RAK3172-T-8-SM-I Présentation

The RAKwireless RAK3172-T-8-SM-I is a low-power, long-range LoRaWAN transceiver module based on the STMicroelectronics STM32WLE5CC SoC, integrating an Arm Cortex-M4 MCU core and Semtech SX126x LoRa radio in a single die. The -T-8-SM-I variant is the tape-and-reel packaged, 868 MHz EU868 band, SMD castellation module with IPEX antenna connector, operating from a 2V to 3.6V supply and delivering up to +20 dBm transmit power.

A LoRaWAN module is a pre-certified, surface-mount wireless subsystem that combines a microcontroller, a sub-GHz radio transceiver, an RF matching network, and an antenna interface into a single reflow-solderable PCB module. Within the broader wireless hierarchy, a LoRaWAN module sits above a bare transceiver IC and below a complete LoRaWAN end-device; the module approach lets product designers skip RF layout certification and reuse already-approved LoRaWAN 1.0.3 stacks. The RAK3172 belongs to the LPWAN family of modules using Chirp Spread Spectrum (CSS) modulation for long range, low data rate, and robust urban penetration.

Key specifications of the RAK3172-T-8-SM-I include a +20 dBm maximum TX output power, approximately 5.22 mA average receive current, and up to 87 mA peak current at full +20 dBm transmit output. The module is housed in a 15.5 mm × 15 mm SMD castellation package with an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C and an RF range of approximately 15 km line-of-sight. Communication interfaces supporting serial SPI, UART, and I2C peripherals are exposed through the castellated edge pads.

The STM32WLE5CC SoC at the heart of the module embeds a Cortex-M4 core running up to 48 MHz with 256 Kbytes of Flash and 64 Kbytes of SRAM, alongside the Semtech SX1262-compatible radio IP. This single-die integration removes the SPI bus between MCU and radio that earlier discrete designs required and reduces BOM cost. The module is pre-certified for the EU868 LoRaWAN band and supports Class A, B, and C end-device classes per LoRaWAN 1.0.3 specification.

Typical applications for the RAK3172-T-8-SM-I include battery-powered IoT sensors for smart agriculture soil moisture monitoring, livestock asset tracking, smart metering for gas and water utilities, environmental monitoring stations, and industrial equipment predictive maintenance nodes. The IPEX antenna connector allows external antenna selection per deployment scenario, and the small 15.5 × 15 mm footprint fits inside compact enclosures.

When designing with this module, ensure the host PCB exposes the IPEX connector footprint if an external antenna is planned, and add at least 10 µF of bulk decoupling near the module supply pin. The castellation pads are the only electrical connection - hand soldering requires a hot plate or precise iron tip. Confirm regional LoRaWAN band selection before purchasing: the -8- variant is for EU868, while other variants cover US915, AU915, AS923, IN865, and KR920 regions.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in same-band variants, and practical design considerations beyond the manufacturer datasheet, providing an engineering-grade resource for module selection and PCB integration.

RAK3172-T-8-SM-I convient pour 7 applications: Smart Agriculture Soil Moisture Monitoring, Livestock Asset Tracking, Smart Metering for Gas and Water Utilities, Environmental Monitoring Stations, Industrial Equipment Predictive Maintenance, Building Automation and Smart Lighting, LoRaWAN Development and Prototyping.

🏭

Smart Agriculture Soil Moisture Monitoring

The RAK3172-T-8-SM-I is well suited to smart agriculture soil moisture and environmental sensor nodes because of its 2V to 3.6V supply range, low 5.22 mA RX current, and deep-sleep modes enabled by the STM32WLE5CC's integrated Cortex-M4 core. With +20 dBm TX power and approximately 15 km line-of-sight RF range, a single sensor node can reach a gateway across multiple hectares of farmland without external infrastructure. The IPEX antenna connector allows a small external whip antenna to be mounted on the enclosure lid, improving radiation pattern over buried or shielded orientations. The 256 KB on-chip flash is adequate for typical LoRaWAN sensor firmware plus a small payload buffer.

🚗

Livestock Asset Tracking

Livestock tracking collars benefit from the RAK3172-T-8-SM-I's +20 dBm TX power and EU868 band certification. Mounted on cattle or sheep collars with a battery pack, the module reports GPS-derived location or motion events at low duty cycle, achieving multi-year battery life thanks to the integrated LoRa radio's low RX current (5.22 mA) and the STM32WLE5CC's deep-sleep modes. The IPEX connector accommodates a flexible antenna tuned for the EU868 band that survives collar flexing. The 87 mA peak TX current is well within LiSOCl2 primary cell discharge capability for short bursts.

