PIC18F2455-I/SP Présentation

The Microchip Technology PIC18F2455-I/SP is an 8-bit PIC18 microcontroller with integrated Full-Speed USB 2.0, 24 KB of Flash program memory and 2 KB of RAM, packaged in a 28-pin SPDIP through-hole format. It operates from 4.2 V to 5.5 V, supports oscillator frequencies up to 48 MHz and delivers up to 10 MIPS of CPU throughput. The integrated nanoWatt technology reduces active and sleep current consumption for battery-powered and energy-sensitive designs.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, program and data memory, peripherals and I/O onto one IC. The PIC18 family uses a Harvard-architecture RISC core with 16-bit instruction words and 8-bit data paths, optimized for deterministic interrupt response and compact code. Within the broader hierarchy, the PIC18F2455 sits in the Microchip 8-bit PIC microcontroller line, positioned between baseline PIC10/12/16 parts and the 16-bit dsPIC/PIC24 family. Its USB 2.0 Full-Speed peripheral makes it a common bridge between embedded logic and PC hosts.

Key features include 24 KB (12K x 16) of self-programmable Flash, 2 KB of RAM, 256 bytes of EEPROM, a 10-bit ADC with up to 13 input channels, two 8-bit and one 16-bit timers, two PWM modules and a 25 mA source/sink capability per I/O pin. The USB 2.0 Full-Speed transceiver supports 12 Mbit/s operation without an external crystal on some configurations, and three serial ports (USB, I²C and SPI up to 10 Mbit/s, plus EUSART for LIN) provide flexible connectivity.

The CPU uses a modified Harvard architecture with hardware multiplier and a 31-level hardware stack, executing one instruction per four oscillator cycles. Integrated peripherals are mapped through a SFR-based register map, and interrupts are prioritized through a two-level scheme with shadow registers to reduce context-restore overhead. The nanoWatt power-management block supports multiple idle and sleep modes for ultra-low standby draw.

Typical applications include low-cost USB peripherals, HID-class devices such as custom input devices and game controllers, industrial sensor interfaces with USB diagnostics, automotive LIN slave nodes and embedded data-acquisition front-ends. The wide operating range also suits 5 V industrial backplanes and battery chargers using the ADC for current/voltage monitoring.

When designing with this part, ensure the VUSB pin is connected to VDD through an internal 3.3 V regulator when USB is active, and follow Microchip's recommended 27 pF capacitor on the VUSB node. Program the CONFIG registers correctly for the chosen oscillator mode (HS, XT or INTIO) before any code can run.

Applications typiques

PIC18F2455-I/SP convient pour 6 applications: USB HID Peripheral (Keyboard, Mouse, Custom Input), Industrial Sensor to USB Data Logger, Automotive LIN Slave Node, Custom USB Audio Class Device, Educational Microcontroller Development Board, Battery Charger Monitor with USB Diagnostics.

🧩

USB HID Peripheral (Keyboard, Mouse, Custom Input)

The PIC18F2455-I/SP is a workhorse for USB HID-class peripherals because its on-chip USB 2.0 Full-Speed transceiver and SIE remove the need for an external PHY. The 24 KB Flash comfortably hosts USB stack, HID report descriptors and application code; the 2 KB RAM handles HID report buffers. Operating at 48 MHz (10 MIPS), the device services USB 1 ms polling frames with margin for descriptor parsing, key matrix scanning and debounce logic. The 25 mA source/sink per I/O pin directly drives LED indicators, optocouplers or small relays without external drivers. The integrated nanoWatt idle mode lets USB suspend draw remain below the USB 2.0 specification of 2.5 mA. Typical HID projects complete the USB chapter of the datasheet in a few weeks.

🏭

Industrial Sensor to USB Data Logger

In industrial sensor-to-USB data loggers the PIC18F2455-I/SP acquires analog signals through its 10-bit ADC with up to 13 input channels, then streams records over USB to a host PC. The 48 MHz clock supports sample rates above 100 kSPS aggregate while leaving CPU bandwidth for buffering, time-stamping and USB transfers. Its 4.2 V to 5.5 V supply range matches 5 V industrial backplanes and 24 V systems with simple linear regulation. The 25 mA I/O drive connects directly to 4 mA to 20 mA loop transmitters through a series resistor. The industrial -40C to +85C temperature grade and the nanoWatt sleep modes make the part attractive for always-on edge loggers on factory floors.

