PIC18F47Q43-I/P Présentation

The Microchip Technology PIC18F47Q43-I/P is an 8-bit PIC® XLP™ microcontroller with 128 KB Flash, 8 KB SRAM, and 1 KB EEPROM, running at up to 64 MHz, housed in a 40-pin PDIP through-hole package. The -I suffix denotes the industrial -40C to +85C temperature range and the /P suffix denotes the PDIP-40 package.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer containing a CPU, non-volatile program memory (Flash), volatile working memory (SRAM), EEPROM for data retention, and a rich set of on-chip peripherals. The PIC18F47Q43 belongs to Microchip's enhanced 8-bit PIC18 family, which fits in the hierarchy: PIC18 -> 8-bit MCU -> microcontroller -> embedded computing IC -> semiconductor. XLP™ (eXtreme Low Power) is Microchip's branding for nanoWatt technology that enables deep sleep currents down to the nanoampere range.

Key features of this device include a 12-bit ADC with Computation (ADCC) supporting capacitive touch via CVD, a 5-bit DAC, three comparators, two 10-bit PWMs and three 16-bit dual PWMs, six DMA controllers, configurable logic cells (CLCs), complementary waveform generators (CWG), zero-cross detect (ZCD), a windowed watchdog timer (WWDT), and SCAN/CRC hardware acceleration. Five UARTs (one LIN/DMX/DALI-capable), two SPI, two I2C, and a 16-bit timer complement the peripheral mix.

The PIC18-Q43 architecture separates the CPU bus from the peripheral bus, allowing DMA-driven peripheral-to-peripheral and peripheral-to-memory transfers without CPU intervention. This is well suited to real-time control loops in motor control, lighting, and power conversion where deterministic timing is required. The functional safety (FuSa) features target IEC 61508 SIL capable applications.

Typical applications for this part include industrial sensor signal conditioning, LED lighting controllers with smooth dimming, small BLDC/PMSM motor controllers, capacitive touch user interfaces, building automation nodes, and low-power IoT edge nodes. The wide peripheral set reduces external component count and BOM cost.

When designing with this MCU, allocate the 40 pins carefully: many peripherals are remappable via PPS (Peripheral Pin Select), but only a subset of pins support PPS output routing. Decouple VDD/VSS pairs with 100 nF ceramic capacitors placed within 5 mm of each pin pair, and provide an analog AVSS/AVDD pair for the ADC/DAC.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in pin-compatible alternatives, and practical design notes that are not found in the manufacturer datasheet, giving procurement and design engineers a single decision-ready reference.

Applications typiques

PIC18F47Q43-I/P convient pour 6 applications: Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning, LED Lighting Controller with Smooth Dimming, Small BLDC / PMSM Motor Controller, Capacitive Touch User Interface, Building Automation Node, Low-Power IoT Edge Sensor Node.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning

The PIC18F47Q43-I/P is a strong fit for industrial 4-20 mA loop transmitters, RTD/thermocouple front-ends, and bridge sensor digitizers because its 12-bit ADCC provides hardware averaging, oversampling, and threshold comparison that offload the CPU. With six DMA controllers and CLCs, the device can sample multiple analog channels autonomously while the CPU remains in sleep, dramatically reducing system noise and power. The 64 MHz core closes digital filter loops in microseconds and the 1.8-5.5 V VDD range lets the same MCU interface to legacy 5 V sensors as well as modern 3.3 V parts. Compared with discrete ADC plus MCU designs, this single-chip approach reduces BOM cost and PCB area while delivering IEC 61508 functional safety features for SIL-capable installations.

💡

LED Lighting Controller with Smooth Dimming

For dimmable LED drivers, the PIC18F47Q43-I/P delivers three 16-bit dual PWMs (six outputs) at 64 MHz resolution, with CLCs enabling hardware-only fade and color-mix sequencing without CPU intervention. The CWG generates complementary PWMs with programmable dead-band for half-bridge LED driver stages, while ZCD synchronizes dimming to the AC mains for flicker-free phase-cut compatibility. The XLP nanoWatt sleep mode lets the controller idle at nanoampere currents between dim commands, suitable for battery-backed emergency luminaires. Compared with pure analog dimming ICs, this MCU allows custom dimming curves, DALI/LIN bus interfaces via the dedicated UART, and on-board diagnostics such as open-LED detection via the comparator peripheral.

