MPX2200D Présentation
A piezoresistive pressure sensor is a MEMS device in which four silicon strain gauges arranged in a Wheatstone bridge change resistance when mechanical pressure deflects a thin silicon diaphragm. The differential configuration (suffix "D") measures the pressure difference between two ports, rather than the absolute or gauge value relative to a sealed vacuum reference. Pressure sensors occupy the transducer layer of any measurement signal chain, sitting between the physical process variable and the analog signal-conditioning front end.
The MPX2200D delivers a 0 mV to 40 mV differential output at 200 kPa (29.01 PSI) full-scale pressure when excited with a 10 V supply, with on-chip temperature compensation over 0C to +85C, ±0.25% linearity, and ±1% maximum pressure hysteresis. The single-port side and dual-port side process connections accept standard 3.45 mm (0.136 in) barbed pressure fittings, while the through-hole 4-SIP module (Case 344-15) is compatible with PCB-mount assembly.
Typical applications include industrial process control (hydraulic and pneumatic pressure monitoring), medical instrumentation (respiratory and infusion pumps), HVAC duct sensing, altimeters and barometric instruments, and consumer appliance water-level detection. The differential topology is particularly useful where bidirectional flow or vacuum-to-positive pressure measurement is required.
When designing with the MPX2200D, an instrumentation amplifier with low offset drift (such as the INA125 or AD620) is typically used to amplify the 40 mV full-scale output to a useful ADC input range. Add a common-mode RC filter at the sensor output to attenuate EMI from motor or relay switching in industrial environments.

Applications typiques
MPX2200D convient pour 6 applications: Industrial Process Control Pressure Monitoring, Medical Respiratory and Infusion Pressure Monitoring, HVAC Duct and Filter Pressure Drop Sensing, Altimeter and Barometric Instrumentation, Automotive Manifold and Vacuum Sensing, Consumer Appliance Water Level and Pump Pressure Sensing.
Industrial Process Control Pressure Monitoring
The MPX2200D fits industrial process control applications including hydraulic and pneumatic line pressure monitoring, where its 200 kPa (29.01 PSI) full-scale differential range covers the typical operating envelope of fluid power systems. The 0-40 mV output is amplified by an INA125 instrumentation amplifier with gain of 125 to produce a 0-5 V signal suitable for 12-bit ADC input. Unlike a switch-only pressure sensor, the MPX2200D's linear analog output enables closed-loop PID control of valves and pumps. The on-chip temperature compensation from 0C to +85C eliminates the need for external thermistor linearization in factory-floor environments, and the ±0.25% linearity is sufficient for most process-control accuracy budgets.
Recommandé
Medical Respiratory and Infusion Pressure Monitoring
The MPX2200D is well matched to medical respiratory equipment, ventilator pressure circuits, and infusion pump monitoring where small differential pressures in the 0-200 kPa range must be measured with high accuracy. The silicon piezoresistive technology provides the long-term stability required for medical device regulatory submissions, and the on-chip temperature compensation simplifies recalibration schedules. Connected to a ventilator air circuit, the differential output across a flow restrictor yields breath-rate and tidal-volume estimates. The 4-SIP through-hole package is also easily cleaned and sterilized for medical-grade assemblies, unlike surface-mount-only competitors that complicate end-of-line cleaning processes.
Recommandé
HVAC Duct and Filter Pressure Drop Sensing
The MPX2200D's differential topology and 200 kPa range are well suited to HVAC duct static pressure measurement and filter loading monitoring. Installed across an air filter element, the differential pressure rises as the filter loads, signaling maintenance alerts. The 0-40 mV output drives directly into a 4-20 mA current-loop transmitter built around an XTR105 or RCV420 for industrial building automation. The -40C to +125C operating temperature handles rooftop unit environments, and the 3.45 mm barbed port accepts standard pneumatic tubing used in HVAC installation. Compared to lower-cost ceramic capacitive sensors, the MPX2200D piezoresistive design offers better long-term drift performance at the cost of higher current draw.
