PIC16LF15386T-I/PT Présentation
An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, program memory, data RAM, and peripherals (timers, ADC, communication ports, PWM) on one die. MCUs are the smallest members of the embedded processor hierarchy (above: 16-bit MCUs and 32-bit MCUs). The 'L' prefix in PIC16LF15386 denotes the wide-voltage 1.8V-3.6V variant, allowing direct operation from a single Li-ion cell or two AA cells without an additional boost converter.
Key features include 28KB Flash, 2KB SRAM, 32MHz operation, four 10-bit PWMs with complementary outputs, a 10-bit ADC with computation (ADC2), two 5-bit/10-bit DACs, two comparators, Configurable Logic Cells (CLCx4), a Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG), and a numerically controlled oscillator (NCO). Communication includes two EUSART, two I2C/SPI, and LIN support. On-chip peripherals handle tasks such as sensor-signal conditioning and LED control without CPU intervention, freeing the core for application logic.
Typical applications include low-power IoT sensor nodes, battery-powered consumer devices, automotive body and lighting subsystems (LIN slaves), and human-interface controls. The XLP idle current of <30 nA (typical with RTC) is foundational for products that must run for years on a single battery.
When designing with this part, plan I/O budgeting first - 44 of the 48 pins are user I/O on the TQFP-48 package, leaving out four pins for power, ground, MCLR, and programming. Pick CIPs over software loops where response time and determinism matter, and follow MPLAB X IDE pin-mapping for trace/debug.

Applications typiques
PIC16LF15386T-I/PT convient pour 7 applications: Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node, Automotive LIN Bus Slave Body Module, Human-Machine Interface (HMI) Control Panel, Low-Power Wearable Fitness Device, Industrial Sensor Transmitter (4-20 mA / HART), Solar-Powered Wireless Environmental Monitor, Small DC Motor / Fan Speed Controller.
Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node
The PIC16LF15386T-I/PT is well suited to battery-powered IoT sensor nodes because its <30 nA XLP sleep current and 32 MHz processing let the MCU wake only briefly to sample, condition, and transmit. Its ADC2 with computation (averaging, oversampling, threshold compare) handles sensor fusion in hardware without waking the core for every sample, while the 4 CLC blocks and NCO generate precise timing for low-duty-cycle LoRa or sub-GHz OOK transmissions without an external RTC. The 1.8-3.6V supply range supports direct Li-ion or 2x AA operation. The 28 KB Flash accommodates Bluetooth Low Energy stack overlays or LoRaWAN MAC state machines in a typical industrial sensor node, with the 2 KB SRAM providing FIFO buffers for the radio interface.
Recommandé
Automotive LIN Bus Slave Body Module
The PIC16LF15386T-I/PT serves as an automotive LIN bus slave for body-electronics modules such as door locks, mirror controls, or lighting nodes. Its two EUSARTs implement LIN 2.1 slave operation with hardware auto-baud and break detection, and its 32 MHz core provides headroom for SAE J2602-style enhanced LIN protocols. The integrated 10-bit ADC, two comparators, and four PWMs with complementary outputs allow direct drive of LED arrays or motor H-bridges, while 28 KB Flash accommodates the LIN state machine plus diagnostics. The -40 C to +85 C industrial grade covers most underhood and cabin environments; for full -40 to +125 C AEC-Q100 automotive, use the automotive-qualified variant in the same family. The TQFP-48 footprint supports standard in-line connector alignments in body-control ECUs.

