
Recommandé
Automotive Body Modules
The MC908QC8CDTE can serve in automotive body-electronics sub-modules such as window lift, mirror adjustment, seat-position memory, and interior lighting drivers, where its 8KB FLASH handles the state tables and the 10-bit ADC monitors motor current for stall detection. The -40C to +85C operating range matches AEC-Q100 Grade 3 requirements for non-safety cabin modules. Designers add external watchdog and load-dump protection; the HC08's low-voltage reset prevents FLASH corruption during cranking transients.
Recommandé
Smart Sensor Front-End
For IoT sensor edge nodes with simple wired interfaces, the MC908QC8CDTE provides an 8-bit processing core that aggregates multiple analog sensor channels through its 10-bit ADC and forwards the data over UART or SCI. The 384-byte RAM is enough for a rolling-average buffer on temperature, humidity, or pressure sensors, while the 8KB FLASH supports simple Modbus RTU slave stacks. This part competes effectively with Cortex-M0+ sensors in cost-sensitive industrial 4-20 mA loops.
Recommandé
Consumer White Goods
Refrigerators, dishwashers, and air purifiers deploy the MC908QC8CDTE as a low-cost auxiliary controller for door-sensing, water-valve timing, defrost cycles, and alarm-tone generation. The integrated SCI peripheral talks to the main inverter board or display panel, while the timer subsystem drives piezo buzzers and triac-controlled compressors. With TSSOP-16 footprint and lead-free finish, this part is drop-in compatible across multiple product SKUs, allowing OEMs to share PCBs across model variants.
Recommandé
LED Lighting Controllers
LED drivers and architectural lighting controllers use the MC908QC8CDTE to generate PWM dimming waveforms via the 6-channel timer, while the 10-bit ADC reads ambient-light sensors for daylight harvesting and feedback loops. The 8KB FLASH is enough for DMX-512 receive or DALI basic frame handling, with SCI/UART bridging to higher-level controllers. The 2.7 V-5.5 V supply range allows direct operation from 3.3 V or 5 V LED-driver rails.

Notes de conception
Add a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as possible to each VDD/VSS pair, and a bulk 10 uF tantalum or aluminum capacitor on the main 5 V or 3.3 V rail within 25 mm of the MCU. The HC08 core draws brief current spikes during FLASH writes; insufficient decoupling causes VDD droop and FLASH write errors. Per the Freescale HC08Q datasheet, VDD must remain above 2.7 V during programming cycles or the on-chip charge pump will fail.
Route the OSC1/OSC2 crystal traces as short and symmetric as possible, with the crystal and load capacitors within 5 mm of the MCU pins. Keep the crystal ground return separate from digital switching signals to prevent jitter. For best EMI performance, place a guard ring tied to analog ground around the crystal area. The BDM (background debug mode) pins must be accessible on the PCB - either as test-pad access or a dedicated header - for in-circuit firmware updates.
Do not exceed the absolute maximum VDD of 5.5 V; even brief over-voltage transients from poorly regulated supplies can permanently damage the FLASH charge pump. Always issue a clean STOP-mode entry before power-down, and use the on-chip low-voltage reset to hold the MCU in reset during under-voltage events. Do not rely on the ADC for signals above VDD+0.3 V - the analog multiplexer is not 5 V-tolerant on lower-voltage variants. For I/O lines driving inductive loads, add external flyback diodes.
When using the SCI/UART peripheral at high baud rates (above 57600), keep the TX/RX traces short and avoid routing them parallel to PWM outputs from the timer subsystem. The HC08 has no internal slew-rate control, so adding a 22-100 ohm series resistor on SCI lines near the connector can dampen ringing on long cables. For noise-sensitive analog ADC readings, average 4-16 samples in firmware to suppress 50/60 Hz mains pickup.
