PIC16LF18325-I/ST Présentation

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF18325-I/ST is a low-power 8-bit PIC16 microcontroller with 14KB Flash, 1KB SRAM, and a 32MHz enhanced mid-range core, housed in a 14-pin TSSOP (ST) package rated for the industrial -40C to +85C temperature range. It operates from a wide 1.8V to 3.6V supply and integrates 256B EEPROM, a 10-bit ADC with computation, two I2C/SPI/UART, and Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) such as Configurable Logic Cells (CLC), Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG), Numerically Controlled Oscillator (NCO), and Peripheral Pin Select (PPS) for software-driven pin remapping.

An 8-bit PIC microcontroller (MCU) is a Harvard-architecture CMOS processor that integrates Flash program memory, SRAM, EEPROM, digital timers, and analog peripherals onto a single die. PIC microcontrollers sit in the broader hierarchy: 8-bit MCU -> microcontroller -> embedded controller -> semiconductor IC. The PIC16F1xxx family uses the enhanced mid-range core that adds a wider instruction set (49 instructions), a 16-level hardware stack, and CIP blocks versus the legacy baseline and mid-range cores, while remaining code-compatible with traditional PIC16 code, easing migration from PIC16F182x and PIC16F1847 designs.

Key features of the PIC16LF18325 include eXtreme Low Power (XLP) technology with sub-microampere sleep currents (typical 60 nA in sleep with RTC), four 16-bit timers, two each of I2C, SPI, and UART peripherals, a 10-bit ADC with computation, a 5-bit DAC, and four Configurable Logic Cells. The 32MHz internal oscillator eliminates an external crystal in many designs. PPS allows software remapping of digital peripheral functions to most I/O pins, easing PCB layout in tight designs and allowing the same firmware to support multiple board revisions.

This PIC16LF18325-I/ST variant uses 14-pin TSSOP (ST) packaging (industrial -40C to +85C). Other ordering codes in the family cover PDIP-14, SOIC-14 (SL), and 16-pin UQFN and VQFN. The LF prefix denotes the low-voltage, low-power process technology optimized for battery-powered designs. The PIC16F18325 (F) variant uses a wider 2.3V-5.5V supply range and is otherwise electrically equivalent for code development.

Typical applications include IoT sensor nodes, battery-powered remotes, low-power wearables, home automation endpoints, small consumer appliances, and sensor hub modules. The integrated CIPs (CLC, CWG, NCO) allow replacing external logic gates, comparators, and oscillator ICs with on-chip hardware, reducing BOM and PCB area, while XLP sleep currents below 1 uA extend coin-cell battery life to years.

When designing with this device, allocate a 0.1 uF X7R 10V decoupling capacitor within a few millimeters of the VDD pin, route ICSP signals (ICSPCLK/ICSPDAT) to a dedicated 5-pin programming header, and verify the MCLR line has a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD; if unused, MCLR must be tied high (cannot be left floating) for normal operation. Brown-out Reset (BOR) and the Windowed Watchdog Timer (WWDT) should both be enabled in configuration words for safety-critical firmware.

Applications typiques

PIC16LF18325-I/ST convient pour 6 applications: Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node, Home Automation Endpoints, Wearable Health / Fitness Devices, Low-Power Wireless Remote Controls, Small Consumer Appliance Controllers, Industrial Sensor Hubs and Modbus Nodes.

🧩

Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node

The PIC16LF18325-I/ST is purpose-built for battery-powered IoT sensor nodes where 1.8V-3.6V operation and sub-microampere sleep currents extend battery life to years. The XLP technology delivers 60 nA typical sleep current with WDT, while the integrated 10-bit ADC with computation can wake the CPU only when a meaningful sensor delta occurs, eliminating continuous polling. The 32 MHz enhanced mid-range core gives 8 MIPS for local edge processing of temperature, humidity, or motion data, while the 14 KB Flash holds application code, calibration tables, and a small LoRa or Sub-GHz protocol stack. The CLC and NCO Core Independent Peripherals can run in sleep mode to generate wake-up pulses, count events, or modulate IR signals without the CPU, dramatically lowering average power compared to software loops on legacy PIC16 mid-range parts.

🏭

Home Automation Endpoints

The PIC16LF18325-I/ST is well-suited for home automation endpoints such as battery-powered wireless switches, occupancy sensors, motorized blinds, and door/window contacts. Its 12 GPIO pins (in TSSOP-14) plus PPS (Peripheral Pin Select) let one firmware image support multiple board revisions without ICSP changes, and the same MCU can act as UART bridge, I2C sensor aggregator, or PWM LED controller by remapping peripherals at runtime. The two UART, two I2C, and two SPI interfaces support concurrent communication with a Sub-GHz radio, an environmental sensor, and an external EEPROM for log storage. The 32 MHz CPU plus 1 KB SRAM comfortably drives BLE / Zigbee / LoRa protocol stacks sized for endpoint nodes. Brown-out Reset and Windowed Watchdog Timer are essential safety features for always-on mains-powered gateway peripherals.