Recommandé
Altimeter and Barometric Instrumentation
The MPX2200D in absolute or gauge variants provides accurate barometric pressure measurements for altimeters, weather stations, and drone altitude sensors. With a 200 kPa full-scale range covering sea-level atmospheric pressure (~101.325 kPa) plus substantial headroom, the sensor yields ~40 mV at standard atmospheric conditions, easily amplified to a 0-5 V ADC range for altimetry calculations. The on-chip temperature compensation reduces altitude drift over varying ambient conditions, critical for outdoor weather station deployments. The 4-SIP through-hole package is also more rugged in exposed outdoor enclosures than equivalent surface-mount MEMS pressure sensors, which are vulnerable to conformal coating ingress.
Recommandé
Automotive Manifold and Vacuum Sensing
The MPX2200D's 200 kPa differential range and robust through-hole 4-SIP package make it suitable for automotive manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensing, vacuum boost measurement, and fuel-pressure monitoring. The differential topology is particularly useful for measuring vacuum-to-positive pressure transitions in brake booster and crankcase ventilation systems. The automotive-grade operating temperature range of -40C to +125C handles under-hood thermal conditions, and the silicon piezoresistive technology provides the long-term reliability required for vehicle lifetime specifications. Note that the standard MPX2200D is not AEC-Q100 qualified - for AEC-Q100 qualified automotive variants, designers should consult STMicroelectronics' MPX automotive sensor portfolio directly.
Recommandé
Consumer Appliance Water Level and Pump Pressure Sensing
The MPX2200D fits consumer appliance applications such as washing machine water-level sensing, dishwasher pump pressure monitoring, and water-heater system pressure detection. The 200 kPa differential range covers typical domestic water-supply pressures (50-150 kPa), and the small 40 mV output is easily conditioned by a low-cost op-amp front end. The on-chip temperature compensation handles hot-water inlet temperature variations, and the 4-SIP package withstands the mechanical stress of appliance vibration better than smaller surface-mount alternatives. Compared to electromechanical pressure switches, the MPX2200D's analog output enables soft-control features like variable-fill washing machine cycles and adaptive dishwasher pump curves.

Notes de conception
The MPX2200D's 40 mV full-scale output is highly susceptible to common-mode noise from motors, relays, and switching power supplies. Route the sensor output traces as a tightly-coupled differential pair directly to the instrumentation amplifier inputs, and add a 10 kohm resistor plus 10 nF capacitor RC filter at each input to limit EMI bandwidth. Avoid ground loops by using a single-point ground at the instrumentation amplifier reference pin rather than daisy-chaining the sensor ground with the load ground.
The 4-SIP through-hole package requires plated through-holes on the PCB with at least 0.8 mm pad diameter for reliable wave soldering. Mount the sensor vertically with the barbed ports facing upward to avoid stress on the package from horizontal tubing connections. Provide mechanical strain relief (cable tie or P-clip) within 50 mm of the barbed port to prevent vibration fatigue cracking the silicon diaphragm. According to STMicroelectronics' mounting guidelines, do not expose the sensor to ultrasonic cleaning or aqueous PCB wash that could force fluid into the port.
The MPX2200D requires a clean, low-noise 10 V supply to achieve its specified 40 mV full-scale output. A low-dropout regulator such as the LP2985 or TPS7A47 with additional LC filtering (10 uH inductor plus 10 uF ceramic capacitor) is recommended to reject switching noise from upstream 24 V or 12 V rails. Do not use PWM-driven switching regulators directly without additional filtering, as the 100 kHz+ switching frequency will inject common-mode noise into the bridge output and corrupt the measurement. The 6 mA typical supply current allows battery operation but a continuous draw budget should be considered in power-constrained designs.
Do not apply pressure exceeding the device's maximum overload rating, or permanent diaphragm damage will result. Avoid exposing the sensor to corrosive media (strong acids, bases, solvents) - the silicon diaphragm and epoxy package are not rated for chemical compatibility beyond typical air, water, and oil applications. For oxygen or medical gas applications, specify the medical-grade variant directly with STMicroelectronics. Do not block the second port on the differential version - both ports must see active pressure or atmospheric reference to avoid sensor drift.