⚡

Smart Metering for Gas and Water Utilities

Smart metering endpoints in basements or underground pits can leverage the RAK3172-T-8-SM-I's 15 km line-of-sight RF range and EU868 frequency band, which penetrates concrete walls more effectively than 2.4 GHz alternatives. The module's 2V minimum supply voltage allows direct operation from a single lithium primary cell without boost converters, simplifying the BOM. Class A LoRaWAN operation means the meter sleeps most of the time and only wakes for scheduled uplinks, minimizing battery drain. RAKwireless LoRaWAN 1.0.3 certification removes the need for end-product RF certification testing on the metering application.

🌐

Environmental Monitoring Stations

Environmental monitoring stations measuring air quality, noise, or rainfall benefit from the RAK3172-T-8-SM-I's combination of low power, robust LoRaWAN link budget, and compact 15.5 × 15 mm form factor. The IPEX connector supports a weather-resistant external antenna mounted on the enclosure top. With up to +20 dBm TX power and SX126x-class receiver sensitivity, the module can transmit from inside dense urban installations to rooftop gateways. The integrated Cortex-M4 MCU at 48 MHz can locally process sensor data before transmitting, reducing uplink airtime and extending battery life.

🏭

Industrial Equipment Predictive Maintenance

Predictive maintenance sensors mounted on motors, pumps, and compressors can use the RAK3172-T-8-SM-I to transmit vibration and temperature data over LoRaWAN, leveraging the module's -40°C to +85°C industrial temperature range and EU868 band compatibility for European factory deployments. The 87 mA peak current at +20 dBm is manageable from industrial 24V-to-3.3V buck converters or from local battery backup. The SPI and I2C host interfaces allow direct connection to MEMS accelerometers without an additional MCU, simplifying the sensor node design. Class C mode can be enabled for mains-powered actuators requiring instant downlink response.

💡

Building Automation and Smart Lighting

Building automation endpoints such as occupancy sensors, daylight-harvesting light controllers, and HVAC zone thermostats can use the RAK3172-T-8-SM-I as a low-power wireless uplink. The IPEX antenna connector allows a flexible antenna to be hidden inside the luminaire or wall-mount enclosure without affecting RF performance. The 256 KB flash is sufficient for LoRaWAN stack plus building automation logic. Class C LoRaWAN operation suits mains-powered lighting controllers that need to receive instant dimming commands from a building management system.

🧩

LoRaWAN Development and Prototyping

Engineers prototyping LoRaWAN end-device firmware will find the RAK3172-T-8-SM-I a productive starting point. The module supports both RUI3 (RAK Unified Interface v3) AT-command firmware and Meshtastic/Zephyr RTOS firmware, allowing quick evaluation without writing bare-metal STM32 code. The IPEX connector lets developers swap antennas during range testing, and the castellation pads are breadboard-compatible with RAK's breakout board. Notes de conception

The RAK3172-T-8-SM-I draws up to 87 mA peak TX current at +20 dBm. Place a 10 µF X7R ceramic bulk capacitor within 3 mm of the module VDD pin to handle these bursts without supply droop. For battery-powered designs, account for average current draw of 5.22 mA in RX plus periodic TX peaks; a 2500 mAh LiSOCl2 primary cell can power multi-year deployments at typical LoRaWAN sensor duty cycles. Add a reverse-polarity protection FET or Schottky diode if the module is wired to a battery that may be inserted backwards.

The RAK3172-T-8-SM-I is a castellation-pad SMD module; the host PCB must have matching half-hole pads and reflow-solderable land pattern per the RAKwireless datasheet mechanical drawing. The IPEX antenna connector requires a keep-out zone of at least 5 mm around the connector to avoid coupling with nearby ground copper. The host PCB should expose the antenna feed trace or IPEX connector footprint on the opposite side from the module to simplify assembly. Use a minimum of 4-layer PCB with continuous ground plane beneath the module for best RF performance.

Do not select a US915, AU915, AS923, IN865, or KR920 band RAK3172 variant if your LoRaWAN server is provisioned for EU868 - the band filter is hardware-set and not firmware-selectable. Do not assume the IPEX variant is interchangeable with the NI solder pad variant; the PCB antenna trace must be designed to match the specific variant. Hand-soldering the castellation pads requires a hot plate or precision iron - do not attempt drag soldering without proper tooling. Verify the module's RX indicator GPIO and reset behavior against the RUI3 or custom firmware before designing host firmware dependencies.

Estimated: at +20 dBm continuous TX into a 50-ohm load with a 3.3V supply, the module dissipates approximately 0.5 W internally. The STM32WLE5CC die temperature rises accordingly; ambient operation above 70°C may require duty-cycle derating to avoid thermal shutdown. For enclosed outdoor enclosures, ensure passive ventilation or attach a small thermal pad to the host PCB ground pour beneath the module to spread dissipation.
