PIC24FJ128GA705-I/M4 Présentation
What is a PIC24F microcontroller? A PIC24F microcontroller is a 16-bit RISC MCU from Microchip Technology built on a modified Harvard architecture with 16-bit instructions and 24-bit-wide Flash storage words. It sits in the hierarchy as: MCU -> microcontroller -> 16-bit MCU -> PIC24F -> PIC24FJ GA family, optimized for low-power operation with peripherals like LCD drivers, CTMU touch sensing, and 12-bit ADCs.
Key features of the PIC24FJ128GA705-I/M4 include 128 KB ECC Flash, 16 KB RAM, 12-bit ADC at 200 ksps with up to 14 analog inputs, three analog comparators, CTMU for capacitive touch, and a hardware DMA controller for low-CPU-overhead data movement. Multiple low-power modes (Sleep, Idle, Doze) and a 32 MHz internal oscillator reduce external component count.
The device uses a 16-bit modified Harvard CPU with single-cycle multiply and hardware divide, backed by a 24-bit instruction word width that simplifies firmware development in MPLAB X IDE. The UQFN-48 package with exposed pad (EP) provides a thermal pad for heat spreading and a small PCB footprint, ideal for space-constrained designs.
Typical applications include low-power IoT sensor nodes, portable medical devices, industrial control panels with LCD displays, capacitive touch user interfaces, home appliances with segmented displays, and battery-powered data loggers. The integrated CTMU eliminates the need for external touch-sense ICs in HMI designs.
When designing with this MCU, follow Microchip's AN1416 layout guidelines for UQFN packages: provide a continuous ground plane beneath the exposed pad, use thermal vias, and follow recommended decoupling (100 nF ceramic close to each VDD/VSS pair). Use MPLAB XC16 compiler with appropriate optimization level for lowest active current.

Applications typiques
PIC24FJ128GA705-I/M4 convient pour 6 applications: Low-Power IoT Sensor Node, Portable Medical Device, Capacitive Touch HMI Panel, Industrial Control with LCD Display, Home Appliance User Interface, Battery-Powered Data Logger.
Low-Power IoT Sensor Node
The PIC24FJ128GA705-I/M4 is an excellent fit for battery-powered IoT sensor nodes thanks to its eXtreme Low Power architecture with multiple sleep modes, 16 KB RAM, and 128 KB ECC Flash that holds small protocol stacks and OTA update images. Its 12-bit 200 ksps ADC digitizes analog sensors (temperature, humidity, gas) directly without an external ADC. Typical current in Deep Sleep is sub-microampere, enabling multi-year coin-cell operation. Use the DMA to wake the CPU only when a buffer is full, and exploit the 32 MHz MIPS throughput for local data processing before RF transmission. The 6x6 mm UQFN footprint fits space-constrained sensor packages.
Recommandé
Portable Medical Device
The PIC24FJ128GA705-I/M4 suits portable medical devices (glucometers, pulse oximeters, single-parameter patient monitors) where its 12-bit ADC at 200 ksps digitizes sensor signals, the CTMU drives touch buttons or proximity sensors, and the 16 MIPS CPU runs measurement algorithms. ECC Flash improves reliability required by IEC 62304 medical firmware standards. The industrial -40C to +85C temperature range supports body-worn and ambient-temperature use. Low active current and multiple Sleep modes extend battery life across multi-day patient monitoring cycles.
Recommandé
Capacitive Touch HMI Panel
For human-machine interfaces with capacitive touch buttons, sliders, or proximity sensors, the PIC24FJ128GA705-I/M4's integrated CTMU performs hardware charge-time measurement without external touch controller ICs, reducing BOM cost and PCB area. The 12-bit ADC captures the touch-decoded measurements, while the 16 MIPS CPU runs the touch-decoding firmware and LCD driving. Its 128 KB Flash supports sophisticated gesture recognition. The UQFN-48 package allows compact front-panel designs.
Recommandé
Industrial Control with LCD Display
The PIC24FJ128GA705-I/M4 is well-suited for industrial control panels featuring segmented LCD displays, keypad scanning, and sensor aggregation. The PIC24FJ GA family's integrated LCD driver (peripheral on this family) eliminates external display drivers. The 32 MHz core handles real-time Modbus or CANopen protocol stacks, while the 16 KB RAM buffers incoming packets. Industrial -40C to +85C temperature range supports factory automation environments.
Recommandé
Home Appliance User Interface
For washing machines, refrigerators, microwave ovens, and HVAC thermostats, the PIC24FJ128GA705-I/M4 offers integrated peripherals (CTMU touch, ADC, comparators, LCD driver) in a single chip, reducing BOM cost. The 128 KB Flash accommodates multi-language UI strings and appliance state machines. Low sleep current suits always-on connected appliances. The compact UQFN-48 (6x6 mm) package fits behind the appliance front panel.
Recommandé
Battery-Powered Data Logger
The PIC24FJ128GA705-I/M4 excels in standalone battery data loggers (cold-chain temperature recorders, environmental monitors, asset trackers) thanks to ultra-low sleep current, 128 KB ECC Flash for storing recorded events, and 16 KB RAM as a circular measurement buffer. The 12-bit ADC with 14 inputs multiplexes multiple analog sensors. The 32 MHz CPU wakes periodically to process and store data, returning to sleep between samples for multi-year battery life.

Notes de conception
The UQFN-48 (6x6 mm) exposed pad MUST be soldered to a continuous ground plane on the top layer for proper thermal performance and electrical reference. Recommended Microchip Application Note AN1416: place a 5x5 array of 0.3 mm thermal vias (0.2 mm drill, 0.5 mm pitch) under the EP, stitching them to inner ground planes. Without proper EP soldering, the die may overheat at full CPU load (16 MIPS) or fail to start reliably after reflow.
Decouple VDD with a 100 nF ceramic capacitor placed within 3 mm of each VDD/VSS pin pair. Add a bulk 4.7 uF to 10 uF tantalum or ceramic capacitor near the VDD pin to handle CPU transient current bursts. Use a ferrite bead if the MCU shares a rail with a noisy switching regulator. The PIC24FJ GA family includes internal POR and BOR circuits, but a clean supply rail improves ADC noise floor.
Do not leave the MCLR pin floating - tie it to VDD through a 10 kohm resistor for normal operation, or directly to VDD if unused. MCLR is sensitive to noise and can cause spurious resets. When using ICSP (In-Circuit Serial Programming), the resistor is required to allow the programmer to drive MCLR low. For low-power applications, route MCLR to a dedicated GPIO-controlled voltage supervisor if you need deep sleep with reset held.
Route the 32 MHz system clock traces as short as possible, keep them away from analog signals (ADC inputs, comparator references), and place the ADC reference decoupling capacitor (4.7 uF in parallel with 100 nF) close to the AVREF pin. The CTMU requires clean signals - keep CTMU traces short and shield them from digital switching lines to maintain touch-sensing noise immunity.
