PIC16F87T-E/ML Présentation
A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, non-volatile program memory, RAM, EEPROM, timers, serial peripherals, and digital I/O on one die. The PIC architecture uses a RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) Harvard-style design where program and data buses are separate, allowing simultaneous instruction fetch and data access. Within Microchip's portfolio, PIC16 sits between PIC10/12/14 (lower pin count) and PIC18 (higher performance, 16-bit wide instructions), targeting battery-powered and cost-sensitive embedded applications through low-power NanoWatt sleep modes.
Key features include 35 single-word instructions that simplify coding, hardware USART, MSSP for SPI/I2C, capture/compare/PWM modules, 256 bytes of EEPROM, two 8-bit timers plus one 16-bit timer, a 10-bit multi-channel ADC, nano-power sleep current, and an internal oscillator option that eliminates the external crystal in many designs. The 28-QFN exposed pad lowers thermal resistance and enables compact board layouts for sensor hubs, white-goods controls, and handheld instruments.
Typical applications include consumer white goods, low-end remote controls, sensor signal conditioning, battery-powered instrumentation, and small industrial control nodes where deterministic real-time response and low sleep current matter more than raw CPU throughput.
When designing with this part, prioritize single-rail 5 V supplies with decoupling capacitors of at least 0.1uF adjacent to every VDD pin. For in-circuit serial programming (ICSP) leave the ICSP pins accessible; leaving MCLR unbonded is a common PCB layout mistake that blocks in-field firmware updates. This page consolidates distributor pricing, drop-in VQFN-28 alternatives, and practical design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet.

Applications typiques
PIC16F87T-E/ML convient pour 6 applications: Consumer White Goods Control, Handheld Battery Sensor Hub, Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning, Low-end IR Remote Control, Automotive Interior LED Driver, PIC-based Educational / Hobbyist Projects.
Consumer White Goods Control
The PIC16F87T-E/ML suits microwave, washing-machine, and dishwasher control boards where deterministic 8-bit RISC response, PWM, and a 10-bit ADC drive TRIAC-driven loads and temperature probes. Its 7 KB flash and 256-byte EEPROM cover the typical 5-10 KB state-machine code base for user-interface handling and sensor reads; NanoWatt sleep below 1 uA lets standby power stay compliant with energy-star targets while the 28-QFN package fits compact mainboards.
Recommandé
Handheld Battery Sensor Hub
The PIC16F87T-E/ML is well suited to battery-powered sensor pods (gas detectors, BLE beacon front-ends, HVAC thermostats) where 20 MHz PicoC compute and sub-1 uA sleep current dominate BOM cost. Its internal oscillator removes the external crystal, the 28-QFN exposed pad lands cleanly on a 25 mm coin-cell carrier, and the integrated 10-bit ADC plus UART/SPI/I2C peripherals stream data to a companion radio SoC with minimal firmware overhead.
Recommandé
Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning
For 4-20 mA loop transmitters, resistive-bridge conditioning, and low-side switch IO, the PIC16F87T-E/ML's 10-bit ADC, PWM, and E-grade (-40C to +125C) industrial temperature qualification combine to deliver reliable measurements in factory-floor enclosures. The 35-instruction PIC16 RISC ISA keeps latency under one PWM period for closed-loop control, and the 28-QFN exposed pad keeps junction temperatures below 100C at 20 MHz full-load operation.
Recommandé
Low-end IR Remote Control
In IR/RF remote controllers and wall switches, the PIC16F87T-E/ML handles button scanning, IR encoding, and battery-voltage telemetry with enough MIPS for protocols such as RC5, NEC, and proprietary OOK modulations. The 7 KB flash stores lookup tables for multi-vendor consumer-TV codes; sleep-current drawn in single-digit microamps lets a single CR2032 cell survive 5+ years of typical use.
Recommandé
Automotive Interior LED Driver
Ambient-lighting, vanity-mirror backlight, and rear-cargo lamp LED drivers benefit from the PIC16F87T-E/ML's E-grade temperature range, integrated PWM channels, and compact QFN-28 footprint. Linear or buck current regulation with on-chip PWM (8- or 16-bit resolution) drives LED strings at 100 mA per channel with smooth dimming; the EEPROM stores calibration constants for off-the-shelf LED bin variation.
Recommandé
PIC-based Educational / Hobbyist Projects
The PIC16F87T-E/ML maps well to maker and university labs that teach 8-bit MCU fundamentals with MPLAB X and XC8 compilers. The 28-QFN exposes enough peripherals (USART, MSSP, PWM, ADC) for full curricula, and the QFN package rewards students on fine-pitch soldering practice; the same silicon with PIC16F88 firmware demonstrates upgrade paths without changing the development board footprint.

Notes de conception
Decouple every VDD pin of the PIC16F87T-E/ML with a 0.1 uF ceramic capacitor placed within 5 mm of the pin; add a single 10 uF bulk capacitor at the board entry. Operate the MCU within the datasheet-specified VDD range; values outside the spec can trigger undefined brown-out behaviour and EEPROM write errors. For battery-powered designs, route the MCU into Sleep mode with all peripherals disabled to reach the NanoWatt-level idle current published by Microchip.
Solder the exposed thermal pad of the 28-QFN to a generous copper pour. Estimated: with 6 x 6 mm QFN and a 1 oz copper pour on top/bottom layers with vias, theta_JA is on the order of 30-40 C/W. At +125C ambient and 20 MHz full-load operation, that gives a 20-40C temperature rise above ambient, keeping the junction below the datasheet maximum with no additional heatsink.
Do not accidentally configure the I2C and SPI pins for the wrong alternate function before the firmware disables the analog-mode register (ANSEL on newer revisions). Leaving MCLR floating causes intermittent resets; tie it to VDD through a 10 kohm resistor with a 100 nF cap if RC reset is desired, or tie it directly to VDD for always-on operation. Always reserve the ICSP pins (PGC/PGD) on test points or unpopulated headers so firmware can be updated without reworking the PCB.