🚗

Automotive LIN Slave Node

The PIC18F2455-I/SP implements LIN slave nodes through its EUSART with hardware LIN support, including automatic baud-rate synchronization on the break field. The 24 KB Flash fits LIN 2.0 application plus diagnostic layer code, and the 2 KB RAM handles LIN frames and signal buffers. The 25 mA per-pin I/O can drive LIN transceivers and wake inputs directly, reducing external component count. The integrated USB peripheral is invaluable for production-line diagnostics and firmware update tools without adding a second MCU. Industrial temperature grade -40C to +85C covers most under-hood cabin applications; under-hood environments need the -40C to +125C variant instead.

🎧

Custom USB Audio Class Device

Audio-class USB devices such as microphones, headsets or USB speakers leverage the PIC18F2455-I/SP's USB Full-Speed peripheral plus PWM modules to generate 16-bit audio at 48 kHz sample rate. The 48 MHz clock yields 10 MIPS, enough for the USB isochronous pipe plus a software audio pipeline. The 10-bit ADC can serve as the analog mic input, while PWM outputs feed a class-D output filter. The internal 3.3 V regulator on VUSB simplifies analog supply noise isolation. The 24 KB Flash stores USB Audio class 1.0 descriptors and the audio control state machine. For true 16-bit audio quality, pair with an external codec through the SPI peripheral running at 10 Mbit/s.

🖥️

Educational Microcontroller Development Board

The PIC18F2455-I/SP is a popular core for educational and hobbyist development boards thanks to its USB bootloader, free MPLAB X IDE and XC8 compiler. The 28-pin SPDIP is breadboard-friendly with 0.1-inch pin pitch, and the 25 I/O pins expose ADC, PWM, I2C and SPI for student projects. The integrated USB removes the need for an external programmer once a bootloader is flashed, and Microchip's PICkit programmers slot directly into ICSP headers. The industrial temperature rating is overkill for classroom use but reassures hobbyists building enclosures that may run warm. Comprehensive datasheet chapters ease the learning curve from assembly-level examples to C-based USB stack implementation.

⚡

Battery Charger Monitor with USB Diagnostics

Battery charger monitors benefit from the PIC18F2455-I/SP's 10-bit ADC to sense charge current and battery voltage while reporting status over USB to a host. The 24 KB Flash runs state-of-charge algorithms, and the 2 KB RAM stores recent charging history. The nanoWatt sleep modes let the monitor run from the battery for years in standby; the 48 MHz core wakes only for active charging cycles. The wide 4.2 V to 5.5 V supply supports 5 V USB sources and 6 V lead-acid adapters. The 25 mA I/O sink/source drives optocouplers or solid-state relays to switch charger stages without buffer transistors.

Notes de conception

Connect the VUSB pin to VDD with a 27 nF (or 220 nF per datasheet errata) bypass capacitor to enable the internal 3.3 V USB transceiver regulator. Without this capacitor, the USB peripheral will not enumerate. Bulk decoupling of 100 nF ceramic plus 10 uF bulk close to both VDD pins (pin 11 and pin 28) is required; place the bulk capacitor on the same PCB layer with minimal trace length.

Keep the D+ and D- USB traces as a 90-ohm differential pair with matched length; avoid splitting the pair around components. The 27 nF VUSB capacitor must return to the same ground reference as the USB shield/connector. Use a ground plane on the layer immediately below the USB traces; do not route digital signals beneath the USB differential pair.

Configure the CONFIG1L CONFIG1H and CONFIG2L CONFIG2H registers for the correct oscillator mode (HS for high-frequency crystal, XT for low-frequency crystal, INTIO for internal oscillator) before any user code executes. Failing to do so leaves the CPU without a clock source and prevents USB enumeration. Also ensure that CONFIG4L bit CPD is cleared (or set per design intent) so code-protect does not block ICSP debugging unintentionally.

Estimated: at maximum CPU load (10 MIPS) on a 28-SPDIP package the thermal dissipation is roughly 100 mW, so the part can be used without explicit thermal management in room-temperature environments. Industrial -40C to +85C designs should still confirm worst-case ambient plus 50% current margin on the 25 mA per-pin load. For sealed enclosures, derate the supply voltage above 5.0 V to keep junction temperature under 125C.
