MCF51AC128ACFUE Présentation
Key features include the V1 ColdFire core with single-cycle multiply-accumulate (MAC) instructions, an integrated analog chain with up to 16-channel 12-bit ADC, multiple timers including a 6-channel PWM, and communication peripherals covering SCI (UART), SPI, and I2C. The 50 MHz core and 128 KB Flash make it well-matched to industrial control, motor drive, and human-machine interface (HMI) applications that demand real-time deterministic performance.
The MCF51AC family is also notable for its 5V-tolerant I/O and on-chip voltage regulator, supporting 2.7V to 5.5V operation from a single rail. This simplifies power-tree design in 5V-dominated industrial systems. The wide operating range and integrated peripherals position the MCF51AC128ACFUE as a workhorse MCU for mid-range embedded designs.
Typical applications include industrial motor control (BLDC and stepper), smart metering, HVAC control, building automation, point-of-sale terminals, and medical instrumentation. The 12-bit ADC, PWM channels, and SCI/SPI interface are well-suited to closed-loop control loops where deterministic latency is required.
When designing with this MCU, plan oscillator and decoupling layout early: place a 100 nF decoupling cap adjacent to every VDD pin, and route the externally supplied RESET signal with a guard trace. The internal voltage regulator requires a bulk cap on the VREG pin per the manufacturer datasheet typical-application circuit.
The MCF51AC128ACFUE is approaching end-of-life per NXP lifecycle announcements. Engineers designing new platforms should consult the latest NXP PCN documents and evaluate the suggested replacement, the MCF51AC128CCFUE (the 'C' suffix denotes the latest silicon revision). Applications typiques
MCF51AC128ACFUE convient pour 6 applications: Industrial BLDC Motor Control, Smart Metering, HVAC Climate Control, Building Automation Controllers, Point-of-Sale Terminals, Medical Instrumentation (Non-Life-Critical).
Industrial BLDC Motor Control
The MCF51AC128ACFUE is well suited to industrial BLDC and PMSM motor control drives using its 50 MHz ColdFire V1 core with single-cycle MAC instructions for field-oriented control (FOC) firmware. The integrated 12-bit ADC samples phase currents, while the 6-channel PWM block drives a three-phase inverter with deterministic switching up to 50 MHz core clock. The 128 KB Flash holds FOC state machine, commutation tables, and fault-handling code; the wide 2.7-5.5V supply range supports 5V and 3.3V mixed-rail motor power boards. Engineers should confirm AEC-Q100 was not selected for this industrial-only drive.
Recommandé
Smart Metering
The MCF51AC128ACFUE drives single- and multi-phase smart electricity meters, gas meters, and water meters through its 12-bit ADC (for current/voltage sensing), multiple timers (for metrology calculation), and SCI/SPI/I2C peripherals (for PLC or wireless M-Bus communication modules). The 50 MHz ColdFire V1 core handles energy-calculation algorithms, while the 128 KB Flash stores metrology firmware, calibration constants, and DLMS/COSEM communication stacks. The wide 2.7-5.5 V supply range and integrated voltage regulator simplify designs powered directly from the meter's line-derived supply.
Recommandé
HVAC Climate Control
The MCF51AC128ACFUE is well-matched to residential and light-commercial HVAC controllers: the 12-bit ADC reads thermistor temperature sensors, the PWM block drives TRIAC-controlled blower fans and dampers, and the I2C peripheral connects to wall-mounted keypads and display modules. The 128 KB Flash supports zoning firmware, scheduling, and Modbus/FCU bus communication. Operating from -40C to +85C industrial range and 2.7-5.5 V supply, the part handles unconditioned 24 VAC-derived HVAC power rails with minimal external regulation.
Recommandé
Building Automation Controllers
Building automation controllers (BACnet/Modbus nodes, lighting controllers, occupancy hubs) use the MCF51AC128ACFUE to consolidate multiple communication interfaces (SCI, SPI, I2C), handle digital I/O scanning, and run control logic at 50 MHz ColdFire V1 determinism. The 128 KB Flash accommodates BACnet/Modbus stacks, scheduling, and OTA update handlers. The wide 2.7-5.5 V supply and -40C to +85C industrial temperature range qualify it for plenum-rated enclosures and unheated mechanical rooms.
Recommandé
Point-of-Sale Terminals
POS terminals use the MCF51AC128ACFUE to manage keypad scanning, thermal-printer control (via UART/SPI), Ethernet or GSM modem interfaces (via SPI-peripheral expansion), and secure PIN entry (via I2C cryptographic companion IC). The 32-bit ColdFire V1 core at 50 MHz handles protocol stack encryption and printer formatting simultaneously, while 128 KB Flash stores terminal firmware with multilingual string tables. The wide 2.7-5.5 V supply draws from regulated 5 V rails inside the POS chassis without additional conditioning.
Recommandé
Medical Instrumentation (Non-Life-Critical)
Non-life-critical medical instruments - including benchtop analyzers, laboratory pipette controllers, and patient monitors for ancillary telemetry - use the MCF51AC128ACFUE for ADC-based sensor readout, PWM-driven actuator control, and SCI-based data export to host PCs. The 50 MHz ColdFire V1 core handles real-time filtering, while the 128 KB Flash stores calibration constants and instrument parameters. Note the part is industrial-grade (not IEC 60601 rated); for direct-patient-contact devices, validate against IEC 60601 isolation and creepage requirements separately.

Notes de conception
The MCF51AC128ACFUE integrates an internal voltage regulator on the VREG pin (pin 43). Place a low-ESR bulk decoupling capacitor (typically 4.7 uF ceramic in parallel with 1 uF) as close to the VREG pin as possible. Without this capacitor the part will fail to start cleanly and may exhibit brown-out behavior under heavy load. Each VDD/VSS pair must have its own 100 nF decoupling capacitor on the same side of the PCB; never share capacitors between pins.
Route the external crystal traces (XTAL/EXTAL, pins 54-55) as short as possible with a guard trace tied to ground on both sides. Keep digital signals away from the crystal traces to prevent injection of switching noise into the oscillator. If using an external clock source, drive EXTAL with a CMOS-compatible clock and leave XTAL floating per datasheet typical application circuit.
Estimated: At a 50 MHz core frequency, switching I/O edges produce ground-bounce noise that can corrupt analog ADC readings. Place a 10 nF + 100 nF stacked decoupling pair adjacent to each VDDA/VSSA pair (pin 44/45), and route all analog input traces away from the PWM output traces. Implement a software median filter on ADC readings to reject residual switching noise.
Do not leave the RESET pin floating - it requires an external pull-up resistor to VDD (typically 10 kohm) plus the decoupling capacitor defined by the manufacturer datasheet typical application circuit. Floating RESET causes erratic behavior including spurious BDM entry. Also: the BKGD/MS pin (pin 59) serves dual purpose as background debug mode entry and mode select; a 4.7 kohm pull-up or pull-down resistor is required for normal operation.