Human-Machine Interface (HMI) Control Panel
The PIC16LF15386T-I/PT is an effective HMI controller for white-goods, appliances, and small industrial control panels that combine LED status, capacitive touch, and a serial display. Its four 10-bit PWMs drive LED brightness with hardware fading, while 28 KB Flash stores 7-segment font tables and beep-pattern libraries. The integrated CLC blocks implement button-matrix debounce and rotary-encoder quadrature in hardware, offloading the core and lowering interrupt latency. Two EUSARTs connect to an external Bluetooth or Wi-Fi module for mobile-app control, and the 2 KB SRAM keeps TX/RX ring buffers and a small display refresh buffer. The wide 1.8-3.6V supply rail tolerates direct 3.3V operation from a switching regulator without additional LDO hardware.
Recommandé
Low-Power Wearable Fitness Device
Wearables benefit from the PIC16LF15386T-I/PT ultra-low-power design. Its 30 nA typical sleep current keeps idle draw negligible for heart-rate monitors and step-counters that wake only a few times per second. The on-chip 10-bit ADC2 with hardware averaging samples optical PPG sensors directly, and the CLC blocks can implement step-event hysteresis logic without waking the CPU. The 32 MHz core processes motion-fusion algorithms and Bluetooth preambles within narrow duty cycles, while the 2 KB SRAM accommodates ring buffers for the motion engine. The 28 KB Flash holds BLE stack overlays and a small OLED font library, and the integrated DAC drives haptic-feedback buzzers through a buffer.
Recommandé
Industrial Sensor Transmitter (4-20 mA / HART)
The PIC16LF15386T-I/PT can drive a 4-20 mA industrial sensor transmitter loop with HART modulation in firmware, leveraging its 10-bit DAC and PWM channels to generate the loop current while the CLC blocks handle HART 1200/2200 Hz FSK shaping. Its 32 MHz core and 28 KB Flash hold the HART stack plus IEC 60751 calibration coefficients for RTD or thermocouple inputs. The two comparators interface to the HART receive path, and two EUSARTs allow simultaneous HART modulation and diagnostic UART output. The wide supply range supports loop-powered transmitters directly off the 4-20 mA loop residual voltage.

Solar-Powered Wireless Environmental Monitor
Solar-powered environmental monitors use the PIC16LF15386T-I/PT for extreme energy efficiency. Its <30 nA XLP sleep current lets the MCU spend >99 percent of its time off between samples, harvesting tiny amounts of charge from small photovoltaic cells. The on-chip ADC2 with hardware-accumulated averaging reads solar-cell voltage, soil-moisture probes, and temperature sensors in burst mode, while the 32 MHz core processes daily averages and drives LoRa or Sigfox transmission via UART. The 28 KB Flash stores solar-irradiance calibration tables for the day-night profile, and 2 KB SRAM buffers 24-hour data histograms. The 1.8 V minimum supply operates directly from the super-cap or Li-ion cell without boost.
Recommandé
Small DC Motor / Fan Speed Controller
The PIC16LF15386T-I/PT is ideal for closed-loop DC fan, pump, or small motor control thanks to its 4 10-bit PWM channels with complementary outputs and dead-band control (via CWG). The 32 MHz core executes PI loops at 10-50 kHz rates while still leaving CPU bandwidth for communication, while the integrated comparators feed back-EMF or tachometer signals for sensorless rotor position detection. The two EUSARTs handle RS-485 fieldbus communication for industrial fan arrays, and 2 KB SRAM holds PID state. The 28 KB Flash stores motor-startup profiles and fault-recovery routines, and the wide supply range powers directly from 3.3V fan rails.

Notes de conception
For battery-powered designs, the PIC16LF15386T-I/PT must enter SLEEP (not IDLE) to achieve sub-uA consumption; IDLE keeps peripherals running. The Microchip PIC16LF153xx datasheet recommends 'doze' mode for sensor sampling and full SLEEP for radio standby. Add a 100 nF decoupling cap as close as possible to VDD pin 20 and a 10 uF bulk cap on the same rail to suppress radio transient dips.
Route AVSS and AVSS on star-ground topology, keeping analog grounds separate from digital grounds until they join at the bulk cap negative terminal. Place the 4.7 uF + 100 nF cap pair next to the VDD/VSS pins (20 and 19) to provide clean supply for the ADC. The TQFP-48 has a thermal pad underneath - connect it to ground for mechanical stability even though this device has no exposed pad.
Do not exceed VDD = 3.6V or apply reverse polarity; both latch-up the MCU. Configure the PPS (Peripheral Pin Select) locks after firmware verify - the device defaults allow all pins, but locked bits prevent accidental re-mapping. Note: the 'T' suffix is the tape-and-reel suffix only; it does NOT change the device die, so the same datasheet applies.
For accurate ADC readings, the analog input traces should be short and guarded by a digital ground track on the side away from switching nodes. The MCLR pin (pin 47) should have its 10k pull-up close to the MCU and a 100 nF cap to VSS - never tie MCLR directly to VDD without the cap, as transients can falsely reset the device.
