PIC32CM1216MC00032T-I/RTB Présentation

The Microchip Technology PIC32CM1216MC00032T-I/RTB is a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M0+ microcontroller from the PIC32CM MC00 family, delivering 48 MHz CPU performance with 128 KB Flash and 16 KB SRAM in a 32-pin VQFN (5x5 mm) surface-mount package. The device is built for consumer, commercial, industrial and automotive applications operating in electrically noisy environments, and integrates motor-control peripherals alongside robust serial communications.

What is a 32-bit Cortex-M0+ MCU? An ARM Cortex-M0+ microcontroller is the smallest and most energy-efficient member of the Cortex-M family, designed for deterministic real-time control in embedded systems. It occupies the position: MCU -> 32-bit microcontroller -> ARM Cortex-M -> embedded processor -> semiconductor. The Cortex-M0+ combines a 32-bit Thumb-2 instruction set with a tiny gate count, low active power, and a single-cycle I/O port, making it ideal for cost-sensitive control loops, sensor hubs, and motor control.

Key features of the PIC32CM1216MC00032T-I/RTB include a 48 MHz core, 128 KB program Flash, 16 KB SRAM, a 2.7 V to 5.5 V wide operating supply range suitable for 5 V rails, integrated motor-control PWMs and analog comparators, and SERCOM-configurable serial interfaces plus LIN support. The PIC32CM MC00 family emphasizes robust communications peripherals designed for noisy environments. The 32-pin VQFN package (5x5 mm) provides a compact footprint with an exposed pad for thermal dissipation.

Architecturally, the device uses a single-cycle I/O port, a Nested Vectored Interrupt Controller (NVIC), and configurable SERCOM modules that can be assigned as UART, SPI, or I2C, allowing flexible peripheral mapping. The motor-control timer and PWM subsystem support complementary outputs with dead-time insertion, while the ADC provides synchronized motor-control sampling. This combination allows the MCU to handle brushless DC (BLDC), permanent-magnet synchronous (PMSM), and stepper motor control loops directly.

Typical applications include BLDC and PMSM motor control, 5 V industrial sensor hubs, appliance controllers, HVAC fan control, automotive body electronics with LIN bus, and consumer white goods. The 5 V tolerance and the LIN transceiver-compatible SERCOM make it well suited to automotive 12 V body-control networks.

When designing with this device, observe the 2.7 V to 5.5 V supply window and use the exposed pad of the VQFN as the primary thermal dissipation path. For motor-control applications, follow Microchip application note AN2584 (motor-control tuning) and the PIC32CM MC00 family datasheet DS60001638B for peripheral configuration details. Decoupling requires a 100 nF X7R capacitor on each VDD pin plus a bulk 4.7 uF cap near the exposed pad. This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives, and practical design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet alone.

Applications typiques

PIC32CM1216MC00032T-I/RTB convient pour 6 applications: BLDC Motor Control (Fans and Pumps), Industrial 5V Sensor Hub, Appliance Control (Washing Machines / Refrigerators), Automotive LIN Body Electronics, HVAC Fan and Blower Control, Consumer White Goods and Small Drives.

🏭

BLDC Motor Control (Fans and Pumps)

The PIC32CM1216MC00032T-I/RTB is purpose-built for BLDC and PMSM motor-control loops. Its dedicated PWM timer provides complementary outputs with dead-time insertion, and the ADC is synchronized to the PWM cycle for current-sense sampling. The 48 MHz Cortex-M0+ core executes field-oriented control (FOC) firmware with deterministic cycle times, while the wide 2.7-5.5 V supply simplifies integration with 5 V gate drivers. According to Microchip application note AN2584, this combination enables sensorless BLDC commutation for HVAC fans, circulation pumps, and small appliances. Compared to a 16-bit MCU solution, the Cortex-M0+ Thumb-2 instruction set reduces code size by ~30%, leaving more Flash headroom for advanced commutation algorithms and diagnostics.

🏭

Industrial 5V Sensor Hub

With its 2.7 V to 5.5 V supply range and 5 V-tolerant I/O, the PIC32CM1216MC00032T-I/RTB operates directly on a 5 V industrial rail without level shifters. The SERCOM module can be configured as UART, SPI, or I2C, allowing it to aggregate data from multiple sensor types - temperature, pressure, flow - into a single MCU. The 16 KB SRAM is sufficient for sensor buffering, and the 128 KB Flash accommodates Modbus or IO-Link stack implementations. The integrated LIN peripheral supports automotive and industrial sensor networks. This makes the device well-suited to PLC analog-input modules, factory-floor sensor concentrators, and process-control transmitter heads operating from 24 V industrial rails stepped down to 5 V.