🤖

Small BLDC / PMSM Motor Controller

Sensorless BLDC and PMSM motors benefit from the PIC18F47Q43-I/P's trio of 16-bit PWMs with center-aligned modes, hardware dead-band insertion via CWG, and DMA-driven ADC sampling that captures BEMF zero-cross events deterministically. The 64 MHz MIPS throughput runs field-oriented control (FOC) and trapezoidal commutation loops in software when needed. Six DMA channels move ADC results into PWM duty-cycle registers without CPU load, freeing cycles for the control algorithm. The 40-pin PDIP package is breadboard-friendly for prototype controllers up to ~200 W, and the same Q43 family scales to 28- and 48-pin variants for higher-channel-count designs.

🧩

Capacitive Touch User Interface

The PIC18F47Q43-I/P's 12-bit ADCC automates capacitive voltage divider (CVD) acquisition, supporting robust touch buttons, sliders, and proximity sensors without an external touch IC. Hardware averaging, oversampling, and automatic threshold comparison reduce firmware complexity and CPU wake-ups. mTouch reference designs from Microchip provide ready-made PCB patterns and firmware libraries for the Q43 family. Five UARTs and two I2C peripherals let the same MCU drive touch panels while bridging to host MCUs or wireless modules. Compared with discrete touch ICs, integrating touch into the main MCU saves $0.30-1.00 BOM in appliances, white goods, and industrial HMI panels.

🌐

Building Automation Node

Building automation controllers for HVAC, access control, and lighting need to bridge multiple field buses while staying on standby for years on battery or harvested energy. The PIC18F47Q43-I/P meets this with XLP sleep currents down to nanoamperes, five UARTs (one supporting LIN/DMX/DALI), and two SPI/I2C ports for sensor and radio expansion. The 128 KB Flash accommodates BACnet, Modbus, or KNX stacks alongside user application code, and the DMA controllers move sensor data to peripherals autonomously for low-jitter comms. The functional-safety (FuSa) features and wide -40C to +85C industrial range help meet IEC 61508 SIL requirements in commercial building equipment.

📱

Low-Power IoT Edge Sensor Node

Battery-powered IoT edge nodes benefit from the PIC18F47Q43-I/P's XLP nanoWatt sleep, DMA-driven sensor acquisition, and CLC-based hardware wake-up timers that keep the CPU dormant for years on a single coin cell. The 12-bit ADCC digitizes temperature, humidity, and pressure sensors with hardware filtering, while the 5 UARTs and 2 SPI ports multiplex radios (LoRa, Wi-Fi, BLE modules) and sensors on a single bus. Compared with 32-bit Cortex-M0+ alternatives, the PIC18F47Q43-I/P delivers comparable active-mode throughput at lower cost and far simpler interrupt architecture, accelerating time-to-market for constrained designs.

Principaux différenciateurs

  • Six DMA controllers free the CPU for control algorithms (vs PIC18F47Q10-I/P)
  • 12-bit ADCC with CVD enables integrated capacitive touch (vs PIC18F47K42-I/P)
  • Three 16-bit dual PWMs (six outputs) for motor and lighting control (vs PIC18F46K22-I/P)

Notes de conception

The PIC18F47Q43-I/P has four VDD/VSS pin pairs (10/11, 20/21, 30/31 plus AVSS/AVDD on pin 40). Decouple every VDD/VSS pair with a 100 nF X7R ceramic capacitor placed within 5 mm of each pin pair. For noise-sensitive analog designs, add a 10 uF bulk capacitor near the AVSS/AVDD pair and route analog/digital grounds back to a single point at the power-entry filter. The wide 1.8-5.5 V operating range lets the part run directly from a single Li-ion cell down to 3.0 V or from a regulated 3.3 V/5 V rail.

PDIP-40 is a 600 mil wide package with 0.1 inch pin pitch, breadboard-friendly but with parasitic inductance on long PCB traces. Keep traces to MCLR and the ICSPDAT/ICSPCLK pins (RB6/RB7) shorter than 50 mm and route them away from switching power or PWM traces to avoid in-circuit programming glitches. PPS output routing is available on most pins but only a subset supports PPS input routing - consult the PPS input table in the datasheet when assigning UART/SPI/I2C signals. Leave RA6/RA7 unused or assign them to low-frequency peripherals to avoid contention with the 32 kHz crystal oscillator.

The -I suffix means industrial -40C to +85C; for outdoor or automotive applications choose the -E (extended -40C to +125C) variant. Do not assume the Q43 silicon is backward-compatible with the older K42 firmware - register maps for DMA, CLC, and ADCC differ significantly and firmware ports must update the configuration bits. Do not omit the 1 kohm pull-up on MCLR if you want the part to start reliably; floating MCLR causes intermittent reset events. Finally, the WWDT must be enabled in software (FWDT) - it is not enabled by default and SIL-capable designs require it.
