MPC17531AEVEL Présentation
A motor driver (also called an H-bridge driver or full-bridge driver) is a power-management semiconductor that switches current through a winding in either direction, allowing a DC motor, stepper phase, or voice-coil actuator to spin forward, reverse, brake, or coast. H-bridge drivers sit at the bottom of the motor-control hierarchy: microcontroller -> gate-driver logic -> H-bridge power stage -> motor. The MPC17531AEVEL collapses the gate-driver logic and the power stage into a single IC, removing external bootstrap diodes and level shifters that discrete designs require.
Key features include parallel MOSFET output stages with very low on-resistance (typically 0.5 ohm per FET, giving about 1 ohm Rds(on) per half-bridge), built-in shoot-through protection with internal dead-time generation, an enable input for PWM current chopping, and a sleep mode that drops quiescent current to a few microampere for battery standby. The part is specified for an operating junction temperature of -20 C to +150 C, suiting sealed handheld enclosures and industrial modules.
The MPC17531AEVEL uses a monolithic BiCMOS process that integrates analog charge-pump circuitry, gate-drive logic, and four power MOSFETs on one die. This integration eliminates the parasitic inductance and timing skew of discrete half-bridges, reducing EMI and improving the predictability of PWM edges at switching frequencies up to 200 kHz.
Typical applications include digital-camera zoom and focus motors, cell-phone vibrators and ringers, two-phase stepper drives for lens iris mechanisms, and small brushed DC fans. In each case the part replaces a discrete bridge with four MOSFETs, four gate resistors, a charge pump, and dead-time logic.
When designing with this IC, add 0.1 uF ceramic bypass capacitors directly across VM and VCC, and keep the motor leads short to contain inductive ringing. Always observe the 8.6 V absolute-maximum load rating - transients from a stalled motor can exceed the rail.

Applications typiques
MPC17531AEVEL convient pour 6 applications: Digital Camera Lens Drive, Cell Phone Vibrator / Ringer Motor, Two-Phase Bipolar Stepper Drive, Brushed DC Fan Control, Portable Medical Pump Drive, Robotics Hobby Servo Drive.
Digital Camera Lens Drive
The MPC17531AEVEL drives voice-coil autofocus, zoom, and iris actuators in compact digital cameras. Its 700 mA per channel and 2.0-8.6 V motor supply match typical NEMA-8 frame steppers and voice coils powered from a single-cell Li-ion rail. The 200 kHz PWM capability enables smooth microstepping and quiet current-chop control, while the 20-VMFP footprint occupies less than 25 mm^2 of PCB, leaving room for image sensors and image signal processors. The dual-bridge topology lets one IC control both focus and zoom simultaneously, reducing the BOM by one driver and four discrete MOSFETs.
Recommandé
Cell Phone Vibrator / Ringer Motor
The MPC17531AEVEL drives eccentric rotating mass (ERM) vibrator motors and piezo ringers in mobile phones from a 3.6-4.2 V Li-ion rail. Its 700 mA continuous rating covers typical ERM peak currents, and the dual-bridge configuration supports either one bidirectional vibrator or two independent buzzers with separate enable lines. The integrated shoot-through protection prevents accidental cross-conduction during the abrupt start-stop transitions that ERM motors generate, while the sub-microampere sleep current preserves battery standby time between alerts.
Recommandé
Two-Phase Bipolar Stepper Drive
The MPC17531AEVEL controls one bipolar stepper motor by configuring each H-bridge as a single phase driver, with current set by an external PWM duty cycle and sense resistor (or by the IC's internal chopping when available). At 700 mA continuous, the part suits NEMA-8 and small NEMA-11 frame sizes used in camera iris mechanisms, medical pumps, and small valve actuators. The 2.0-8.6 V VM range accepts 3.3 V, 5 V, and 6 V motor rails directly from a USB or battery source, simplifying the power tree.
Recommandé
Brushed DC Fan Control
The MPC17531AEVEL drives small 5 V or 6 V brushed DC fans in networking equipment, set-top boxes, and industrial enclosures where variable speed control and reverse-rotation capability are needed. A 25 kHz PWM on the enable input adjusts fan RPM while the H-bridge handles direction reversal for cleaning cycles. The part's 0.5 ohm Rds(on) keeps conduction loss under 250 mW at full load, which is critical in sealed enclosures where ambient temperatures already push junction temperature toward the 150 C limit.
Recommandé
Portable Medical Pump Drive
The MPC17531AEVEL drives small peristaltic and syringe-pump motors in portable medical devices such as insulin pumps and ambulatory infusion systems. Battery-powered operation from a 3.6 V Li-ion rail requires the 2.7-3.6 V logic supply and 2.0-8.6 V motor supply range that the part supports directly. The exposed thermal pad and 38 C/W junction-to-ambient resistance enable continuous operation at 500 mA without a heatsink, while the integrated shoot-through protection prevents dangerous reverse-pumping during fault conditions.
Recommandé
Robotics Hobby Servo Drive
The MPC17531AEVEL drives small brushed DC gearmotors used in hobby robotics, educational kits, and tabletop automation projects. Its 700 mA per channel comfortably handles 6 V and 7.2 V gearmotors in the 100-300 mA continuous range, with headroom for stall transients. The dual-bridge topology enables differential-drive (two-wheel) robot bases from a single IC, while the 3.0 V-compatible CMOS inputs interface directly with microcontrollers such as the NXP Kinetis or STM32 Blue Pill without level shifters.

Notes de conception
Estimated: at 700 mA continuous per channel and VM = 7.2 V into a stalled motor, conduction loss per bridge is roughly (I^2 * Rds(on)) = (0.7^2 * 1.0) = 0.49 W, giving 0.98 W total. With the 20-VMFP theta_JA of approximately 38 C/W on a 1 oz copper pour, junction temperature rises about 37 C above ambient. At 25 C ambient this leaves ~88 C margin to the 150 C limit, but in a sealed enclosure above 60 C ambient the part will derate or require a larger copper pour.
Place a 0.1 uF X7R ceramic bypass capacitor directly across VM (pin 6) and VCC (pin 7), within 3 mm of the package body. Add a 10 uF tantalum or polymer bulk capacitor at the VM input to absorb motor back-EMF. Inductive transients from the motor can exceed the 8.6 V absolute maximum on VM if no TVS clamp is present; an 8.2 V SMA TVS from VM to GND is recommended for brushed DC motor loads.
Keep motor traces short and wide (>= 0.5 mm per ampere) to limit parasitic inductance. Route logic inputs (IN1-IN4, EN) away from the motor traces, with a ground guard trace if possible, because dV/dt from the H-bridge can inject noise into the CMOS inputs. The exposed thermal pad (pin 21) MUST be soldered to a copper pour of at least 100 mm^2 to meet the 38 C/W thermal rating.
Do not drive the motor with PWM faster than 200 kHz or shoot-through protection may mis-trigger. Do not float unused input pins - tie IN1-IN4 to GND through 10 kohm resistors if the microcontroller pins are high-impedance during reset. Do not exceed 8.6 V on VM, even momentarily; inductive kick from a stalled motor can exceed the absolute maximum and permanently damage the IC.