🏭

Appliance Control (Washing Machines / Refrigerators)

The PIC32CM1216MC00032T-I/RTB is a strong fit for white-goods motor-control boards thanks to its combination of motor-control PWM, ADC, and 5 V-tolerant I/O. The Cortex-M0+ core handles both user-interface tasks (button scanning, LED driving, display update) and real-time motor commutation, reducing the BOM by eliminating a separate UI MCU. The wide supply range tolerates the 5 V standby rails common in appliances, and the integrated SERCOM supports UART links to the main control panel or Wi-Fi module. The 85C industrial temperature grade covers inside-appliance environments, while the -E variant extends this to compressor compartments. Compared to legacy 8-bit PIC16 designs, the ARM core offers 4-8x faster execution at similar cost.

🚗

Automotive LIN Body Electronics

The PIC32CM MC00 family integrates LIN-compatible serial peripherals, making the PIC32CM1216MC00032T-I/RTB suitable for LIN slave body-control modules such as seat controllers, mirror adjusters, window lift switches, and interior lighting nodes. Its 5 V tolerance matches automotive 12 V body networks regulated to 5 V, and the Cortex-M0+ core runs the LIN 2.x protocol stack comfortably. While the -I industrial grade is not AEC-Q100 qualified, the extended-temperature -E variant approaches automotive thermal requirements for non-safety body-electronics functions. Compared to dedicated LIN-only ASSPs, this MCU offers the flexibility to add sensor I/O, PWM outputs, and diagnostic LEDs in a single chip.

🏭

HVAC Fan and Blower Control

The PIC32CM1216MC00032T-I/RTB drives variable-speed BLDC fans in HVAC systems, where motor efficiency and acoustic noise are critical. Its motor-control PWM supports 20 kHz switching frequencies - well above the audible range - and the synchronized ADC enables closed-loop current control for constant-airflow regulation. The Cortex-M0+ core at 48 MHz leaves ample MIPS for sensorless FOC or trapezoidal commutation. The 128 KB Flash stores lookup tables for fan curves and fault diagnostics, and the 16 KB SRAM buffers communication with the system controller via UART or LIN. Compared to discrete MCU + pre-driver solutions, this integrated approach shrinks the BOM and reduces PCB area.

🏭

Consumer White Goods and Small Drives

Beyond large appliances, the PIC32CM1216MC00032T-I/RTB fits small consumer drives such as robotic vacuum cleaners, smart blinds, air purifiers, and personal-care devices. Its 5x5 mm VQFN package enables compact PCBs, while the integrated motor-control peripherals eliminate the need for an external gate-driver MCU. The Cortex-M0+ core handles both BLE-stack hand-off via UART to a separate radio module and motor commutation, partitioning tasks cleanly. The 85C industrial temperature grade covers most consumer indoor environments. Compared to a discrete 8-bit MCU + driver IC approach, this single-chip solution reduces component count by ~40% and improves EMI performance through tighter integration.

Notes de conception

Place a 100 nF X7R 0402 or 0603 ceramic decoupling capacitor within 2 mm of each VDD pin (pins 6, 14, 28) and a single bulk 4.7 uF X7R 0805 capacitor adjacent to the exposed thermal pad (EP). The 5 V supply tolerance simplifies integration with industrial 24 V rails stepped down to 5 V via a DC-DC converter or LDO. For motor-control applications where the supply is shared with the gate driver, add a ferrite bead and additional bulk capacitance to isolate MCU noise from analog supply.

The VQFN-32 package uses the exposed thermal pad (EP) as the primary heat-dissipation path. Solder the EP directly to a copper pour of at least 25 mm^2 (5x5 mm) on the top layer, with thermal vias connecting to the inner/ground plane. The 32-pin VQFN typically achieves a theta_JA of ~38 C/W on a 2-layer JEDEC EIA/JESD51 test board. For designs dissipating more than 200 mW (uncommon for this MCU), increase the copper area or add a heatsink to the bottom of the board.

Keep the SWDIO (pin 31) and SWCLK (pin 32) traces short (under 50 mm) and route them away from the PWM outputs and motor-driver switching nodes to avoid debug-port glitches during motor commutation. Add a 100 kOhm pull-up on SWDIO and SWCLK per ARM CoreSight recommendations. Place the RESET line (pin 30) with a 10 kOhm pull-up to VDD and a 1 nF cap to ground for noise immunity in motor-control environments.

Do not exceed 5.5 V on any I/O pin even though the device is 5 V-tolerant - the absolute-maximum rating is 6.0 V. For LIN bus applications, ensure the LIN transceiver is powered from a stable 5 V rail and add TVS diodes on the LIN line for automotive transient protection. When migrating from a PIC24 or PIC16 design, note that the SERCOM peripheral must be configured at runtime for each UART/SPI/I2C function - this is different from dedicated peripherals on legacy PIC MCUs and is a common porting pitfall.
