MPX4115A Présentation
An absolute pressure sensor is a MEMS-based transducer whose output is referenced to a sealed internal vacuum rather than to ambient, so it directly measures the local atmospheric or system absolute pressure regardless of weather or altitude variation. Within the sensor taxonomy, the MPX4115A sits below general environmental sensors and alongside gauge and differential pressure sensors, but it is distinguished by its integrated bipolar op-amp signal chain, thin-film resistor network, and factory calibration that together eliminate the need for external analog front-end components. This integration places it within the broader category of analog-output ICs that convert a physical stimulus into a ready-to-read voltage.
Key features of the MPX4115A include high-level analog output (0.2 V to 4.8 V) directly readable by an MCU ADC, calibrated accuracy of ±1.5% over 0°C to +85°C, on-chip temperature compensation from -40°C to +125°C, and media-resistant packaging variants within the same MPxx4115 family. The device is specifically designed for dry air applications; media compatibility for other gases should be confirmed with the manufacturer, as water, oils, and corrosive chemicals can damage the silicon sensing element.
The MPX4115A uses a piezoresistive silicon diaphragm whose strain gauge resistance changes with applied pressure. Freescale/NXP's bipolar op-amp and laser-trimmed thin-film resistor network convert that resistance change into a high-level linear voltage. The factory trim calibrates the output transfer function VOUT = VS * (0.01059 * P - 0.1518) ± error across the 15-115 kPa range, eliminating device-to-device spread and removing the need for system-level software compensation.
Typical applications include automotive engine control manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensing, weather station barometric pressure measurement, altitude estimation for handheld GPS and outdoor navigation, HVAC and appliance pressure monitoring, and industrial pneumatic system monitoring. The wide temperature range and small unibody package suit both automotive and industrial environments. When designing with this sensor, add RC low-pass filtering on the output to reject high-frequency electrical noise and protect the device port from condensation, dust, and direct water exposure.

Applications typiques
MPX4115A convient pour 7 applications: Automotive Engine MAP Sensing, Barometric Altimeter / Weather Station, HVAC and Appliance Pressure Monitoring, Industrial Pneumatic System Monitoring, Drone Altitude Hold and Position Estimation, Medical Respiratory and CPAP Pressure Monitoring, Datalogger / Environmental IoT Sensing Node.
Automotive Engine MAP Sensing
The MPX4115A's 15-115 kPa absolute range covers naturally-aspirated and mildly-boosted manifold pressures (sub-1.7 bar absolute), and the on-chip bipolar op-amp outputs a 0.2-4.8 V signal directly readable by the engine ECU's 5 V ADC. According to the NXP datasheet, its ±1.5% factory calibration from 0°C to +85°C removes per-unit software compensation, simplifying production calibration routines. The -40°C to +125°C operating window and dry-air specification are aligned with under-hood automotive environments, where intake-manifold pressure drives fuel injection timing.
Recommandé
Barometric Altimeter / Weather Station
The MPX4115A's 15-115 kPa span captures the full atmospheric pressure range from deep valleys (about 95 kPa at 500 m altitude) to mountain peaks (about 70 kPa at 3000 m), and the analog output can be sampled by any MCU ADC for altitude calculation using the international barometric formula. Per the NXP datasheet, the on-chip temperature compensation holds accuracy across the wide thermal swings encountered in outdoor weather stations. Typical end products include handheld GPS units, hiking watches, and amateur weather stations needing an economical, calibrated pressure element.
Recommandé
HVAC and Appliance Pressure Monitoring
HVAC refrigerant-side pressures in residential air-conditioning systems commonly fall within 200-1000 kPa, but in low-pressure zones (return air plenums, building pressure sensors, and clean-room differential monitoring) the MPX4115A's 0-115 kPa range remains highly relevant. Its 6-SIP unibody package mounts directly onto a housing bulkhead, the ratiometric 0.2-4.8 V output drives a 5 V MCU ADC without amplification, and the dry-air-compatible packaging suits conditioned indoor air. Reference designs in HVAC controllers typically pair the MPX4115A with a low-noise LDO like the TPS7A30 to protect measurement stability against switching regulator ripple.