📱

Wearable Health / Fitness Devices

The PIC16LF18325-I/ST targets wearable health and fitness devices such as heart-rate straps, smart watches, and continuous glucose monitor pendants. The LF process supports 1.8V operation directly from a single Li-ion cell with no boost converter, while XLP sleep currents below 1 uA preserve battery during standby days. The 32 MHz core can run on-demand DSP routines for heart-rate variability (HRV) analysis or pedometer algorithms in <10 ms, then return to sleep, keeping average current low. The 10-bit ADC with computation handles bioimpedance and optical PPG (photoplethysmogram) front-end sampling at low duty cycle. PPS allows swapping UART to SPI to free pins for a low-power display driver or haptic feedback motor, while the 1 KB SRAM holds a 1-second circular buffer of 100 Hz sensor data without external memory.

🎧

Low-Power Wireless Remote Controls

The PIC16LF18325-I/ST is ideal for low-power wireless remote controls, IR/RF transmitters, BLE beacons, and key fobs. Its 1.8-3.6V VDD range runs directly from 2xAA alkaline or a CR2032 coin cell, while CWG (Complementary Waveform Generator) and NCO (Numerically Controlled Oscillator) Core Independent Peripherals generate precise IR carrier frequencies (38 kHz, 40 kHz, 56 kHz) and Sub-GHz modulation without CPU intervention. The PPS module remaps UART or SPI to any GPIO, allowing a single PCB layout to support 433 MHz, 868 MHz, 915 MHz, and 2.4 GHz radio modules. The 4 KB of unused Flash space stores multiple button-mapping profiles, and EEPROM retains pairing codes through battery replacement. With 60 nA sleep, a CR2032 coin cell lasts 5+ years in a typical TV/BLE remote control duty cycle.

🏭

Small Consumer Appliance Controllers

The PIC16LF18325-I/ST is well-matched to small consumer appliance controllers, including electric toothbrushes, coffee machines, garment steamers, and personal care devices. Its 12 GPIO and 4 16-bit timers drive motor control (DC brushed, BLDC sensorless) and triac-fired heater loads, while the 10-bit ADC reads temperature from NTC thermistors or PTC heaters with hardware computation (averaging, oversampling). CLC cells implement custom logic glue, replacing discrete 74HC gates for safety interlocks - if temperature exceeds threshold, CLC directly disables PWM output. The 14 KB Flash holds USB HID, capacitive touch, and BLE firmware, and PPS reuses the same MCU across multiple SKUs by remapping button pins at runtime. Industrial -40C to +85C rating supports garage and outdoor appliance environments.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Hubs and Modbus Nodes

The PIC16LF18325-I/ST serves as a compact industrial sensor hub or Modbus RTU node in factory automation, building automation, and HVAC control panels. Its two UART ports enable simultaneous RS-485 Modbus master and a debug console, while the two I2C buses connect multiple temperature, pressure, and humidity sensors. The 10-bit ADC with computation handles 4-20 mA loop current sensing and 0-10V analog input scaling, and the 5-bit DAC generates reference voltages for bridge excitation. PPS allows routing UART, SPI, or PWM to alternate pins, simplifying the same PCB to support different connector pinouts. The industrial -40C to +85C temperature rating is qualified for factory floor and outdoor cabinet environments, and the 32 MHz core processes Modbus RTU packets with sub-millisecond latency at 115,200 baud.

Notes de conception

Estimated: at VDD=3.3V and active CPU at 32 MHz, the PIC16LF18325-I/ST typically draws 2-3 mA. In sleep mode with WDT enabled the XLP current drops to 60 nA typical, supporting multi-year battery life on a CR2032 coin cell. Use the IDLE mode (CPU off, peripherals running) to achieve ~1 mA when only ADC + CLC are active. Disable unused peripherals via PMDx registers to minimize active current.

Place a 0.1 uF X7R 10V decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of the VDD pin (pin 1) and a 10 uF bulk capacitor on the same VDD net for switching loads. Keep ICSPCLK/ICSPDAT (RA4/RA5) traces short and route them to a 5-pin ICSP header with no series resistors. If the design uses PPS, reserve the ICSP pins to avoid contention during in-circuit programming. Ground the thermal pad (if used in the UQFN variant); the TSSOP-14 has no exposed pad.

The MCLR pin (RA3/MCLR) MUST be tied to VDD through a 10 kohm pull-up resistor in normal operation; leaving it floating prevents the device from starting up reliably. Enable Brown-out Reset (BOR) in configuration words with a threshold appropriate for your supply (e.g., BORV = 1 for 2.5V minimum). If using the Windowed Watchdog Timer, configure the window carefully to avoid spurious resets during long interrupt service routines.

Route the external crystal traces (if used instead of the internal HFINTOSC) symmetrically and within 5 mm of the OSC1/OSC2 pins, with a ground guard ring. For ADC accuracy, separate the analog AVdd/AVss pins (in larger packages) and add a ferrite bead between digital and analog VDD. Keep PWM outputs (CWG) and high-speed switching signals away from analog input traces to minimize coupling. Use a star ground topology with a single-point connection between digital and analog ground planes.
