PIC12HV752-E/SN Présentation

The Microchip PIC12HV752-E/SN is an 8-bit PIC12-family flash microcontroller with integrated shunt voltage regulator, 1.75KB (1K x 14) of self-read/write program memory, and 64 bytes of data RAM, housed in an 8-pin SOIC (SN) package. The device runs up to 20MHz instruction execution (5 MIPS) from an internal 8MHz oscillator, with a wide operating voltage range that accommodates high-voltage bus applications thanks to its built-in 5V shunt regulator on the HV variant.

A microcontroller is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, program memory, data memory, and peripherals onto one die. The PIC12HV752 belongs to Microchip's PIC12F mid-range 8-bit RISC family, characterized by a compact 35-instruction set, deterministic single-cycle execution (except branches), and aggressive peripheral integration in 8-pin packages. PIC microcontrollers are a subset of microcontrollers -> RISC microcontrollers -> CMOS microcontrollers -> integrated circuits -> semiconductors. The 'HV' suffix denotes the high-voltage shunt regulator variant, while the 'F' variant (PIC12F752) operates from a standard external supply.

Key features include 6 I/O pins, two 20ns high-speed analog comparators, one Capture/Compare/PWM (CCP) module, a 4-channel 8-bit ADC with voltage reference, two 8-bit timers, one 16-bit timer, and an enhanced USART. The integrated 5V shunt regulator allows the HV variant to be powered directly from a 2V-5V bus without an external regulator, simplifying power design for bias-supply applications.

Architecturally, the PIC12HV752 uses a Harvard RISC core with separate program and data buses, enabling single-cycle instruction execution and deterministic interrupt latency. The internal 8MHz oscillator can be tuned or replaced with an external clock source, and the in-circuit serial programming (ICSP) interface allows firmware updates without removing the device from the board. The 14-bit instruction word and 8-bit data path are characteristic of Microchip's mid-range PIC architecture, balancing code density and execution efficiency.

Typical applications include LED lighting control, battery chargers, smart sensors, and industrial bias supplies where the integrated HV regulator eliminates an external LDO. It also fits low-cost motor control, fan controllers, and capacitive-touch human interface designs using the high-speed comparators.

When designing with this part, allocate one pin for ICSP and consider decoupling for the shunt regulator that biases the internal 5V rail. The 64-byte RAM and 1.75KB flash limit the firmware footprint, so optimize for the 35-instruction mid-range core rather than migrating from larger PIC architectures.

PIC12HV752-E/SN vs PIC12F752-E/SN - which is better?
The PIC12HV752 includes an integrated 5V shunt voltage regulator allowing operation from a 2-5V bus without an external LDO, while the PIC12F752 requires an external regulated 1.8-5.5V supply. For applications where a high-voltage bus is already present (e.g., 12V or 24V industrial rails), the HV variant eliminates a regulator stage. For battery or low-voltage designs, the F variant is simpler. Both share the same 8-pin SOIC footprint.
When should I choose PIC12HV752-E/SN over PIC12F752-E/SN?
Choose PIC12HV752-E/SN when your system has a high-voltage supply rail (2-5V bus) and you want to skip an external voltage regulator. Choose PIC12F752-E/SN when you have an already-regulated 1.8-5.5V supply, a battery, or want maximum operating voltage headroom for the MCU core. Both parts share the same SOIC-8 footprint, enabling layout reuse between designs.
What is the best drop-in replacement for PIC12HV752-E/SN?
The PIC12F752-E/SN is the closest drop-in replacement: same PIC12 mid-range core, 1.75 KB flash, 64 bytes RAM, 6 I/O, and the same 8-pin SOIC footprint. The only difference is the HV variant integrates a 5V shunt regulator while the F variant requires an external regulated supply. Other drop-in SOIC-8 variants include the PIC12HV752-I/SN (industrial temp grade) and PIC12HV752-E/P (PDIP package).
Can PIC12F752-E/SN replace PIC12HV752-E/SN?
Yes, PIC12F752-E/SN is pin-compatible in the SOIC-8 footprint, but you must provide an external regulated 1.8-5.5V supply to the VDD pin because the F variant lacks the integrated HV shunt regulator. If your board has only a high-voltage bus and no external LDO, the swap will not power up correctly. For battery or already-regulated designs, the F variant is a clean drop-in.

Guide de sélection

Choose PIC12HV752-E/SN when your design operates from a 2-5V unregulated bus and you want to eliminate an external LDO. The integrated HV shunt regulator saves BOM cost and PCB area in industrial 24V-bus systems, LED lighting, and appliance control. For battery-powered or already-regulated designs, choose PIC12F752-E/SN instead, since the F variant drops the HV regulator and accepts 1.8-5.5V directly. For through-hole prototyping, choose PIC12HV752-E/P (PDIP-8). For surface-mount with thermal pad, choose PIC12HV752-E/MF (DFN-8). For lower-temperature applications (consumer, office), the I-suffix industrial variants save a few cents. All variants share the same PIC12 mid-range core and 1.75KB flash, so firmware is portable across the family.

Notes de conception

The PIC12HV752-E/SN integrates a 5V shunt regulator that handles input voltages from 2V to 5V. Connect the HV input directly to the bus voltage through a current-limiting resistor; the internal shunt regulates the VDD rail to 5V. Calculate the resistor using R = (Vbus - 5V) / Iload, where Iload includes MCU supply plus any external VDD loads. Add a 100nF decoupling capacitor close to the VDD pin (pin 8) and a 10uF bulk capacitor on the HV input.

Place the HV shunt current-limiting resistor within 5mm of pin 8 to minimize parasitic inductance on the HV bus. Route the VDD trace as a star from the IC pin to all decoupling capacitors. For ICSP programming, route the ICSPCLK (pin 5) and ICSPDAT (pin 6) traces with no series components; if isolation is required, use jumpers rather than resistors to preserve signal integrity during programming.

Do not exceed the maximum HV input current of approximately 50mA - calculate resistor values carefully to limit shunt current under all bus voltage conditions. The MCLR pin (pin 3) is active-low and must be pulled high through a 10k resistor for normal operation; leaving MCLR floating causes erratic resets. The 20ns comparators require the CVREF module to be configured before use, or they will read random values.

When using the high-speed comparators for zero-current detection in PFC or sync-rectifier circuits, keep comparator input traces short (<10mm) and shield them from switching nodes with a ground pour. The 20ns response time is fast enough for kHz-range switching but not MHz; do not use for sub-microsecond detection without external amplification. Add 10k series resistors on comparator inputs if the source impedance exceeds 1k to limit peak input current.