Recommandé
Industrial Pneumatic System Monitoring
Many low-pressure pneumatic systems (vortex blowers, vacuum hold-down fixtures, and instrument air lines) operate between 15-110 kPa, exactly within the MPX4115A's calibrated range. The factory-calibrated analog output drives analog or digital panel meters, and the 6-SIP unibody survives industrial vibration better than SMT pressure ports. According to the NXP datasheet, the dry-air media specification is non-negotiable for reliable long-term operation; oil-carrying compressors must use moisture and particulate filtration upstream of the sensor port.
Recommandé
Drone Altitude Hold and Position Estimation
Multicopter altitude-hold algorithms rely on absolute pressure as the simplest fusion input, and the MPX4115A's 15-115 kPa range covers ground level to typical maximum drone operating altitude (around 4 km = 60 kPa). The on-chip signal conditioning allows the analog output to be sampled by the flight controller's existing ADC without adding an instrumentation amplifier, and the calibrated ±1.5% accuracy supports altitude resolution better than 1 meter at sea level with standard pressure conversion. The unibody package withstands vibration and moderate moisture exposure typical of hobbyist UAV mounts.
Recommandé
Medical Respiratory and CPAP Pressure Monitoring
In CPAP/BiPAP machines, low-pressure sensors monitor mask pressure against the 0-20 cm H2O range, and the MPX4115A's 15-115 kPa span covers the negative-pressure and flow-monitoring taps commonly used in these designs. The factory-trimmed 0.2-4.8 V analog output feeds the motor-control MCU directly, while the -40°C to +125°C operating range endures warmed-air streams inside the humidifier chamber. Important: for medical device production, additional regulatory validation (IEC 60601) is required, and the MPX4115A must not see liquid media - always use a barrier membrane upstream of the sensing port.
Recommandé
Datalogger / Environmental IoT Sensing Node
IoT and datalogger designs reading atmospheric pressure for weather monitoring and indoor air-quality estimation benefit from the MPX4115A's low power, calibrated analog output and small footprint. The sensor pairs naturally with low-power MCUs sampling once per second to once per minute, and the dry-air specification suits indoor office and outdoor enclosures. The unibody SIP package through-hole mounts on low-cost single-layer PCBs, ideal for sub-$20 BOM consumer electronics and smart-home weather stations distributed across deployments.

Notes de conception
The MPX4115A media compatibility is restricted to dry air and non-corrosive gases. According to the NXP datasheet, exposing the sensing port to water, oil, fuel, or corrosive gases will degrade long-term reliability and accuracy. Always install media filtration (PTFE membrane or sintered bronze) in front of the port for outdoor or industrial use, and route tubing to isolate the sensor from humidifier chambers in CPAP designs.
Place a 0.1 µF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the VCC pin (Pin 1), with a short ground return directly to the IC's GND pin (Pin 2). Add a series RC low-pass filter (typically 1 kΩ and 100 nF) on the VOUT pin to suppress high-frequency electrical noise from the analog readout without limiting the sensor's thermal response. Keep analog signal traces away from switching regulator and motor drive traces by at least 3 mm to minimize coupling.
The MPX4115A output is ratiometric to its 5.1 V supply, so use a low-noise LDO rather than a switching regulator to power it. A TPS7A4701 or TPS7A3001 in series with a 12 V or 5 V system rail provides under 5 µVrms ripple and outstanding PSRR at 1 kHz; with a switching pre-regulator, the ratiometric errors can couple directly into your pressure reading. Decouple the LDO with a 10 µF ceramic plus a 0.1 µF ceramic in parallel per the LDO datasheet.
Estimated: to resolve 0.1 kPa pressure steps over the 100 kPa span, the MCU ADC needs at least 10-bit (1000-step) resolution. A 12-bit ADC gives 0.024 kPa per LSB, and a 16-bit ADC gives 0.0015 kPa per LSB. Sample the output at 1 kHz or higher if you intend to add software filtering; the sensor's bandwidth is well above 1 kHz, but the package and tubing will dominate the actual response in real systems.
